Australian artist releases for October of 1966 brings us a future #1 with The Easybeats, “Sorry” and a future Top 10 with Johnny Young and Kompany's, “Let It Be Me”. Quite a few hidden gems along the way, with four from artists recording on the Perth-based Clarion label; Ray Hoff and The Offbeats, Maggie Fitzgibbon, Robbie Snowden and the Johnny Young and Kompany Top 10 entry. We'll hear the final 45 from Ray Brown and The Whispers, and a track from Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs MkII, that I've never previously heard! And plenty more, with a whole month's worth crammed into a single episode. This podcast has been a month in production due to chemotherapy side effects, mainly fatigue. With chemotherapy now finished for the time being, I can hopefully return to more regular production of these podcasts.

Podcast #55 stammt von Jana Rush (https://soundcloud.com/planetmurecords) aka https://soundcloud.com/jaru-1, einer der interessantesten Künstlerinnen Chicagos, der Stadt von Dance Mania. Das Label um DJ Deeon und seine Crew haben Jana musikalisch großgezogen und geprägt, seit sie im Alter von elf Jahren anfing aufzulegen. Keine Überraschung, dass sie in dieser Szene später auch DJ Rashad und andere Teklife Künstler kennenlernte. Dennoch fehlte ihr damals das Vertrauen in ihr eigenes Talent und Jana entschied sich, sich zunächst auf einen "richtigen" Job zu konzentrieren. In ihrem Artistprofile kann man zum Beispiel lesen, dass sie bei der Feuerwehr arbeitete, als Chemie-Ingenieurin bei einer Ölraffinerie und gerade als CT-Scan Assistentin im Krankenhaus. Musik war dabei immer eine Art mentale Rettungsleine für sie, etwas an das sie sich klammmern konnte wenn der Stress des Alltags zu groß wurde oder die Depression, mit der sie kämpfen musste, die Oberhand gewann. Indem sie diesen Struggle in ihrer eigenen Musik einfließen ließ (und immer noch lässt) hat sie ihren eigenen Sound und so am Ende zu sich selbst gefunden. "Painful Enlightenment" heißt dann passenderweise auch ihr aktuellstes Album. In den letzten Jahren konnte sie nicht nur als DJ Dancefloors auf der ganzen Welt beglücken sondern auch einige grandiose Releases auf Labels wie Objects Unlimited oder Planet Mu veröffentlichen, wo auch ihr neues Album "Dark Humor" im März rauskommt. Im April steht auch eine kleine Tour durch Europa an, die von Corona hoffentlich nicht vermiest wird. Um ihren Style zu beschreiben greift das Label "Footwork" definitiv zu kurz, vor allem da Jana selbst eher ein gespaltenes Verhältnis zum Genre und seinen Konventionen hat. Schlauerweise macht sie jedoch diesen Konflikt zum Ausgangspunkt ihrer musikalischen Experimente und zitiert, destilliert und dekonstruiert fast jedes bekannte Footwork Motiv von sich wiederholenden, wild zerstückelte und neu zusammengesetzte Vocalsamples, 808 Drumsounds, Rhythmen, die ihren Puls zwischen schnellen Offbeats und swingendem Halftime-Feel verschieben bis hin zu smoothen Jazz-, Rap- und Soulsamples, die auf die reiche Musikgeschichte des Genres und Chicagos selbst verweisen in eine düsterere, dystopische Version. Besonders in ihren eigenen Tracks drückt sie dieser Mischung einen Stempel auf, der von ihrem persönlichen Struggle erzählt, vom Widerstreit zwischen dem Etablierten, "Erwachsensein" und mit "richtiger Arbeit" Geld verdienen, Alltagsstress und Depression auf der einen Seite und Innovation, zu sich selbst finden, Vertrauen in die eigene künstlerische Stimme aufbauen und Halt in der Musik finden auf der anderen Seite. Die Grenzen zwischen DJ-Set und Live-Performance verlaufen dabei fließend, denn ihr Samplepad hat sie meistens auch beim Auflegen dabei. Big ups to Jana for this breathtaking mix! Girl from Ipanema, Corcovado und eben Desafinado. Was den Bossa Nova so interessant macht ist seine Jazz-Harmonik (mit teils sehr komplexen Kadenzen) und vor allem die Rhythmik mit vielen Offbeats. Eigentlich sind Bossa Novas die perfekten Stücke, um sich mit vielen Elementen des Jazz zu beschäftigen. Früher im Studium hatten wir in der Jazz-Harmonielehre immer Bossa Novas als Exempel. Writer John Ward is Creator Talks guest this week.  John is the writer of Offbeats and Ultrabot Go! Go! Go! created by Tom Sacchi (interview #169).  