Are cars destined to fade away, or are they turning into something even more essential to our lives and identity, and can we balance our love for cars with the pressing need to reimagine transportation systems for health, climate, and cost-of-living challenges?Today, Richard Hammond, famous for his years of motor journalism on Top Gear and then the Grand Tour, and Active Travel England commissioner Chris Boardman are our guests, in interviews I recorded at a Rees Jeffreys Road Fund debate held at the Royal Automobile Club in London.Subscribe to Highways Voices free on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts or Pocket Casts and never miss an episode!Richard Hammond discusses how we balance environmental concerns with the enduring human love for cars, and how we reimagine the car's future in an evolving transport network, balancing utility and emotional connection. He discusses what he sees are the limitations of electric vehicles and alternative energy solutions, and how he sees the future of car ownership in a world of shared mobility and environmental consciousness. Then Chris Boardman joins us to talk about how active travel options can address carbon emissions, public health, and equitable access to transport. He points to places like Cambridge and Kesgrave are leading the way in creating transport systems that prioritise people, not just vehicles. He looks at the economic and societal benefits of shifting to multi-modal transport systems, including improved health outcomes and reduced costs, before giving some practical solutions and innovative technologies, from rural design guides to data-driven cycling infrastructure, that enable transport independence and reduce reliance on cars.

One of the hallmarks of independence, particularly as you get older, is holding a drivers license and being able to drive your own car. Getting an older person to give up their wheels can be a lesson in futility, no matter how they need to stop driving. Getting older doesn't mean you automatically have to give up your independence, but it does mean you may have to take extra precautions compared with someone younger. Joining John on the podcast today is James Williams, head of policy at the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV). Operating since 1903, RACV is a motoring club offering various services to members, including roadside assistance and car insurance. Mr Williams is here to highlight some of the pitfalls of being an older driver, but also some of the positives you can only get with years of experience behind the wheel.

"It's bigger, and not only from the floor surface or the number of organisations participating, but it's definitely also bigger from summit programme perspective, from a demonstration perspective, and as well, all signs indicate that it will also be bigger from an attendee perspective."Having the biggest stand at the huge event is great kudos for SWARCO but a lot of work for the man who organises it, Richard Neumann, who admits to looking forward to midday on Tuesday when the event is up and running and he can relax, and meet the company's clients and friends: "We will look after them as they deserve because they are part of the success of SWARCO," he says. "So there is a big bistro area again on our stand where you can sit down have the meetings with our salespeople, but there is also some culinary delights and drinks from Austria."In the podcast you'll hear about SWARCO's drinks reception on Wednesday from 5-7.30pm including those culinary delights from Austria, and you'll hear what to expect from our daily podcasts and who might turn up on it.There's also our partner news from the Transport Technology Forum, LCRIG, ADEPT and ITS UK, and Adrian Tatum's pick of stories from the Highways News website, along with Adrian's Accolade going this week to the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund for its latest promise of bursaries, and a reminder you can hear from previous Bursary winners on a previous podcast recorded from the Royal Automobile Club last year - click here to listen.See you next week in Amsterdam!

We've talked a lot about electrification and sustainable energy and transformational technologies shaping the ways we move through the world on Before IT Happened. In this episode, award-winning industrial designer and co-founder of Untitled Motorcycles Hugo Eccles joins the show to talk about his creative process driven by a passion for both riding and design, talking about his family's deep connection with automobiles all the way to his current challenges designing e-bikes and trying to attract new groups of riders through innovation and conscious development. Before any world-changing innovation, there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life.  JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (02:11) - Hugo's family legacy with mechanics - “My great-grandfather was one of the founders of the Royal Automobile Club and played a big part in electrifying Britain. In fact, there's a story that he got punched by Queen Victoria. He got into a disagreement with the queen when he was installing electric lighting in Buckingham Palace.” (05:11) - Working with the design firm IDEO in the 90s - “I worked on everything from office furniture systems to mobile phones to children's toys, car interiors, medical products, you name it.” (09:57) - Establishing a booming design career - “We're not engineers. We're very ignorant about things, which I think is good in a way. We're really well-positioned to be the kind of advocate for the consumer—for the user—because they're not engineers either.” (13:17) - Hugo's decision to focus on motorcycle design - “It just started with a really innocent question. My wife asked me ‘This might be a stupid question, but you love design and you love motorcycles. Have you ever thought about designing motorcycles?' It was interesting. I think I was waiting for permission to do it.” (20:56) - Designing on trend - “I think the trouble with style is it's generally attached to fashion, and fashion is very temporary. If I had to choose function or style, I'd choose function because function never goes out of style.” (27:49) - Hugo's on the future of e-mobility (and how to attract new non-male riders) - “ I really think comparing a gas bike to an electric bike's a bit like comparing a landline to an iPhone. They both make phone calls, but the implications of the two things are so very different.” EPISODE RESOURCES: Connect with Hugo on https://www.instagram.com/hugoeccles/ (Instagram) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/hugo-eccles-92855b8b/ (Linkedin) Learn more about https://www.untitledmotorcycles.com/ (Untitled Motorcycles) Learn more about the https://www.petersen.org/ (Petersen Museum in Los Angeles) Listen to Before IT Happened's:https://www.beforeithappened.com/podcast-episodes/tapping-into-startup-culture-and-betting-on-the-future-of-mobility-with-vitaly-golomb-episode-19 ( )https://www.beforeithappened.com/podcast-episodes/smart-electric-motorcycles-and-achieving-zero-fatalities-before-2030-with-damon-founder-jay-giraud (Smart, Electric Motorcycles and Achieving Zero Fatalities Before 2030) Listen to Before IT Happened's:https://www.beforeithappened.com/podcast-episodes/tapping-into-startup-culture-and-betting-on-the-future-of-mobility-with-vitaly-golomb-episode-19 ( )https://www.beforeithappened.com/podcast-episodes/driving-the-nostalgia-of-motorcycles-into-the-ev-era-with-paul-dorleans-episode-40 (Driving the Nostalgia of Motorcycles into the EV Era with Paul d'Orleans) Thank you for listening! Police Use Sensors to Warn Drivers against Using Mobile Phones

