I'm your host, Melissa Oliveri.In this holiday special edition of the podcast, you get a little behind the scenes information about the Skylark Bell creator in the form of a pre-recorded Q+A.Hear about the strange way the story first came about, and the process behind writing the book, and eventually creating the podcast. If you haven't already, go grab a blanket and a warm drink… here we go.Q - How did you come up with the premise of The Skylark Bell?A – The title for the book actually came to me in a dream. I sometimes dream letters, words, and or sentences. I keep a notepad and pencil in my nightstand drawer so I can jot things down in the middle of the night. In this instance, I dreamed the words “Meadow Lane and the Skylark Bell”. I didn't know what it meant, but I filed it away for future use.Q – When did you start writing the story of Meadow Lane and the Skylark Bell.A – I believe it was sometime in 2010 or 2011. I distinctly remember sitting in my car on my lunch break with a yellow legal pad and a pen coming up with ideas for the story and character outlines. My first idea was that there would be no sound on Meadow Lane. I thought that was original. I also found the idea of stepping into a space where there is no sound very unnerving.Q – What took so long to share the book?A – My first draft of the book was completed in the summer of 2014. I was pleased with myself for finishing it, but I was quite unhappy with the ending. I put the book on a shelf and forgot about it for several years. Finally in 2019 when I started a Patreon account for my music I thought it might be fun for my patrons if I shared the story of Meadow Lane and the Skylark Bell one chapter at a time. I started posting one or two chapters per month, and the book began to make the rounds that way.Q – What made you turn the book into a podcast?A – In the summer of 2020, my friend Amy from the Collected Sounds and Volsteadland podcasts approached me with the idea of turning my book into a podcast. She was starting a podcast of her own and had done quite a bit of research on it, and she offered to help me get started. At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it. I had never really listened to a podcast before. I told her I'd think about it. And I did. I thought about it a lot. I thought “Ooooo I could compose intro music for it” and “Oooo I could compose background music for it” and “Oh! I could include sound effects!” and the more I thought about the more excited I got, so I went for it!Q – How did you decide on the format, frequency of episodes, length of episodes, etc?A – In my preparation phase, which lasted about 6 months, I realized a lot of things. One, I had to change the ending of the book to something much better than what I had originally written. That was the first thing I did, only after that was done did I fully commit to doing a podcast. Second, I realized my episodes would have to be somewhat similar in length, so I adjusted my chapters to have similar word counts. Third – After I recorded a few chapters for practice I quickly realized that each chapter needed to end on a bit of a cliffhanger. The first few fell flat – so I re-wrote most of the chapter endings. Once all my chapters were ready, I began to think about how I was going to fill up an entire year with 26 chapters. This is where Fantôme Friday comes it.  I decided that on the last Friday of each month I would pause reading of the Meadow Lane and the Skylark Bell, and instead tell a true ghost story. Well, they aren't really all ghost stories, but they are definitely supernatural in nature!Q – Are all the Fantôme Friday episodes true stories?A – Absolutely! I did my best to write the Fantôme Friday stories in an honest way without embellishing or taking too much creative freedom. The majority of the episodes cover things I experienced first-hand, and the others came to me from people I trust implicitly.Q – Where did you come up with the idea to include an original song with each Fantôme Friday episode?A – I am equal parts author and musician. Music is a huge part of my life. For my music endeavours, I go by the stage name Cannelle. When I realized what a huge undertaking the podcast was going to be – sidenote, I didn't realize how much work would be involved when I started out – I grew concerned that my music would fall by the wayside, and that didn't seem fair to the people who have been supporting my music on Patreon and on social media, particularly Instagram. My initial plan was to use existing songs and recordings to go with the Fantôme Friday episodes. I got this idea in my head because the first Fantôme Friday is about Jack's Room, and I already had a song written about that. That is the only Fantôme Friday for which I had a song that fit. I found myself having to compose a new song each month. I'll be honest, some months were easier than others! But the wonderful thing is doing that helped me keep my music and my writing closely intertwined, and in doing so I ended up creating a soundtrack for the podcast called Songs from The Skylark Bell!Q – How do you think being a musician affects how you approach the podcast?A – I am very in tune to how sounds make people feel. I felt it was important for the spoken intro and outro to have a different feel than the story itself. That's why there is no background music for the intro and outro, but while I am reading the story there is subtle, low, rumbling music in the background. Interesting fact, that background music just a loop of the intro music but with all the high-pitched instruments muted.Q – Tell us more about the intro music, was it written specifically for the podcast?A – Well, yes and no. As I was sitting at the piano trying to come up with something new, I started playing the bridge to an original song of mine called Night. Suddenly the light came on, I'd been looking for something a little creepy, but still nice, with a theatrical edge to it – the bridge to this song fit the bill perfectly! I plugged my Roland keyboard into my laptop and began recording. I started out with piano then added a bunch of low choir sounds and strings. Then the fun began. If you listen carefully you'll notice the only percussion in the song is the sound of a heartbeat. There is also a swooshing sound that was added by my sun using a “rain” sound effect on my keyboard. At the end of the song we hear bells and birds, which are intricately woven into the story of Meadow Lane.Q – Speaking of the story – what can we expect in future seasons?A – I always knew the story of The Skylark Bell was going to be a trilogy. Book 2 is titled Wingspan and is completely written. That is what season 2 will consist of. We'll reconnect with Magpie and Lucas about two years after the end of Book 1. They have finished high school and are heading to Scotland to claim a house left to Magpie by her great-great-grandfather James Carnifex. Of course mysterious occurrences and visions and clues are all part of the story. Q – Will we get an answer to the question on everyone's lips after the season 1 cliffhanger – Who is Farfalla?!A – Yes! I don't want to give too much away, but about 1/3 of the way through book two that question will be answered.Q – You mentioned The Skylark Bell is a trilogy, what will the third book be about?A – The third book starts out as a bit of a prequel, and follows Farfalla's timeline. Part of it takes place at Meadow Lane, and part of it takes place in Scotland. I don't want to give too much away, but all three books are very tightly intertwined, and all major characters make appearances in all three books. Q – Are there plans to publish the story in book form?A – Yes! This is something I've wanted to do for a very long time. I am waiting to complete the third book, then will revise all three books to ensure there are no errors or omissions I the story, then I will send the books for publication. I am hoping to have at least one of the books available by the summer of 2022 in both printed and e-book format as well as an audiobook version.Q – Are there plans for any other physical or digital merchandise related to The Skyarl Bell?A – Yes. The soundtrack is currently available on Bandcamp. You can visit www. Theskylarkbell . com for more information on that. I also offer goodies to Patreon patrons such as ornaments and bookmarks. I am hoping to put together an online shop in the near future where anyone can purchase The Skylark Bell merch, and eventually the books!Q – As we wrap up this conversation, tell us where fans can get more information about the podcast and the music.A – The website is a great resource. You can go to www . Melissa oliveri . com to learn about everything I do. There are separate pages for my music as Cannelle, as well as The Skylark Bell podcast, and all social media links, music website links, and podcast platform links are there. Park Royal Proposal for New Micro-Unit Development

