“We're all salespeople at the end of the day.”Whether you're pitching a movie, an idea, or yourself, persuasion is about more than the story you're telling—it's also about the story your audience sees for themselves. For Deadpool and Zombieland screenwriter Rhett Reese, that means keeping communication concise, compelling, and centered on what your audience needs. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Reese joins Matt Abrahams to share lessons from screenwriting that apply far beyond Hollywood. From cutting unnecessary words to crafting pitches that make your audience the protagonist, he explores how storytelling, collaboration, and clarity can make any message more persuasive.Takeaways:Every pitch tells two stories. You're selling the idea itself, but you're also showing your audience how saying yes can solve their problem, reduce their risk, and lead to their success.Brevity makes your message stronger. Cutting unnecessary words and choosing them carefully helps your ideas land with greater clarity, impact, and memorability.Activity:Tell the second story. Take a pitch you're currently working on and write one sentence describing the idea you're selling. Then write a second sentence from your audience's perspective: “If I say yes, what becomes possible for me?” Use that second story to reshape your pitch around their success, not just your idea.Printable Expanded Takeaways & ActivitiesEpisode Reference Links:Rhett ReeseEp.167 Hollywood Lessons For Successful Communication Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedIn Chapters:(00:00) - Introduction (01:18) - Make Every Word Count (03:09) - How to Pitch an Idea (07:38) - Creatively Collaborating (10:35) - Creating Space for Feedback (12:49) - AI & the Future of Hollywood (16:44) - The Final Three Questions (23:15) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost.Strawberry.me. Cartoonist Fran Sundblad, creator of Tiff & Eve, joins Brad for a wide-ranging conversation about creating character-driven comics, finding an audience on Reddit, and learning when not to chase the algorithm. Fran traces Tiff & Eve from its beginnings in her sketchbook to a comic that regularly reaches thousands of readers. She explains how Tiff and Eve represent two very different impulses — Tiff as the superego and Eve as the id — and shares a terrific character-development exercise: Lock your character in a room and ask what they do next. If you don't know the answer, you probably don't know the character well enough yet. Fran and Brad also talk about finding humor in the characters themselves rather than building every strip around a traditional punchline. That approach has helped Tiff & Eve explore Fran's experiences as a trans woman while remaining first and foremost a funny comic about two friends. In this episode: How Tiff & Eve grew out of Fran's sketchbook Writing two characters as opposing parts of your own personality Fran's “locked room” test for determining whether a character is fully developed Character-driven humor vs. setup/punchline comedy Using comedy to make personal experiences relatable What happens when readers interpret your comics differently than you intended Why Fran refuses to explain a joke Surviving hostile comments, Reddit Cares abuse, and the stranger side of online audiences Why cartoonists should post comics to their Reddit profile, not only to individual subreddits Learning the culture of each subreddit instead of treating Reddit as one giant audience Formatting comics differently for different communities — including designing images so Reddit's mobile crop doesn't hide important information Why fewer clicks usually means more readers The danger of chasing trends, politics, and viral Reddit “meta” events simply for upvotes Why a huge viral hit may produce surprisingly few new followers or Patreon supporters Why effort and artistic complexity don't necessarily translate into social-media success The value of clarity, brevity, and consistency on Reddit Knowing when a topical comic is nevertheless necessary because it's true to the characters Sunday Comix, a webcomic collective and email newsletter designed to help cartoonists reach readers without depending entirely on social-media algorithms Fran's experience offers an especially useful reminder for cartoonists trying to build an audience online: don't confuse attention with audience growth. A trendy comic might earn tens of thousands of upvotes, but the work that builds a lasting readership is the work that gives people a reason to come back for your characters. The Mountain Music Festival 2026 is almost here, and this week we're breaking out the map, studying the schedule, and figuring out exactly how we're going to tackle three days of rock and roll in Gatlinburg! In this episode, Chris and Aaron map out The Mountain, running through the entire three-day festival schedule and sharing the bands and performances we're most looking forward to seeing. With multiple stages running throughout the weekend, there are plenty of tough decisions to make. We break down the biggest overlaps, which acts are playing more than once, and how those second sets might help us avoid sacrificing one band for another. We also discuss Punchlines and Backlines, the comedy shows taking place on multiple nights during festival week featuring comedians and familiar faces from the rock world. Between the bands, comedy, clinics, late-night activities, and everything else happening around the event, there's going to be a lot to keep up with. And we're not just coming to watch. Decibel Geek will be roaming The Mountain all weekend recording video and audio, talking with fans, capturing some man-on-the-street insanity, and gathering plenty of material to bring back to the show and our social channels. Whether you're joining us in Gatlinburg or following along from home, this episode is your preview of what promises to be a very busy weekend. Who are the must-see bands? Where are the toughest schedule conflicts? And exactly how much rock and roll can two aging podcasters cram into three days? We're about to find out.

