As my grandma Moo approaches her 100th birthday, she tells me she wants a kitty. What grandma wants, grandma gets. So I start my kitty hunt, deciding that an older feline will do the trick. After hours of searching, I come across the dream kitty at Santa Barbara Humane. Her name's Maribel, and I fall in love with her immediately. But I can't get out that day to adopt her because of an Improv show I have to do that night. So I call and ask them to please hold on to this cat until the next morning. The person on the other end, however, lets me know that they have a first come, first served policy for adoptions. And she can't break the policy even after I explain that it's for my 100-year-old grandmother.  “If the kitty isn't adopted, she's yours first thing in the morning,” she says. So the next morning, my husband Mark and I get in the car in the pouring rain and make a stop at Petco for supplies on the two-hour drive to Santa Barbara Humane's Santa Maria Campus. When we get there I announce, “We're here to adopt Maribel.” Just then I notice another couple in the waiting area who says, “Oh, we're here to adopt Maribel too.” My heart sinks. We're five minutes too late from being first. This other couple goes into the room to meet Maribel. We wait. When they reemerge they share that she won't come out from under her chair to greet them, so they've decided to adopt another cat!  Hurray! Mark and I still have a shot at this and rush into the room. And wouldn't you know it? Just as we sit down on the floor, this dream kitty for Moo instantly comes right out, plops herself down in Mark's lap and starts purring away. (I secretly think she was hiding from the other couple on purpose because she knew we were the right humans to adopt her.) Happy endings to stories like that happen every day, and today's special guest gets to witness them personally. Kerri Burns is the CEO of Santa Barbara Humane. In this episode, she talks about what the Humane Society is all about, shares stories of some of the pets she's fostered, reveals the three different types of cats, and discusses how the organization in Santa Barbara works with animals and people to make sure adoptions are a great fit for both. She also answers curious questions like: How does a chihuahua in dire straits show the good intentions people can have? How is the Humane Society part of a bigger whole? And what amazing things does Santa Barbara Human do for animals (and humans)?  What you will learn in this episode: What it means to think from the paws up What misconception always comes up regarding stories of sheltered animals How you can help change the story for animals in shelters Who is Kerri? Kerri Burns has served several roles in the Humane Society and other animal rights organizations across the country. She was the Interim Chief Executive Officer and President of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona in Tucson. Then she served as the President of Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando before moving on as Interim Executive Director of the Tree House Humane Society in Chicago, Illinois. Previously, Kerri also assisted animals through some of the country's greatest animal disasters through Animal Emergency Services Programs for the American Humane Association. She's been recognized for her educational outreach on various animal welfare topics with the American Humane Association's Dennis White Award and for her management of charitable giving for PetSmart Charities®. Currently, she's the Chief Executive Officer for Santa Barbara Humane.

GUEST: Joyce Briggs is president of the Alliance for Contraception in Cats & Dogs, which advances non-surgical sterilants to increase access to humane fertility control. As executive director of PetSmart Charities, she championed funding early models of Humane Alliance high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter clinics and introduced the transport program Rescue Waggin'. She is co-founder of the Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (Oregon), which has maintained a greater than 90% save rate since 2014. She serves as advisor to 911Fosterpets and is on the board of a new nonprofit called The Functional Dog Collaborative, driven by her interests in the dog population. Joyce has a masters degree from Northwestern University. MAIN QUESTION: Why do animal welfare organizations need to begin thinking about how the demand for pets will be met in the future? TAKEAWAYS: It's important to work to develop new methods of sterilization for cats and dogs that are faster, easier, more accessible, and less expensive than surgery, especially so we can help animals around the world where resources can be limited. There are dramatic regional differences in pet populations with some parts of the country having shortages of animals available for adoption. These shortages will grow because of the success of spay/neuter programs. When shelters and rescue groups are unable to meet public demand for pets, it creates an opportunity for puppy mills and other unethical breeders to fill the void and meet demand. Shelters and rescue groups in areas where there are few animals available for adoption might consider rethinking some of their spay/neuter messaging and working with people who have physically and behaviorally healthy family dogs to humanely, ethically and responsibly breed mixed breed dogs and raise well-socialized puppies, and help find the puppies good homes. If animal welfare organizations do