In this episode Nina Hershberger talks with Adam Marburger, a serial entrepreneur who has built several successful companies including Ascent Dealer Services, Dental Protection Group, and Marburger Coaching and Development.Adam has an impressive background, starting his entrepreneurial journey at just 13 years old with 3 paper routes. He then went on to work in the restaurant and automotive industries before launching his own businesses. What's most remarkable about Adam's story is how he was able to turn personal tragedy into professional triumph. In 2019, Adam faced unimaginable losses – his stepfather had a stroke and passed away, his business partner took his own life, and Adam's grandfather also passed away. On top of that, Adam and his wife of 13 years separated and divorced. Understandably, Adam found himself in a dark place, living in a spare bedroom at his grieving mother's house. However, instead of staying stuck in that negative mindset, Adam had a pivotal moment where he looked in the mirror and realized “you're the f-ing problem.” This mindset shift sparked Adam to make dramatic changes. He cut out toxic relationships, got healthy, and dove headfirst into his businesses. Over the next few years, Adam's companies exploded with growth as he worked tirelessly, often putting in 18-hour days.Today, Adam's businesses are thriving. Ascent Dealer Services is a dominant force in the insurance products market for car, RV, and marine dealerships. Adam attributes much of his success to his team – he's built a culture of servant leaders who truly understand the retail automotive industry. Adam also shares how he's leveraged social media to build his personal brand and attract new clients. This episode is a must-listen for any entrepreneur who has faced adversity. Adam's story is a powerful reminder that failure and hardship can be the catalyst for immense growth, both personally and professionally. Listeners will walk away inspired to reframe their mindset, double down on their efforts, and pursue their dreams no matter what obstacles they may face.To learn more about Adam Marburger and his businesses, visit AdamMarburger.com. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for January 15, 2024.It's Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Iowa Caucus Day. It also is very, very cold today.According to the National Weather Service it will be partly sunny with a high near -3 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area. Wind chill values could be as low as -40 degrees. The one silver lining is it will gradually become slightly warmer as the week goes on, and weather models for the following weeks have temperatures bouncing back into the 20s and 30s.But until those predictions come to pass, make sure to bundle up.The Perry High School Principal who put himself in harm's way to protect students during a school shooting earlier this month died on Sunday,According to reporting from the Associated Press, Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger was critically injured during the Jan. 4 attack. Marburger was commended by public safety officials for putting himself in danger in an attempt to protect his students.Likewise, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a statement in reaction to the news."Our entire state is devastated by the news of Dan Marburger's death," Gov. Reynolds said in a statement Sunday. "Dan courageously put himself in harm's way to protect his students, and ultimately gave his own life to save them. He will forever be remembered for his selfless and heroic actions. May he rest in peace."An 11-year-old middle school student was killed in the shooting, and six other people were injured. The 17-year-old student who opened fire also was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. With mounting scientific evidence showing exercise can reduce stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression, one Iowa State University associate professor wants to know why and how, and whether the type and amount of exercise matters.ISU associate professor of kinesiology Jacob Meyer recently landed two National Institute of Mental Health grants providing him resources to try to answer those questions. The longer of the two projects — a $3.6 million, five-year study — gives him three years to recruit 200 adults with depression for a 16-week trial to test whether resistance training, also known as weight training, can be as helpful as aerobic exercise like running or biking has been shown to be.The second, a $1.5 million, two-year study, aims to explore whether exercise might amplify benefits of therapy. These inquiries are a continuation of Meyer's research into the impact of exercise on depression, From 2020 to 2022, Meyer and his ISU team led smaller pilot studies that produced “promising results” about the benefits of exercise. They found — among other things — that 30 minutes of exercise might reduce depression symptoms for at least 75 minutes after the workout and also amplify therapy benefits. The Gazette's reporters and photographers will be getting plenty of exercise tonight for the Iowa Caucus. The Gazette will have caucus coverage tonight on thegazette.com, a liveblog featuring on-the-scene photos and thoughts from voters, and will have several pages of coverage in the E-edition of the Gazette for Tuesday morning. Head to thegazette.com for information about how to participate in the caucus, caucus results as they come in and candidate reactions to those results. Stay warm everybody.

His recently released book, "You're the F*cking Problem" explores how we can get out of our own way to create the life and business of our dreams. What we discuss in this episode: Adam shares that he is a giant work in progress. "I'm a God-loving and God-fearing, man. I'm a father to three incredible, incredible little girls. Um, I'm kind of a psychopath for business. Um, I'm a junkie for personal development, um, and I'm a work in progress every single day. I just try to get a little bit better knowing that I'm extremely flawed. Um, I'm patient with myself now a little more than I used to be, and I'm extremely self-aware and being self-aware has allowed me to do more than I've ever done in my life. So that's kind of in a nutshell who I am and, and, and who, what I like to do." Adam shares his backstory of living with a father who had a drinking problem, and a mother who "covered it up with perfume." He recalls a specific experience where he decided that he didn't want to be anything like his father and that someday he would make something of himself. There are many defining moments that help shape who we are today. Those experiences, either good or bad, have a unique way of shaping and refining us. For Adam, it was when his daughter was born. "Something kind of snapped inside of me. God blessed me with this little girl. I have a lot of responsibility — I have to make some changes including some of the things I was doing and some of the people I was hanging out with." A few months ago Melanie and I decided it would be fun to have conversations with a few of our favorite Instagram influencers, and we're kicking that off today with this BONUS EPISODE. We're talking with Caroline from Lucky Peacock Designs, and you've no doubt heard us mention her on the podcast one or 78 times. Caroline posts lots of beautiful interior design pictures, and she's also an amazing curator of great finds from Amazon, Target, and Walmart - among other places. We talk in this episode about Caroline's love for estate sales, her best advice for shopping estate sales, her Round Top Antique Week suggestions, and how to throw a killer Three's Company-themed cocktail party. Plus a bunch of other stuff. She's a delight! Hope y'all enjoy - and we'll be back later this week with Episode 276! - Our Amazon Shop - Become a Patron Show Notes: - Lucky Peacock Designs on Instagram - Helen Corbitt Cooks for Company - Caroline's estate sale source - oyster plates - Marburger at Round Top Sponsors: - OSEA Malibu (use promo code BIGBOO for 10% off your first order) - Daily Harvest (use this link to get up to $40 off your first order)
