Laurel Orley is the founder and CEO of Daily Crunch Snacks and a mission-driven entrepreneur with a background in advertising. After more than a decade building major brands like Dove at Unilever, she transitioned to launch her own company focused on health, flavor, and impact.Daily Crunch Snacks is a women-owned snack brand offering sprouted, air-dried almonds and other nut blends with bold, innovative flavors. Rooted in a family recipe and a mission to support mental health, the brand emphasizes clean ingredients, sustainability, and crave-worthy crunch.Laurel launched Daily Crunch with her aunt Diane, who developed the unique sprouting process after studying brain health in India. The brand debuted in March 2020—days before the COVID-19 shutdown—and adapted its launch strategy for a digital-first world.Daily Crunch has since expanded into 6,000+ stores and was named the 13th fastest-growing food and beverage company by Inc.Laurel is a board member of the Upcycled Food Association and a member of EY's Entrepreneurial Winning Women Class of 2024.The brand's mental health mission is personal: Laurel's cousin lost his life to bipolar disorder, inspiring her family to create The Support Network, which Daily Crunch supports financially and publicly.Laurel's experience on Dove's Real Beauty campaign taught her the power of mission-driven marketing and authenticity. The sprouting process transforms the texture of almonds, making them crisp and chip-like while improving digestibility.Product innovation stems from a blend of trend reports, consumer feedback, and Laurel's own flavor instincts—like turmeric & sea salt or Nashville Hot.Collaborations, like their Fly By Jing partnership, are a strategic focus for driving awareness and reaching new audiences.Upcycling ingredients—such as pickle ends from Cleveland Kitchen—helps reduce waste and differentiate flavor profiles.Daily Crunch doesn't lead with its mission, but invites consumers to discover its mental health advocacy as they dig deeper into the brand. QUOTES “I wanted to launch a brand with a mission that I believed in. Our mission is actually mental health awareness.” (Laurel)“Soaking nuts removes phytic acid, an anti-nutrient, making them more bioavailable, easier to digest and more nutrient dense.” (Laurel)“The crunch is what gets people in. It's lighter, airier, crunchier. Honestly, it's like a chip.” (Laurel)“You're always going to have setbacks. My motto is always two steps forward, one step back.” (Laurel)“We had to throw out 20,000 pounds of almonds and I didn't have the right insurance for it. I almost threw in the towel.” (Laurel)“There's a fine balance between mental and physical health. It all ladders back up to brain health.” (Laurel)“When you see someone in the wild buying your product, it's the best feeling. I was hiding behind a pillar at the airport.” (Laurel)“The savory-sweet combo is really resonating right now. Our last two launches were savory, but you can definitely do both.” (Laurel)

Nashville is home of hot chicken, and tonight, it brought us some hot garbage but not a bad show. We start off with an AJ Promo, Match and (what we believe) an injury angle. Then the fun starts. Chelsea Green and Michin in a Dumpster Match was fantastic. The backstage segments after were even better. The Bailey and Nia segment has us wanting more Tiffy Time. Naomi and Tiffy had a great match, but not the ending we want. Finally the ladder match was amazing. This is the best SmackDown of 2024. Check us out at SmackDaddies.ca or on the Huge Pop Network! Houston, we have *Hot Chicken*? Well technically, they may have a flavor called “Houston we have a Problem”, but we see no problems here! This week, we're visiting a fresh face to the Nashville Hot Chicken Community, with a dash of Shawarma! Nashville Hot Chicken & Gyro is a new fresh face where the Pita Pocket previously used to reign. It's located on the Hendersonville “Johnny Cash Parkway” area, and towards the entrance to the highly trafficked areas of Hendersonville! Alex found this “Late Bird North” after a songwriter round in Nashville for Ms. Debi Champion's set at the Commodore Grill. With the help of some of Hendersonville's finest officers, he ordered the Hot Chicken Dirty Fries and never looked back! “But Fellas… how can it be Hot Chicken if you have GYROs and Shawarma too?!” Well if you want to find out, grab yourself some Nashville Hot Loaded Fries, and maybe a Lamb Shawarma plate… And check out this week's episode of The HOT CHIX Podcast! Monica Rothgery, former COO of KFC US, part of Yum Brands, shares inspiring lessons about excellence along with surprising insights into fast food kitchens. Monica's recent book, "Lessons from the Drive-Thru: Real Life Wisdom for Frontline Leaders" goes beyond optimal team management practices and provides great advice for everyone who is pursuing excellence in their lives. A great tip to attract and retain loyal employees and to create an environment where team members feel valued is to invest both monetary and relationship capital. Engagement is essential. Take the time to learn about your team members and always show respect. The team members impact the customer experience. Monica's advice to optimize customer service is to not overreact or take things personally. She taught her team members to respond to a frustrated customer by saying: "That shouldn't have happened. Let me fix it for you." That validating response can help diffuse emotions. Her