In Episode 291 of Where Brains Meet Beauty with Jodi Katz, the spotlight turns to two investors redefining what it means to back beauty and wellness brands: Kara LaForgia, Founder & Managing Partner at Hive Ventures, and Rich Gersten, Co-Founder & General Partner at True Beauty Ventures. Their paths to venture capital could not be more different, yet both reflect the persistence, gut instincts, and passion that this industry demands.Kara's story is one of constant reinvention. A lawyer by training, she started her career as an NFL sports agent, worked with Birdman and Lil Wayne at Cash Money Records, and went on to become the first employee at multiple startups before launching her own consulting business. From there, she began investing off her balance sheet, eventually managing capital for others and institutionalizing her approach under Hive Ventures. She describes herself as hands-on, gritty, and opportunistic, never afraid to step into an unfilled role or claim an open lane. For her, the ideal founder to back is someone who “eats, breathes, sleeps” their company, often an operator with deep experience at an early-stage brand who impresses her enough to think about them long after a meeting ends.Rich's trajectory looks more traditional, but with its own twists. After business school, he entered private equity as a generalist, covering consumer companies across food, supplements, and retail. More than 20 years ago, he stumbled into his first beauty investment, Avalon Natural Products, followed by DDF Skincare. What began as an assignment from the founder of his firm “spend half your time on beauty” became a lifelong focus. Though initially skeptical, Gersten came to see beauty as uniquely resilient and endlessly dynamic. He recalls attending his first Women's Wear Daily CEO Summit as the only private equity investor in the room, a stark contrast to today, where investors and bankers crowd those events alongside brand leaders. Five years ago, he co-founded True Beauty Ventures, a sector-specialized fund that now manages 20 brands across categories, channels, and geographies.Together, their perspectives reveal how beauty investing blends strategy with soul. The capital matters, but so do the founders, the vision, and the consumer connection. Both Hive Ventures and True Beauty Ventures may run lean teams, but they bring something more valuable than scale: deep expertise, empathy for founders, and an insider's feel for where consumer trends are headed. As Gersten puts it, to invest successfully in beauty, you have to love it. Anything less just doesn't stick.

RUNDOWN   Plenty of sports heartbreak — from the Dolphins' ongoing struggles to the Seahawks' gut-punch opener. But there is relief in the Mariners' explosive bats and the Huskies' video-game offense, before shifting gears to launch the annual Beat the Boys contest, presented by Fireside Home Solutions. Listeners get the scoop on how to re-register, this year's lineup of “the boys” (including a new addition, Jason Puckett), and the all-important first password. Along the way, the guys swap birthday trivia, share a Pink backstory you won't forget, and set the stage for a packed show of Seahawks, Mariners, and college football talk. Mitch and Hotshot dive into the Seahawks' frustrating Week 1 loss to the 49ers, where Sam Darnold's quiet debut and Riq Woolen's costly miscues overshadowed a defense that couldn't quite finish the job. They debate Mike Macdonald's decision to kick on a crucial 4th-and-1, the missing downfield threat without DK Metcalf, and whether Seattle's “smashmouth” identity is more talk than reality. Shifting gears, the guys celebrate the Mariners' offensive eruption — 28 runs over two games — that keeps them two games up in the Wild Card race with 19 left, 13 at home. Hope rises in Seattle, but fans have learned to brace for heartbreak. Mitch welcomes Brady Henderson and Jacson Bevens to dissect Seattle's 17–13 Week 1 loss to the 49ers. The defense largely held its ground, limiting San Francisco to 17 points, but the offense sputtered behind Sam Darnold and a conservative game plan. The panel debates Mike Macdonald's critical fourth-down decision, the ongoing frustrations with cornerback Riq Woolen, and the lack of offensive balance despite Jackson Smith-Njigba's breakout. Mitch sits down with Joe Doyle and Brady Farkas to break down a much-needed rebound weekend for the Mariners. With Julio Rodríguez heating up, a rotation trying to steady itself, and 13 of the final 19 games at home, the M's are still firmly in the postseason race. The crew debates Seattle's playoff odds, the outlook for Jorge Polanco's contract, and the development of young catcher Harry Ford. Plus, they preview crucial upcoming series against the Cardinals and Angels as the AL West chase tightens. Rick Neuheisel joins Mitch to recap an eventful Week 2 in college football, from South Florida's upset of Florida to Oregon's early dominance behind quarterback Dante Moore. The two dive into Florida's coaching hot seat, Jedd Fisch's future at Washington, and why Arch Manning's mechanics and rhythm remain under scrutiny as Texas gears up for the SEC gauntlet. Neuheisel also hands out “Chicken Caesar soft tacos” to standout players and duos across the country before making his Week 3 pick: Texas Tech to roll big over Oregon State.   GUESTS   Brady Henderson | Seahawks Insider, ESPN Jacson Bevens | Writer, Cigar Thoughts Brady Farkas | Host, Refuse to Lose Podcast (Mariners on SI) Joe Doyle | MLB Draft & Mariners Analyst, Over-Slot Substack Rick Neuheisel | CBS College Football Analyst, Former Head Coach & Rose Bowl Champion   TABLE OF CONTENTS   0:00 | Mitch & Hotshot Return: Seahawks Frustrations, Dolphins Woes, and Beat the Boys is Back 6:18 | BEAT THE BOYS, Presented by Fireside Home Solutions. In this episode of "The Def Fresh Show," Special Guest Duch of Everyday Media joins hosts Tone and Fresh and H.Kain dive into their wild weekend, tackling everything from runaway tents to surprise UFC-style smackdowns. They also break down the biggest news and music moments, sharing their unfiltered takes on artists like Bad Bunny, Lil Nas X, and Eminem. The conversation becomes heated as they debate everything from concert etiquette to the legacy of some of hip-hop's most iconic names. The show begins with the hosts joking about music before transitioning to a recap of their past weekend's events. They talked about how nice it was to get home at a decent time, around 10:00 or 10:30. A major part of their discussion revolves around a tent that they had trouble with at the event. They mention that a "nasty gust of wind" almost took their tent away. Another group had their tent "fucked up" by the wind and had to buy a new one. One host mentions buying a spring-loaded tent from Amazon and advises the other to get their money back for their broken one. They also talk about a woman named Dre, who they describe as "the highlight of the night" and "the life of the party".The hosts then pivot to discussing current events and news they've seen online. They mention Lil Nas X and his recent activities. Another significant topic is Rampage Jackson's son, who was involved in a backstage incident at a wrestling show. The hosts talk about how the son, despite knowing wrestling is scripted, "slammed folks on his neck" and hit the other wrestler with "like twenty-three punches," causing the opponent to be knocked out and lose teeth. They also discuss a video of Rampage Jackson himself putting his son in a guillotine choke to get him to tap out.