Dave Kellett returns from his first-ever college reunion with a full heart — and a renewed appreciation for old friends, running jokes, and the occasional listener washing dishes through the cold open. From there, Brad and Dave dig into one of the trickiest parts of writing comics: how much work should the reader have to do to “get” the punchline? Using Brad's motorcycle-jump-over-a-ravine metaphor, they discuss why wider joke “canyons” can create bigger laughs, why shorter jumps can feel merely “technically funny,” and why the best cartoonists learn how to build strong launching ramps while understanding that every reader brings a different landing ramp. Also in this episode: How to show music in a silent medium, why semi-realistic comics should still embrace comics iconography, a quick San Diego Comic-Con update, Bluesky's expanded image carousel, and why obsessing over analytics can become a form of creative procrastination. Topics covered in this episode include: Writing punchlines that require inference from the reader Brad's “motorcycle jumping a ravine” metaphor for humor Why wider joke gaps can produce bigger laughs The difference between “funny” and “technically funny” Why some jokes land for one reader and miss for another How audience literacy, life experience, and context affect comedy Why “it took me a second” can be a feature, not a bug The danger of making every joke too obvious Why memorable comics often take bigger comedic swings Why being someone's “top three cartoonist” matters more than broad mild approval The difference between newspaper-era comics and webcomics-era audience building Dave's San Diego Comic-Con booth update The free ComicLab pin for listeners at Booth 1228 Bluesky expanding post image limits from 4 images to 10 How the new Bluesky carousel can help sequential artists How to communicate piano music in comics Why floating music notes are not “too cartoony” for semi-realistic comics Using established comics iconography instead of reinventing the wheel Why comics can suggest music but rarely reproduce the experience of music How manga and anime use visual language more freely Using musical notation as a visual “spice,” not the whole dish Why analytics can become creative avoidance Whether it matters how quickly a comic reaches its maximum views Why “magic number” thinking can distract from improving the next comic Why creators should spend less time dusting bookcases and more time making better comics What's better? A simple gag or one that requires the audience to think? UPDATE: Comic-Con International booth 1228 Update: Bluesky update... 10 images per post! This week on Dishing It Out, Gary and Gareth welcome comedian Willa White to the studio for a chat that goes from belly laughs to brutally honest life stories and back again.Willa talks about how he first got in to stand-up, going from recovery meetings and prison to comedy workshops, Vicar Street, touring, and building a career without ever really planning to become a comedian. He opens up about his past, addiction, recovery, time in prison in Ireland and the UK, and how comedy became part of a very different life.Food-wise, there's plenty to get stuck into too. Willa chats about prison food, working as a butcher, growing up on simple dinners, his love of pork chops, offal and chowder (as long as it's not more than a tenner!)In this week's Nespresso Dish of the Week, Gareth guides you through how to properly pan-fry fish at home without fear. Then it's over to your Culinary Conundrums, where the lads explain mise en place and what it actually means for home cooks.Keep those questions coming to food@goloudnow.com .

There's a strong, hidden connection between comedy and clarity. When communicating, there's a fundamental difference between your point (the “what”) and the payoff (the “so what”). The intentional structure and sequence of clarity needs to take a critical cue from joke telling: start strong, and always end with a laugh. Listen up, yo.