John has a four-part horror mini-series with art by Juan Romera and lettering by Eric Grissom. The first issue will be published September 4th through Antarctic Press. What's it about?  Vegas tattoo artist Dee discovers her clients are becoming possessed by the tattoos she gave them.  Her life is thrown into turmoil when she realizes her best friend Sarah has turned into a monstrous killer, seemingly controlled by her new tattoo.  A guilty Dee sets out to save Sarah, but soon finds herself out of her depth as she faces off against forces she can barely comprehend. - Diamond Previews Did you know John has a Ph. D. in physics and his thesis dealt with String Theory? Taking the show to a whole new level, John breaks down String Theory for us in layman's terms.   He also explains what is a spec script, why he writes them and what are his favorite shows are to base them on and why. My guest is comic book producer and Brooklyn native Tom Sacchi, the mind behind the crime-noir Offbeats and the 1960s manga-style Ultrabot Go Go Go!  Both comics are published through Antarctic Press.  Tom begins by sharing his memory of the 1960s television cartoon series that introduced him to the world of comics. He also shares his memory of discovering a store, before the days of direct market distribution, which sold new and back issue comics and magazines. He eventually drifted away from superhero comics and explains why the independent boom of the 1980s and Marvel’s Epic line rekindled his interest in comics. Why did he want to make comics and what podcast and television series inspired Tom to become a producer of comic books? Just what are Belgian style comics and how did they influence Tom’s Offbeats?  Who is the creative team on the series and why were they the best match for this Belgian-style comic? Which of these creators also helped make the one-shot Ultrabot Go Go Go! ? Tom explains why the art style of 1960s Japanese comics appeal to him and what they do that is so different from most comics that fits Tom penchant for quick paced story-telling. Na, hast du Lust?Hier ist dertheoretische Rhythmus-Test:https://saxvideotraining.com/rhythmus-selbst-test/Du kannst mitmachen und mitspielen und kannst direkt sehen, ob du rhythmisch gut mitkommst, ob du gut zählen kannst, auch wenn du längere Pausen zwischendrin hast. Du wirst feststellen, ob es dir leicht fällt auf die exakten Zählzeiten oder Offbeats zu spielen und ob du es schaffst mit mir ganz genau synchron zu sein.Diese Übung hier ist aber nur eine Art Vorübung vor dem eigentlichen Test, der dann im nächsten Video kommt.Hier geht es erst mal darum, zu verstehen wie man richtig zählt. Beim Zählen solltest du es schaffen immer konzentriert in der Form bzw. im Takt zu bleiben. Wir machen das ganze zuerst als eine Art Trockenübung, ohne Instrument. Nur mit Stimme, Fuß und Klatschen.Es wird dann auch bald ein bisschen schwerer, denn dieses hier ist noch ziemlich easy. Die Meisten von euch werden das ohne Probleme hinbekommen, selbst die Anfänger. Ich weiß natürlich nicht wie lange du schon spielst, aber wenn du schon mindestens 1 Jahr Saxophon lernst, dann dürfte das kein Problem sein. Wenn du schon länger spielst sowieso nicht. Vielen Musikern fällt das Thema Rhythmik ganz besonders schwer. Einige haben Probleme eine rhythmische Phrase weiter zu spielen, wenn zwischen den Noten eine längere Pause kommt und sie statt zu spielen einfach nur zählen müssen.Viele habe dann direkt eine Art Bremse im Kopf. Die Pause in den Noten bedeutet bei einigen Musikern auch eine Pause im Gehirn…Das ist aber eher ungünstig.Ich möchte euch mit diesem Video gerne helfen eine Zähl-Routine zu entwickeln. Ihr sollt euch angewöhnen immer weiter zu zählen. Euer Metronom im Kopf soll von Anfang des Songs bis zum Ende durchlaufen. Dann werdet ihr sehr sicher in der Rhythmik werden und fliegt nie mehr aus der Time oder der Form.Viel Spass bei diesem kleinen Saxophon-Workshop

