HOUR ONE: It's rumored that an arcade game from 1980 might lead to the real death of its players. We'll look at the death curse of Berzerk. (The Berzerker Death Curse, And The Polybius Urban Legend) *** And another arcade game in the early 80s was surrounded by controversy – because the game never existed, despite so many saying it did. Or did it exist? We'll look at the urban legend of Polybius. (The Urban Legend of Polybius)==========HOUR TWO: Was Stanley Stiers the real-life inspiration for Michael Myers in 1978's John Carpenter film, “Halloween?” (The Real Michael Myers) *** The last known words of Peter Rugg were “Let the storm increase! I will see home tonight in spite of the last tempest, or I may never see home!" Over two-hundred years later and he has yet to make it home – but that hasn't stopped his tempest! (The Eternal Ride of Peter Rugg) *** Imagine attending college for several years, only to find out that the whole time you've been studying on top of the corpses of thousands of mental patients. That's exactly what happened in 2013 when The University of Mississippi made plans to expand parking for their students and staff. (The Corpses Under The University of Mississippi) *** Dealing with a ghost or two is awful enough – but what if you're attacked by a whole gang of ghouls? It was reported as real news in 1889's Chicago Tribune! (A Whole Gang O' Ghosts) *** People With Super Powers!==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: Michael Bryson disappeared on August 5th, 2020 from Hobo Campground at Umpqua National Forest. He has yet to be found. (The Disappearance of Michael Bryson) *** When it comes to cryptids, you have many to choose from – Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the chupacabra, the list goes on and on. But I'm willing to bet nowhere on the list of your favorite cryptids, or even the cryptids you've ever heard of, do you have an entry for “The Belled Buzzard” of Texas. (The Belled Buzzard Legend) *** When the Black Plague arrived at Eyam's doorstep in the 17th century, its villagers were forced to choose between life or certain doom. It's the tragic tale of England's Plague Village. We're diving deep into the dark waters of Leech Lake—not the one in Minnesota (though we'll explore that later), but the mysterious and enchanted lake from the Practical Magic book series. In Alice Hoffman's story, this version of Leech Lake resides in Massachusetts. It's said to be home to a serpent-like water creature that Faith Owens befriends—a being cloaked in shadow and folklore. The Owens women often swim in its waters, though they're never able to dive beneath the surface, only float. It's also aplace marked by tragedy, with more than one drowning said to have occurred there. But our journey doesn't end with Leech Lake. We'll be castingour net wider to explore legendary sea serpents and monsters from across cultures and mythologies—from the elusive Loch Ness Monster to the ancient and fearsome Leviathan... And also with Leviathan, comes yet another unexpected Practical Magic Soundtrack connection! The Magnolia Street Podcast intends to discuss the movie, “Practical Magic” in its entirety. This will evidently result in spoilers and it is recommended that you watch and or read the following. Alice Hoffman's: Practical Magic, Rules of Magic, Magic Lessons, Book of Magic. You may have heard of Tom Slick, the man who financed many early expeditions in search of Sasquatch both the in US and internationally. But did you know he was also a scientist, military man, inventor, philanthropist, and much more? Learn the strange, fascinating and tragically short history of Thomas Baker Slick Jr. with Heather Moser, Mark Matzke and guest host Aaron Deese. Email - Monsteropolis@smalltownmonsters.com SHOW NOTES Monsteropolis: Tom Slick Welcome back, you lawless knaves. READER MAIL - got at least one - HERE IT IS, from our friend Christine! — Hi Guys, First of all, congratulations on the success of your 10th anniversary Kickstarter! I can't wait to see your new films, especially The Siege of Ape Canyon and The Kinderhook Creature. I listened with interest to the Monsteropolis episode where you described the changing nature of the appearance of the Wendigo in popular culture from an emaciated human being to one with antlers and a stag's skull. In the fall last year I became aware of the legend of the Leshy of pagan Slavic culture through an excellent YA novel called "Where the Dark Stands Still" by Polish writer A.B. Poranek. When I googled the Leshy I was astounded to see images of what I recognised as the Wendigo. So this got me thinking - is there a Slavic influence at play here too? Perhaps this is something you could look in to! I am really looking forward to the book and film regarding the Wendigo which I understand may come out next year. I have been fascinated by the Wendigo since reading Algernon Blackwood's novella and there is one passage in particular that always sticks in my mind: "And soon after he slept, the change of wind he had divined stirred gently the reflection of the stars within the lake. Rising among the far ridges of the country beyond Fifty Island Water, it came from the direction in which he had stared, and it passed over the sleeping camp with a faint and sighing murmur through the tops of the big trees that was almost too delicate to be audible. With it, down the desert paths of night, though too faint, too high even for the Indian's hair-like nerves, there passed a curious, thin odor, strangely disquieting, an odor of something that seemed unfamiliar—utterly unknown." In what is likely to be one of the major science stories of the year, Texas-based Colossal Biosciences has brought the dire wolf—or at least something very close to this ice age canine—back from extinction, with the help of genetic engineering. The remarkable achievement has been met with awe, praise, and also controversy, as experts debate the exact nature of the "dire wolves" the company has created, as well as the implications of the breakthrough and the creation of what some might call life not as we know it. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we take a look at the remarkable news, as well as the current state of genetic science, and whether it could one day be used on humans. Finally, we also turn our attention toward popular science fiction and bizarre theories regarding alien life, and whether questions about human contact with non-human forms of intelligence might involve advanced genetic engineering. The animals we share Britain with mean far more to us than we realise. Beyond the obvious companionship, food and farming, they are a part of our folklore, our language and intertwined with our lives. Karen Jones, professor of environmental and cultural history at the University of Kent, has long been fascinated by the creatures that populate our island, and our interactions with them. We're delighted that she came on to the Country Life Podcast to talk about the importance they have, from the fairy stories of wolves, foxes and the Loch Ness Monster to the hooting owls, the sheep we count to get to sleep and the red herrings which crop up in our lives.• Listen to Country Life podcast on Apple Podcasts• Listen to Country Life podcast on Spotify• Listen to Country Life podcast on AudibleKaren has collected her thoughts in a book, Beastly Britain, published in May, which looks at foxes and hedgehogs, newts and beetles, ghostly hounds and the legendary creatures who still generate new stories to this day. It's a fascinating read and comes warmly recommended.Beastly Britain is published on 13 May 2025 (Yale University Press, £20) — see more details or order a copy here.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Professor Karen JonesProducer and editor: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. Well well well, let's all give a warm virtual welcome to TCF's newest host! He's so switched on, it's almost like he's made for it.Although, we have enough host action going on to keep us entertained with just our regular three: We have a time travelling child host coming back to cosplay as other hosts, a normal travelling host on a mission to coat tail another host, and a celebrity host and a not-so celebrity host meeting celebrity non-hosts, giving celeb-envy to another host…host hosty hosts! In this flotilla of information you will sail past the first Loch Ness Monster sighting of 2025, adorable wooly mice created by a whole company of genetically engineered employees, national cheesy naan crazes, and World-Record breaking vegetables making some oddly familiar noises.