The UK police are using a new detection system to alert motorists who use mobile phones while driving. Police departments in Thames Valley and Hampshire recently developed a new sensor with help from technology company Westcotec. In developing the sensor, the police wanted to make people more aware of the perils of simultaneously using a phone and driving. They also intended to use the sensor to pinpoint areas where there are many instances of mobile phone use among drivers. This sensor is a road-side sign showing a mobile phone in a red circle with a diagonal line across it. It detects phone signals from passing cars. Then, it flashes an LED warning sign to deter drivers from using their phones while driving. Two sensors have been installed and are currently being used on the A34 road in Oxfordshire. More sensors will be set up at different locations throughout the Thames Valley and Hampshire, where over a hundred people have died or have been critically injured since 2014 due to negligent drivers using their phones. The Royal Automobile Club showed support for the new detection system. According to a representative, the technology would help drivers be more focused while driving and discourage some from using their phones. In spite of the sensor's potential to help drivers, the device has some disadvantages. For one, the sensor cannot distinguish whether the driver or the front-seat passenger is using the mobile phone. Also, at £6,000 per unit, it is expensive.

We hope everyone is staying safe as Christmas approaches and life becomes hectic, chaotic and clouded with the insanity of shopping car park over-crowding in hot weather and high humidity. We recommend that you drink lots of water, rest in a cool shady spot and listen to something fun and entertaining, so in light of that here is our latest episode from the Nerds we all love. Please sit back, relax and enjoy that cold drink and let us entertain you.First up the Professor has news about Netflix getting involved with the Minecraft story mode. This is potentially the greatest news since Anthony Mundine was knocked out, and was silent for more than 30 seconds, not that we condone violence, but it was a teacher who took him down. Viva la Nerds!!!The DJ brings us news about the latest Bond movie changing director and a discussion about a number of things Bond related ensues. Buck the ancient Nerd is a Bond fan and has some trivia for us that is pretty cool. For example in which film did a camera man suffer an accident in which he nearly lost his life, but did lose a foot? DJ asks ‘who is everyone’s favourite Bond,’ so please send us a message and let us know, we will run a poll on Facebook also, we will let you know the results.Buck is excited about the story of Henry Sutton, a man referred to as Australia’s own Thomas Edison. The recent release of a book researched for a decade by his Great Granddaughter and recently published has him all bothered and aquiver. Trust us, this guy was a seriously cool inventor and scientist with some amazing work to his name. Also he met another of Bucks great heroes, Nikola Tesla and invented a telephone, a precursor to the television. Wow, I mean this bloke wrote a paper on heavier than air flight at the age of 14 which was later published Royal Aeronautical Journal of Britain. So grab your socks and hold on tight for the latest thrilling adventures from our Nerds.EPISODE NOTES:Netflix introduces Minecraft: Story Mode- https://www.netflix.com/au/title/80227995- https://comicbook.com/gaming/2018/11/27/telltales-minecraft-story-mode-on-netflix/- https://variety.com/2018/gaming/news/telltale-games-minecraft-story-mode-netflix-1203038125/The Life of Henry Sutton- https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-04/why-have-we-forgotten-australias-edison/10567060- https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/scienceshow/australian-inventor-henry-sutton-remembered/10594524Plans for Bond 25- https://www.empireonline.com/movies/bond-25/cary-fukunaga-talks-plans-bond-25/Games currently playingBuck- PayDay 2 - https://store.steampowered.com/app/218620/PAYDAY_2/Professor- A Gummy’s Life - https://store.steampowered.com/app/585190/A_Gummys_Life/DJ- Darksiders 3 - https://darksiders.com/Other Topics DiscussedStranger Things the TV show- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stranger_ThingsBunnings: onion goes on the bottom- https://www.news.com.au/finance/business/retail/the-humble-bunnings-snag-in-bread-is-facing-a-change-for-safety-reasons-people-are-not-happy/news-story/f7352271caf24245bd5c5b8be51abbbeMinecraft: Story Mode the game- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minecraft:_Story_ModeMinecraft achievement : 3DS Minecraft Project- https://www.planetminecraft.com/project/minecraft-nintendo-3ds/Minecraft: Update Aquatic- https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Update_AquaticRACV: Royal Automobile Club of