Amy bought Glen Powell's ketchup on a whim at the store and there’s so much more to this then we realized. We get into his wild journey from a childhood ketchup trauma to co-founding his own organic condiment brand, Smash Kitchen. Kat unpacks family systems for us and the different roles people tend to fall into growing up, the Hero, the Mascot, the Lost Child, the Placater, and the Scapegoat, and talk through why the "truth teller" of the family so often ends up labeled as the problem. We also talk about a psychological trick called the Benjamin Franklin Effect, the surprising reason people actually like you more when you ask them for a small favor, not the other way around. Plus, we share an incredibly touching story from a Hasbro Moment listener whose autistic son found connection and confidence through simple board games like Hi Ho! Cherry-O and Hungry Hungry Hippos, thanks to a teacher who knew exactly what he needed. Hasbro is sponsoring Feeling Things for 8 weeks, celebrating back to school by getting families around the table with games again. Even better: they're helping us honor amazing teachers! Know one? The Church Of The Souls Evolution with The Reverend Blake Rubie (Ordained Minister) Running, Resilience, Reincarnation, and the Light of the Soul Reverend Blake Rubie hosts The Church of the Souls Evolution with a personal monologue on lifelong running, Army fitness, kidney donation, health habits, veganism, singing, spiritual growth, reincarnation, the afterlife, prayer, extraterrestrial civilizations, and humanity's need to evolve beyond war into love, dignity, and peace. Reverend Blake Rubie Opens With Fitness, Memory, and Personal Reflection This episode of The Church of the Souls Evolution, broadcast on August 8, 2026, is hosted entirely by Reverend Blake Rubie. The corrected transcript identifies Reverend Blake Rubie as the host and notes that the raw transcript used “Reverend Blake Ruby,” while the user-confirmed spelling is Reverend Blake Rubie. He begins by welcoming listeners and describing his morning workout at a rubber track, where he walks, jogs, and adds sprinting. From there, the episode becomes a deeply personal reflection on physical discipline, aging, health, music, spiritual growth, and the soul's journey. Army Running, Monterey, and the Commander's Cup Reverend Rubie recalls his years as a runner, especially during his time in the Army at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, from June 1992 to June 1993. After telling his company that he could run two miles in about twelve minutes, he was made captain of the Golf Company run team. He describes the Commander's Cup competitions, daily training, formation runs, cadence, calisthenics, routes down to the Pacific Ocean, and the challenge of running back up the steep Monterey hill. He remembers that the team won the Commander's Cup five times in twelve months and that their best time was eleven minutes and thirty-nine seconds. Kidney Donation, Injury, Recovery, and Exercise Adaptation The episode then turns to one of Reverend Rubie's defining life experiences: donating a kidney to save his son's life in 1995. He explains that the surgery left him with a painful scar, long-term discomfort, and physical limitations that made running, push-ups, sit-ups, bending, turning, walking, and other movements more difficult. He also discusses later medical profiles in the Army, Walter Reed, GERD, reflux, spine fractures, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, and the gradual shift from running to walking. Rather than presenting this as defeat, he frames it as adaptation, experimentation, and a continuing effort to remain active in a way that works for his body. The Rubber Track, Sprinting Technique, Shoes, and Breathing Reverend Rubie gives practical detail about his present-day workout routine. He prefers a rubber track because it is softer on the joints and avoids pavement, dirt, rocks, holes, and low-traction surfaces. He uses the straightaway rather than running the curves, believing the curves can affect the knees over time. He discusses shoes, especially Skechers slip-in models, and explains that tight laces can create foot pain or affect gait. He also describes beginning sprints slowly from a jog, building into acceleration, and breathing primarily through the nose while running because, in his experience, it helps synchronize the arms, feet, and body. Singing, Toastmasters, Sobriety, and Vegan Discipline After discussing his workout, Reverend Rubie moves into his singing practice. He explains that he warms up a cappella, uses a microphone and sound system, and has memorized more than 150 songs. He connects singing with confidence, church solos, Toastmasters, personal growth, and public speaking. He also reflects on sobriety, saying he has not had alcohol since Labor Day weekend in 1988, and then turns to veganism, which he began in 1999 after donating a kidney. He describes becoming vegetarian first, then vegan, partly for longevity and health, and explains how discipline, research, fiber, and persistence helped him make the lifestyle work. Venezuela, Aging, Gratitude, and the Songs He Loves Reverend Rubie shares memories of moving to Caracas, Venezuela, as a new vegan in 2001 and learning to survive on beans, rice, vegetables, spaghetti with marinara, and cheese-free pizza. He speaks warmly of the Venezuelan people, describing them as positive despite hardship and economic difficulty. As he approaches his seventy-second birthday, he reflects honestly on health, mortality, blood work, an arm wound, and waiting for biopsy results. He also lists many songs he loves and performs, including works by the Eagles, the Doobie Brothers, America, Neil Young, the Allman Brothers, John Denver, Traffic, James Taylor, Don Henley, Billy Idol, The Guess Who, the Beatles, and Gordon Lightfoot. Spirit in the Body, Reincarnation, and the Afterlife The second half of the monologue becomes more explicitly spiritual. Reverend Rubie describes human beings as spirits in material bodies, here through a process of reincarnation, and says that when people die, they transition to the afterlife as pure spirits. He compares the body to worn-out clothing that the spirit leaves behind and says the real self is not the body, but the soul and spirit within it. He teaches that each lifetime offers an opportunity for growth, spiritual development, and increasing the light of the soul. In his view, the Creator's spark is placed into every soul, and the purpose of life is to brighten that divine light. Prayer, Peace, and Humanity's Spiritual Evolution Reverend Rubie closes with a prayerful call for humanity to rise beyond war, violence, and spiritual immaturity. He says prayer can help save the world and repeats the message that “man will prey on man until man learns to pray for man.” He contrasts Earth's violence with higher extraterrestrial civilizations that, in his view, may live with greater love, dignity, and respect for life. He asks whether people want to return to another low-evolution world of conflict or graduate toward higher worlds where beings recognize the sacred light within one another. The episode ends with a heartfelt prayer to Mother and Father God, asking for help, peace, love, and blessing for all people.

