Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:1-7; Hebrews 13:15-16As Dr. Jensen talked about his work as a missionary, Nolan wondered what it would be like to move to a different country to serve God. Dr. Jensen described it as God giving him such a deep love for the people in that country that he had to move there, but Nolan doubted he'd ever be able to make such a big sacrifice, even if God wanted him to.Nolan listened intently as Dr. Jensen told a story about fixing a truck with the help of his sixteen-year-old son, Joel. "We didn't have the right tools, and Joel came up with one crazy idea after another. Just when we were about to give up, the engine roared to life! We praised God right then and there."On the way home from church, Nolan brought up the truck story. "It's too bad they don't have better tools to work with, isn't it?" He grinned at his dad. "You should have been there, Dad. You have tools to fix just about anything!"Over the next few days, Nolan often thought about Dr. Jensen's lack of tools. The more he thought about it, the more he wanted to do something to help. I have some money saved up I could use, he thought. But then I won't have money for a new bike. Nolan tried to forget it, but he couldn't, so he decided to talk to his dad about it. "Dad, do you think God wants me to buy tools for the missionaries with my bike money? Could I get what they need with the amount I have?" "That's a great idea, Nolan. I can get tools at discount prices." Dad beamed. "I think the Holy Spirit is helping you love others like Jesus by putting their needs before your own desires."Nolan nodded. "Getting a new bike can wait." As he spoke, Nolan realized he was ready to make a sacrifice to help the missionaries. It's not as big as moving to a foreign country, he thought. But I think I'm beginning to understand how God can make you care about someone enough that you're willing to make sacrifices for them. It's like what Jesus did on the cross for me! Jeannine received in MA from Bethel Seminary, Saint Paul, MN. and her PhD from Luther seminary, Saint Paul, MN. Dr. Brown has taught at Bethel Seminary for over 20 years. She teaches in the areas of New Testament, Greek, hermeneutics, and integration.    Dr. Brown has focused much of her research and writing on the Gospels, hermeneutics, and interdisciplinary integration. In addition to a book on biblical hermeneutics (Scripture as Communication, now in second edition) and two books on integration, she has published three commentaries on Matthew's Gospel and one on Philippians (Tyndale NT series). She is a member of the NIV translation team and is an editor for the NIV Study Bible, revised edition (2020). Her current writing projects include a commentary 1 Peter (NICNT) and book on themes in 1 Peter. Jeannine's other published works include: Scripture as Communication (2021, 2007); The Gospels as Stories (2020); Relational Integration of Psychology and Christian Theology (2018); Becoming Whole and Holy: An Integrative Conversation about Christian Formation (2011); Embedded Genres in the New Testament: Understanding Their Impact for Interpretation and three commentaries on the Gospel of Matthew (2018, 2015, 2012). Jeannine Brown co-edited the second edition of Jesus and the Gospels (2013). Jeannine thoroughly enjoys teaching in churches and ministries on the topics of Bible interpretation and the New Testament. She is married to Tim Brown, singer-songwriter, and has two adult daughters.  Story Notes  Today's podcast focused on 1 Pet 3:1–7. In the NIV it reads:  "Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers."   Exploring the cultural background, Jeannine suggests that Peter is calling Christians to display behaviors that reflect Christ even as male dominance was a given. Jeannine explained that in the first century, Roman interest in well-organized households should mirror a well-organized Rome. Roman citizens were to live harmoniously within a well-organized Roman household. Where the passage makes a surprising move is in the call for husbands to have empathy for their wives with a consequence: that God will hear their prayers. Further Christian wives should view themselves beyond the cultural standard of female beauty. As the passage states: it's not the adorning of women's outer selves but their inner lives of faith in God. Doing right, and with faith that does not give into fear given God is ultimately in control. This passage is countercultural in its emphasis on Christian faith and the development of a peaceful inner life both of which acknowledge God's supremacy versus that of emperor's.     This passage calls both husbands and wives to do what is right: to be brave, to have faith in God who rules over all of Rome's emperors, verse 7, to live within a culture with very differing values that offend Christian moral life. In this passage there is a tension in negotiating life lived in a culture at odds with Christian values, supremely concerning the divinity Jesus, or that of an emperor. While Jesus died on a Roman cross, even so, the passage evokes faith and courage in Christian households. The passage is helpful to missionaries in similar circumstances. How to live with courage and faith, elevating the gospel with behavior more often than words in a culture that exploited slaves and women.     