Most months have four Fridays, and we know what to do with them. We put out a podcast: a different but related one for each Friday in the month. Sometimes, however, a month has five Fridays, and then we do something different - usually celebrating sound in one way or another. This month on Friday Number Five we continue an irregular series of podcasts of music issued under Creative Commons licences: music to listen to during the summer heatwave. The music ranges from old-school EDM to soundscapes and indie folk, but it all flows together nicely. The musicians include Comfort Fit, Monopole, Nobara Hayakawa, Paper Navy, adcbicycle, Entertainment for the Brain Dead, Halogen, and Brad Sucks.

He spent his youth living in a string of rental properties owned by shady landlords, public housing and on at least one occasion, a homeless shelter. Not long after the fatal shooting of his eldest sister he dropped out of high school. A white math teacher responded to Norman's request that he be taught things like calculus and trigonometry rather than basic addition and subtraction by informing him that "all of you will be flipping burgers or in jail or end up dead anyway so there's no point in teaching any of you that." That was the final straw for Norman. He dropped out of high school at the age of 15 and soon find out through a series of tests administered by the GED administrators that he could only read on a 6th grade level. Unable to find anyone to help him improve his reading skills he began figuring out ways to teach himself. He obtained his GED at the age of 16 and enrolled in community college.Norman is the first member of his family to attend college. He graduated with honors from UMKC with a Masters in Social Work in 2012. He is currently employed with the Johnson County Department of Corrections where he strives to be a positive influence and role model for youth in crisis. In 2016, after being diagnosed with a series of weight related emergency health issues Norman once again taught himself how to survive. Having grown up in a food desert he had never learned how to make healthy food choices. So he created a nutritional plan and taught himself how to cook. Just over a year later he is 146 pounds lighter with a clean bill of health. Norman lives in South Kansas City on an urban farm he started with his wife of ten years and their 5 children. Season 2, Episode 28: Mallorie Webb Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Mallorie Webb. Mallorie was born in Canton, GA and was raised between Atlanta, GA and Woodstock, GA by divorced parents. She had a blended family through divorce and remarriages. She has lived on her own since she was 17 years old (after asking her mother to sign emancipation papers behind her father's back). She worked since she was 14 years old, either at fast food restaurants or on the horse farm where her dad owned a horse boarding business. She graduated high school in 1996, and although she attempted college three times over the course of her adult life, it never happened because: MATH. She left home for Athens, OH on a whim and lived and worked there for a few months. She moved back to Atlanta where she met her husband at a steak house where she was traveling all over the east coast as a corporate trainer. They moved to Washington DC area to further his career in 2002. This is where she entered the real estate/land development/construction/home design industry. She worked for a developer and builder. Once they adopted a child, she decided to stay home. It wasn't enough for her so she co-founded a non-profit community. Her life centered around raising her son and helping transitional families. In 2014, after her son started kindergarten, she and her husband decided they wanted to move home and they were able to move home in June 2015 after her husband found a job. Her husband is a restaurateur and enjoys golf and sailing. Mallorie is mom to one handsome little boy and she enjoys backpacking, camping, survivalist shows, practical jokes, and ultimately learning new things: plant identification, insect identification, smoking meats, DIY projects, etc. The most important thing to her in life is relationships. Her personal mantra is "find your tribe, blood or not, you have one and they need you as much as you need them." Here is an article Mallorie wrote about adopting her son: http://www.chicagonow.com/portrait-of-an-adoption/2013/11/i-want-you-to-meet-your-parents/ The Curiosity Hour Podcast is hosted and produced by Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund. Ilana lives a pretty typical life in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband Jeff, kids Reed and Juliet, and menagerie of pets including her dog, Peso, and cats Benjamin and Juniper. And, she is pretty happy with this typical life, considering it hasn't always been that way. Ilana grew up with a mom who was single for much of the time, put herself through college, got married at 25, was widowed