Carmen Haydée Rivera and Jorge Duany's edited volume Cuba and Puerto Rico: Transdisciplinary Approaches to History, Literature, and Culture (U Florida Press, 2023) is the first systematic, comparative study of Cuba and Puerto Rico from both a historical and contemporary perspective. In these essays, contributors highlight the interconnectedness of the two archipelagos in social categories such as nation, race, class, and gender to encourage a more nuanced and multifaceted study of the relationships between the islands and their diasporas. Topics range from historical and anthropological perspectives on Cuba and Puerto Rico before and during the Cold War to cultural and sociological studies of diasporic communities in the United States.  The volume features analyses of political coalitions, the formation of interisland sororities, and environmental issues. Along with sharing a similar early history, Cuba and Puerto Rico have closely intertwined cultures, including their linguistic, literary, food, musical, and religious practices. Contributors also discuss literature by Cuban and Puerto Rican authors by examining the aesthetics of literary techniques and discourses, the representation of psychological space on the stage, and the impacts of migration. Showing how the trajectories of both archipelagos have been linked together for centuries and how they have diverged recently, Cuba and Puerto Rico offers a transdisciplinary approach to the study of this intricate relationship and the formation of diasporic communities and continuities.  Publication of this work made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Greetings friends!  Welcome to another week of our PYP Classroom Success Criteria podcast series!  We are going to have a lot of fun exploring interactive walls that are transdisciplinary.  More talk about the walls?  Yep.  They are the most underutilized teaching tool that we have at our disposal, so let's talk about ways that we can use them better. This episode was sparked by a question by our old friend, Shailja Datt, the PYP Coordinator at the Horizon Japan International School in Kanagawa.  Shailja asked: Are the walls interactive? A couple episodes ago, we talked about interactive bulletin boards as a teaching tool.  But this time, we are going to examine how we can use them to build deeper connections.  Meanwhile, our friend Nirali Parikh, a transitional kindergarten teacher, at the Creation Village World School in Celebration, Florida posed a simple question.  Nirali asked:  Is it transdisciplinary? The bigger question should be, how do we create walls that are interactive and transdisciplinary? This episode will focus on answering this big question!  Join us!For a written blog post and other resources, visit:   https://thinkchat2020.weebly.com

They said it was very funny, but because the Israeli reality is much more extreme, so the idea of people shouting at each other or breaking a wall or punching each other or doing weird stuff, the French said, 'Oh, it's over the top.' Our final episode of season 1 of Humans of Learning Sciences is with Dr. Matt Brown. Matt is a co-director at Inquirium, a design company that works collaboratively with clients to identify learning goals, and then develop custom learning environments and solutions to meet those goals. Inquirium has taken on vastly different projects, from designing exhibits at museums to developing data visualizations to help teachers track student growth. As you'll find out in today's conversation, Inquirium's approach to tackling these TRANSdisciplinary, MUTIimodal problems is grounded in part, grounded in Matt's experience as a learner, as a teacher, as well as in his training as a learning scientist. He talks about how products that are built through grant funded projects are often fantastic, but typically lack that final 10% of refinement and polish that can really make 90% of the difference in terms of long-term teacher uptake. We also talk about the scariness of starting a company with other burgeoning learning scientist at a time when the field was new – and how they distinguish themselves from other design firms with their focus on learning, and yet, also adopted existing practices and workflows from disciplines like architecture, to streamline their work. You won't want to miss this one – especially if you love the design aspect of the field and are looking for non-academic positions in which to use your skill set and perspective as a learning scientist. Today we speak with Chantal Noa Forbes, PhD from the Ecology, Spirituality, and Religion Department at CIIS. Chantal talks about her roots growing up in South Africa and how attending film school led her to explore the intersection between ecology and religion, which emerged from a growing concern regarding the environmental crisis and the state of the world religions. Chantal discusses her transdisciplinary approaches to activism through the environmental humanities. She confronts epistemological challenges born from western categorizations of knowledge, such as differences between spirituality, religion, ecology, and anthropology. We discuss her dissertation on the San Bushman of South Africa, titled “The Primal Metaphysics of Becoming-Animal During the Chasing Hunt in the Kalahari Desert,” which grapples with these epistemological challenges by utilizing a synthetic framework that draws upon structural and poststructural approaches to the exploration of ontogenetic fluidity, liminality, and multi-species subjectivities of San Bushman cosmology. Chantal shares how her research led her to articulate the novel concepts of eco-exegesis and a vision of primal metaphysics and religion. We discuss challenges working at the intersection of western academics and non-western indigenous ways of knowing. Chantal also sheds light on the importance of the scholar-activist model and how, through decolonial scholarship, one can move beyond mere interdisciplinary dialogue to more actively engage marginalized philosophical, religious, and indigenous perspectives. Chantal is a comparative cultural and religious studies scholar at the intersection of ecology and culture. Her current academic interests explore metaphysical expressions of ontological ambiguity from a multispecies and transspecies perspective of personhood. In 2021 Chantal graduated with a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) with a concentration in Ecology, Spirituality, and Religion. Using ethnographic and filmographic materials, her research inquiry undertook a metaphysical narrative-based analysis of Indigenous and decolonial approaches to environmental engagement, focused on the ontological ambiguity of human-animal relationships in hunter-gatherer cosmology in southern Africa. South African born and raised, her professional background spans twenty years of experience in educational film and media, communications, and business development relations. Chantal is also the co-founder of the educational non-profit, the Deep-Water Initiative. She received a B.A. in film production from the internationally award-winning film school AFDA in South Africa and an M.A. in Middle Eastern History from Tel-Aviv University, where I studied the evolution of modern media in the Middle East.