Victoria- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Automobile_Club_of_VictoriaHenry Sutton biographer and relative Lorayne Branch- https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-04/henry-sutton-biographer-and-relative-lorayne-branch/10577812Papers done by Henry Sutton- http://www.ctie.monash.edu.au/hargrave/biography1.html#suttonPatent US8770615: Collapsible Wheeled Stretcher- https://patents.google.com/patent/US8770615History of the Ambulance- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_ambulanceHistory of stretchers- http://www.ambulanceservices.co.uk/NAPAS%20Training%20Files/Training%20Files/Short%20History%20of%20Stretchers.pdfPhar Lap: champion racehorse- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phar_LapBeasts of No Nation- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beasts_of_No_Nation_(film)Sean Connery- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_ConneryDaniel Craig: the blond Bond- https://www.today.com/popculture/its-official-daniel-craig-first-blond-bond-wbna9662926Real reason to why George Lazenby left Bond- https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/a828613/james-bond-george-lazenby-real-reason/Daniel Craig is paid 25 million for the next Bond movie- https://www.businessinsider.com.au/daniel-craig-paid-25-million-for-next-bond-movie-2018-5?r=US&IR=TIvy: Soul Calibur character- https://soulcalibur.fandom.com/wiki/IvyDarksiders III: Apocalypse Edition- https://store.thqnordic.com/games/darksiders/1135/darksiders-iii-apocalypse-editionDr Who episode: The Chase- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chase_(Doctor_Who)Dr Who episode: Rosa- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_(Doctor_Who)Falcon Heavy by SpaceX- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_HeavyFamous Birthdays4 Dec 1858 - Chester Greenwood, American inventor (invented earmuffs at 15), born in Farmington, Maine - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester_Greenwood4th Dec 1865 - Edith Cavell, British Nurse celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides without discrimination and in helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during the First World War, born in Swardeston, Norfolk - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Cavell4 Dec 1948 - Lin Onus, Australian Aboriginal artist (Michael and I are just slipping down to the pub for a minute), born in Melbourne, Victoria - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lin_Onus5 Dec 1901 - Walt [Walter Elias] Disney, animator, (Mickey Mouse), producer and co-founder of Walt Disney Co., born in Chicago, Illinois -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney5 Dec 1903 - Cecil Frank Powell, English physicist who discovered pion (pi-meson), a subatomic particle (Nobel 1950), born in Tonbridge, England - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._F._PowellEvents of Interest1 Dec 1948 – The Tamam Shud Case also known as the Mystery of the Somerton Man, is an unsolved case of an unidentified man found dead at 6:30 am, 1 December 1948, on Somerton beach, Glenelg, just south of Adelaide, South Australia. Alastair Caldwell tells good stories. A lot of good stories. Whether it's about how he got into the sport or what it was like looking after James Hunt the night before the Canadian Grand Prix they are always entertaining and they usually end with a michevous cackle.  For this Royal Automobile Club Talk Show we focused solely on 1976 – the year that James Hunt won the title. It was an incredible year in Formula 1 with everything from terrible accidents to race disqualifications. "I remember when we were on our way back from Japan," Alastair told me after we stopped recording, "and we all said to each other: There's no point in taking this to Hollywood, no one would believe what happened." Over 30 years later Rush, the Hollywood film centered around 1976, was made.  The Club is celebrating that world championship year all through 2016 and only two weeks ago hosted a dinner with John Hogan, Freddie and Tom Hunt and James' two sisters and brother. I first met McGuinness at the Isle of Man TT in 2011. I was on the island to write a colour piece about the week’s racing and the big characters and John was top of the interview list. Having organised the trip at the last minute the only hire car left on the island was a pink soft-top Nissan Micra. I decided to take my ‘bike helmet and hitch lifts. It was because of a particularly mad Frenchman – who had given me a lift from my campsite to the paddock that morning on his (very fast) BMW tourer – that I knocked on John’s motorhome door with slightly shaky hands. John opened the door, invited me in and offered me a ‘cuppa’. Being relatively new to road racing it seemed odd that one of its most successful counterparts was happy to be making tea. Formula 1 this was not. What followed was a fascinating 45 minutes chatting about the TT course and what makes it so special.