A podcast conversation with Park Royal VP Rick Amantea about the history of Park Royal and their new proposed micro-unit development. Affordable housing. It's a problem plaguing the Lower Mainland - and never more so than in West Vancouver, where mega-houses rule the land. Now, armed with a unique plan for the future, Park Royal VP Rick Amantea discusses how they are seeking approval for a new micro-unit complex designed specifically for singles. It strives to help solve the housing crisis with a tiny bit of innovation that still allows people to ‘live large'. UPDATE Oct 5, 2021 - Council approved the proposal to advance to the next steps of review and consultation. The next steps in the application process include community consultation and staff review to identify issues and technical considerations for the proponent to address.  Staff identified the following items that require further review: Traffic functionality, Number of parking stalls, Number and size of rental units, Potential community recreation uses in the current green space, Impacts to privacy and view corridors to properties north of the site. Q: Tell us a little about why you have proposed this new micro-unit development? A: As we continue to evolve, and we look at the needs of the community, we try to examine developments and bring to the table ideas and concepts that kind of meet those needs. One of those needs is to provide housing for those individuals who work in our community and do the important work of those services and those frontline jobs. And so when we were thinking about what we could do to address that, the notion of micro-units came up. We decided to try to bring something like that to West Vancouver to make it more affordable, make it more attainable, and really provide an opportunity for those people - those important people who work in our community. Q: Who would want to live here? A: The occupants are, generally speaking, those single people that want to find a more affordable means and ways of living in the community, which generally means they don't have a car. They rely on walking or cycling, or public transportation to get to and from their place of work. As such, we've designed the building for 0.25 cars per unit, and lots of bicycle parking. Q: What is the approval process for this? A: The first step is to have council consider this concept - so we need to go through a pre- application proposal. We will then go into a much more intense public consultation. We would then take it forward to the community and see what they think - and then they'll consider it at that stage of the game for the rezoning and the development permit that would be required. Q: In addition to the micro-units, what else is going to be unique about the property? A: There are a couple of unique things that we're proposing. One is that the six-storey building would be built all from wood frame. So that is a more environmentally sensitive means of construction. All 199 [units] will be rental units. We'll have a rooftop garden on top of the building with a little amenity space up there that could be converted into a community dining room. There will be a collaborative workspace. And [instead] of an indoor fitness amenity, we have proposed putting outdoor adult exercise equipment on the front lawn of the building. So those people who want to get exercise can do it literally on the front lawn. Q: How much will each unit cost per month? A: I think the goal here is is is to bring a compact, high quality living accommodation to this community that would be about 2/3 the size of a studio or a one-bedroom - and by virtue of that, the rent should be two thirds. So if your average rent for a one-bedroom unit is $1,800 a month, you'd be looking at $1,200 a month. That's just simple math. The new proposed six-storey building located just off of Taylor Way will house 199 rental micro-units of approx.

Indian market might have hit $3 trillion with respect to market cap and is on the verge of hitting record highs, but Nikhil Kamath, one of India's youngest self-made billionaires remains cautious and remain 60% hedged in his fund, he told us in a D-Street Talk podcast. Kamath who is also a Co-founder and CIO, True Beacon and Zerodha said that we are not adding significant long positions at this point in time, and are ensuring that we have sufficient hedges at play each time we add a longer build on our Long's. Edited excerpts:- Q) We are on the verge of crossing previous record highs, and the star performers are mid & smallcaps which touched record highs. BSE Mcap touched $ 3 trn mark. Does the euphoria make you cautious or bullish at current levels? A) We continue to remain cautious. As a fund, we have in fact increased our hedging component from 50% to 60%. There is a lot of pain on the ground, and stock prices have not been reflecting the actual pain for a long time. We have continued to remain hedged. But, we continue with our conviction of prices being expensive, and we will retain hedges of 50% to 60% in the foreseeable future as well. Q) What is the kind of COVID impact you have seen on the AIF industry? A) Last month was bad. April, March was very slow, but May seems to be a lot better for us. Investors are not keen on investing at this point in time. Investors are coming in May, but they didn't come in April as well as March. But, if you were to look at the market activity and how the rally has continued, people are bullish. I think they're (investors) are looking beyond the pandemic. They are considering a scenario where we are Corona-free. And, if we were to mimic the West in a certain way, where they're seeing increased consumption after opening up, investors could be playing that theme.Q) Tell us more about First Operational Hedge Fund for Strategic Global Investors in India. A) It went live about a fortnight ago now. True Beacon Global, it's a fund based out of GIFT City in Gujarat. It has favorable taxation and is very attractive for foreign investors looking to invest in India. It removes the middlemen in many ways such as countries that are generally sitting in between like Singapore or Mauritius or Luxembourg. Traditionally, foreign investors picked to come into the country through these feeder vehicles, which were these countries. But, now the government has done away with the inefficiencies around them coming in directly. Going forward, they should bring a lot more foreign institutional money into India, and directly.Q) Any ballpark number that you have in mind? A) In our fund, we're expecting say Rs 1,000 crores to start off within the next 6 to 12 months. But, as an industry, we are the first fund to be operational in GIFT City. Slowly more people will come in there and replicate and start their own funds. So, as a jurisdiction, I think it will bring many billions of dollars into the public equity ecosystem in India.Q) Re-opening of economies in western countries are lifting hopes of global economic recovery. In India as well, fall in cases has also lifted sentiment of gradual opening up of states. How should one play the unlock trade? A) If you were to follow patterns globally, hotels are doing very well, travel is doing well, restaurants are doing well. Consumer spending is doing well. I would expect a lot of the same to be mimicked in India. So, buying domestic businesses which are in these sectors could be a good idea. Consumer spending which has artificially stayed low because of the pandemic and stores being shut -- I think there will be a significant spike. So, you could think of anything from a PVR because people will want to go to the movies more. In the restaurant chain, people might go back and favor auto companies and buy a lot of automobiles. So, all of these sectors I think can be played in a post-pandemic trade. Q) What is your investment mantra during turbulent times like these? What is the secret formulae which you use while picking stocks even when there is uncertainty? A) Well, we continue to hold a capital preservation outlook. We are focused on the fact that even today, even with the pain on the ground markets are frothy at 40 times multiples. We are not adding significant long positions at this point in time. We are ensuring that we have sufficient hedges at play each time we add a longer build on our Long's. And, I guess for us as a fund where capital preservation is the most important criteria we will continue to invest in that manner. Hello everyone and welcome to episode 89, where today we talk about how to be a better observer of people. In last week’s episode, Get Them to Say "Thank You for Asking"  I talked about the ORA principle of deepening our relationships with people - Observing - Remembering - Asking. Today we’re going to examine in more detail the first component, O - observing. It’s about how we can understand people better by noticing the clues they give us about what they are experiencing. This is all for the purpose of deepening our relationship with the important people in our life. Last week I tried to make the point that the ORA principle is based on the premise that you actually care. If you don’t really care, it will come across as manipulation. It’s