Ep 054 – Nonfiction. Historian Stephen R. Platt discusses his new book, “The Raider: The Untold Story of a Renegade Marine and the Birth of U.S. Special Forces in World War II.”‘The extraordinary life of forgotten World War II hero Evans Carlson, commander of America's first special forces, secret confidant of FDR, and one of the most controversial officers in the history of the Marine Corps, who dedicated his life to bridging the cultural divide between the United States and China“He was a gutsy old man.” “A corker,” said another. “You couldn't find anyone better.” They talked about him in hushed tones. “This Major Carlson,” wrote one of the officers in a letter home, “is one of the finest men I have ever known.”These were the words of the young Marines training to be among the first U.S. troops to enter the Second World War—and the Major Carlson they spoke of was Evans Carlson, a man of mythical status even before the war that would make him a military legend.By December of 1941, at the age of forty-five, Carlson had already faced off against Sandinistas in the jungles of Nicaragua and served multiple tours in China, where he embedded with Mao's Communist forces during the Sino-Japanese War. Inspired by their guerilla tactics and their collaborative spirit—which he'd call “gung ho,” introducing the term to the English language—and driven by his own Emersonian ideals of self-reliance, Carlson would go on to form his renowned Marine Raiders, the progenitors of today's special operations forces, who fought behind Japanese lines on Makin Island and Guadalcanal, showing Americans a new way to do battle. In The Raider, Cundill Prize–winning historian Stephen R. Platt gives us the first authoritative account of Carlson's larger-than-life exploits: the real story, based on years of research including newly discovered diaries and correspondence in English and Chinese, with deep insight into the conflicted idealism about the Chinese Communists that would prove Carlson's undoing in the McCarthy era.Tracing the rise and fall of an unlikely American war hero, The Raider is a story of exploration, of cultural (mis)understanding, and of one man's awakening to the sheer breadth of the world.'Subscribe to the War Books podcast here:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@warbookspodcastApple: https://apple.co/3FP4ULbSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3kP9scZFollow the show here:Twitter: https://twitter.com/warbookspodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/warbookspodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/warbookspodcast/

Military historian and author Carole Engle Avriett joins us to tell the powerful story of U.S. Navy Mess Attendant Charles Jackson French, which is told in her new book, Midnight in Ironbottom Sound: The Harrowing World War II Story of Heroism in the Shark-Infested Waters of Guadalcanal. Charles Jackson French was born into a poor family in the segregated south in 1919. Before turning 18 years old, French lost both of his parents and was hit by the Great Depression. In 1937, he joined the U.S. Navy. He later left the service but re-enlisted after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.French then served in the galley aboard the USS Gregory, an old World War I destroyer which was retrofitted to carry Marine Raiders into combat in the South Pacific. In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Avriett tells us about the harrowing events of September 4-5, 1942, when the Gregory and its sister ship were spotted and sunk in Sealark Channel off of Guadalcanal. She explains what Charles Jackson French did for hours after the ship was fatally struck to save as many as 15 lives in those shark-filled waters. She also tells us about the powerful moment the following morning that French cherished until the day he died.Avriett details the leadership of LCDR Harry Bauer, who commanded the USS Gregory on that fateful night and also demonstrated courage and selflessness under fire. And she takes us back to another devastating night in that same channel just a month earlier - the Battle of Savo Island - and how Sealark Channel became known as Ironbottom Sound.

