The MCU X-MEN cast is here: Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm & Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. Naturally, everyone is being extremely calm and reasonable about it. We also dig into the AVENGERS DOOMSDAY news of David Harbour confirming Tony Stark?! Dave Bautista taking over as KRATOS in Amazon's GOD OF WAR series, and the LANTERNS fallout surrounding Hal Jordan's Death Scene — because apparently fandom needed a few more things to argue about this week. Plus: Shawn Levy & Ryan Gosling's GHOST RIDER coming together almost immediately while BLADE remains trapped somewhere in the Quantum Realm of development, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II speaking out about WONDER MAN, and the bigger question tying all of this together: Marvel. DC. God Of War. Everyone's happy. Everything's fine. Follow Coy Jandreau: Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@coyjandreau?l... Two years after its surprising first season, X-Men '97 returns to Disney Plus as the series dives straight into what was teased in the 2024 finale: Apocalypse. Can the show follow up its lean, gangbusters debut season with something just as worthwhile? Or will the loss of creator and writer Beau DeMayo spell trouble for this lore-heavy animated series? We discuss the eleventh hour changes, a show without its steward, and what we thought of X-Men '97's turbulent storylines.

Marvel finally put the MCU X-Men cast on stage at D23, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister might not even be the most interesting name on the list. Frank and Thomas break down the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, the full X-Men lineup, the X-Men '97 season 2 finale, and the Lanterns premiere on HBO. The Doomsday conversation starts where most fan reactions did, with Robert Downey Jr.'s voice under the Doom mask, and moves into power scaling against Thor, the Reed and Victor history the trailer is quietly setting up, and which legacy characters are unlikely to survive December 18. From there it's the casting reveals: Christopher Abbott as a much younger Professor X, a Magneto without the Holocaust backstory, Inde Navarrette stepping into a role Lenore Zann has owned for three decades, and Maya Boyd going from Broadway to Storm with no screen credits at all. The back half turns critical. X-Men '97 season 2 lands an 8 out of 10 from both hosts, with a long argument about why the resurrection plotting undercut Nightcrawler's sacrifice and why the middle stretch never matched the Egypt episodes. Then it's full spoilers on Lanterns, including the ending, the Watchmen and True Detective fingerprints all over it, and predictions about the 2016 timeline and where Guy Gardner fits. 0:00 December 18 plans, Dune vs. Avengers Doomsday 2:20 Avengers Doomsday trailer, Doom's voice and power scaling 9:15 The MCU X-Men cast reveal from D23 22:50 Vision Quest first look and the case for bringing Ultron back 26:23 Star Wars Starfighter and the rest of the D23 slate 27:55 X-Men '97 season 2 finale review and grades 38:41 Lanterns series premiere, full spoilers 55:33 Weekly recommendations Key takeaways The Doomsday trailer sold Doom as a real successor to Thanos, largely on the strength of one shot stopping Stormbreaker and throwing Thor back. Marvel is casting the X-Men young on purpose. Magneto reportedly loses the Holocaust background entirely because of it, which Thomas calls pivotal enough to worry about. Inde Navarrette reads as an early, guarded Rogue rather than the fully powered version from the comics or X-Men '97, and the real question is how she sounds next to Lenore Zann's voice. Adam Driver as Mister Sinister lines up with the gene manipulation groundwork already laid in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. X-Men '97 season 2 gets an 8 from both hosts. The voice work, especially A.J. LoCascio's shift once Gambit takes back control, holds up even where the pacing does not. Lanterns plays like prestige HBO rather than DCU house style, and its best material is the pilot's first five minutes and the jailhouse interrogation, not the constructs. Quotes "How many times can you kill Patrick Stewart?" (Thomas, on the Doomsday casualty list) "This one felt like, oh, all hands on deck." (Thomas, on the Doomsday trailer) "The idea of resurrecting somebody needs to feel impossible to you." (Frank, on X-Men '97 season 2) "There's this cognitive dissonance for me with this season." (Thomas, on grading X-Men '97) "Both these men are living false perspectives of what it means to be a hero." (Frank, on Hal and John