Turning to 1 Peter 3:7 that reads:  "Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers."     The Petrine texts lean into sibling language, especially that of children, which overall is very egalitarian in the cultural context of first century. Further, the language of “father” was not very much present in NT as it was in 1st century non-Christian texts. God's children in Christ were to face each other in humility and this very egalitarian impulse in relating to one another. God is father, but in Christ we're all siblings. Women and men are co-heirs is throughout NT. Leadership structure are notes but not ones in the NT.     The whole Petrine text is a significant challenge to the top-down rule from emperor as God down throughout the household structure which was central. Given what Peter is doing with family metaphors—of believers as children / siblings who are to love earnestly as family love each other, and as the elders are a group too much have wisdom but must lead by example. These impulses, leader on top, and wife below: this does simplify decisions, but this is not the texture of Peter. As he thinks of his context, and the household code, it is not a prescription but a triage—a pathway for healing top-down leadership. It's what Christians do in an emergency. Emergency advice to the Christian community so it can survive. It's about survival for the most vulnerable. The thrust of text is a call to attentiveness to the most vulnerable. In light of Tom Holland's book—Dominion: How the Christian Revolution Remade the World—in brutal detail reveals the cruelty of Rome. In thinking of our next, the advice is that even if you suffer for doing good, you are blessed. And take comfort in that truth and knowledge that even those who slanders you, remain loyal to Christ, if you suffer as Jesus did, you will also share in his glory.  In fascinating detail, Jeannine describes the history of Bible translation and the canonical review that follows. For the NIV team, on which she contributes, their voting policy requires a 75% majority in approving translation choices. Thus, the team must make a compelling case to change something, so for 1 Peter, and the NT generally, it's always wise to examine and read many translations to see differences.     In considering the backdrop in which the text arises, submission is not a new requirement. What is new for this culture is to ask that all behavior must be Christ-like. While believers are clearly frightened by opposition to Christian faith, the text calls them to act in ways that others will recognize their soul-allegiance to Christ. Win others over to Christ not out of fear but confident behavior that imitates Christ's live. Jeannine recommends entering the text with a disciplined imagination that brings implications of texts to life then and now. AUG. 15, 2025God's footprints."Your footprints were not seen." Ps. 77:19 NIVThe psalmist wrote, "Your path led through... mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen" (v. 19 NIV). When you can't see God's "footprints," He is calling you to walk by faith, not by sight (See 2Co 5:7). Joni Eareckson Tada wrote: "A few months from now, I'll mark an anniversary that is a heartbreaking story of loss and an incomparable testimony of God's faithfulness...l will have been in a wheelchair for 47 years... barely a heartbeat in history, and as nothing compared with eternity. But for a flesh-and-blood, earth-dwelling human being, 47 years is a long time. Anyone who suffers...[wants] assurance that somehow, someway, things will work out in the end. We want to know that God is at the center of our suffering. In Romans 8 we have...that assurance: 'For those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose' (v. 28 ESV) … [God] is so supremely in charge of the world that everything touching our lives...is ordered in such a way that it serves our good. This is true whether we face cancer, broken relationships, job loss, bankruptcy...or even a broken neck at age 17. The strong hope of the believer is not that we will escape 'bad things'... but that God will transform our hardships into an instrument of his mercy to do us good...Romans 8:29 reveals [our] sufferings are small and short...compared with the weight of glory they are accruing for [us] in heaven. So bear with heartbreak and hardship a bit longer. Episode Summary: When God plants a dream in your heart, the journey to seeing it fulfilled can be filled with challenges and delays. In this Sacred Scar Story, Grace Fox shares how she held onto the calling God gave her through years when opportunities seemed out of reach. She opens up about the lessons learned in the waiting, the perseverance it built, and the deep assurance that God’s timing is always perfect. If He has given you a dream, this conversation will encourage you to trust Him to bring it to pass. Quotables from the episode: My husband and I worked at a year-round Christian camp for eleven years, and God had made that abundantly clear that we were supposed to be there. The director of that camp seemed to struggle with women who demonstrated leadership qualities. That was where I wrote my first three or four books, and I was a speaker but this director didn’t give me any opportunity to use these gifts. I had so much shame because others