Andy is excited to be speaking with Greg Finck on this episode of The Wedding Biz. Greg is a brilliant photographer based in Paris. He studied business in France then came to the U.S to get his MBA. Greg was a marketing executive for ten years with Proctor and Gamble and at first, was doing wedding photography on the side as a hobby. Greg is now a major photographer even though he's technically only been doing it full-time for five years. Besides shooting significant weddings, he is doing fantastic work in the fashion world and has mastered marketing digitally in social media. He also gives master classes on photography and speaks at Engage. “Elegance is the only beauty that never fades,” a quote on his website from Audrey Hepburn summarizes the approach that Greg has to photography. Black and white photos are what he started out doing, giving him the ability to really focus on what he wanted to shoot in order to hone his eye. Greg talks to us about many things; his life in marketing, the catalyst for moving into photography professionally, and how glad he was that he took that leap of faith. He speaks about the niche he found with destination wedding photography, mostly taking place in Paris and other parts of Europe, doing fashion photography during the slow wedding season, and why he uses medium format film. Listen in as Greg shares with us his secrets to rapid success, how to manage your client's expectations and the tools to choose the right photographer. He discusses his tricks for calming the nerves of a bride and tells us what equipment he uses to get such fantastic shots. The knowledge Greg has acquired in his relatively short time as a full-time professional photographer is immense. His business acumen is on point, and his humility is second to none. If you want to learn how to build your business in any industry, this is a conversation you shouldn't miss. Have you heard about Stop and Smell the Roses with Preston Bailey on The Wedding Biz Network? Listen as Preston shares the secrets, tools, and technologies behind his extraordinary ability to create a theatrical environment out of any space. Also, don't forget about Sean Low's podcast The Business of Being Creative, where Sean discusses the power of being niched, pricing strategies, metrics of success, and so much more. They expanded into their 2nd location in 2011. They bought out a former 20 group member in Maine in 2013 as their 3rd location. They purchased a former Chevy/Chrysler 14 bay dealership in 2014. In 2016, they purchased an import auto service business and converted it to an Auto Care Plus (store #5). In 2017, they purchased a Volvo Specialty Repair Shop which they decided to then re-brand and create a new brand for us calling it Euro Care Plus. In 2019, we did our first non-acquisition “build to suit” venture erecting an 8 bay facility with upstairs offices for their Corporate headquarters. They also decided to lease the rest of that building where we are preparing to open a Hybrid/EV specialty division to be named Electrified Auto Care. They now have 7 locations (5 of which they own the dirt). 6 Locations in NH and one in ME. Listen to John's previous episodes https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=John+Manelas (HERE). Most profitable, but how many minutes walk out the door daily? Track the cost of the minutes wasted- $5 per minute. You can't put a price tag on a technician's ability. How do you affect efficiency? 1 person working 8 hours- 7.2 hours per day of production at 125% efficiency which equals 9 hours per day production. Managed chaos? Don't make promises you can't deliver on. Giving customer's hope that you'll look at their car but not promising same day repair because you're unsure of what repair will be The younger generation- typically wants structure and not be “beat up” every minute of the day. Dealership vs independent- dissatisfaction in the dealership world. Benefits and the work environment for independent shops is unparalleled. Technicians aren't “machines” that are rented. Career opportunity- showing path after school outside of attending colleges. Did you know technicians can make more than engineers? Consider onboard quick applications for career days. The professionalism of industry- be proud of industry and craft. Be passionate. Anyone can open an auto repair business without being trained or licensed or certified. Accomplish your goals with help (groups, network, training). There are no secrets. DVI's- embrace it, the most important part is the pictures and inspection is sent to customers. Visualization of issues brings a different perspective to customers. “Seeing is believing.” DVI pictures can also be used in your social media marketing campaigns for future customers to see. “Letting the car tell the story, DVI writes the tale for us.” Helps customers manage their budget for repairs when they can get updated on what is still in working order and what needs to be repaired. 4,000 cars per year with per 7 locations by $100 ticket increase sales= $2.8 million in an increase of sales. During the summer vacation, his dad would have Tom remove engines from the vehicles that were being sent to the local machine shop for rebuilding. In the past three and a half years, Tom and his dad have made strategic adjustments in the business. They are now a $2.5 million dollar a year shop with 10% annual growth and profitability. They continue to improve every day. Tom says he has the best team and a strong culture. In January 2017 Tom bought his dad completely out of the business. Tom struggled for many years because he had lost his passion for the auto industry. After receiving all the guidance and coaching over the past few years, he is rejuvenated and has more passion than ever and is currently doing everything he can to pay it forward to other local shop owners. Make impressions with every vehicle if you have it wrapped with your logo Tom is a front end guy,He wants to save money but also focuses on makin money He knows he has to balance the budget He finds extra sales upfront that more than covers his costs Greg hesitated for year to get into loaners until he found a company to help him get into them properlyHe researched with other shop owners to find their loaner strategy and their ROI He found that the numbers made sense and wondered why he hadn’t done it sooner Greg has GPS on each loaner Links discussed in the episode from Greg:Insurance Lancer: https://www.lancerinsurance.com/ (https://www.lancerinsurance.com/) Loaner manager: https://www.arsloaner.com/ (https://www.arsloaner.com/)Manage GPS Evaluates your ROI Handles extra fuel Creates a digital transaction Each client leaves with a signature on the loaner car agreement The vehicles that in the shop that had loaner cars had a large ticket Tom has 13 loaner cars and he does approximately 15 tickets a day. He has a high average ticket 50% of his customers take a loaner. If they don’t need it they don’t take it They balance the workflow and loaner schedule Risk is an inherent part