Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
The plays of William Shakespeare contain within them a whole world of human action and purpose. They are, said Samuel Johnson, "a faithful mirror of manners and of life." We seem to watch over Shakespeare's shoulder as he turns that mirror this way and that, from medieval England, to the coast of Bohemia, to republican Rome, to a desert island beset with the spirits of the air. And from time to time, as the mirror turns, we see our faces there as well. In those moments we sometimes come to realize, writes my guest Eliot Cohen, that while "we like to think that whatever we see in the mirror is beautiful…Shakespeare forces us to realize that there may be ugly or even hideous things there as well." Eliot Cohen has been a faithful viewer of William Shakespeare's mirror for many years, and his new book is a distillation of those lessons shaken together with his equally long study of statecraft and strategic thought. It is The Hollow Crown: Shakespeare on How Leaders Rise, Rule, and Fall. Eliot A. Cohen is the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the Robert E. Osgood Professor at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Among his many books are Supreme Command: Soldiers, Statesmen, and Leadership in Wartime. He has also served as an officer in the Army Reserve, as a director in Defense Department's planning staff, and from 2007 to 2009 was Counselor to the Secretary of State. This is second appearance on Historically Thinking; since he was on to talk with Jonathan Zimmerman about civic education in Episode 205, he has gotten into podcasting, co-presenting “Shield of the Republic” with partner in crime Eric Adelman. I highly recommend it. For Further Investigation Our previous conversation on Shakespeare was with friend of the podcast Scott Newstok in Episode 186 After listening to the conversation, or in the midst of it, you'll want to watch several–or all–of these soliloquies from The Guardian's "Shakespeare Solos"

In this episode we are honored to host a conversation with Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad, to discuss their brand new book The Withdrawal: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power. Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historical essayist, social critic and political activist. While we couldn't find a complete bibliography, from what we could gather, it seems that at this point he has written over 100 books, on a wide range of topics. Vijay Prashad is an executive director of Tricontinental: institute of Social Research, the Chief Editor of LeftWord Books, and a senior non-resident fellow at Chonyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China. He is also the author of over 20 books and a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). In this conversation we talk about the recent U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, the so-called “China threat,” The Godfather attitude of U.S. imperialism, the war in Ukraine, sanctions, and international law. We also question whether we should look at the U.S. as a declining power or just an empire in transition. As you will see we were not able to get through all of our questions in this conversation, but Noam and Vijay were kind enough to record a part 2 with us as well, which we will release in the coming days. This part of the conversation was recorded on August 30th. We want to thank all of our patrons for making our show possible. Today we will unlock the book The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses and the Rise of the Tudors. This book details the history of the regime change from the fall of the House of Lancaster to the rise of the Tudors for nearly a century. In June 1420, a triumphant song rang out from a church in the city of Troyes., A young girl wearing a crown and extravagant wedding dress, walked solemnly towards the church accompanied by a band. Her distinguished groom, a scarred faced, battle-weary warrior, wore stately and luxurious attire. The church was packed with well-dressed lords, knights and noblewomen who gathered to witness the wedding while 1,600 soldiers stood guard outside the church. The two main characters in this sombre ceremony were King Henry V of Lancaster, England, and Catherine de Valois, daughter of King Charles VI of France. The pairing formalized the partnership between England and France and put Henry V in control of Britain and France. Henry V won the Anglo-French war with his outstanding military expertise, however, King Charles VI of France was unable to govern due to mental illness as well as growing divisions and political opposition within his empire. France caved beneath the pressure of the English empire. As a result of France's loss, Catherine's brother Charles VII, lost his right to the Crown of France and its princess, both of which fell to Henry V.

Does religion dictate politics or does politics dictate religion? Is success achieved through strategy or spirituality? Should the king bear moral responsibility for his soldiers' behavior in battle? Shakespeare shot to fame in the 1590s by tackling the critical questions of his day in dramas depicting the inner lives of medieval English monarchs. But he couldn't have done it without drawing on the Hebrew Bible. In this episode, Professor Paul Cantor takes us on a deep dive into Henry V, unpacking the influence of early Israelite leaders, including Moses, Joshua, and David, on Shakespeare's compelling and complex representation of the Tudor dynasty. Jeremy and Niamh are joined by Cincinnati Shakespeare's own Henry VI, Darnell Benjamin, to talk about the BBC Hollow Crown production of Henry VI.
“If love be rough with you, be rough with love” Three reviewers, alike in temperament (if not always in opinion), sit down this week to talk some serious culture as the Spoiler team take a look at Baz Luhrmann's Shakespeare adaptation ‘Romeo + Juliet'. Paul wonders just how many meads he must have had when he suggested we tackle the Bard, while Andy shares his concerns that talking Shakespeare could expose the fact he's not as clever as he's often credited with being. Self-proclaimed Shakespeare traditionalist Rachael struggles with the MTV style of Luhrmann's film but applauds his contribution to making the Bard's work the visual experience it was always intended to be. While Paul bemoans the fact that Radiohead's ‘Exit Music (For a Film)' is not as deep as he once thought but delights in the fact that Billy Bragg's ‘Between the Wars' gets even better with age, Andy questions whether Rachael's interest in the ‘Hollow Crown' series has more to do with her love of language or the presence of a certain Mr. Hiddleston. And the team debate whether the word ‘punished' is made more dramatic by the addition of an extra syllable. Elsewhere, Rachael takes a look at some less-obvious Shakespeare adaptations that reinterpret the Bard's work in a looser fashion, including ‘10 Things I Hate About You' and ‘The Lion King'. This week's scale: True love or “All are punish-ed” To listen to more SPOILER podcasts, go to our website www.spoilerpodcast.co.uk or subscribe to us on iTunes or Acast