important to be honest with yourself, to do a gut check and ask yourself, do I really care about that person and want to have a deeper relationships with them. Or do I just want to relate someone to get something from them. Do I want to use them to meet my needs? If the later is the case, you may as well stop this recording now and listen to one of those ubiquitous crime podcasts instead. But if you want to deepen your relationship with someone, keep listening. The myth of Ice breaker exercises These rarely ever work. They almost never lead to anything. And they’re often used when there is no ice to be broken. Here’s an example: Q: “Tell the group something about yourself most people don’t know.” A: I typically answer with one of 3 responses I have two birth certificates with two different names Years ago I was a panelist on a TV show I once sat in front of a presidential candidate on an airplane. People rarely ever follow-up on the answers people give, even though its purpose is to help people get to know each other better The power of “bubbles” The SYIS (Sharpening Your Interpersonal Skills) concept. Air bubbles that rise to the top of a calm lake reveal life underneath. Look for the bubbles. What clues are people giving off? With their words? Their actions? Where is the life? Where is the danger? Be a detective. As in the old TV show, “Monk.” It was about a private detective with an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Played by award-winning actor,Tony Shalhoub, who is from Wisconsin, by the way. He solved crimes by noticing clues others missed. He could follow the bubbles. Three examples of observing The " A poem is everywhere” story from college [no transcript available]. I mentioned in episode 87 to look for emotion. What do you think people are feeling? What are they happy about? Sad about? Worried about? Look for the emotion. The poem I wrote is about the emotion I saw in the moment. Later when I taught creative writing: field trips to the airport and the zoo. Write something about the people. It was all about exercise our curiosity muscles. Good writers are good observers of people. More recently, a Christmas party at a friend’s house, and looking around his den. Be tentative in your observations To be open to the possibility you’re mistaken. Think to yourself, “I wonder if…” Caution on body language. Misinterpreting it. Arms folded means I’m closed off to you, when it could simply mean “I’m cold.” It’s a skill, and like any skill, it takes practice and repetition. If you forget everything else, here’s the one thing I hope you remember from today’s episode Our relationships deepen as we become better observers of the important people in our life. It gives us important data for relating well with them. Here are a few ideas for how we can respond to today’s program Ask God to help you be a better observer of people. Ask him to help you be more curious about others, not to be nosy, but to better appreciate what God is perfecting in the character of the people he created. As I mentioned last week, being a keen observer of people is a skill, and like any skill, it takes practice and repetition. Read good literature. Poems, short stories, novels. pay close attention to character development. How do people change? Watch good movies with a critical eye. Use the same principles of reading good literature. Look for the emotion, in the characters, and in yourself in response to the movie. Study George Bailey the main character in It’s a Wonderful Life! Notice how is wife Mary responds to George’s anger and fear husband. Check out episode # 45 Seven Relationship Lessons from the Best Christmas Move Ever Made. Learn from people who observe well Lars and the Real Girl, that wonderful Ryan Gosling movie. Study the characters. Notice how everyone relates to Lars, and his bizarre behavior. One person relates to him differently than all the other characters, which eventually leads him to more healthy relationships. This person who relates differently to Lars is a doctor. She observes things about Lars that others in the film miss. She took in data that’s revealed in the first few minutes of the movie that helped her understand Lars in ways that the other characters did not. They had the same data she had, but her keen observation skills saw the connection between that data and Lars’ behavior. Everyone else missed it. For me, observing how the doctor related with Lars, gave me a powerful insight into human behavior that has helped me in relating to people. So observing the skills others use in relating to people, be it fictional or in real-life, is another thing we can do to apply what we’ve learned in today’s episode. As always, another thing you could do is let me and your fellow listeners know what resonated with you about today’s episode. You can share your thoughts in the “Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the show notes. Or you can put your thoughts in an email and send them to me, john@caringforothers.org. Closing I hope your thinking was stimulated by today’s show, to both reflect and to act. So that you will find the joy God intends for you through your relationships. Because after all, You Were Made for This. That’s all for today. See you next week. Goodbye for now. You Were Made for This is sponsored by Caring for Others, a missionary care ministry. Episode 016 – Unleashing the Power of Happiness – Interview with Christina Unrein, Professional Happiness Coach Christina’s goal is to have people find their own happiness, and get to it a little bit faster on their own! Q – Who is your ideal client? A – People who are a little weird, with quirks, people who want to be themselves, and also the workaholics and people pleasers. Also I like working with people who want to be courageous and like to be with themselves – no matter what that looks like. Happiness is a Continuous Choice. We have to stick with it! Q – What experiences have you had at Trade Shows? A – I’ve experienced just about every situation there is at shows. Being an exhibitor behind the booth, in front of the booth, walking around shows, and more. Q – Do you see Happiness missing at Trade Shows? A – I believe it has to be intentional for it to show up. It can’t be forced. You shouldn’t say, “We’ll just play music or have an ice cream social.” It has to be intentional for the attendees. Should create a more personal environment rather than a “salesy” environment. But its rare, especially in business because people are so focused on the results – getting badges scanned or business cards. Rarely do people create an environment to just have conversations – but in reality that is where happiness naturally comes out. Q – How do you create the right environment for happiness? Especially in industries that are more “serious” like medical, legal, insurance, etc.? A – Think about your audience and how overwhelmed they are. What are they experiencing at the show – long days, bad food choices, etc.  Now think about what would give them energy and what would make them curious. Then let them care about what they care about. Let them tell you by asking them questions. Get curious about them! Ask them how best you can support them, because the answer might not be you! It might be you connecting them with someone else at the show.  Be a Servant! Find out how you can help them, and they will remember it and may even refer others to you because you made them happier in some way. Q – How do you get past the “I’m here to work, I’m here for my company, and I’m here to get results” mindset? A – Start thinking I’m here to have fun, to meet people and add quality and energy to their lives. I’m here to learn and to grow. There’s all sorts of ways to change your mindset and to be intentional.  One thing is to be Authentic so people get a good idea of who you really are. Also – be curious! And if the show is slow, meet the people in the other booths and find out how you can add value to them. You already know what you know. Give yourself a chance to learn from others by being curious, asking questions, and then being silent to hear what they have to say. Q – Tell us about your book! A – The book is titled – The Happiness Workbook: Rise Up Happiness Soldiers!  LINK:  (https://www.amazon.com/Happiness-Workbook-Rise-Up-Soldiers-ebook/dp/B074CPNQGL) NOTE: You can get the Kindle version for FREE!! One thing to know – I don’t like writing! So instead of copy heavy, it has a lot of exercises. I took the concept in each short chapter and tried to apply it in the 5 ways most people learn: (1) By doodling, drawing or creating. (2) By movement. (3) By visualizing. (4) By speaking aloud. (5) By tearing the concept apart and rebuilding it.  You can do as much or whatever you want, in whatever order you want. Q – What do you say to those who are more reserved or intimidated by approaching others? A – Identify things that you enjoy or bring you happiness. For those who enjoy working with their hands or building things, Choose to bring those types of things into your booth and you...