noticed that I was a speaker and yet wasn’t being given the opportunity, and when they would ask why I wasn’t being used right there where I worked, I had no answers for that. I lived with a deep sadness within my heart. I lived with a sense of rejection, and a sense of “what’s wrong with me? There must be something wrong with me.” Because I didn’t have the opportunity to practice the gifts that I thought God had given me, I began to question if I misheard God. It was almost like Jesus not being able to heal in his own hometown. One morning during my quiet time, I prayed, “If this is of you, then will you do something with it? Will you use it? But if this is not of you, take away the desire because I don’t want to spend any more energy or negative emotions on this, wishing I could do this but not having the opportunity.” At 7:00 that morning, I received a call from a woman about 40 miles away asking me to speak at her women’s event. It was like God saying, “Grace, I heard your cry. I see you in your pain and I just want to assure you, it’s not all in your head. You do have this gifting, and I’m going to bring it about in my time.” And He did, eventually. All of a sudden, doors started opening for speaking engagements. So, I began flying out of there to speak to groups who invited me to come when I wasn’t being asked to speak in my own place. During that time, while I was waiting for that to come about, I cleaned a lot of toilets, scrubbed a lot of pots and pans, and baked a lot of birthday cakes for kids who came to camp or counselors that were there during the spring and summer. I really developed a lot of humility during that time and patience in waiting for God to bring my dream to fulfillment. When the camp director left and another director assumed the position, who had been on staff longer than we had been there, he approached me and said, “Grace, I need a speaker for a women’s event coming up and I think you’ve waited long enough. Will you do it?” There have been a couple other camp directors since then, since we left, and they have all invited me back to speak at my old stomping grounds. I learned from that that if God plants a dream in your heart, you need to not rush ahead, trust in God’s timing because he will bring it to pass but there is a lot to learn in the journey to getting there. I think God needed me to learn perseverance because what I do now requires perseverance too. I can’t do this in my own strength. I don’t want to try to do this in my own strength—it’s done in His strength. It’s also given me an empathy for other women who are younger than myself, but they also feel like God has put a dream in their heart but wonder why it isn’t happening. I get to share with them, “Be patient. Don’t give up. Because if God is in this, He will bring it to pass. It’s the lessons learned along the way that really matter. It’s the character we learn in those hard places.” If God is in it, don’t quit until He says so! Persevere and learn what you can along the way. Colossians 4 (NIV)

Are you ready for the rain? There was only one way to be ready for the Flood, and that was to get in the Ark. Practicing your swimming "just in case" wasn't going to save anyone. It was the Ark, or death. And the only reason you'd get in that odorous Ark would be if you believed that judgment was coming. Today, as in the days of Noah, there are a few who believe that judgment is coming, and a great multitude who are "living for the weekend" - just like Jesus told us in Matthew 24. “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT) While reading his morning newspaper, a man was shocked to find his name listed in the obituary column. He called the newspaper office, outraged that the editor had made such a mistake. “This is terrible!” he screamed. “How could you do this to me?” The explanation he got didn’t satisfy the man, so he stormed down to the office and demanded to see the editor. After being yelled at for several minutes, the editor grew frustrated and said, “Look, buddy, cheer up. I’ll put your name in the birth column tomorrow, and you can have a fresh start.” How many people would jump at the opportunity for a fresh start—a chance to wipe away the past (or, at least, parts of it) and begin again? If you fall into that category, I’ve got some incredible news for you. That’s exactly what the Lord offers. Look at the apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 5:17: “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (NLT). Winston Churchill said, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Many of us can see the truth of those words when we look back at our own lives. We see destructive patterns and decisions repeated again and again. But as Paul pointed out, Jesus frees us from those destructive cycles. If we give our lives to Him, we’re no longer slaves to our old sinful urges and impulses. The idea of a fresh start may sound too good to be true. Some people have a hard time moving forward as new creations because of lingering guilt or complications regarding their past. Those are weapons the devil uses in his warfare against believers. But God says in Isaiah 43:18–19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (NIV). A fresh start doesn’t mean a trouble-free life. Jesus said, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NLT). Even