Casey McFarland, LAPC, NCC. Along with my Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I also earned a certificate in Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Counseling, which gives me a professional framework to deconstruct religious structures that have caused harm. As a secular therapist, I offer care that honors each person's values without imposing religious frameworks—something especially important for those who've felt unseen or harmed in traditional spaces. At the heart of my work is the belief that healing is possible, that growth comes in many forms, and that we all have the ability to reclaim our lives and move forward with strength and purpose. Chris Moorman takes us through his story, from playing bridge (i know right?) at a high level to building a record-breaking poker career. We talk about the highs—like winning a WSOP bracelet and crushing live tournaments—and the lows, including staking gone wrong and the fallout of Black Friday. Chris also dives into his new chapter as an ACR Team Pro, breaking down ICM strategy (or his distaste for it), live-streamed cash games, and what it's like to pivot in the poker world post-COVID. Oh, and there's a wild degen story at the end—you don't want to miss it. Hit play for an inside look into the mindset of a champion poker player and the lessons he's learned along the way.

In this week's episode, Blake talks with Brian Harris (In-House Professional Counselor; LAPC) about the Davies Shelters' approach to counseling, and how we are working with our guests who live with mental health struggles to grow something better. We want to remind you that The Davies Shelters relies on gifts from people like you every holiday season so we can grow towards the new year. Episode #48: Illness from Human Immunodeficiency Virus commonly called HIV and AIDS, has largely been overshadowed and forgotten despite the fact that over 1.1 million Americans are living with the disease. While it is now a chronic, manageable condition, there is still stigma, discrimination, and misunderstanding that can have a significant impact on the mental health of those living with it. In this episode, we discuss the mental health issues related to living and aging with HIV. Join our guest host psychotherapist Kaleo Kaluhiwa as he talks with Jim Schultz about testing positive for HIV in the early 1980s, before the disease was well understood, and about his experience learning to live with and manage HIV for over 30 years. We're also joined by mental health counselor Bryan Golson, LAPC who identifies the unique and complex needs of people living with HIV due to the intersection of discrimination, social dislocation, disability, trauma, substance use disorders, diseases of aging, and managing the side effects of multi-pharmaceutical treatments. In the summer of 2019, a very public fight unfurled in Bloomington, Indiana — over accusations that Sarah Dye and Douglas Mackey, who sold produce at the city-run farmers' market, were members of an organization classified by the Southern Poverty Law Center and Anti-Defamation League as a white nationalist hate group (an association that would soon be confirmed). Abby Ang, a graduate student at Indiana University in Bloomington who had also become a community organizer, took a lead role in publicizing this connection and pressuring the city to remove Sarah and Doug's farm from their market. But when the city refused to do anything of the sort, Abby found herself in a fast-moving conflict that came to include the full spectrum of American politics: liberal elites, progressive organizers, antifascist activists, right-wing militias, farmers, customers, police, Black Lives Matter leaders… and of course, White nationalists (or in this particular case, as they preferred to be identified, White Identitarians). In a matter of weeks, the story hit mainstream national news, the farmers' market became a political battleground, and an Asian American professor was arrested by Bloomington Police — showing what it really looks like to wield White power in America. SPECIAL GUEST: Esmeralda Archer Founder of Anti Tutor Advocate of the Learning Process Disruptor of Traditional Education LEARN MORE! https://www.mystudypage.com/ https://www.mystudypage.com/fall2021 (homework club) https://www.mystudypage.com/testprep (SAT/ACT and other test prep) ABOUT ESMERALDA: Esmeralda Archer is an advocate of the learning process and a disruptor of traditional education. She has worked on this concept for the past 7 years with 20 years of teaching behind her. Hundreds of students across the country have used her services and are enjoying the freedoms of self-directed education as attendees of renowned universities such as Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Michigan to name a few. Her process is simple yet effective, giving students the ability to actively take control of their paths to success. She started teaching at Los Angeles Pierce College and quickly realized that struggling students were not having issues due to challenging material, but were failing because they did not know how to study. I believe the term “toxic masculinity” is just a contrived gateway term that lulls the American masses into a continued pathway toward the feminization of our society as a whole. If they can pull it off, it'll be a whole lot easier for the powers that be to get people to make more important decisions and life-changing policies and laws based on emotions and feelings rather than logic and reason. Let's face it: you're more likely to have to sacrifice something if you make decisions based on logic and reason. To do so requires self-discipline—something sorely lacking in too many people today. We're talking about the definition of toxic masculinity, and how to raise our sons in the thick of it, on today's License to Parent. Buddy Prow, LAPC, is the Primary Boys Therapeutic Counselor at Shepherd's Hill Academy. Buddy received his master's degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. He is currently pursuing his LPC and Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) certifications. His previous positions working with adults with addictions have led him to proactively reach the teens of our culture to teach them preventive methods for addictive behaviors. It is Buddy's desire to share his personal parenting point of view as a hurting parent of a once troubled teen himself. He wants to help families reunite in a healthy manner for love and support and to show them there is always hope in the unknown times of parenting a teen. Buddy is married. He has 10 children he calls “mine.” Of these 10 children, he has five biological daughters, two adoptive sons, two step-sons, and one foster daughter. When he is not occupied helping others, being a husband and a father, or studying, Buddy enjoys hunting and golfing. Raising Healthy Sons in a Toxic World Episode Highlights: Why is the term “toxic masculinity” used? How does hypocrisy impact young men today? Why does masculinity have such a bad rap today? How do we characterize godly masculinity? Does toxic femininity exist? What does it look like? What are some practical parenting tips for parents of boys? Picture via: Pixabay