of providing loaner cars Customer needs to have full coverage insurance Tom puts a portion of the costs of the loaners into marketing against his marketing budget Tom doesn’t have a minimum ticket to give out a loaner car. Even if an oil change he will give a loaner. Some dealers have a plateau or conditions that base if a customer gets a loaner car Greg believes he will add to his fleet. He may even get a pick-up truck to help his commercial accounts At the counter your two biggest objectionsTime: I need my car and can’t leave it (loaner car is tool to close that objections Financing: Give them this tool to help close Look at your opportunity costs. Key Talking Points Dealerships are the biggest competitor with independent shops Repair in 2015-2018 went from 27% market share to 30% Independent went from 33% to 30%, now tied with dealerships Maintenance increased market share with expanse of quick lube market Independent held steady 23% market share 6/10 car owners with a current warranty will go back to the dealer 3/10 car owners with expired warranty don’t go back- service too expensive, less convenient Dealerships gaining ground with recalls Data and technology increase within vehicles causes certain customers to want to go back to dealerships for repairs How do you change the customer’s mentality? Advertising for independents Start with educating customers: Show around the shop and tell them what you have to offer and capable of Grow with technology and show customers: Tablets for techs, digital inspections texted to phones An advertising idea: ‘We Get High on High Tech’ You connect your phone to your car. Are we giving away a lot of our services? Greg is in the transportation business. Do we need to re-think saying yes to our customer’s needs? We are pigeonholing ourselves in just one area of repair? Enhance the 20% of our customer base that gives us 80% of our volume. He wants to see shop owners go after newer client types and utilize your current infrastructure to create additional revenue opportunities. If you say no enough you’ll be closed. The opioid epidemic has devastated our country claiming many loved ones along the way. Back in November of 2017, Bill Sternberg, USA Today editorial page Editor, lost his son Scott to an overdose. Through his grief, Bill decided to share Scott’s story in an attempt to help spread awareness and possibly help others struggling with this disease. Scott was prescribed a 30-day prescription for opioids coming off an emergency surgical procedure. Although it was considered common practice, this is, unfortunately many people’s introduction to opioids and can often start them down the path of addiction. Scott, like many others, lost his battle with opioids shortly after. Greg joins Bill as the two of them discuss many of the obstacles that people face when battling this disease. One of the largest hurdles is to break the stigma behind addiction and avoiding dangerous clichés, such as “hitting rock bottom.” Hear Greg and Bill discuss how the epidemic has evolved and various steps our country has taken to combat the crisis.

Jeremy also owns an independent auto repair shop, Freedom Automotive in Hesperia, CA. Jeremy’s previous episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22Jeremy+O%27Neal%22) . Key Talking Points Chris Chesney: Exciting times to be in the industry. Niche vs Specialty With ADAS on the horizon a big opportunity Differentiate yourself by doing the job right the first time. Do the basics right. Niche Offer your service in a way that no one else does. A segment in your service that distinguishes yourself so the customer comes back for more. Get your act together in your core services before expanding into other services and specialties. Tough to give full service and to be the best serving all platforms in the future. Equipment investment and training are factors. Unless you have a specialist in each platform on your team. Greg Buckley’s shop is qualified as a child safety seat center and works with many hospitals, companies, and police services as a go-to as an authorized child seat fitment professional. Greg also started an up-fitting services division (specialty) working with fire rescue, police and commercial vehicles. He recently up-fitted a fire and rescue gator. He is an automotive services enterprise not just a repair shop and will invest in the right equipment and people, but will always research the opportunity before ever jumping in. Market research based on opportunity and investment is critical. Do not bring your hobby to your company. It is tough to make money with your hobby. There are very few exceptions. ADAS will be a specialty as we get to move through time. Very precise type of work that will require a large investment. You can serve the collision industry as a local ADAS expert. Five to ten years ADAS will be core. Many small business owners get stuck on what is working today. Your current market may get depleted. By looking at emerging market opportunities you can be first to market and dominant player in your market. Greg likes to look at the money trail. Apple will be in the mobility business. Europe says that may just have hit peak car sales! We have given up opportunities, as an industry, such as doing radio installs, tinting, and glass as examples. We just want to fix cars, why not everything automotive? Ask your customer. What can I do to help you? Establish the different service points that our clients want help with and to find what the market is telling us. Your comfort zone may be holding you back. Product based Niche vs. Service Based Niche – Huge Difference. Product Niche’s typically taking more capital and specialized labor Service Niche’s typically required less capital and is easier to shift. Examples:...
OK here is how Geek Talk 2.0 got started. In the Town Hall Academy on SMS systems (https://remarkableresults.biz/a065/) we got on a ‘tech talk’ roll. It got very interesting and at the end of the episode, we decided to create this episodic series called Geek Talk 2.0. Talking Geek can be a full-time job in our industry. With tech changing at light speed, we thought it a good idea to talk about it and maybe even debate it in an episodic series. Our goal will be to inform you of important tech areas of your business that you need to pay attention to. In this episode, we talk cloud-based systems, how to protect yourself from ransomware, a little ADAS talk and why your involvement in the laws of your state regarding autonomy and who controls the data is so important. OK here is how Geek Talk 2.0 got started. In the Town Hall Academy on SMS systems episode (https://remarkableresults.biz/a065/) we got on a ‘tech talk’ roll. Having an independent at the table will make a big difference for the aftermarket. It involves shortening the legal process and engaging with users immediately upon arrest. Discover the difference Smith’s new thinking is making and how it is successfully meeting the educational, vocational and counseling needs of this at-risk population.