our trials and sorrows are temporary, part of the seasons of life. Ecclesiastes 3:1–4 says, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance” (NLT). Every season brings a fresh start. Winter may seem endless, but eventually the bleak skies and bitter cold give way to green landscapes and new life. If you’re struggling in your season of life right now, don’t give up. Draw close to God. Pray. Study His Word. And remember: A new season is on its way. A fresh start is just around the corner. Wisely, my parents had me wait a year after high school before entering college. I needed that extra year to mature and earn additional money. By God's grace and planning, it also allowed me to meet Paula in her first year; otherwise, God would have had to work out our meeting in another way. I remember when I was on my way out, heading to college for the first time, I knew that I would be on my own for the rest of my life. My parents did all they could to raise me right, to instill in me solid values, words of wisdom, and examples to follow. When I had to cross the threshold of the house that marked the moment of my transition from dependent child to independent adult, my parents knew that they had taught me the best they knew how, and now the decisions to continue walking in that knowledge were up to me.I may have been on my own physically, at least for a season—until I began to build my own family and emulate the wisdom and lessons my parents had taught me. But I wasn't on my own spiritually. The words and examples of my parents were always there, becoming increasingly relevant and meaningful as I faced my own real-life situations. As I continued to mature as an adult, I can't remember how many times the words of my mom or dad came back to me, and I thought, “That's what they meant!” They also left me a priceless spiritual legacy, introducing me to the Lord Jesus, a respect for God's Word, and a love for others, especially fellow believers.I imagine something similar happened with Jesus' original disciples. They continued to mature in their understanding of the faith after the Lord Jesus pushed His disciples out of the nest and sent...

Have we just stuck Jesus onto our old lives? When we look at the Apostle Paul's life, we see purpose. We see a plan. And his plan didn't always turn out to be God's plan, so that's reassuring. Through the years God has seen fit to give me many songs and there's a story behind each and everyone of them. This week's song is no different. The song is called The Source and it can found on my recording Forty Days & Forty Nights - Songs of Contemplation and Intimacy, Volume One. This particular song came on May 8, 2010, which happened to be day six of a 40 Day Fast I was doing as a means of cleansing my soul, mind, and body in order to draw closer to Jesus. That means of helping me keep my eyes and mind focused on Jesus, I was meditating daily on Psalm 40 and on Isaiah 40. This song came as I meditated on Psalm 40 verse three part a which says, “Many will see and fear And will trust in the LORD.” In those days I was still traveling and ministering around the world quite a bit and honestly felt a bit overwhelmed and out of control of my life. It seems like my life was well ordered and very much in sync with the Lord, but reality was that I had many things I was clinging to which the Lord wanted me to release to him. Some of the hardest things to release in my life involved my children. Basically, I was having to learn to let them go and release them to begin their own adult journeys without me trying to control or manipulate them in anyway regarding the choices they would need to make on their own. On another level, the political climate of those days was becoming quite hostile toward me which, in turn, worked against me feeling free enough and safe enough to share my story of deliverance from same-sex attraction. Even though I knew God was the source of my strength, I begin to recognize during the fast that there were still areas of fear that I needed to deal with. I desperately needed to strip away all the fear from every area of my life and I did this by reminding myself that God loves me with the passion and intensity of 100 million stars and that he is the absolute source of everything good in my life. He spoke the universe into existence. He set every star, every galaxy, and every planet in just the exact place in the gravitational force to sustain life. Quite simply, I truly needed to see him as my all in all. The Lord reminded me that he would be with me every step of the way through this journey we call life. He reminded me that I was never and had never ever been alone. He reminded me I was not here to be served but that I was here to lay down my life as a servant to those around me. He reminded me that even if I lost my life due to my faith, there would be no big change because I would still be with him. The bottom line was becoming quite evident to me. I needed to see Jesus Christ as the source, as the only one who could truly meet my deepest needs. And let's take the next five minutes and simply acknowledge the fact that Jesus Christ is the source of everything we all need. He is here. Let's acknowledge that truth whether we feel anything or not. Let's plug into out Source right now. Ready? SONG