in Lanterns) All news covered on this episode comes from GeekFreaksPodcast.com, including the full D23 announcement roundup and the footage that never got an official release. AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY JUST GOT EVEN BIGGER — AND DOCTOR DOOM LOOKS ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING! #AvengersDoomsday #DoctorDoom #RobertDowneyJr #D23 #TrailerReaction #MarvelStudios #MCU #FantasticFour #XMen #ReelRejects Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey react to the brand-new Avengers: Doomsday trailer revealed at D23, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom and a massive collision between the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wakandans, and more. Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Oppenheimer) as Doctor Doom, Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby (The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) as Sue Storm, Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Extraction) as Thor, Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek: Picard) as Professor X, and Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings, X-Men) as Magneto. After watching the new D23 footage, Aaron and John break down Doctor Doom's ominous introduction, his green eyes, ceremonial armor, devastated surroundings, and the trailer's heavy focus on his history with the Fantastic Four. They react to Reed Richards confronting Doom, the emotional hints surrounding Doom's tragic past, Thor being blasted away with seemingly little effort, and the sheer power and presence Robert Downey Jr. brings to Marvel's next major villain. The conversation also explores the massive scope of Avengers: Doomsday, including appearances from Professor X, Magneto, Gambit, Wakandan heroes, Sentinels, and the larger multiversal conflict bringing multiple Marvel worlds together. Aaron and John discuss how the darker visual language surrounding Doom contrasts with the retro-futuristic world of the Fantastic Four, why the Reed and Doom relationship may provide the emotional core of the movie, and whether Doomsday could ultimately reset the MCU timeline heading into Avengers: Secret Wars. This week, we bounce from questionable kindergarten teaching techniques and a tour through old movies to a pile of upcoming sci-fi and superhero projects. Then, in Future or Now, AI gives hurricane forecasters a potentially huge advantage, NASA pulls off another bit of engineering wizardry to keep Voyager 2 alive, and the cast of The Pitt boldly goes where plenty of actors have gone before. Real Life Steven is officially over summer. Heat, summer schedules, summer in general—it's time to move on. Meanwhile, Ben has been watching OLD MOVIES, including Kindergarten Cop. Ben calls it an "exceptional film," but watching Arnold Schwarzenegger take control of a classroom in 2026 raises some questions. How would Detective John Kimble's teaching methods stack up against modern school employee safety training? How many policies would he violate before lunch? And perhaps most unsettling: just how old are all those kindergarteners today? That sends us down the inevitable road of examining an old movie through the lens of people who now have entirely too much experience with how schools actually operate. Steven also has a pile of upcoming genre television and movie news to talk about. Neuromancer is headed to Apple TV, while Blade Runner 2099 is coming as a limited series on Prime Video. San Diego Comic-Con also brought news about Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3, along with more X-Men casting news involving Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast, and Professor X. Trailer Links: Neuromancer: Watch on YouTube Blade Runner 2099: Watch on YouTube Devon has been doing some family movie watching, working through the Jumanji movies and eventually arriving at Zathura. Technically part of the larger Jumanji family, Zathura doesn't quite live up to its predecessor. It doesn't help that Dax Shepard's character has to exist in the shadow of Robin Williams, which leads to the assessment that Shepard comes across as "a block of wood" by comparison. Things get considerably darker with The Long Walk, based on Stephen King's novel originally published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym. Devon found the adaptation interesting and well done—but extremely bleak. That conversation somehow takes a detour through Time Runner before eventually landing on Hokum and its supernatural layer. Future or Now AI Gets Better at Predicting Hurricanes Ben brings us a potentially