Happy New Year and thanks for joining me for the first Crosspoint podcast of 2020. Today, we’re focusing on the topic of personal transformation with my guest, Col Darren Duke, United States Marine Corps. Col Duke is the Deputy Director of Operations at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps in Washington, DC. He is a career intelligence and special operations officer and has commanded Marine and Joint special operations in garrison and abroad. Col Duke he will be speaking on the topic of personal transformation at the upcoming Northeast Academy & ROTC Retreat, on 7-9 February at the Toah Nipi Retreat Center in New Hampshire. And for those of you in ROTC, there are upwards of 9 different events you can take part in between now and April. Click here for details.  Let’s jump into my conversation with Col Darren Duke as we talk about personal transformation and what a life transformed by God might look like for believers serving in the military. // What we talked about Col Duke expresses about his gratitude for the heritage of faith from his family, making that faith his own through USNA OCF, led by Cal & Linda Dunlap, and the influences from his roommate and many others helping him see “the prevailing unbelief in my life.” "Through the pages of the Bible I met a God who was utterly holy, completely powerful and sovereign, yet who extended mercy to sinners like me." Q: Tell me about the OCF conference you're speaking at and the topic for the conference. Col Duke talks about really enjoying the ROTC conference he spoke at last year at WSS, and how important weekend conferences were to him as an USNA midshipman both in his walk with Christ and to be with other believers to study God’s Word. To him, there’s not a better topic than personal transformation “because the gospel of Jesus Christ is at its core about transformation.” "Come be transformed from a rebel against the sovereign King of the cosmos to a son of the Living God. Come, and look at Jesus Christ, and you will be changed. Life from death is the height of transformation." Col Duke discusses the importance of personal transformation, particularly to the audience he’s speaking to. Col Duke talks about trusting God in His promises and obeying His commands, faith and repentance, and the necessity for new Christians growing in their faith to live it out.   "Faith and repentance are two sides of the same coin, distinct, but inseparable attributes of living faith in Jesus. You can’t have one without the other." "Young Christians who are growing in their faith need to understand what it is to walk in Christ in the way they live, not just in what they believe in inside their minds and hearts." Col Duke talks about the influences of the American culture that offers transforming philosophies or transforming programs to try teach others how to transform themselves, and he also discusses “heady” theological words that can be difficult concepts to grasp and that transformative changes comes from “faith in Jesus, where He changes us from the inside out.” "A life changed by God is one where a believer acts on new affections, that is, the inclination of the will of the heart. One law of human worship is that you become like what you worship (Psalm 115). Thankfully, the opposite is also true: the more we behold the perfections of Christ and rejoice in them, the more we will become like Him (1 Corinthians 3:18)." Col Duke talks further about the concepts of justification and sanctification, the danger of “pseudo-holiness” because of our sin nature, false alternatives for true transformation, and the false sense of personal transformation in thinking God loves us less or more depending on our performance. Q: What should be our standard of measure when it comes to personal transformation? Seems like it could be pretty easy to compare ourselves to others and either come away with a bad case of imposter syndrome or walk away thinking more highly of ourselves than we should. Col Duke says the standard for measuring personal transformation rests in the vital necessity of using God’s Word “to see what God says about both our heart and actions.” "Comparison with others is a sure-fire recipe for disaster. It’s difficult to love someone if you’re comparing yourself with them. You’ll either idolize those you uphold as the standard or look down at those you deem as inferior." Col Duke talks about the specific applications and implications of personal transformation for Christians serving in the military. Col Duke’s conversation touches upon the “affections” based on Christ’s promises and how they show themselves in our responses to our fears, family life, and careers. He also talks about how military Christians will appear differently, because of the way their hearts are oriented toward God. "In combat, Christians will remember that even our enemies are created in God’s image, which is the basis for humane treatment of prisoners of war. We will pray for our enemies even as we do our combat duties, to include use of lethal force for righteous ends." Col Duke discusses the “very serious business” that the profession of arms is when asked about the most important thing for newly commissioned officers to keep in mind as they transition into their careers. He also talks about the challenges nonbelievers face in combat in trying to “measure the violence they’re seeing around them,” and the ways they try to put value on what they’ve seen and experienced “that persists beyond the memorial service after the deployment is over.” "Norse paganism has become the symbols of what many young soldiers or Marines use because the culture is questioning the value of war itself right now, and yet they need some framework to place the loss of their friends, and all the death and destruction they’ve seen around them. In Norse mythology…you can have merit, and the sacrifice in combat, and hope beyond that death—even for the person you killed in combat." Col Duke and Josh discuss young Christian officers’ opportunities to demonstrate the hope they have in Christ, the portrayal of war in today’s video games or movies, Global War on Terror “brov-ets,” and books Col Duke recommends on personal transformation. // Resources God is the Gospel by John Piper https://www.desiringgod.org/books/god-is-the-gospel Future Grace by John Piper https://www.desiringgod.org/books/future-grace Redemption Accomplished and Applied by John Murray https://www.amazon.com/Redemption-Accomplished-Applied-John-Murray/dp/080287309X The Christian’s Great Interest by William Guthrie https://www.amazon.com/Christians-Great-Interest-Puritan-Paperbacks/dp/0851513549 // Final Point Col Duke’s one key takeaway for listeners today "The Bible is clear that we are transformed, our lives are changed not by self-help books and gurus—even by Christian ones—but by seeing Jesus Christ as He is presented in the Scriptures, resting in His promises to be the righteousness and peace with God that we need. He will do what He has promised. He will bring us to God, and we will marvel and delight forever."   // Special Announcement We just launched a separate podcast called “Leader, Draw Near.” It’s a weekly podcast devotional, and if the title of that podcast sounds familiar to you, it’s because the podcast is based on the book by the same name, written by COL Larry and Bobbie Simpson, United States Air Force, retired. The Simpsons published the book a few years ago, and since then, we’ve recorded each weekly devotional using several different narrators from all branches of service, and now we’re distributing the audio content as a weekly podcast.  Each podcast episode averages around 4 minutes, so it’s a quick and simple way to get your day started with a great leadership devotional centered on God’s Word. Losing Your Religion    Melissa Perez - Writer, author of “Living Loved”, Mom   Topic: Religion & Spirituality - How are they the same? How are they different? Q:  What was your religious up-bringing? What was that like for you?    A:   First I want to pray for everyone that may be watching this I was raised Christian, but very religious - structured, traditional, black + white  There was an emphasis on sin-consciousness - the idea that there is something wrong with us I felt an underlying tone of believing that I was broken, so I wasn't able to receive the idea that “God Loves You”  I was able to open to receiving love outside of my experience with religion   My experience was very much a roller coaster ride, I would only let myself feel love if I believed I did something “good” and was deserving of it    Q:  Do you think there are religions in the world that celebrate more wholeness?    A:   I think there are people in every religion that understand the truth.  Truth is universal. Religion is their way of having structure and connecting to their truth   Q:  What was your transition out of religion and into spirituality?    A:  I was hurt and offended.  I didn't feel seen there.  This led me to a place of questioning  A mentor entered my life at exactly that time This woman was strong, spiritual, and aware.  She was free in her beliefs  She was ok with mystery.  I loved that. Certainty can create boundaries, exclude, isolate I believe religion has its place, it's not be judged, it's just to be learned from    Q:   Can you explain how you are merging the masculine energy of religious structure and institution with the feminine energy of spirituality?    A:   I was an addict for a number of years, and religion was part of my healing.  It was almost extreme.  Like a pendulum, I left religion and went completely the other way It's healthy to have balance  Religion provides structure, tangible tools to practice our spirituality, ways to take action and ground our spiritual energy   I aim for a “sweet spot” between both sides: masculine + feminine energy    Q:  How are you integrating this with your boys?    