What Dental School Didn’t Prepare You For – PDP276

Protrusive Dental Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 22, 2026 46:20

Just qualified — so why does it feel like the learning is only just beginning? What should you actually focus on in year one: the flawless dentistry on your feed, or something far less glamorous? How do you tell a patient their nerve might die — without it sounding like YOUR fault? And when a patient says “just do whatever you think” — what do you say back? This is the conversation every new dentist needs and every experienced one recognises. Our guest is Dr Emma Hutchison — a former dental nurse who trained at the University of Glasgow, and has been the face of the Protrusive Students series across her studies. We recorded in her final weeks of dental school, right on the threshold of practice, and talked through everything the syllabus skips: the safe-beginner mindset, what to learn (and what to ignore) early on, how to protect your standards under time pressure, which cases to take on, and how to talk to patients about risk, cost and consent so the words actually land. If you're fresh out, this one hits hard. If you're an oldie, it's a trip down memory lane — and a reminder of how far you've come. https://youtu.be/gjJiDVP4w-4 Watch PDP276 on YouTube Protrusive Dental Pearl: Predict the Complication Before It Happens A communication pearl for every deep restoration. When a filling sits close to the nerve — a big cavity, a crack — name the likely complication before it happens. Show the patient the images, then tell them what to expect: a twinge to cold or hot that can linger a few days, so keep taking painkillers and keep the area clean. And warn them what a red flag looks like: a severe throbbing ache keeping them up at night, or pain out of the blue without eating or drinking, means the nerve is struggling and they should call you. Do this and, if the complication ever arrives, you look like the expert who called it — not someone something went wrong for. Skip it and reception fields the panicked calls instead. It reassures the patient, lowers your callback rate, and quietly reduces your risk profile. Obvious, easy to forget, and worth saying out loud every single time. What You'll Take From This Episode The safe-beginner mindset — why qualifying is the driving licence, not the destination, and how the happiest dentists keep getting 1% better. Just-in-time learning — study for the cases actually in your diary, not the obscure pathology you won't meet for years. Get good before you get fast — master the bread and butter, protect a little extra time early, and reflect on every procedure. Clever hacks vs cutting corners — how to tell the difference, and why every shortcut quietly rewires the habit. Consent that works — getting patients to own the problem, and giving a clear recommendation instead of a fifteen-item menu. She has been the face of the Protrusive Students series throughout her studies, and this episode marks her crossing from student to newly qualified dentist. On behalf of the whole Protruserati: we're proud of you, Emma. AGD Subject Code: 770 Self-Improvement  Aim & Learning Outcomes Aim: To give early-career dentists a practical framework for the transition from dental school to independent practice — how to keep developing, how to protect clinical standards under time pressure, and how to communicate risk and treatment options as part of valid consent. Learning Outcomes — by the end of this episode, dentists will be able to: Apply a “just-in-time” approach to continuing development, prioritising the competencies relevant to the cases in front of them over isolated advanced techniques. Differentiate time-saving efficiencies from quality-compromising shortcuts, and describe strategies to maintain clinical standards early in practice. Apply structured communication techniques to explain procedural risk, establish a patient's treatment goal, and make a clear, defensible recommendation as part of valid consent.