enormous development in weather forecasting. Google DeepMind's WeatherNext AI system has demonstrated an ability to improve hurricane forecasts, potentially giving forecasters and emergency planners an additional day of warning. The system predicts both storm tracks and intensity and can rapidly generate thousands of possible scenarios. During Hurricane Melissa, it reportedly identified major intensification earlier than conventional forecasting models. That's potentially life-saving extra time for communities preparing for a major storm. But there's an interesting wrinkle: like many sophisticated AI systems, exactly how the model reaches some of its conclusions isn't always clear to the scientists using it. That makes WeatherNext another fascinating example of AI producing useful results while simultaneously raising questions about how much we need to understand a system before we're comfortable relying on it. And despite the improvement in modeling, humans aren't leaving the process. Meteorologists still have to interpret the information, communicate uncertainty, and turn forecasts into useful warnings for the public. Read the Ars Technica report on DeepMind's hurricane forecasting breakthrough This Week in Space: Voyager's "Big Bang" Nearly half a century after leaving Earth, Voyager 2 is still going, and NASA engineers are once again finding creative ways to keep it alive. In an operation nicknamed the "Big Bang," engineers simultaneously shut down power-hungry hardware and transitioned to lower-power alternatives while carefully keeping the spacecraft warm enough to survive. Voyager's dwindling power supply has forced NASA to make increasingly difficult decisions about which systems can remain operational, making every additional bit of usable energy precious. It's another remarkable chapter in a mission launched in 1977 that is still returning scientific data from interstellar space. Read more about the Voyager 2 operation at ScienceDaily Explore NASA's Voyager mission And while we're talking about space, we check back in on New Asgard and ask the important question: is Devon still going to space? The Pitt Goes to Star Trek Finally, there's an unusual crossover coming for fans of The Pitt and Star Trek. Noah Wyle and members of The Pitt cast are participating in a Star Trek table read benefiting the Writers Guild Foundation. It's not a new Trek series and it's not some bizarre medical-drama crossover episode—but it is an opportunity to hear a completely different cast tackle Star Trek material while supporting the foundation's programs. Read more about The Pitt cast's Star Trek table read at TrekMovie From aging action comedies to AI-powered hurricane forecasts and a spacecraft that refuses to die, this week is a reminder that the future has a funny way of colliding with the past. Join us next time for more science, sci-fi, and whatever unexpected detours we stumble into along the way.
House of the Dragon Season 3 ended with Sunfyre back from the dead and Rhaenyra executing the High Septon inside his own sept, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day gave the MCU its darkest Jean Grey yet. Frank, Thomas, and Jonathan break down both, plus the Marvel Hall H panel from San Diego Comic-Con and why Ghost Rider got announced with nothing behind it. On the House of the Dragon side: the Episode 7 resurrection that flipped the board, Helaena's tapestry and what it was quietly spoiling all along, where the show splits from Fire and Blood on her death, why Rhaenyra was never built to sit on a throne in the first place, and a final score for the season from each of them. Then a full spoiler conversation on Spider-Man: Brand New Day covering Sadie Sink's Jean Grey and the road to Dark Phoenix, the Hulk and the Punisher as mirrors for where Peter Parker could end up, the ending that made a handshake hit harder than a kiss, and whether Marvel has its footing back going into Doomsday, Secret Wars, and X-Men. Send it in. We read listener questions and topic suggestions on air. Key Takeaways Rhaenyra spent three seasons trying to be her father and the finale is the moment she stops. Frank frames it as her Anakin-to-Vader turn, right down to killing the realm's holy man and walking back out to claim she is the savior. Episode 7 and the return of Sunfyre lands as the season's biggest swing. Jonathan calls it a genuine plot twist with no setup, and it resets who is actually holding power going into Season 4. Helaena's knitting was spoiling the show in plain sight. Her tapestry lays out everything she has seen, and nobody in the story looks at it