Regardless of our circumstances, regardless of the countless hurts and wounds we receive throughout this journey we call life, and regardless of what anyone else thinks about our faith in Jesus, our God is the ultimate source and he is ultimately in control…especially when our lives seem to be spinning out of control. I have Parkinson's and I hate it, but I believe my God is able to use it for my good and for his glory - and that is enough for me. My personal goal is to just simply stay connected to him each and every moment of each and every day. John 15:4-9 in the NIV has become very dear to me due to my health issues. In these verses, Jesus says it so clearly and I take it so personally: 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.' No matter what, I must remain connected to Him. I must - WE must - remain in His love. Younger men are more likely to become Christians than younger women. Is this another national spiritual awakening? I hope and pray it is. Gen Z has the highest suicide rate of any generation. The only hope for this generation is Jesus and, for that matter, any generation. #1 In the US we have had four great spiritual awakenings.The first one happened in America before we were a nation in 1740. George Whitfield’s preaching drew massive crowds. The first Great Awakening didn’t just change hearts, it helped shape the moral DNA of the United States. America is exceptional. America is unique.America has been established by God. George Washington was quick to give credit to God for his success on the battlefield. #2 The second Great Awakening occurred during 1790s to 1840s and was led by many, including Charles Finney. #3 The third Great Awakening in America was from about 1857–1859.This revival began when a 48-year-old businessman namedJeremiah Lanphier began a prayer meeting on Fulton Street in New York City. “Revival is the rekindling of a flame, and when the fire is lit,it doesn’t just warm the church—it lights up the world!” —David Jeremiah #4 The fourth Great Awakening was the Jesus Movement. #1 Revival is coming back to life. Revival is refreshment; it’s restoration; it’s returning to original condition. Psalm 80:19 (ESV) Restore us, O LORD God! Let your face shine, that we may be saved! A revival is when God’s people come back to life again. A spiritual awakening is what America needs. Revival is what the church needs. Revelation 2:4–5 (NKJV) "…you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works,” #2 Revival is waking from sleep. It’s turning from sin. Who should be ministering what, to whom? Toward the end of his letter to the Romans Paul gives us some background on his assignment to the Gentiles. He wasn't sent out with rituals and sacraments, or even hidden knowledge. It was a mission to bring the gospel in a powerful way. There's so much here in Romans chapter 15 that can correct human errors about "the ministry." This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2689 – A Joyful Life Because God Is Life Putnam Church Message – 08/03/2025 Sermon Series: 1, 2, & 3 John “A Joyful Life - God is Life.”   Last week, we began a new systematic verse-by-verse study of the letters 1, 2, & 3 John, followed by Jude with insights and introduction to 1, 2, & 3 John., This week, we will begin going through these letters, and today, we will cover 1 John 1:1-4 as we explore “A Joyful Life - God is Life.” Let's read 1 John 1:1-4 from the NIV, which is found on page 1898 of your Pew Bibles. That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared;/ we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father/ and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our[a] joy complete. Opening Prayer The Old Elder's Sacred Hymnal Imagine, if you will, a community nestled deep in the Appalachian Mountains, where generations had always found their deepest solace and strongest unity in the act of worship. At the very heart of their gatherings was a sacred treasure: the Sacred Hymnal. It was an ancient, hand-bound volume, filled not just with words and notes, but with the very deep and rich hymns of the faith that had been the core of their Christian community for centuries. This Hymnal held the essence of their spiritual identity,> their history with the Lord, their enduring promises, and their profound, unshakeable joy. Its melodies and truths had been intimately given and taught by the Divine Composer Himself, who had shared His very heart in song through His Beloved Son. Now, only a few, very old members of this community, the Original Witness Bearers, had actually walked and sung with the Beloved Son. They had seen Him teach the very first hymns, had heard His voice ring out with divine authority, and had even felt the tangible presence of His Spirit as their hands held the first copies of the Hymnal's truths. Their lives were utterly intertwined with these living songs. But as years turned into decades, and the younger generations grew up, many had begun to rely on distant echoes of the hymns. Some knew the words on the page, but the melody had faded in their hearts. Others listened to flimsy, modern tunes, catchy but shallow, that lacked the profound depth and spiritual weight of the originals. A subtle, lethargic boredom, a kind of spiritual apathy, crept into the community. The initial thrill of shared worship
