Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and illness. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.   11. But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.'      15.  Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”      16.  So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.  17.  When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”       18.  “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father's family have."      30.  Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.  31.  Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”  32.  With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed.  33.  He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”       34.  “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.       “Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time.  35.  The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.       36.  At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37.  Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”       38.  Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.       39.  When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! Which is easier: to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Get up and walk”? I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.' So he said to the paralysed man, ‘Get up, take your mat and go home.' Then the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man. As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. ‘Follow me,' he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?' On hearing this, Jesus said, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but those who are ill. But go and learn what this means: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.' Then John's disciples came and asked him, ‘How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?' (Matthew 9.5-14, NIV)

He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. 5 He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross. 6 He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?” Then he led me back to the bank of the river. 7 When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river. 8 He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh. 9 Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.

Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”       8.  “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.'”       9.  “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?  10.  As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.   11. But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.'      15.  Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”      16.  So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.  17.  When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”       18.  “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father's family have. You have abandoned the Lord's commands and have followed the Baals.      30.  Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.  31.  Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”  32.  With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed.  33.  He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”       34.  “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.       “Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time.  35.  The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.       36.  At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37.  Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”       38.  Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.       39.  When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (09/01/25), Hank wishes all of you a happy Labor Day and details the Labor Day holiday that God gave us long before the government did—our Sabbath Day rest. Just as we rest today on Labor Day, the Lord commands us to rest on the Sabbath each week. “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do” (Deut. 5:13-14 NIV). So our Labor Day holiday according to God is our Sabbath Day rest, which begs the question: why do Christians rest from their labor on the first day of the week (Sunday), rather than the last day of the week (Saturday)? The answer, says Hank, is encapsulated in just one word—resurrection. Hank also discusses something else that comes to his mind when he thinks about the word labor, and that is what Paul says in 1 Corinthians chapter 3, that each person will be rewarded according to their own labor. In other words, what we do now in this life counts for all eternity. Hank uses the illustration of his invitation to play Cypress Point, which he claims to be the most spectacular golf course on Earth. For months, he beat his body into submission while dreaming of the day he would experience walking its fairways. Without his strenuous preparations, he would have still experienced the same breathtaking views; however, all his hard work added immeasurably to his experience. That is what heaven will be like. As phenomenal as Cypress Point is, it pales in comparison to what paradise restored will be. Hank spent one day at a golf haven; he will spend an eternity in God's heaven. It stands to reason, therefore, that he would put a lot more labor into preparing for an eternity in heaven with God than he did for playing eighteen holes of golf.

I remember it like yesterday: Professor Joe Master was the most intimidating instructor I ever encountered during my accounting degree. He'd call on you, and you'd better be ready. At one point, for six weeks, I was sicker than a dog. With temperatures over 102 (and eventually discovering I had pneumonia), I went to class every week, dreading whether Mr. Master would get me up in front of the class to answer a tough question. Then this professor did something unexpected: He never called on me once. He showed me compassion when I needed it most. Life has a way of bringing us to desperate places where we question if God cares about our pain or our struggle. Writing about this kind of grief and pain, the weeping prophet Jeremiah makes a declaration that you need to hear today: “Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22–23, NIV). When you're at the end of your rope and maybe even at the end of your hope, remember this truth: Your God is the God of compassion.

Johnny Glover (Pastor of Worship), "Saving Faith".          13.  On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.  14.  One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message.  15.  When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.          25.  About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.  26.  Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose.  27.  The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.  28.  But Paul shouted, “Don't harm yourself! We are all here!”          29.  The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.  30.  He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”          31.  They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”  32.  Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.  33.  At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.  34.  The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.          35.  When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: “Release those men.”  36.  The jailer told Paul, “The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.”          37.  But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”          38.  The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.  39.  They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.    40.  After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. "Doesn't God want Dad to be healed?"Mom took Marilyn's hand in her own, and Marilyn leaned into the warm touch in the otherwise cold and bare room. "God loves us and your dad so much, Marilyn--more than we could ever comprehend. He doesn't want us to be sick or suffer. God is good, and He hates our pain, but He allows it in our lives for reasons we don't fully understand.""I hate it too." Marilyn glanced at Dad again as he slept.Mom squeezed her hand. "Every day I ask God, 'Why is there sickness?'" Marilyn felt assured knowing Mom asked the same big questions she did. "The world isn't supposed to be this way," Mom said. "Even though we humans messed it up with our sin, God is at work every single day to make it whole again. That work is called restoration.""And He's doing this now?" Mom nodded. "It started in the first book of the Bible when God promised to bless His people and guide them when they were lost. Then Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again so our relationship with God could be restored. Jesus also healed and fed people, giving us a glimpse of God's plan for eternal restoration. Today I see His restoration in the gifts He's given people and the ways they use them to help others--like the doctors caring for your dad. And one day, God promises to bring complete and total restoration. There will be no more sickness and no more death forever."Dad stirred in his bed as Marilyn asked, "But what about today?""Today I hold on to that hope knowing that God is with me, you, and Dad," Mom said.Marilyn smiled at Dad as he slowly opened his eyes. “One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.” (Luke 18:1 NLT) Even if prayer were a difficult thing to do, which it is not, or an unpleasant thing to do, which it is not, we still would have every reason to pray because we are commanded in Scripture to do so. The apostle Paul wrote, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7 NLT). And Luke 18:1 tells us that Jesus used a story to show His followers “that they should always pray and never give up” (Luke 18:1 NLT). Prayer is God’s appointed way for us to obtain things. This doesn’t mean that God is like some big Santa in Heaven. He’s not standing by, ready to grant our every wish. Prayer concerns something much more important: our needs. God invites us to take our every need to Him. We see it in Paul’s words in Philippians 4. We see it in David’s psalms. We see it in Jesus’ alone time with His Father. We see it in the lives of countless Bible characters. Whatever was on their minds, whatever was in their path, whatever was impacting their lives, God wanted them to involve Him in it. Jesus said, “Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need” (Matthew 6:9–11 NLT). If you need it, God wants you to tell Him about it. Do you have needs right now? Pray about it. Do you need His provision? Pray about it. Do you need His healing touch? Pray about it. Go to God with your requests, and your heavenly Father, who knows you need these things, will hear you. James wrote, “You do not have because you do not ask God” (James 4:2 NIV). Think about that. You might ask, “Why is it that I never know what the will of God is for my life?” Answer: You do not have because you do not ask God. You might ask, “Why is it that I never have the opportunity to lead people to the Lord?” Answer: You do not have because you do not ask God. You might ask, “Why don’t I feel more confident when I face spiritual battles?” Answer: You do not have because you do not ask God. I wonder how many answers to prayer would be waiting for us if we were to just pray about things. What would happen if we just said, “Lord, I’ve never actually brought this before You, but I’m praying about it now.” The worst-case scenario is that God will say no. But what if God says yes?