at 27, was re-married at 30, found out she was pregnant two weeks after her wedding, went to graduate school in her 30s, and had two back-to-back cross-country moves before ending up in Nevada. Ilana discovered a passion for museums at the age of 16, when she was forced to volunteer for one. She has been lucky that she has been able to work in a field she loves, and is currently the Curator of Photography for the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas. She also just began a new role as Communication and Outreach Manager, which means she gets paid to spend a lot of time on Facebook. She holds a BA in Anthropology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and an MA in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University. In the little bit of spare time she has, Ilana loves listening to music, talking about museum related things, traveling (especially to museums and cemeteries), cooking Vegetarian food, baking, and forcing her kids to fall in love with the things that she likes to do. She attended undergrad at the University of Northern Iowa and completed her master's through Mount Mercy University. Andrea and her husband grew up 45 minutes away from each other in Iowa, but met in London, England on a blind date while he was stationed there for the Air Force and she was working for the summer with Camp Adventure. They have been married for 15 years and have three children: Inga (10), Elsa (8), Thomas (6). Also, they have a black cat, Esmeralda, and a Welsh Terrier, Sadie. She has been teaching for 13 years and she has taught about everything from kindergarten through 6th grade. Currently, she is teaching 1st grade at Nixon Elementary in Hiawatha, Iowa. She is serving her 4th year on the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) Executive Board at her children's school. Recently she accepted a board position at Camp Wyoming located in Wyoming, Iowa. It is a Presbyterian camp and retreat center that she attended as a child, volunteered as a counselor as a teenager, and worked as a staff member the summer after graduating from high school. Her children now attend this same camp and she said it's fun for her to see how things have stayed the same yet changed so much! She spends a lot of time volunteering at her children's school, driving the kids to and from their activities, and cheering them on at dance competitions, recitals, and wrestling practice/meets…hence her slight caffeine addiction. She enjoys reading, when she has the chance, and traveling with her family. Andrea and her husband have weekly date nights on their couch, after their kids are in bed, when they watch "Walking Dead." Her husband serves in the Air National Guard and is currently deployed so these date nights have to sometimes take place over the phone. Season 1, Episode 24: Mobley Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, the musician Mobley. Cutting vocals in the woods behind his college dorm. Mixing in the backseat of a sedan. Sneaking into the music department after hours to teach himself to play new instruments (and sneaking out before the faculty arrived in the morning). From the start, Mobley's work has been marked by solitude, ingenuity, and a drive that could only be called obsessive. Whether you experience his music on record or at one of his live shows (on stage, he's electric), the passion is palpable. Mobley grew up all over the world, from the Spanish Mediterranean to the California coast. Perhaps it's because of this itinerant childhood that he finds it so hard to sit still. Over the last few years, he's composed dozens of pieces for stage and television (with placements on HBO, Fox, and NBC), played 200+ national tour dates (with the likes of Phantogram, JUNGLE, Mutemath, Robert Delong, & Wavves and at festivals like SXSW, CMJ, Savannah Stopover and Float Fest), and recorded (then scrapped) two whole albums in pursuit of the songs that would become his forthcoming full-length debut, Fresh Lies. Mobley wrote, produced, and played every instrument on the album. The music -- which Mobley calls "post-genre pop" -- defies easy classification, drawing liberally (often simultaneously) from an array of musical traditions. He's equally at home on a playlist next to The Weeknd and TV on the Radio alike, while his electronic, dub-dabbling production style calls to mind the intricate work of artists like James Blake and Thom Yorke. This summer and fall, he's touring as a one-man band, singing and playing keys, guitar, bass, drums, and samplers. He's spanning the United States and Mexico in support of his newest EP release, Some Other Country, out now on Violent Films. Season 1, Episode 18: Will Carpenter / Ships Have Sailed Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Will Carpenter from the band, Ships Have Sailed. Since their inception, Ships Have Sailed have always struck a balance between exuberant pop and substantial alternative rock. Their debut EP ‘Someday' (2014) was