A:  As a child, I didn't get to choose what I believed, I was told what to believe  Now, at 35 I am choosing and creating my own religion.  I'm bringing in non-dual thinking  I've found freedom in this.  With my children, I didn't want to tell them what to believe - I want them to grow curious about it  I live it out in front of them: for example, they see me meditate every morning or expressing gratitude  I want the energy of my life to be what moves them    Q:   I can imagine how hard it would be to step outside of your religion if you were really programed.  Do you have any tips that you can share?   A:  Children know.  It's really important that we create an environment that extracts this knowledge out of them, instead of trying to plant things in them  It's not about fear.  Notice if you're feeling that it is about fear.  Any book will be reflective of where you're at in your life.  If you are in fear, you will feel the fear in the story, scriptures, or teachings  Check your heart, do some inner work  I don't think texts are meant to be read literally, it's a compass to reflect back how you are feeling  Do not fear questioning  I've created my own religion in a sense; my own connection to the divine  If your religion causes you to live in fear, exclusion, separation from others, I would say it's time to re-evaluate  True religion always allows for more love and expansion  If you're not experiencing love, it's time to re-evaluate  Q:   Are we living in fear or love?  For anyone listening, check in - be really honest with yourself.  Are you motivated by fear or love?  How were you able to step out of the religious framework and open yourself up to love? How can others connect to their heart more?    A:    I am blessed with a husband who loved me, even when I didn't love myself  He was the example of divine love  Now it's my children, seeing how much these other people love me has led me to learn to love myself  I have to check in with myself and my heart every single day  Now my giving comes from a place of wholeness, not a lack in me that needs to be filled from giving to others  Practice being aware of the love inside.  I'm very aware of the divine presence that's with me  Q:  What would you say to women who may not have the love outside of themselves?    A:  The fact that you're alive right now is proof of God's desire for your existence  Start with that  Right now, you have the complete acceptance of the divine.  You are loved right now, and you exist right now because divinity saw a place for you in this world  Let this thought guide you.  How can you begin to express what's inside of you that wants out?  Divinity is not a superior being: God has created equals, other forms & expressions of source    Q:   Divine Love/Source/Oneness/God - Are they the same?  A:   I think we should get rid of naming  “The moment you name a thing, you cease to see it”  It's something that can't be described with words, it can only be experienced  It's something that must be experienced and felt  I believe it's all the same thing, and our words fall short of really describing our experience  It's eternal, it's bigger than us  There is a feeling, experiencing a feeling of oneness. We're all experiencing it in our own ways    Q:   I encourage everyone listening to try it.  Shut your mind off, tune into your experience. Be still  For everyone listening, does the word “God” trigger something in you? Do you use this word?    A:   I realized that change comes from letting go of all the judgement we have, even towards religion  Religion is just another place where people experience the same thing that we're experiencing outside of it    Q:   Tell me about your book: “Living Loved” What is it about? Where can we find it?    A:  I think it's really targeting people who had a religion up-bringing that questioned the system  I really break down a lot of those beliefs, where they come from  I address some of the contradictions  It's also about my spirituality now.  Previously, my whole practice was based on performance.   I talk about how my heart is now into activism.  Coming from a place of freedom  Without the burden of religion, it's fun, it's a play now LINKS:   Instagram:     www.instagram.com/amomswholelife Book:  Living Loved    https://www.amazon.com/Living-Loved-Melissa-Perez/dp/1365923207

Connecting to Our Sacredness Through Nature    Elaina Cochran - Elated Earth    Works with flower & plant Essences Facilitates guided healing through nature connection   Q:  What has been your personal story, and how did you come to be more connected to nature?    A:   Over the past 10 years I've been on the path of Shamanism  The beilef in Shamanism is that everything has a spirit  This was something that I had always felt, but Shamanism gave me a language and a way of understanding it more  I was doing this on the side while I was doing my photography and portrait business  I started to shift my photography to show that we live in an artful and beautiful world This was kindof a starting point, as I used my photography to connect others to nature A few years ago I started getting intuitive messages about plant energy work  I felt a drive to connect to essences, I started to hear messages about the healing properties of plants, and when I looked it up, it always matched the messages I was receiving  I worked with my husband one day and I could see where the energy was blocked in his body and how the plants were helping him, so this led to me doing individual sessions    Q:  You mentioned experiencing nature with your heart, not your eyes.  How can everyday women make the shift from enjoying nature with the mind to feeling it with the heart?    A:   I feel like that is “the journey” for everyone… to remember that our hearts are our actual guidance system, and our brains our here to help us process what we know in our hearts  Sometimes we want to overcomplicate things… something simple like consciously being barefoot can really help you connect to nature  Remembering that there is no separation - we are a part of nature and the beauty that we see  Step into our connection to nature as a relationship, in gratitude  Be curious & conscious, connecting to everything around us    Q:  What are some other ways that you can suggest to make this connection and open ourselves up to nature?    A:   Shift your perception about what nature is   You can connect to a houseplant… Connect to your breath as you would to prepare for meditation.  Focus your gaze on the plant and explore and shifts that you feel - no matter how subtle Make yourself an empty container, and be open to what you receive.  Be curious.  You can do this with trees, or a flower - treat it as a friend.  It shifts how you are interacting with the world around you    Q:  Do you think we all have this ability to channel these messages from plants?    A:  Absolutely.  We're all intuitive, we can all open up and practice using our intuition    Q:  Does every plant have a message?    A:  Everything has its own message and vibration.  We can all communicate with our natural world.  I feel like it's a source of deep healing for our society.  Our society has become more and more disconnected from nature.   It's about shifting our understanding and perspective of what's around us    Q:  Tell me some examples of how you've worked with people, and how you've been able to use plants to heal them?    A:   A lot of people have come out of curiosity, it takes a desire and a willingness to step into the unknown  In sessions, there's a lot of clearing that can happen.  A lot of times when we have truama, pain, or negative patterns we have energetic residue left in our bodies  I can see this in people Plants want us to be in our power… so the practice is about “clearing house” or clearing out things that hold us back  When we operate under the understanding that we can keep our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies healthy - we can clear old energy  I had a woman who worked with me and it changed her physical experience, her chiropractic adjustments were different & had to happen a lot less often  I've had a lot of people have emotional releases    Q:  How does emotional trauma affect our physical body?    A:  Even though something happens in one body, it can have an effect on all others (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual)   Q:  Do the flower/plant essences treat all levels?    A:  Yes, they can treat all levels. It may not be an immediate effect, but it can be a gentle and powerful modality    Q:  Does someone have to be conscious for them to work?    A:  No, but I feel that they are more powerful when you are conscious and participating actively.    Q:  What are some common plants that you use, and their benefits?    A:  Cedar:  I have a real connection to cedar.   It's grounding - Tree energy helps you ground and be present in the physical, practice rooting in confidence Heart medicine, connecting to ancestoral medicine  We are in our highest place of power when we use our entire energetic system, the tree shows this truth.  PokeBerry (A medicinal herb/weed)  A lot of people stay away from this because you have to know how to work with it.  It's great for clearing energetic stagnation Red Clover - Beautiful, gentle for working with anxiety and calming your nervous system  I probably have 40 or 50    Q:  What's the difference between essences & essential oils?    A:   Essences are just a vibration, you're not using the plant material - we're working with the vibration of the plant to bring ourselves back into balance & healing  An essential oil is a very concentrated version of the extracted plant oils    Q:  How do you bottle vibration?    