“The Evolution of U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations”: Insights from John DaileyJohn Dailey is a retired Marine Force Recon sniper and member of Detachment One, the first USMC unit in SOCOM. A veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, he now trains Marine Raiders and holds multiple master's degrees, including an MFA in creative writing. He is also the author of Tough Rugged Bastards. Over the course of his career, John played a pivotal role in shaping the Marine Corps' special operations capabilities, including the formation of the Marine Raiders. From his early days in Force Recon to deploying alongside Navy SEALs in Iraq, John's experience spans some of the most transformative moments in modern military history. In this episode, John shares a powerful insight that has shaped both his military career and his life beyond service:"When the mission changes, your mindset must change with it. Adaptability isn't just a skill; it's a survival tool.”This mindset defined John's ability to lead through shifting roles, new threats, and unexpected challenges. After 9/11, as the Marine Corps was tasked with creating a new special operations unit, John found himself at the forefront of this transformation. Working alongside Colonel Robert Coates, John helped form the Marine Corps' first special operations unit, which would later become the Marine Raiders. Their initial deployment alongside Navy SEALs in Iraq in 2004 marked a turning point for the Marine Corps' role in SOCOM and the wider special operations landscape.John's philosophy on leadership, adaptability, and teamwork is deeply rooted in his military experience. He emphasizes that even support roles — mechanics, medics, and administrative staff — were vital to mission success. "Everybody fights," John recalls. "That mindset kept us prepared for anything.”Mental Fortitude and Problem-Solving: The ability to navigate high-stress situations and solve problems under pressure is crucial in special operations. John's resilience and growth throughout his career serve as an inspiration for aspiring operators and veterans alike.Since retiring, John has continued to share his insights on leadership, resilience, and the importance of finding purpose after military service. His book, Tough Rugged Bastards, blends personal stories with actionable lessons for overcoming adversity and embracing change. For those navigating their own transitions — whether in the military, corporate world, or personal life — John's message is clear: adaptability, teamwork, and purpose are the cornerstones of success.John's remarkable journey, from the sands of Iraq to mentoring others through his writing, stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring strength of the Marine Corps spirit. Why You Should Listen: This episode is a deep dive into the world of special operations, filled with historical context, personal stories, and valuable lessons. Want to know more about Elizabeth? "Elizabeth Fried, Ph.D. Bio Dr. Elizabeth Fried, The San Marcos Medium, refers to herself as a Medium by Choice, because her ability to connect with departed loved ones did not come naturally. It was a learned skill—and she wants you to know that you, too, can learn this skill. Before embracing mediumship, she ran a business for 40 years, spending her time as an executive coach, deeply immersed in the corporate world. Her days revolved around strategy, logic, and measurable outcomes. It was fulfilling work, but life had other plans for her. Her first encounter with the spirit world happened in the most unlikely of settings—her office. A moment of pure, overwhelming love swept over her, accompanied by a golden light that filled the room. It was a turning point, one that propelled her into exploring mediumship with the same rigor she once applied to corporate challenges. Today, as an evidential medium, she uses this structured approach to help clients connect with their loved ones in spirit. Her readings aren't about vague predictions or generalized messages; they're about delivering clear, specific evidence that brings peace and validation. Evidential mediumship is a unique practice designed to provide proof of life after death. It goes beyond comforting platitudes, offering clients detailed information that confirms the presence of their loved ones. After considerable training and practice, she discovered her reading accuracy is consistently between 70 and 100%. Her greatest joy is delivering uplifting and healing messages from departed loved ones.  Recently she found her skill extends to animals as well, and she provides heavenly messages from your beloved pets–they have souls too! Her other passion is a deep commitment to supporting our nation's heroes. For the past eight years she has provided pro bono coaching for The Honor Foundation, a non-profit organization serving our nation's elite military: Navy SEALs, Marine Raiders, Delta Force, Green Berets, Army Rangers, etc. Here, she combines her professional coaching expertise with her mediumship skills. She not only helps them transition from the military to the civilian workforce but also donates every dollar from her readings to expand their programs. It is her way of giving back to those who've sacrificed so much for our country." Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts about the show in this short feedback survey. By doing so, you will be entered to receive a signed copy of one of our host's three books on military and veteran mental health. About Today's GuestDerek Abbey, Ph.D. is Project Recover's President and CEO. He served for 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. His academic research and his post-military career have focused on connecting veterans with college opportunities, He began as Project Recover team member in 2004 and spent five years on the Board of Directors before being appointed as President / CEO.Derek Abbey grew up in Seattle. He was the only child of a single mom doing the best she could to raise a “rambunctious boy.”  Her unexpected death when Derek was 13 turned his life upside-down. For four years, he lived primarily with his aunt and uncle. Finally, at 17, Derek ran away to the Marine Corps. Derek Abbey had been without a rudder and sail for most of his life. In the USMC, he found a structure and system he could succeed in.First, he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a communicator. After his initial enlistment, the Marine Corps selected him for a commissioning program and sent him to Oregon State University to earn a degree. Upon receiving his degree he was commissioned as a ground officer. Finally, Derek was selected for an aviation contract while completing the six months long Basic School. This combination of events, going into the military and then to college, set the stage for Derek's academic and professional accomplishments. It also is the seed that gave rise to a passion for connecting veterans with educational opportunities. It is also, of course, the precursor which led up to his current role with Project Recover.Derek Abbey attended flight school in Pensacola FL and graduated as a Naval Flight Officer. He was then sent to the F/A-18 Hornet Fleet Replacement Squadron at MCAS Miramar where he earned his designation as an F/A-18 Weapons Systems Officer. He was then immediately assigned to his first squadron, VMFA(AW)-121, and deployed for Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Over the next few years, he deployed two more times to Iraq and once to the Far East. He holds more combat hours in the Hornet than hours in peaceful skies. After an extended and successful tour in