well received throughout the US, Canada and the UK, catalyzing a Northeastern US tour and landing the band showcases at SXSW, CMJ Music Marathon, Canadian Music Week, & NAMM in 2015. They took home accolades from ISC and Unsigned Only that same year, furthering the band's impetus for the release of their first full length album, ‘Moodswings'. The eleven song studio effort earned glowing reviews from Blackbook, Wild Honey Pie, and The 405, again receiving notice from ISC, Unsigned Only and The John Lennon Songwriting Competition, and spawned a sister release ‘Re: MIX', whose tropical house remixes seemed in perfect step with the evolving music climate. An invigorated 2016 began with Ships Have Sailed's acoustic EP, ‘Whispers'. The band spent the summer touring the West coast and set out on an East coast tour in late fall. In November, ‘Drive' received Best Alternative Song at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, a massive feat and a testament to the group's ability to translate their own momentum into a pulsing, universal anthem about love, longevity and forward motion. Along with the success and progress achieved over the past year, for which they have been unwaveringly grateful, Ships Have Sailed also saw the inherent challenges of unexpected events and unpredictable variables of their continuing journey. Coming off the road on the final leg of their 2016 tour cycle, and in a particularly reflective and somewhat exhausted moment, a new idea was born. In his own words, the group's spearhead, songwriter and producer, Will Carpenter says “[In] a moment that was both happy and sad, reflective and hopeful, satisfied but still hungry, I tried to muster up the words to convey the mix of emotions that this year had evoked. At first it was a thoughtful process, but once the grain of the idea took shape, the music just kind of poured out…and it was incredibly cathartic.” The result will be heard in the band's new single, ‘Up', which Carpenter sees as a call “to those of us with a dream that, however long the odds, is something we're willing to fight for.” ‘Up' was released on February 3, 2017 and is available everywhere digital music is sold or streamed. Her family also has two dogs, two cats, and a lizard. She has her BFA in printmaking and painting and her BSN (psych certified). She was born in Cedar Rapids, IA and she has lived in Kansas City, MO and currently lives in Denver, CO. Important notes from Ellie: in the casual style of the interview, I left out a lot of teaching. I worry about that. I want to ensure that those that require help get the assistance they need. Obviously, I can't cover every topic but these are the most important things I'd like to get across; 1) If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health concern, PLEASE reach out for help. It's available. In the event of a crisis, call 911 or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). In addition, the National Alliance on Mental Illness has excellent information available and can be accessed at nami.org. Please take mental health seriously; ask questions, validate feelings and, most importantly, take action. 2) If you are experiencing domestic violence, please know you are not alone. You are not stupid or incapable or unworthy of being treated with respect. When you are ready to get out, there are people that can and will help you. It is not easy and it may get worse before it gets better. But, this doesn't have to be a secret. Absolutely no one has a right to hurt you, let alone someone that claims to love you. A good starting point is thehotline.org or call 1−800−799−7233 (please be careful). In addition, for me personally, the book Why Does He Do That; Inside the Mind of Angry and Aggressive Men by Lundy Bancroft was particularly helpful and eye-opening. 3) Please take care of yourselves and love on those around you. Sometimes simply asking a question can be life-saving. Be bold. Don't hesitate. It can be scary. But, realistically, even if you have an inaccurate perception, the person you ask will hear your love and concern. Prior to moving to Haiti, Matt was the director of a program for at-risk youth in Central Pennsylvania and Julie worked at a local hospital. In previous years, prior to having children, they also spent time working in Nicaragua and have also spent some time in the Dominican Republic doing missions and development work. Matt was also previously on the leadership team of the local chapter of Upward, a faith-based sports program. Matt has a love for sports and politics. He has been a lifelong lover of statistics, starting that love with baseball and basketball and then moving that love on to politics as well. Much to his wife's dismay he could probably tell you the voting history of all the counties of Pennsylvania and the batting average of the members of the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies, while not being able to remember family member's birthdays!
