I may have created this, but I wouldn't be here 10 years later if it wasn't for the support of hundreds of thousands of families from around the country who sit down with their kids and take a few minutes to explain gratitude and giving something to someone you will never meet.  -Emily Spencer This week's story takes us to Florida where we meet Emily Spencer, the Founder & President of Heartillery Group, heartillerygroup.org, a non-profit with a simple mission: to spread love and gratitude for those who serve through cards, letters and gift boxes. A graduate of Manhattan College with a master degree from Harvard in Operation Management, Emily has spent her career as an advocate for soldiers, veterans, and their families. The proud wife of a former United States Army captain who served two tours in Afghanistan and one in Kuwait, she knows only too well the toll a deployment takes not just on troops but on their families. And then, there are our veterans who we must never forget…and to whom we owe so much. For over 10 years, Emily has been growing her non-profit by creating community based strategic partnerships in order to enhance fundraising efforts and to build robust services for our nation's troops, veterans, and families. In this interview, Emily shares how far Heartillery Group has come and what this noble work means to her. #military #veterans #heartillerygroup #valentinesforveterans

The Johns are now at a point where both are inextricably linked. Saunders talks shop revamp, QC, SMW custom ERP (ALEX), and DOITS (Days Off In The Shop). It's not enough to just make parts. Having refined and dialed in processes that are simple and effective are key to long-term success. Also, SCREW GOALS. Go for bite-size, actionable steps instead! Saunders outlines 3 phases full of small actionable tasks that will benefit the business and products. While both of these hosts have discussed lots of ideas and theories, but something's changed. The podcast may be all talk but outside of this hour confine, there's less talk, more doing. Boiling Point Both hosts find themselves boiling for different reasons. One has to do with QC and another has to do with A/C.  Saunders provides the best analogy for part quality during production runs: the frog in boiling water. With a shout out to Jake Yates from Yates Precision, Saunders is now combining AQL (Acceptable Quantity Limit) and an acrylic stroke of genius from Alex (the person, not the ERP system). In these sweltering temperatures, Monday can't come soon enough for the GK team! Deadlines Come and Go Grimsmo may not have made the July 1st deadline for having a completed Rask but the gains made weren't in vain. The deadline simulated an external driving force to keep him focused and driven. He delights in his newfound comfort with running the KERN. Not only are the pallet changers something that make him smile, he's also demanding that zero-point fixturing be used on EVERY machine. Cut Bait? Eumachs sat in storage for 6 months and have been in the shop for another 6 months. Grimsmo knows it's time to get service techs to inspect and repair. If push comes to shove, he may end up having to cut his losses and move forward but he remains hopeful that these will soon be dedicated foam cutting machines. NOTHING COMPARES TO U... This isn't about getting into someone's personal business....or is it? Eumachs lack of probing summons Saunders' experience with the Fanuc Robodrill, which has neither a spindle or tool probe (video coming soon). The workflow incorporates a Speroni Tool Presetter and Haimer, which works well but nothing---and I mean nothing compares to DATRON's VacuCard and camera-assisted probing. NOTHING. The Future of Hand Coding Saunders and Grimsmo ponder about the future of manufacturing. With the advents between CAM and high speed machining, it's difficult to envision a world where hand coding remains ubiquitous. Grimsmo Holmes GK is perusing and investigating processes to determine the lowest hanging, high yield fruit to increase production and he's sitting on a smoking gun solution that he can do immediately!

In this episode we are interviewing the editors of Production and Operations Management (POM) journal. We are joined by Dr. Kalyan Singhal and Dr. Subodha Kumar. Dr. Singhal is the editor-in-chief and Dr. Kumar is the deputy editor-in-chief for POM. This is the fourth episode of Listen to the Editors, a series of interviews with journal editors to unveil the trends in research for Operations and Supply Chain Management. The host for this show is Iuri Gavronski, Associate Professor for the Graduate Program in Business for the UNISINOS Jesuit University. POM, founded in 1992, is one of the longer living journals in the field. The mission of the journal is to publish research in all areas of Operations Management, in all research paradigms, according to Dr. Singhal. POM has 12 issues per year, and publishes around 150 papers in those issues. With 140,000-150,000 submissions per year, POM as a rejection rate of around 90%. According to Dr. Kumar, 70% of the rejections occur up to the first round. Dr. Singhal believes that one of the differentials of the journal is that most research go to the reviewers, so the authors have the opportunity to have a feedback on their manuscript. The main reasons for desk rejection is lack of fit (a paper that was not written for an Operations audience) or lack of a contribution. Dr. Singhal divides the contribution in two dimensions: a contribution to the theory and the solving of a real problem. The standard editorial process starts with the editor-in-chief assigning a department editor to the manuscript. In general, this department editor was the one suggested by the authors. Then the department editor assigns a senior editor. If the senior editor does not desk-rejects the paper, he or she assigns two to three reviewers for the manuscript. The senior editor then adds his or her recommendations, and sends for the department editor for the decision. We also discussed how to integrate analytical and empirical paradigms in a single paper. Dr. Kumar shares his personal experiences as author in this important subject. In 2017, POM articles were downloaded 300,000 times. Regarding the global reach, the share of downloads was 29% for China, 23% US, 6% UK, 18% others.