There was a time when Canadians didn't believe in Canadian music...unless someone else told us it was good first. To celebrate Canada Day, we're exploring how that mindset changed, and how Canada went from cultural insecurity to producing one of the most influential rock movements of the 1990s. From early radio bias and the “Guess Who?” prank, to CanCon rules, FACTOR funding, the rise of FM radio, and the national impact of MuchMusic, this is the long story of how a domestic music industry was built...piece by piece. We trace the conditions that led to the CanRock explosion of the '90s, spotlighting key artists and moments along the way: Rush, Martha and the Muffins, Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip, Sloan, Our Lady Peace, I Mother Earth, and many more. We also dig into the demographics, economics, and cultural shifts that turned Canadian bands into hometown heroes...and international stars. It took decades, smart policy, and a generation ready to embrace its own voice...but the payoff was enormous. This is the story of how Canadian rock found its confidence…and changed everything. Throughout the Gospels, some of Jesus' most powerful moments happened around a table. He taught truth, extended grace, confronted hypocrisy, built relationships, and revealed the heart of God while sharing meals with ordinary people. From dining with sinners to feeding thousands, every meal carried a message. This sermon series, “Guess Who's Coming To Dinner,” Pastor Brad leads us to explore the meals of Jesus and what they teach us about faith, fellowship, forgiveness, humility, and the Kingdom of God. Each week highlights a different scene where Jesus used food and fellowship to transform lives and point people toward salvation. As we gather around these tables, we discover that Jesus still invites people to come near, find grace, and experience true spiritual nourishment. Whether you feel far from God or close to Him, there is always a place at the table with Jesus.

Going back to the mid-'60s, who would have thought that Allen Park had a music scene that would flesh out one of the finest groups to hit the charts in the Michigan music scene? Rick Stevers is a founding member of the mighty Frijid Pink, who continues to tell the story from behind the drum kit. Stevers is also a member of the Michigan Rock Legends Hall of Fame and the Pink's cover of 'House Of The Rising Sun' continues to be a household staple.    Here in part 2 of 2, from the pink bathrooms of the era, to the big stages playing with a 'who's who' of other '60s bands such as The Guess Who, studio time with Janis Joplin, and meeting the other 'House of The Rising Sun' band, Eric Burden & The Animals.    Being ahead of the curve, Frijid Pink spent more time on the road than many of their contemporaries, which Rick says that did more harm than good when it came to the Michigan fan base. Partying with Sammy Davis Jr., working with Don Brewer, speaking with Gordon Lightfoot, and being a car worker at Chrysler for over 17 years. All the albums, lineup changes and lost power to his father, never stopped Stevers. You have to dig into this episode, NOW!

EPISODE 143 -  “GUESS WHO'S NUMBER ONE?: STEVE & NAN RANK TRACY/HEPBURN FILMS” - 6/08/2026  One of the most dynamic duos in film history is undoubtedly the teaming of SPENCER TRACY and KATHARINE HEPBURN. This chemistry was electric. Over the course of their careers, they appeared in nine films together — covering a wide range of genres. They were in everything from Westerns (“The Sea of Grass”) to film noirs (“Keeper of the Flame”) to what would become their specialty, romantic comedies (“Pat and Mike”). They also appeared in the seminal 1960s social comedy/drama “Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.” This week, Steve & Nan will do the impossible  — they will attempt to rank the nine films this duo made together. Form worst to best! How will your favorite stack up? Once again, I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and got to experience the lift off of the first Canadian artist to hit #1 in the USA. Before they became world famous, they were another prairie band trying to get the bosses in Toronto to notice them. I was at CJME and CKCK in Regina, and over one early 60's summer, they spent the hot months playing at beach parties and small halls. One after the other. Then the hits started to roll, and I ended up going to London, UK, with them, to cover the story. Except the story was a bust.  Poorly planned on the London end, they played a couple of tv shows and came home. Then came These Eyes,  American Woman and fame. After the Guess Who split up, another set of musicians decided to take the name and run with it, for 13 years. Legalities carried on for many years, but eventually Randy and Burrton Cummings..the two original guys, got the name back and that's why the upcoming Guess Who Tour is called the " taking it back tour."