From there, things spiral like they always do.We're talking Cardi B in court for scratching a security guard, her lawyers sounding like they graduated from TikTok Law School, and the courtroom transcripts being pure comedy. Then we break down Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement saga. The ring, the prenup, Killer Trav's AIM-level Instagram handle, and why every boyfriend in America now has to pretend to be a Swifty for at least 48 hours. But I'm done. I swear on my Frenchie, LuBug's life, I'm done talking about Taylor and Travis after this episode. Until they do literally anything else and I have to bring it up again. From there, I get into Will Smith embarrassing himself again with AI tour promo videos full of melting faces and mutant hands. Out of the budding young music scene in northeast Ohio one artist who stood out to us was Elijah Rushin with his attention to detail in his music and overall branding. A few weeks back we had the pleasure of sitting down in person with Elijah for this interview and this week we're happy to present it in audio form for episode 269! Our primary point of topic was his latest album “Turbo” which saw the next step in his progression as an artist and also as a producer. While being able to mix and master the project himself he told us about the learning process that helped him along that journey and also the documentary he put together for the project with the help of videographer Joe Lewis. He also told us about the love he developed early on for music watching and listening to artists like Lil Wayne and Eminem in the 2000's and early 2010's. It was in these years where his music journey really took its shape and what led him to craft over 8 different bodies of work since 2018. We thank Elijah for allowing us to interview him in his home studio and are very excited to see what ways we can keep collaborating in the future! Also be sure to hear “Turbo” now streaming on all platforms!Submit a demo track(s) for release consideration with Proven Knowledge! - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1l_h_XayHVqWIJHgTYyV5vGgThfRVEiBh8lw9SP8DrQw/viewform?edit_requested=trueConsider becoming a monthly supporter of the show by visiting the link here

The August heat hasn't stopped an incredible wave of new music from washing over us this month. From jazz-soul fusion to K-pop dance anthems, our final summer mix of 2025 captures the season's last vibrant moments.John Batiste opens our collection with "Big Money," showcasing his extraordinary talent for blending genres while maintaining that distinctive New Orleans soul.  Chance the Rapper brings his signature wordplay to "Tree," collaborating with Lil Wayne and Smino for a track that's as clever as it is catchy. The long-awaited return of Clipse brings "E.B.I.T.D.A" to our mix, reuniting Pusha T and Malice under Pharrell Williams' production. Their first album since 2009 proves that quality always trumps quantity. Blackpink continues their global domination with "Jump," a high-energy dance track that solidifies their position as masters of contemporary pop production.Relationship themes weave throughout our selections this month. Eli Young Band explores the willingness to do anything for a partner in "All Good With Me," while AJR captures commitment anxiety with their characteristic honesty in "Betty." Chappell Roan delivers perhaps the most emotionally resonant track with "The Subway," chronicling that strange post-breakup journey when someone transitions from being your world to just another stranger passing by.Unexpected collaborations bring delightful surprises, including Spinal Tap teaming up with Elton John for an updated "Stonehenge" ahead of their sequel film. Meanwhile, newcomers Durry brilliantly tackle internet trolling culture in "Bully" with lyrics that will have you nodding in recognition. We round out the mix with Scottish singer-songwriter Amy McDonald's uplifting "The Hope," Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon returning with the confidence-boosting "Bear Hill," and Glass Animals maintaining their uniquely quirky sound with "Vampire Bat."Subscribe to Super Awesome Mix on your favorite podcast platform and follow us on Instagram and threads @superawesomemix to stay updated on all our latest episodes. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/sam-new-music-august-2025/pl.u-pm4mfdKjlz1.