A:   There have been studies that show how water will change form in response to a particular vibration (Dr. Masura Emoto) He captured under a microscope that vibration effects water Using this understanding, we use the idea that water will capture vibration Bringing in a plant allows the water to capture the vibration and act as a conduit for people to work with it    Q:  Can you open to the vibration  of nature without the essences?    A:  Yes, the essences are like a way to learn and start to become open to the experience    Q:  If people want to learn more and work with you, how can they do that?    A:   I do healing sessions where I make a personal blend for my clients, it's tailored to whatever healing they're doing at the time  I offer remote sessions as well  I'm also offering a Virtual Circle:  At the Beginning of Each Month  Starting this Sunday Can join for one month or multiple months  I'll be highlighting a specific plant/essence  Discuss the properties of that essence, how to deepen your relationship with the plant  Giving guidance on how to continue to work with the essence for the remainder of the month  To help bring people back to the understanding that we can be in relationship with our natural world  Introducing people to the potential, create community around going deeper and exploring the natural world Once you have this connection, you can really live in your truth, and help with healing others and healing the planet    Q:  It sounds like a really sacred container to do the inner work and leverage what's available in our external world.    A: Once we cross through the threshold of personal healing, there's always a gift that we can share with others.  LINKS:    Instagram:  www.instagram.com/elated_earth   Website: https://www.elatedearth.com/   Virtual Circle: https://www.elatedearth.com/workshops-1/december-essence-circle-datura/

With our design team, has recently launched projects including Georgia Tech’s Workforce of the future and Emory University’s Goizueta School of Business. Pro Project Pick Open Source Design Animation Tool - Airbnb Lottie Animation Inspiration - Motion Corpse Interview Q: Tell us about yourself: What is your role? A: As Creative Director at Mediacurrent, I lead the design team in brand-led engagements, website, design and user experiences by practicing empathy and behavioral science. We practice design thinking use a component-based design process to create scalable web sites for higher education, non-profit and financial services verticals. Q: Tell me a little bit about the component-based design process. A: Component based design is unique in that the design elements are reusable and scalable rather than one-off designs. Our team is versed in building well-structured design systems, this means that we design on an atomic level, viewing each component and design element as a part of a larger whole. Often we base our designs on our basic install profile, which is a set of wireframes we have created that address standard content needs. Basic components, such as heroes, cards, accordions, left/right components are already wired out. We can use them as a base, which eliminates the need to duplicate prior efforts. It's transformed our process. Brands are intimate and have personalities. We create moodboards to set the tone of the digital brand extension. We perform discovery including UX and brand audits We ask questions. There is power in knowing which questions to ask. Our digital strategists partner with our UX designers to create iterative design. We rapidly prototype and map out MVP needs for components and lay out with matrix’s. Q: What is unique about designing for higher ed? A: If you’re on a marketing team for a university there are many unique challenges. There are multiple stakeholders (often more than the corporate clients we work with) with different goals and objectives. Design needs to appeal/solve problems for a larger stakeholder audience in higher ed because there are often agendas and priorities that are duplicative or competing. We solve this by doing a deep onsite discovery engagement where we get to know an institution’s unique set of needs. We have a team of developers, strategists and designers that work together at the onsite to have an understanding of what is needed, we practice agile methodology and partner with your team to co-create a scalable solution. Agile methodology typically works well in a higher ed project because of the dynamics and evolving discussions on requirements between various stakeholders. When it comes to search technologies, universities have deep repositories of data that they need to get into their students hands, we worked with USC Libraries to create bento box search functionality. Q: What are some development challenges that you see in implementing UI design from a development perspective for higher ed? A: Often times if the Design process is not in line with development this can create problems. If designs have not accounted for realistic content flow or placement on different device sizes, this can lead to poor performance, poor accessibility and poor user experience.  As you know our team of developers is brought into design discussions early to be able to identify potential problems. Solving these early on is a win-win for everyone, including clients. Q: What is your team studying right now? Our design and strategy teams are leveling up in psychology and persuasion certifications We learn and grow together. Importance of cross pollination (strategy and design) Our weekly design team check in allows us to discuss how we can apply the theory we’re learning to our current projects, in content strategy, UX design and art direction. Q: What is the importance of behavioral research in data driven design? A: When we understand why and how people make decisions, it informs our UX strategy and art direction. Understanding human needs informs and desires informs our content strategy through empathy and persuasion. So, if you’re a CMO at a university and wanting to focus on lead generation, it’s important to understand how to nudge visitors to sign up to visit your campus. You have to also keep in mind that not every visitor is a prospective student - some are faculty, staff, or donors. It’s critical to understand how each of these different personas interacts with a website. What’s motivating their action? When do they typically make decisions related to actions that impact a site’s KPIs? Understanding human biases and neuromarketing allows us to make a more compelling UX that will lead to conversions. Thanks for joining us Sheree! Check out the blog post reference in this podcast: Human Centered: Brand Intimacy in Emotional Design, and stay tuned for the next episode of Open Waters.

A dream became true? A: Haha - well, I feel like I’m dreaming. I didn’t only just sign to Kompakt, I feel like I found a new home for myself and my music. The entire Kompakt team has been so wonderful. I feel extremely lucky and very excited for what will come in 2018. Q: Tell us about your selection. How did these tracks find the way to your heart once? A: This was way more fun to put together than expected. I ended up recording precisely 100 minutes for your no. 100 series which I thought was pretty cool as I didn't intend to do it. I put my set together in a way to present my journey from 1998 all the way through to my first release on Making You Dance Records (as Ańii) from early 2016. This gave me the opportunity to go back in time which brought back a ton of memories! I hope that after listening to my set that you will understand a bit more about me. Q: Which Anii projects are coming this year? A: I’m taking it slow for the time being as I am very excited about my first Kompakt 12" EP which is out in March and already working on another release for them. Right now I am doing a remix for a really cool Indie band Cults which should be out in late-January.

But what´s the story behind? A: It was the name of Vincents hidden underground rave in his hometown Ulm back in 2013. "Eins Tiefer" (german for "One Deeper"). The party location was in an old bunker, underneath the streets of Ulm! After a couple of partys the event name was used for our own music project. Q: How did you guys meet each other and how did you meet the bass once? A: We first met each other at the "Eins Tiefer" party. Nico met the bass first as he lost his heart to the music at an oldschool Hip Hop party back in 2006. Vincent fell in love with Techno when he first was brought to a student Techno party in Konstanz / Germany by his brother. Q: Tell us about your future projects. Besides music you´re running a restaurant, right? A: Yes thats true. You can find us almost every day in our little restaurant "ST.MAULI" in Berlin-Friedrichshain. We will also work together with our friend Re.You on his label Younion. Also we are working on another EP for Upon.You Records.

A fulltime job? A: Running Click Records is not a full time job but i am happy to say I can live from music. Things I do are running the label, DJing, making music, handling bookings for a few acts and assisting some other artist with managment stuff. Also I do some freelance stuff for a music company regarding A&R and discovering and pushing artists. Q: Tell us about your mix. How did these tracks find the way to your attention? A: I made a choice with this mix to only select music i have on vinyl. I stopped buying vinyl long time ago. I think 10 years ago. I choosed to put in this mix only tracks from the beginning when I started with DJing. Tracks that defined me in that period when I discovered the world of dance music. So no disco classics or new music you will find in this mix. Strictly the music I loved when it al started for me and what is for me the foundation of everything I did since then. Q: Which projects are coming soon? A: Well I am working on lots of new original music. Got a bunch ready now. So more and more my focus will be again on releasing original music as time was short last 2 years for that which resulted in releasing lots of remixes as I am pretty fast with working on that.