the Hornet, Derek left flight operations to become a Plank Owner (original member) at Marine Corps Special Operations Command as the Air Officer for the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, now 1st Raider Battalion. During this period with the Marine Raiders, he served in Marine Special Operations Company Delta and was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as their Forward Air Controller, Special Operations JTAC, and Executive Officer. In 2009, Derek was selected by the Marine Corps for the Advanced Degree Program and assigned to the University of San Diego. “In 2009-2011, there was a huge influx of military into higher education. Universities were figuring out how to work with these populations.” While earning a Masters in Higher Education Leadership, Derek conducted research on how universities and colleges work with military-connected students on their campuses. His thesis provided best practices for colleges to use in creating successful military programs on their campuses. In his twilight tour from 2011-2014, Derek served as the Director of the Marine Corps' Train the Trainer School in Camp Lejeune, NC. His organization was responsible for the training and education of instructors, curriculum developers, staff and leadership of 93 training units across the Marine Corps. Derek retired from the USMC as a Major in 2014. Shortly thereafter, he began his doctorate in Leadership Studies at the University of San Diego. Derek focused again on conducting practical research that would help make higher education more accessible to veterans, the majority of whom would be first-generation college students. His research has garnered national attention and resulted in multiple speaking engagements. Derek earned his Ph.D. in 2019.Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, Derek began working at San Diego State University as a Military Liaison Officer in the Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center. In this position, he focused on outreach to the military-connected students in the region in order to provide guidance for them attaining their higher education goals. In 2015, he took over the Military and Veterans Program at The University of San Diego.  During his time with USD, he created and implemented programming that resulted in the growth of the military-connected population by 30% and the program being recognized as one at the top in the nation. Derek was the advocate for this population not only at USD but on other campuses in the region through the Military Ally program and with organizations across the nation attempting to provide better educational guidance for the military population.  In 2017, Derek took over West Coast Operations for the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) as the Senior Director of the West and Northwest Regions. TMF is a veterans service organization that works to unite the American community through programming that emphasizes the value of strong character. In this role, he oversaw the strategy development, program implementation and expansion, budget execution, and evaluation in TMF's largest geographical region. Links Mentioned in this Episode Project Recover Web SitePsychArmor Resource of the WeekFor this week's PsychArmor resource of the week is an episode of the Behind the Mission Podcast, episode 153 with Christina Slentz and the League of Wives Memorial Project. John A. Dailey is a USMC MARSOC Instructor that's trained hundreds of Marine Raiders across his over 20 years in the military. An early Force Reconnaissance Sniper, John witnessed the 9/11 attacks from a pub in Australia before getting shipped out to Afghanistan to help kick off the War on Terror. Later, he'd serve alongside his fellow 'tough rugged bastards' as a team leader at Detachment-1 in 2004, hunting insurgents, bomb-makers, and other HVT's in what would lead to the formation of the Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC). in 2008 he retired, taking a job that has him still training Raiders while penning his memoir 'Tough Rugged Bastards: A Memoir of a Life in Marine Special Operations'. He leads Agoge, a coaching company that empowers individuals to pursue their potential by developing strength, confidence, and leadership. He discussed the Squire program, a transformative rite of passage for young men that Nick personally embraced by guiding his nephew through it, highlighting the crucial need for positive male role models in young boys' lives. The conversation evolved to address the challenges of modern parenting, particularly the tendency to overprotect children at the expense of their personal growth and resilience. This led to a broader discussion about the importance of generational wisdom transfer and traditional rites of passage, with both hosts emphasizing the need for parents to create environments where children can develop both physically and emotionally through facing and overcoming challenges. www.thedadedge.com/502 www.thedadedge.com/alliance www.nickkoumalatsos.com www.thedadedge.com/squire

Frank Wright joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, when he was just 16 years old. Before long, he became one of the famed Marine Raiders. After deploying first to Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, Wright contracted malaria and had to spend time recovering. After that, he was part of Marine landings on many different islands in the Pacific, including Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima.A few weeks ago, we shared Wright's story of landing on Guam, fighting off Japanese Banzai charges, and engaging in hand-to-hand combat. He described how he was stabbed by a bayonet multiple times and not only lived to tell about it, but kept fighting until Guam was secure. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles, Wright tells us his story of service at Iwo Jima. He explains the grim reason why his Marine unit arrived a day late on Iwo Jima and being knocked unconscious from shrapnel hitting him in the head. We'll also talk about John's motivation for writing the book and the benefits of getting an MFA in creative writing. We discuss the difference between recon Marines and force recon, and the role of force recon in working for the force commander. And we also touch on the importance of a culture of accountability and constructive criticism in high-performing organizations. Having an MFA in creative writing can provide the confidence and skills needed to write a book. Force recon Marines work for the force commander and operate deeper behind enemy lines compared to recon Marines. A culture of accountability and constructive criticism is important in high-performing organizations. Imposter syndrome can be a driving force for excellence and continuous improvement. Custom building a unit allows for the development of new SOPs and procedures that can improve mission success. Training and preparation for deployment can vary depending on the mission and location. CQB (Close Quarters Battle) becomes a main mission focus for force recon Marines deployed to Iraq. The first Marine Special Operations Company (DETF-1) faced challenges and successes during their deployment to Iraq in 2003. Intelligence support played a crucial role in their operations, and the unit had a strong focus on the basics of shooting, moving, communicating, and surviving. The creation of the Marine Raiders was a significant development in Marine Special Operations. John A. Dailey plans to continue writing and has future projects in mind, including books on military life lessons and mental toughness. He is also involved in coaching and training Marine Raiders.