not begin thinking about how the demand for pets will be met in the future, we may find ourselves cleaning up messes made by others who may seek to take advantage of the opportunity to provide pets for profit and potentially in ways that are inhumane. This was definitely a full house, but a fun show highlighting Muscular Moving Men & Storage, M3 Commercial Moving & Logistic, and PetSmart. This conversation highlights very different revenue generating companies that have one common focus- growing companies with a strong culture. Whether founded in 1986 like Petsmart or 2008 like Muscular Moving Men, growing a company with a great internal culture can be imperative in company growth. The culture of these two companies helped them both succeed and continue to grow through the pandemic as well. We wish the listeners could see the guests picking up their dogs to share with the camera, but the conversation (even without the dogs) is worth listening. Although puppies and kittens are of course a perk of Petsmart, there are other parts of the culture that Dani and Lauren discuss. Petsmart has continued to progress through the pandemic, support their staff through working from home, and continuing to have passion for people and pets. Jennifer and Justin gave insight into the culture of Muscular Moving Men from the beginning and through the pandemic. They have been able to keep a strong family culture, continuing to support the staff through motivation, while keeping the customers accountable and safe as well. Both companies have growth plans for the future that also include doing good for the community as well. Founders Josh Jurhill and Justin Hodge started Muscular Moving Men to be leaders in the moving industry. Arizona natives, initially just local moving company, MMM added long distance moves, storage, commercial moving & storage and this year Junk Removal. Over the last 12 years Muscular Moving Men & Storage has expanded and seen tremendous growth focusing on amazing company culture and advancement. The staff at MMM has grown with the company with most office members initially starting in the field. According to Justin Hodge Co-Founder, “Its important that our entire staff understand how a move works and how important it is we take care of our customers on moving day.”. Fast forward to 2020 MMM has expanded into a 20,000sf warehouse, 20 trucks, a commercial & junk removal division and a staff of around 70 hard working and very talented individuals. The core values of the company have and always will be “Outstanding Service, competitive rates, Muscles for a Move Made Easy!” Justin Hodge is a 2018 Phoenix Business Journal 40 Under 40 Inductee and graduate of the Walter Cronkite School at Arizona State University. He is an Arizona native and Co-Founder of Muscular Moving Men & Storage which opened their doors in 2008. With sights set on nationwide expansion, Justin and his leadership team work to change the culture of the moving industry and stay in touch with the small business feel that made the company successful out of the gate. Guest: Aimee St. Arnaud is director of National Veterinary Outreach for Best Friends Animal Society. She previously was Director of Programs at the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, was a Program Manager at PetSmart Charities, and founded Humane Ohio, a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. She is also co-owner of Open Door Veterinary Care and Community Pet Care Clinic. Main question: How can animal welfare organizations improve access to veterinary care in their communities? Takeaways: * The inability to afford veterinary care has become one of the most common reasons for the surrender of pets to shelters. Finding ways to provide needed veterinary and other services to keep pets with their people is increasingly falling to animal welfare organizations and will likely be part of our work for the foreseeable future. * Because pets have measurable benefits to human health and wellbeing, it’s more cost effective for entire communities to keep pets with their people. This creates many opportunities for partnerships between humane organizations, human services organizations and governmental agencies as well as local veterinarians. * Three things organizations can do now to improve access-to-care are: ~ Create and provide a pet resource guide to help people find affordable care options, animal-food pantries, pet-friendly housing, etc. ~ Offer low-cost vaccines because it helps people find housing. That’s because proof of vaccinations is required by many boarding facilities, landlords, and low-income government housing. ~ Start a veterinary medical fund where donations are used to help people cover at least some of the costs needed to help care for their pets. She also shares great ideas about how to personalize fundraising for spay/neuter initiatives. To find out more visit the PetSmart Charities online.

Dr. Newman describes how the Barry County Animal Shelter implemented a TNR program — with the help of the MRFRS Mentoring Program and PetSmart Charities — that has resulted in a drastic reduction in unwanted litters among unowned cats. She describes her humble beginnings as a spay/neuter advocate — “fixing 12 cats a month wasn’t going to cut it” — and how she sought advice and then, the cooperation of local officials and volunteer vets to help address the problem.  Her advice to those facing similar challenges?  “Just do it.” To find out more visit the Barry County online.