I loved this invitation and this freedom to show my references without the commitment of thinking about dance floors. Electronic music for me has always been something way beyond the dance floors. I entered this universe through Trip Hop and Ambient. In this sense, the sentimental aspect always attracted me much more than simply the excitement and frenzy of beats made for the dance floors. Overt the time, I understood that in our environment there are two types of professionals: Those who stand only as DJs, whose goal is simply to bring fun to people... and the Artists, those who create a speech and aim to pass a message through music, and often, do not feel obliged to please. I identify myself a lot more with the second ones, the artists. I began this mix with the excerpt from an interview by the artist Marina Abramović, where she advises young artists. I think her speech is fantastic and I think it expresses much of what I believe as an artist. I wanted to get this message in my mix. In this one hour I chose songs that touch me deeply in the soul and that influenced me in the construction of my musical identity. It is a very introspective and intimate hour.“ 3 QUESTIONS to BLANCAh: Q) What´s the secret about the small "h" in your name BLANCAh? A) Haha good question. When I started the process of creating my new musical and visual identity, I looked for a name that represented all of this. I had been painting my hair a few years and decided to discolor it completely. Then I became BLANCAh („white“ in spanish). So far so good. So I decided to do some basic research to find out if there was anyone with this name on our circuit yet, and I met other people with that name. Letter 'H' came to set me apart from these other people, so I decided to keep it in lower case, just to lessen it´s importance in the name, hahaha. But in the end it became one of the most interesting letters in my name and the way I play with the spelling between upper and lower case gave an extra weight. Q) Tell us about the music scene in Brazil as you´re resident in the famous club D-Edge. What´s the difference to the music scene in Europe? A) Well, there are many similarities and obviously, big differences between these two scenes. Musically speaking we are very close to each other. The scene in Brazil is rich, full of very interesting and competent artists. Brazilian public is very passionate and affectionate. The energy of a full dancefloor in Brazil has the power of an atomic bomb, in a good way. Here the audience is very loyal to a club and it´s favorite artists. During my trips I realized that both, in Europe and in Brazil, there is the struggle of small nuclei who struggle to create the scene in their cities, people who do it out of sheer passion, who fight for money and give blood to see it happen. These nuclei are essential for artists like us since they enrich and educate an audience in cowtrysides of where only the radio presents the "news", which in general are commercial shit. I feel that a more pronounced difference between Europe and Brazil is that here we still do not really know the real meaning of Underground. This is a difficult subject to address in a few lines but deserves debate. Q) Which BLANCAh releases are coming soon? A) I am now working on two Steyoyoke projects. One is called „Authentic“ where I present an original song and I still select 9 songs from the label to compose a compilation. I'm working on a remix for our „Coupple Affair“ project. I'm also working on my next EP. And also traveling a lot to play and take my art further in this world.

Is there a special festival you´re really looking forward yet? What´s your favorite place? A) My festival season started already in March. I played at DGTL Festival in Amsterdam and it's always one of my personal highlights in the past years. The location, the atmosphere and the crowd from all over the world. It was amazing to be part of it again. This weekend we are celebrating the closing weekender of Shoeless and maybe it sounds a bit strange but I’m really looking forward to it. This festival is unique, started 10 years ago in Amsterdam, always like the name is telling you: People have to go barefooted. They have become more popular and bigger but it feels always intimate. They never announced a line up - it’s an overall experience. Now they have decided to close their book. With a lovely statement: Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. Q) Tell us more about your COLOURIZON series A) I was asked by an online american radio station (Proton) to create my own monthly show. This started 3,5 years ago and nowadays you can listen to my Colourizon show on various radio radio stations worldwide. In the past years I did some special events during Amsterdam Dance event and this year I found a new home in one of my favourite clubs at the moment in Amsterdam: De Marktkantine. Colourizon is about colours and horizon... two things that are important in what I do. But it's never a clear definition. I prefer that people can experience it and define it theirselves in a visual sense and let it grow from there. Look around, open your eyes and widen your horizon. You can choose it yourself. It's broad enough for that and it can go in many directions. The direction can be very open but the sound that I bring gives a certainty melodic house where I am standing for. Q) What´s coming up musicially – any releases planned for this year? A) It’s always a surprise when the next release is coming up, haha. I’m trying to spend more time in the studio besides touring and Colourizon. At the moment I’m working on a remix for Ron Flatter. After three EP’s and one collaboration with my friends Eelke Kleijn, Olivier Weiter and Arjuna Schiks it´s my first remix project. It’s an interesting experience and I’m really enjoying it. Release date? Hopefully around September. And beside this I’m working on new originals. Stay tuned ( ;

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DIE? (JAMES VAN PRAAGH)   This is THE show for anyone who ever wondered where they go after they die, who goes where within the Spirit World, and how to prepare for an easy transition to the next life.  Join CJ as James Van Praagh shares his experiences of communicating with the Spirit World for the past 30 years as a medium and reveals findings from his newest book “Adventures of the Soul” on what happens when you die. TRANSCRIPT OF INTERVIEW: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DIE? – JAMES VAN PRAAGH   Transcript Edited and condensed  Q:What happens when we die?  A: At the end of our lives we look at our lives in a life review and we see all those influences that we gave to that overall matrix of everyone. We see how we influenced the world, positive or negative.   Q: Tell us about your Near Death Experience. A: With my near death experience, I saw a ribbon that was attached at the crown of the head to what seemed like a tapestry or matrix.  And I remember that every thought was transferred to a color in that ribbon. Happy thoughts were light colors like pastels.  Angry negative thoughts had more muted and darker colors. I had this realization that when I get to the end of my life, I can look back at that tapestry and see how I influenced it, did I make it more beautiful or not. There was a multi-awareness that we are responsible for everything that we do and that we’ve done.   Q: What happens during your life review, if you were a nasty person during most of your life?  A: Most religions teach about karma and energy.  What I often say is that we are ALL God.  To me, God is the creator, which means we are the creator.  We are part of the big force of creation and that we are constantly creating with our thoughts, and our thoughts are things, so our thought is energy. So at the end of your life, you see how you used that energy. It’s not those great grandiose gestures, like giving money to a foundation that count.  Instead, it’s the things you do like opening the door for somebody, smiling at somebody, or honoring somebody.   Q: Is there a heaven or hell?  A: Yes, but it’s not religious. It’s not like a hell with fire and brimstones, and a heaven with harps and angels. It’s based on what you created in this life. If you led a decent life and you did the best you could with what you had, or at least you attempted to, that will determine your experience in the Spirit World. If you attempted to bring love and compassion, then you’ve done your job.   Q: This whole thing makes me worried. A: It’s good that people have a sense of the life review.  It’s to realize that what I give out, I get back, and that what I give out, I’ll see that again when I pass over. It forces us to stop and rethink what we do and how we respond and treat other people.  It begins the process of mindfulness. We can become mindful of our thoughts and realize that our thoughts create energy.   Q: I’m not good and loving every moment of the day, how does this register in the final analysis?  A:None of us are perfect, but you have awareness and that counts a lot.  