John Dailey remembers the day he decided to become a U.S. Marine. He was a young boy at a U.S. bicentennial parade in 1976. When he saw the Marine in dress uniform, he was hooked. Eleven years later, fresh out of high school, Dailey enlisted in the Marines. Soon he was guarding the U.S. embassy in Hungary while the Iron Curtain was teetering and later held the same role in Argentina. He also passed sniper and reconnaissance training. But in his first 14 years of service, he never saw combat. That is until 9/11 happened while he was half a world away.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Dailey tells us how he learned of the devastating attacks on our nation, how he was among the first Marines in Afghanistan, and the judgment and decisiveness he exercised in his first combat duties there. Then Dailey explains how he helped to stand up a U.S. Marine Corps recon unit and get it ready for service in Iraq. He also takes us along for the ride as he recounts what it took to find and capture high value targets in Iraq and how he put his sniper skills to use against allies of radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.Finally, Dailey details why the special operations unit was disbanded after he returned to the U.S. and how he soon worked to help establish the the Marines' own special operations command (MARSOC) and the current generation of Marine Raiders. He is also the author of "Tough Rugged Bastards: A Memoir of a Life in Marine Special Operations."

Why You Self-Sabotage

As someone who's transitioned from a high-paced life in the military to civilian life, I can tell you firsthand how challenging that journey can be. One of the biggest hurdles I faced was the need to address past traumas and patterns of self-sabotage that had built up over the years. I realized that unresolved issues can seriously hold you back, preventing you from moving forward and reaching your full potential. For me, it was crucial to confront these problems head-on. Therapy, allowing myself to be vulnerable, and having honest conversations were key in this process. I had to take ownership of my experiences, forgive myself and others, and make a conscious effort to work on my mental health. It might seem counterintuitive, but the path of least resistance can lead to complacency and unfulfilled potential.   That's unfortunately the path most people are on.   Choosing the easy way out can cause anxiety, stress and a false sense of security that hinders our growth. The reality is: real growth comes from facing challenges head-on, pushing through discomfort, and staying off the beaten path.   It's the pressure and stress from these tough situations that drive us to grow, learn, and ultimately achieve our highest potential.   Should we be willing to step out of our comfort zone for the sake of true growth? Can we afford to remain in a state of complacency and comfort?   In this episode, I'm joined by entrepreneur, accomplished fitness advocate, author, and a veteran Marine Raider, Nick Koumalatsos. We talk about why the difficult path is the one we should take. We also talk about his journey to success and how success doesn't come quick.   We have a systemic problem in this country where men are not leading their communities and families the way they need to be. -Nick Koumalatsos   Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode    -Why men self-sabotage The reason so many men self-sabotage and fail to reach their full potential is past trauma. How do we work through this?   -The importance of taking care of yourself Taking care of everyone else but yourself is actually selfish. How do we fill our own cups before pouring out into others?   -The battle against corporations Why do we need to be careful of companies and corporations selling the disease and cure at the same time?   Guest Bio:   Nick Koumalatsos is a versatile entrepreneur, accomplished fitness advocate, author, and a veteran Marine Raider. With a background that spans both military and business landscapes, he has made significant strides in various entrepreneurial fields.   Nick is the co-founder of Johnny Slicks, a brand renowned for its high-quality, organic grooming products for men. His advocacy for personal grooming and self-care reflects the company's commitment to providing premium products and promoting healthy, sustainable lifestyles.   As an author, Nick wrote "Excommunicated Warrior: 7 Stages of Transition," an insightful book that provides guidance on overcoming personal challenges. His own experiences and resilience inspire his written work, offering readers a practical roadmap for navigating change and adversity.   Nick Koumalatsos' multifaceted career makes him a standout figure in the entrepreneurial landscape.