customer service tip can be applied in many home or business life situations. She emphasized that frontline management greatly impacts people, not only the team members but also the customers. Many first jobs are at fast food restaurants. Management needs to realize that they have the power to positively change lives. You may be surprised to learn about the time and effort KFC and Yum Brands take to innovate new flavors and offerings. The Food Innovation Team even studies trends in fine dining as part of their innovation and creation approach. Chicken and Waffles and Nashville Hot are examples of this practice. Bottom line, Monica encourages everyone to increase the top line of life, i.e. finding and doing the things that bring joy. She recommends writing down what depletes you and what brings you joy and fulfillment and to focus always on the joy. Monica reminds us that abundance follows joy. Savor the day! Nashville HOT chicken and who burned down the boat!!! Nobody truly enjoys making mistakes. We ALL make mistakes, period, end of sentence. This is the simple honest truth. Mistakes happen, for some of us more often than we prefer, but they happen. It is not really about the mistake it is about what you do afterwards that truly matters. Did you know that mistakes are how we as human beings learn? Have you ever heard of the term "trial and error"? Unfortunately, because of the shame and beliefs we attach to making mistakes in the first place we often fail to learn what is necessary to grow and change. Which, ironically sets us up to make the mistake again. Join Calvin as he unpacks the struggles we often face embracing our mistakes as opportunities and not a declaration of self value.
This was honestly the best fish sandwich I've ever eaten. Using a slightly modified take on the now-classic Nashville Hot Chicken recipe, I subbed in pike fillets (tasty and tender, yet firm), and put it all on a bun. I used sorrel instead of lettuce because I like the way the tartness cuts through the richness of the fried fish and sauce, much like the lemon or vinegar you get with fish and chips, but you can use regular iceberg or romaine lettuce instead. This isn't a healthy recipe by any means, so make it a treat and go all in for the heavy oily goodness of the hot sauce that the fried pike gets smothered in! Read the written version of this recipe Rate this Podcast Listen to our other podcasts here Buy us a cup of coffee to say thanks for the great work About Adam Berkelmans: Adam Berkelmans, also known as The Intrepid Eater, is a passionate ambassador for real food and a proponent of nose to tail eating. In today's show, we're going to give you a look into what we eat and share some examples of our favorite meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Our usual breakfast recipes include rice cake, American Dream nut butter, Kodiak protein pancakes, or Dave's Killer Bread. We also like to cook chaffle in batches and put them in a fridge. It's a good way to prep your meal, so if you feel too lazy to cook in the morning, simply toss one into the toaster. Oatmeal prep option #1: Mix with stevia, flaxseed, germ coconut and top them with pineapple and coconut flakes, or cinnamon and sugar. Oatmeal prep option #2: Mix it with a scoop of chocolate protein powder and 1-2 tablespoons of American Dream nut butter. That way, you're getting your carbs, your protein, and some fat. The Dough Bar protein donuts are perfect for breakfast too! Lunch options: Grilled cheese sandwich, Quest spicy chili chips, and Ole Xtreme Wellness High Fiber tortillas with G Hughes Sugar-Free BBQ Sauce, with shredded chicken and top it with some jalapenos Making a pita pizza: Top it with marinara sauce, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, any of your normal pizza toppings. Happy International Podcast Day!!! Matt, Tom, and Ez tackle the Nashville Hot vs Georgia Gold challenge!!! Was it finger lickin good? Which do you prefer?
Pretty much everyone agrees that fried chicken is delicious. It doesn't matter where you're from; the combination of crispy skin and juicy meat, sometimes doused in hot sauce and served with pickles is a true Southern delicacy that is hard to resist. But what are the origins of this dish, and more importantly, why have cooks all over the U.S. started opening fried chicken joints? On this week's episode, four very different views on fried chicken, through the lens of different regions in America. We'll dredge up some history, then take a deep-fried dive into what makes the perfect platter. Paul Fehribach is the chef and owner of Big Jones in Chicago, a restaurant dedicated to preserving the traditional Southern foodways; he's probably as close to what John T. Edge's Southern Foodways Alliance would consider legitimate, mainly because he's both a historian and preservationist, when it comes to cooking Southern food in Chicago. Then, Jared Leonard, the chef and owner of The Budlong, where they specialize in Nashville Hot chicken joins us in-studio. And on to Memphis style at Gus'. They now have several franchises outside of their native location, including one here in Chicago which Zach Goodman owns. And finally we head to North Carolina courtesy of Joe Scruggs. He's the guy who started out with a food truck, called Roost Carolina Kitchen, and eventually opened a restaurant of the same name. He now has two locations in Chicago, and in Steve's opinion, makes some of the city's best fried bird.