We can change. We can take the time to become more mindful, aware, and compassionate. We have that choice and have free will to do that. We can go and help someone across the street or let them suffer on their own.  We have that ability to choose every day.  Life is a series of choices and that’s really what we are down here to learn about — choices, and all choices are either based upon love or fear.   Q: Do we continue evolving in the Spirit World? A: You bet we can. But you can also stay in a certain belief system for as long as you choose to. If you don’t want to grow, you won’t grow.   Q: Can we travel within all the realms within the Spirit World? A: You go to the level based on your thoughts and deeds, and we exist on many levels. You get to higher levels through the energy of love. There are many regions within the Astral plane and you can take tours.  My mother came through and she said that she went to the lower astral world and she said it was a shame because people are not aware there and they are living in little hovels or houses. People don’t love each other. There are different realms. It’s like here in many ways where you can go down an alleyways or into a mansion.   Q: What happens once I leave my body? What form will I take?  A: You are light. You identify more with a light being than a physical being when in the Spirit World.  We have this rule in the 3D world that we gotta be in a box and that we are limited.  We are not in the Spirit world, it’s the opposite, we are limitless.   Q: What are ghosts? How are they related to the bardo? A: Many religions have that there is a place that is purgatory or the bardo. I do believe there is an adjustment period after you die, no doubt about it. I think that every individual has a different experience. For instance, there may be one person that goes directly to the light without passing GO. And another person whose mindset is so connected to family and unfinished business that they stay close to the earth atmosphere in order to influence.  You can call these Spirits ghosts.   JAMES VAN PRAAGH- MEDIUM, NY TIMES BEST SELLING AUTHOR   James Van Praagh is considered a spiritual pioneer and one of the worlds’s most celebrated and respected spiritual teachers working today.  He has brought a mind-full awareness to the subject of “communication with the dead” into the public psyche for the past thirty years.  Mr. Van Praagh is known as a “survival evidence medium,” meaning that he provides evidential proof of life after death via detailed messages from the spiritual realms.   His work has brought spiritual insights to millions with his numerous guest appearances on such shows as Oprah, Dr. Phil, Larry King Live, 20/20, The View, The Today Show, Chelsea Lately, Beyond Belief, Biography, Coast to Coast, 48 Hours,and a multitude of others.  He is also the number one New York Times best-selling author of Talking To Heaven, Reaching To Heaven, Healing Grief, Heaven and Earth,Looking Beyond, Meditations, Ghosts Among Us, Unfinished Business, How to Heal a Grieving Heart and his soon to be released Adventures of the Soul.  In 2002 he hosted his own television show, Beyond with James Van Praagh and went on to produce one of the most watched mini-series in CBS network history; Living with the Dead, starring Ted Danson,  portraying James in a biography of his life. It gives you LOTS of ways to expand your recording knowledge, hone your recording skills, and make better recordings."   Joe offers articles, videos, podcasts, and training products so that you can start learning for free now and dive in for much more in depth training when you are ready.   Here are some of the topics we discussed on the show.   Dueling Mixes: Dueling Mixes is for users who are comfortable with their DAW and want to go deeper into what the program can do. The site offers alternate mixes of the same song so the user can compare the two and see how different a single track can be mixed. They can also download the original track to mix the song themselves. Joe and his co-host Graham Cochrane create videos on how they mix the songs to give you insights into the process.   “Home Studio Corner” & “Simply Recording” Podcast: Joe talks about the production of one of his albums from 2010. He brings up the 80/20 rule which states 80% of your results comes from 20% of the inputs given. He talked about how he was going to write 50 songs in 12 weeks to create at least 10 that he was proud of.   Predicting The Cost of a Record: Joe talks about how to plan out how long and how much time it will cost to complete a record. This goes back to knowing how long it takes you to accomplish something in order to accurately predict how long the process will take. Joe talks about the value of salesmanship when quoting a client on how much his services will cost.   Recording Advice - Q&A: Q- “What is the most important advice you have?” A - “Getting it right at the source.” Q - “What was an important failure or setback that became an important learning lesson for you in the studio or in your musical journey? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e__tu2rWRew In this episode of China Money Podcast, co-founder of Amalfi Capital, Tristen Langley, talks with our host, Nina Xiang, on Alibaba Group's US$586 million acquisition of an 18% stake of Sina's Weibo, her investment firm's winning and losing bets, and the future challenges facing China's e-commerce industry. Listen to the full-interview in the audio podcast, watch the shortened video version or read an excerpt below. Q: Alibaba Group just bought 18% of Sina's Weibo for US$586 million, valuing the Chinese twitter-like site at US$3 billion. Do you think it's a fair valuation? A: Weibo has almost 500 million users, and is still growing. Compared to Twitter and other U.S. comparable, the valuation is probably modest. But this is a very strategic alliance. So a lot of the valuation is driven by Alibaba's motivation to leverage Weibo's audience. It's estimated that 14% of Weibo's traffic is being pushed onto Alibaba's Taobao site. That sort of potential synergy makes the valuation very reasonable for Alibaba. Q: Sina expects that the new strategic alliance will generate US$380 million in extra revenue over the next 3 years. Do you think users' habits will be changed? A: Any group who communicates on a free platform and doesn't expect to be marketed to can be disengaged (when there is an effort to sell products to them). But by this alliance, Taobao has an opportunity to innovate around product discovery (among Chinese consumers). I think the ways consumers become aware of products still haven't been fully explored in China. Another thing is, Alibaba has a lot of cash. I did a quick tally of Tencent, Netease, Baidu, Focus Media, Qihu, Sina and Alibaba, there are all together US$13 billion of cash sitting on their balance sheet. Q: Where do you see as some good new venues for these companies to invest the cash? A: We've seen (misjudgment) over time. Netease, for example, was putting their cash towards pig farms in 2010. Thank goodness that Netease is now looking to develop their own content and games. So I think the cash should go into their own innovations. It's estimated that about 18% of the options from 2010 to 2012 were given to Weibo's management team as an incentive to create value in essentially a start-up within a big public company. Tencent has proven that this kind of investment (into start-ups within a big company) can have a clear internal rate of return (IRR) and be extremely advantageous. Q: Alibaba is facing competition on all fronts. How do you see China's e-commerce industry's competitive landscape evolving in the next few years? A: The offline and online worlds are going to meet in ways that present unprecedented challenges. For example, Suning Appliance bought Redbaby, an online e-commerce site for baby goods and now expanded to other products. Redbaby started from catalog services, developed into online e-commerce, to telephone ordering. This merger with Suning will present extreme challenges just integrating the back-end systems. But Alibaba and Taobao are still well ahead of the game. It's up for others to catch up, form alliances to take on the gorilla in the room. Q: Tell us some background on Amalfi Capital that you co-founded? A: Amalfi Capital is a global technology investment fund with a long-short equity strategy. Co-founder, Paul Waide, and myself founded the firm in 2010. We interview around 500 entrepreneurs, engineers and CEOs from around the world every year. We build this thematic approach to profile about 50 companies from that group. Then we choose about 20 to 30 companies that we invest in. Our portfolio has a 60% to 80% exposure in China. Q: When you were working at venture capital firm, DFJ (Draper Fisher Jurvetson), you led its investment in Skype. What was the most difficult judgment you had to make at that time? A: Back in 2003 when Skype was launched, Voice-over-IP was nothing new.