until it is too late. Both Frank and Jonathan score Season 3 an eight, with the caveat that Episodes 4 through 6 drag badly. Thomas, who bailed on the season early, gets talked into going back and finishing it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day works as a character study more than a clean three-act movie. The guys argue it is structurally strange on purpose, closer to picking up a random issue mid-run than a typical MCU installment. Jean Grey's power set is used in a much more specific and much darker way than expected, which the guys read as deliberate setup for Professor X's mental blocks and the eventual Dark Phoenix story. Quotes "She's now in her Darth Vader era." (Frank) "She was never meant to actually sit on the Iron Throne. She was always meant to capture it." (Frank) "The dragon fire ripping through a city is going to kill the good and the bad alike. It's not justice. It's just suffering." (Jonathan) "So many parts of this shouldn't work. But it does." (Thomas, on Spider-Man: Brand New Day) "I can't believe how much relief I suddenly felt from a damn handshake." X-Men ’97 Season 2 Since first blasting onto TV screens in 1992, the X-Men animated universe has been teaching us that being a mutant is hard, saving the world is harder, and finding a quiet weekend is apparently impossible. Fast-forward to 2026, and the beloved revival X-Men ’97 has continued the adventure for Season 2. This season sees the X-Men scattered across different eras as they attempt to find their way home while new threats emerge back in the 1990s. Dion, Jill and Quinny dive headfirst into X-Men ’97’s nostalgia mining mastery, featuring the voices of Ross Marquand, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, and more. Is it a heroic return to form? Or is this a timeline worthy of Professor X’s headache? As if that wasn’t enough, we chat about the biggest announcements from San Diego Comic-Con 2026, including Marvel‘s latest reveals, the ongoing future of DC, and all the nerdy goodness emerging from Hall H. The episode also takes a moment to remember Bill Oddie, the beloved comedian, wildlife presenter, conservationist, and star of The Goodies, who sadly passed away at the age of 85. For many of us, he was as much a part of our television upbringing as Saturday morning cartoons and his passing is a huge loss to all Gen X (and adjacent) kids. So grab your yellow spandex, dust off your Cerebro helmet, and join Dion, Quinny, and Jill as they explore mutants, conventions, comedy legends, and whatever other items escaped from the Danger Room. Official Synopsis (Marvel): X-Men ’97 Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence. https://youtu.be/T39s6fvYpsI A thank you to all you brotherhood (or sisterhood!) of mutants crew and X-people who join in on the Twitch stream, each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST, Plus a special thank you to those Mutants whose only super power is their generosity, and have donated their danger room pay for this show. In this week's episode, Brandon and Gabby talk about the next two episodes of X-Men '97. They discuss the two-parter set in ancient Egypt, they talk about Magneto's arc through this series, how differently he and Professor Xavier want to deal with Apocalypse, they talk about how changing the past would work in this show's universe, and what the show might do with a huge character that shows up briefly in these episodes
No Jong Lee on today's edition of Comicast, so Michael is joined by Ashley Saunders of Ashley & Company. The duo speak about the Avengers Doomsday trailer and some of the possible theories behind what is happening, who could possibly not make it out of this movie, and Doom's possible plans. Plus, the casting choice that Ashley is not happy with... there's a... gamut of possibilities. Then Ashley and Michael dive into a full spoiler discussion on episode 6 of X-Men '97. They discuss why Xavier's therapy methods aren't the healthiest, Polaris' being the standout character for the episode, how well the series balances current storylines while setting up for the future, the adaptation of Danger, what's next for Apocalypse, and much more! X-Men 97 Season 2 is packed full of characters from X-Force, the New Mutants, and Generation X, so this week we're bringing you the story of how Marvel went from the smash-hit success of the 90s X-Men and created a team of the weirdest Marvel Mutants of all time! Since the 80s Marvel had been working on a comic book series that focused on Professor X teaching children how to use their mutant powers. But when Cable turned The New