David Baker is one of the most recent players to add his name to the World Poker Tour Champions Cup, having just taken down the L.A. Poker Classic main event for $1,015,000. The 46-year-old originally started as a salesman after graduating from Auburn University, and ultimately gave up a six-figure job to pursue his poker dream when his regular home game became too lucrative to ignore. Although Baker spends most of his playing time in high-stakes mixed games at the Commerce Casino, he does has a stellar track record at the World Series of Poker, having averaged nearly two final tables each summer for the last decade. In 2010, he finished 17th in the WSOP main event for $396,967, and he won a bracelet in 2012, earning $271,312 in the $2,500 eight-game mixed event. In 2015, Baker finished third in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship for another $514,926. In total, the Arizona resident has banked more than $5.5 million in live tournament earnings. Highlights from this interview include tearing himself away from a good cash game, the muscle memory of poker, being almost senior eligible, War Eagle, going to the racetrack as a kid, learning blackjack with his parents, drowning in credit reports, being the live one in Ray Henson's game, quitting a six-figure salary for poker, flying to Commerce Casino every other week, the bad beat he took to Carlos Mortensen, why he doesn't wear green at the poker table, his deep run in the WSOP main event, dealing with a lot of third-place finishes, forcing Cord Garcia to win the Colossus, how to become elite, staring at opponents to see the pain in their eyes, maintaining a good rep, and calling his shot as a WPT champion.

If you haven’t watched Teenwitch before listening, you should! It’s on Netflix! It’s a hair-heavy week on LAPC, which also means it’s been an incredibly slow pop culture news week, so we turn to the 1989 CLASSIC Teenwitch for our entertainment. Our friend Lisa, who is an avid Teenwitch fan and resident expert to discuss what exactly this movie was about, joins us. While we’re at it, we try to dissect and explain to Derek what a cult classic is (we still aren’t entirely sure). Finally Derek shows his patriotism in another round of “Derek Doesn’t Know the Words!” and we try to keep you up to date at the water cooler with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (seriously, it’s so good.) Hopefully next time there will be some more pop culture news to talk about, until then, enjoy the show and stay tubular! Don’t forget to rate and subscribe in iTunes! Episode #44 - Roland LAPC-I tunes The LAPC-I is an 8-bit ISA sound card for the IBM-PC, released by Roland in 1988. Containing the same technology of the Roland D-50, it allowed composers to create their own sounds at a much lower price. Being targetted towards home users, it was also supported in many MS-DOS games in the late 80s and early 90s. Unfortunately, most gamers couldn't afford one, so they missed out on superb music and were stuck with the cheaper Sound Blaster sound cards. This podcast has been put together to bring back the game music you once missed. Mixing by Vincenzo, jingle by Buzzer, logo #44 by KF, compiled by Sahkolihaa