As a survivor of congenital heart disease as well as Hodgkin's lymphoma, Vito Borrelli has wisdom to share with Jonathan and Josh about how to stay positive in the face of adversity. He shares his story of participating in the Offbeats youth group at the Heartbeats Children's Society, and how he tries to give back to them by supporting the youth group as a counsellor. Vito vocalizes his appreciation of the resources at Wellspring Calgary and how they help patients face cancer so they're not alone in their battle. During this episode's Canfessionals Josh shares a story of his own in a rare non-anonymous entry to the series. Our guests in the second half are Yolanda and Jay, better known as the Calgary hiphop duo Sargeant and Comrade. Yolanda talks about their upcoming music video, and a single she's collaborated on with Detroit's Filthiest, which releases today March 15 2019. We learn about their music creation process, from crate-digging for vinyl to beat-building, and the differences in how the two halves of this duo think about their stage presence. Jay and Josh discuss their collaboration as Project Blue Book, and Jay shares an out-of-this-world email they received. Danke, dass ihr bei meiner kleinen Umfrage mitgemacht habt. Es ging ja um das Thema Rhythmik. Ich hatte euch gefragt: Was sind eure größten Rhythmus Baustellen, was wollt ihr unbedingt lernen in so einem Rhythmus Kurs.Ich dachte eigentlich, da machen nur ein paar Leute mit und nehmen sich die Zeit. Es haben bis jetzt aber schon über 180 Saxophonisten teilgenommen. Und es ist oft sehr interessant, was ihr geschrieben habt. Ich hab natürlich die meisten Themen im Kurs, aber es gab tatsächlich so ein paar Antworten, die haben mich überrascht. Und ich werde auf jeden Fall ein paar Themen noch mit in den Kurs bringen…So, und jetzt zum eigentlichen Thema des Videos. Wir machen in diesem und in den nächsten paar Folgen einen kleinen Rhythmus Workshop. Ich zeig euch ein paar wichtige Rhythmus Basics, die man immer gebrauchen kann, und ihr bekommt natürlich auch ein paar Übungen dazu...Mal sehen, ob da was für euch dabei ist.Vielleicht kennst du das: Du übst an einem Takt mit viel Rhythmik, du spielst die schwere Stelle 20, 30 Mal. Und jedes Mal an derselben Stelle haut es dich wieder raus. Immer dieselbe Stelle. Ahrrrr! Da kriegt man irgendwann richtig Wut.Du warst lange geduldig und immer schön brav….aber jetzt langts echt. “Ich könnte das Sax gerade in die Ecke schmeißen….Ahrrrr!” Diese schei...Rhythmik. Das sind wahrscheinlich deine größten Baustellen: Du verlierst die 1, weißt nicht mehr wo du bist. Du kannst keine Pausen durchzählen, Offbeats schon gar nicht, Oh Je! Du denkst manchmal selber von dir: “Ich bin blöd”. Ich kann sonst eigentlich alles, aber die Rhythmik ist mir ein Rätsel. Mir fehlt das Rhythmus-Gen? Rhythmus Doofie? Das macht dich verrückt.Nach dem 100sten Mal Wiederholen klappts immer noch nicht. Da kriegt man die Krise! Und peinlich, wenn man mit anderen in einer Band spielt, und man kapierts einfach nicht. Man hat immer das Gefühl, man bremst alle anderen nur aus…Vielleicht gehts dir ja auch so…Und weißt du was? Du bist nicht der Einzige, dem es so geht!Ich kenne das zum Beispiel auch. Bei mir war das auch mal so. Du denkst jetzt vielleicht: “Ja klar, der kann das ja. Der hat ja Talent, der macht das ganz intuitiv…” Schnipp Schnipp.. und schon läufts...DAS IST SOOO EIN QUATSCH!Das hat überhaupt gar nix mit Talent zu tun. Da gibt es kein Rhythmus-Gen was man haben muss, oder irgendein extra Rhythmus-Gehirn, das gleichzeitig spielen und zählen kann…Wir haben damals mit unserer ersten Band immer probiert so Jazzrock und Fusion nachzuspielen. Brecker Brothers, Spyro Gyra, David Sanborn und so was…Unsere Band war so gut zusammen eingespielt: Wir haben zwar alle die gleiche Rhythmik gespielt, aber alle irgendwie falsch. Das ging dann so lange gut, bis zur ersten Demo-Aufnahme. Das war dann quasi die Stunde der Wahrheit oder auch Die Stunde des Grauens! Da habe ich dann das erste mal gemerkt, dass sich das bei Michael Brecker irgendwie anders anhört...mmmmh...besser! Also hab ich mir das Metronom HIER besorgt: Das uralte Ding, mein liebster Feind. Und hab mich hingesetzt und Viertel, Achtel und Sechzehntel geübt. Erst mit Tonleitern und Etüden und später auch mit ganzen Passagen aus Liedern. Hab mich immer wieder aufgenommen und versucht alles viel genauer zu spielen:Genau die Finger bewegen, genauer mit der Zunge anstoßen, Genauer auf den Punkt spielen, genauer Atmen..