Mutants into X-Force, Marvel decided to create a new comic book and refocus on the idea of Mutants being weird body-horror monsters that were rejected by the rest of the world - a comic book called Generation X! Polaris gets canned from X-Factor and comes to hang out with the X-Men, where Professor Xavier is not squashing the rumors that he was straight up in love with Magneto. When the Danger Room becomes sentient - and a slinky lady robot! - the next phase of Xavier's dream for mutantkind is born, and it involves operating an LLC.Before that: a ton of news. A bunch of trailers, including Resident Evil, The Other Mommy, The End of Oak Street and Clayface. Casting news, including Kenneth Branagh playing a goblin. And scuttlebutt and rumors coming from the early days of SDCC, including what Marvel may or may not be bringing to Hall H. Also: did Sam the Eagle vote for Trump? And is Gollum a serial killer? When the Danger Room decides to ramp up the "danger" and downplay the "room" this is what you get. We both agreed that the old version where Professor X imprisons a life form in the Danger Room so that he can train his students and then it's a revenge story is a better version of this. Also looking forward to Undead Tarot Gambit when that happens. Send us Fan MailWelcome back to DMR!As we break down the first official trailer for The Avengers: Doomsday! The trailer explodes with multiversal energy, pulling listeners into a collision of three iconic worlds—Avengers, X‑Men, and the Fantastic Four. Doctor Doom stands at the center of the chaos, radiating a level of power that instantly reframes the stakes. His confrontation with Thor, stopping Stormbreaker mid‑strike, signals that this isn't just another villain rising—it's a seismic shift in the MCU's hierarchy. The trailer leans heavily into tension, showcasing collapsing realities, returning legends, and the emotional weight of heroes facing a threat that eclipses anything they've known. What makes the trailer truly electrifying is its sense of scale and inevitability. The incursions between universes feel catastrophic, pushing characters into alliances and conflicts that fans have dreamed about for years. Seeing Steve Rogers, Loki, Professor X, and Magneto woven into the same narrative hints at a story built on legacy, consequence, and impossible choices. As Doom warns of an “unthinkable decision,” the trailer positions Doomsday as a defining chapter—one that promises not just spectacle, but a reckoning across the multiverse.Dont forget your 30 Day Free Audible Trial - Link in the show!Enjoy DMRSupport the showThe audio/video clips used in this podcast, including excerpts from movie/series/documentary trailers, are used under the principles of fair use and fair dealing for the purpose of criticism, commentary, and review. We're breaking again from new episodes this week, but don't worry, we'd never leave our fellow mutants stranded without a Cerebro signal to follow. Instead, we're dusting off a Hot Take from our Best X-Men Team Line-Up episode, originally released on May 13, 2025 as part of our Season 11.This argument features a very special guest, AJ LoCascio, the voice of Gambit in X-Men '97 on Disney+, joining our panel for a debate that's more heated than the Dark Phoenix Saga. In this clip, two legendary mutant squads enter the Danger Room, but only one survives the bracket: Grant Morrison's New X-Men versus the Outback X-Men.It's evolution versus revolution, psychic power versus sheer grit, and enough mutant mayhem to make Professor X ask everyone to please stop using their powers indoors. So grab your favorite yellow spandex, or black leather, if that's more your vibe, because it's time to find out which roster is truly uncanny. If you enjoyed what you heard, be sure to check out the full Best X-Men Team Line-Up episode in our podcast feed for even more mutant-sized debates, or visit greatpopculturedebate.com for dozens of other pop culture showdowns. We'll be back next week with an all-new, all-difference summer episode!EPISODE CREDITSEditor: Bob ErlenbackIntro/Outro Song: "Dance to My Tune" by Marc TorchSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The only logical solution to wrap up our look at the original X-Men trilogy is a updated re-release of our Caravan Of Garbage review from 2019. Sure Bryan Singer is now gone (for now) but luckily Brett "The Rat" Ratner has stepped in to take his place to conclude the stories of Wolverine, Gene Grey, Professor X, Magnet, Storm, Cyclops and many more characters that would continue to never die and re-appear in future prequels and sequels.
