President Trump is expected to issue an executive order focused on crime and homeless encampments in the District. Some fear this could be a first step toward the White House stripping away the District's ability to govern itself. D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson joined the show to weigh in. Plus, we asked Mendelson's thoughts on the long-term future of the RFK Stadium site. The question of using taxpayer dollars to subsidize the construction of a multi-billion dollar stadium is expected to be a major sticking point in the conversation. At Thursday's community meeting in Ward seven, D-C Mayor Muriel Bowser alluded to the possibility of the city spending money to sweeten the deal for the team.Mendelson disagrees with using public money andited his long standing view on the issue. “I think there are a lot of advantages to a stadium. But we also know from research in city after city after city… public dollars don't have that return,” he said. The stadium would likely anchor a larger development including a sports and entertainment complex, retail, and housing.A Virginia House subcommittee this week tabled the much-discussed Fairfax County casino bill. Does this mean the effort to bring a casino and entertainment complex to Tysons has gone bust? We asked WAMU's Northern Virginia reporter Margaret Barthel. And what's the future of the Virginia Democratic Party now that Susan Swecker is stepping down after a decade at the helm?Maryland is one of the states suing the Trump administration over recent executive actions, from ending birthright citizenship to granting Elon Musk access to sensitive Treasury Department data. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown joined Kojo and Tom to break down the legal strategy and why it is necessary. “Elon Musk is in the central payment system. Maryland gets eleven billion dollars through that system and Marylanders get fifty-one billion,” Brown said. “So, the 1.5 million to protect Marylanders and defend the interest of the state are well worth it.” Become a member of WAMU: wamu.org/donateSend us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885

More than 20 million Americans are behind on their medical bills. Today, reflections on the war in the Middle East from an American physician who spent a month at a hospital in Gaza, and a Marylander who grew up in Ramallah, on the West Bank. Dr. Victoria Aveson is a surgeon from New York, who went to Gaza under the auspices of Humanity Auxilium, a nonprofit that sends volunteers to help in areas ravaged by wars and natural disasters. Aveson shares what she saw from inside one of the last medical centers standing in the Gaza Strip. Then, Dr. Ramsey Hanhan is an Palestinian American author who lives in Howard County. Millions of people around the country have already cast a ballot in this year's election. With competitive races for President and for U.S. Senate, Maryland voters are expected to turnout in high numbers. The 2020 election, which put President Joe Biden into office, saw 66% participation. Two years later, in the 2022 midterms, only 46% of eligible voters cast ballots. But besides low turnout, recent election suffered from a lack of poll workers. And with early voting in Maryland beginning in 10 days, election officials are continuing to call for more residents to get involved in the election process. Marylanders working to ensure a secure and fair election join Midday today. They are organizing to get as many people as possible to cast votes, and they are getting young people involved in the electoral process. Jared DeMarinis is Maryland's State Administrator of Elections. We ask him about overseeing the state's election at a time of heightened paranoia and fearmongering around electoral integrity. Then, we talk to Sam Novey, Co-Founder of Baltimore Votes Coalition. He is working to get more people involved in the election process, including young people. High school students Aleni Lila and James McLaughlin are new election judges participating in the upcoming election. Maryland residents can register to vote at the polls during early voting and on Election Day. On the Midday Newswrap today, we are joined by Rachel Baye, WYPR reporter and editor. She covered the nearly $150 million dollar budget cut announced by Gov. Wes Moore last week and approved by the Board of Estimates on Wednesday. Moore, the chair of the three-member Board of Public Works that approved the cuts for the current year's budget, said the changes are designed to prioritize health care and child care spending. “We know that when Marylanders have access to health care and also access to preventative care, and when families have access to affordable childcare, they are more likely to participate in our labor force and participate in our economy,” Moore said. “And the key is we've got to have an economy where more people can participate.”Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

Gov. Wes Moore pardoned 175,000 cannabis-related misdemeanor convictions on Monday. Among the pardoned convictions, WYPR's Rachel Bay reported, more than 150,000 were for cannabis possession, and more than 18,000 for use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia. Baye joins Midday to discuss the sweeping move, and what it means for thousands of Marylanders with low-level convictions on their record.Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.
Five years ago, almost to the exact day, Wes Moore came on a new upstart podcast and talked about what made him angry. Specifically, he talked about marijuana laws and how they disproportionately impacted communities of color. These laws ruined a lot of people's lives over the years. And they made a lot of people angry. But Wes stepped up. Since he was elected as The Governor of Maryland last year, he's put his money where his mouth was and he pushed it through. And now more than 175,000 Marylanders have had their criminal records expunged by his Executive Action. It's an amazing example of his commitment and follow through and why your host Paul Rieckhoff frequently refers to Maryland's Governor as potentially our future President. And in this throwback episode, you're going to hear exactly why. Your host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) rips into all of it in this all new episode of Independent Americans. From Putin visiting North Korea, to Juneteenth, to RFK failing to qualify for the debates, there's a lot happening. School might be out for the summer, but the news is just heating up.
