Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Around 40 people turned out to the Cortes Island Museum on November 10 for the launch of a series of community speakers. The host, Brian Scott traced the idea for ‘Finding Home: The Cortes Island Experience'  to a conversation he had with Sherman Barker.  “Sherman and I have known each other for a few years, it's long other story, but he was up on Easter Bluff one day when Jane and I went up for a hike.  We're chatting, and he started telling us his arrival story. It actually goes even further back to when he came as a kid.  He said, there's lots of stories on the island here and if we don't somehow capture them, we're going to lose them.”  “I thought it would be an interesting thing for the museum to do because the museum has artifacts that it's saving and preserving and sharing with the public. Stories are artifacts as well. How do we capture those? Then it occurred to me, well, why don't we do a speaker series? I approached Sherman and said, ‘Hey, what do you think? You want to be the first?' And he's like, 'yep, It's awesome.'”   “So essentially it's: how did you discover the island? What made you decide this is going to be my home? And what keeps you here?”  Sherman described his interest in the project: “In my mind, I pictured a book with a leather cover, front and back, maybe made from one of the goats you tanned. It has parchment pages, like you may have discovered it in a hobbit library. It could be in our library. When people come here in the summer, or people who have been here a long time, they can write down why they came to Cortes and the things that happened when they came here. Everybody's got funny stories, sad stories, like what was your first ferry ride like? What was the reason you came to Cortes? It could be really cool book just to keep the past, present, and future all intertwined." "The first time that I  came here I just finished grade 6 in a little town up in the north Shuswap called Celista, which I think is pretty much burnt to the ground right now.  My dad was a teacher  and he had an elementary school that he was transforming into an outdoor educational school without the school board knowing about it.  I'm going back into the seventies, and public school.  He wanted to come to Strathcona Lodge, to take an edible plant and wilderness survival course so he could go back and teach his kids at the school. We packed up our old truck in the Shuswap and to the coast we came. We camped in the truck at Stanley Park. We ended up on Cortes because he was friends with the writer here, Gilean Douglas, and he wanted me to meet Gilean Douglas. We came to Cortes from Quadra. We camped at Rebecca Spit, because you could camp at the Spit at that time. I caught my first salmon there. We came across, and camped at the Gorge. And at that time, I think the Gorge would have been in the hands of  Tammy Allwork's parents. It was just a big field. No hot tub, you could go outside, dig a hole, and have a fire. It's summer. I remember picking up some apples, they're kind of started but not fully ripe, and walking out to an apple tree.  A black tailed deer looked at me and I looked at the deer and it walked up and ate the apple out of my hand. That's a pretty impressionable thing at 12 because where I grew up, white tailed deer do not walk up to you and eat apples out of your hands for a good reason, right?  That was my first sort of emphatic whoa!”

“Everyone is welcome from the elite athlete to somebody doing their first trail race to somebody doing their first ultra, someone starting in the trail community, somebody that's retiring from running. Community means a lot to me.”Kara Leinweber is a trail runner and race director, for Lewiston Ultra Events, who is community-driven and focused. It's clear she's very passionate about putting on events and ensuring they have a purpose. It was awesome hearing her speak about doing everything with intention. It was also awesome having her drop some news about a potential new 100-mile race! You might think that's the only news she dropped during the interview, but you'd be wrong. This one's a doozy and I'm so happy Kara and I got to chat about her trail life and what's important to her when it comes to trail races.“I wouldn't say the course (Shuswap) is a reflection of me, but I would say it's a reflection of what I look for when I participate in an event or an ultra. When I go to sign up for an event, one of the first things I'm looking at is, I like viewpoints. I really do. Exposure is my thing. It's not everybody's thing. Single track, not old quad roads.I feel like if I was to say something reflects me accurately, it would probably be my start finish line area. I think this is very accurate. I have the best playlist. Why should you consider mood and experience when pairing wines? What is a lustful wine? What do you need to know about British Columbia's wine regions? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with author and host of The Sipsters Wine Podcast, Luke Whittall. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Three of you are going to win a personally signed copy of Luke's new book, The Sipster's Pocket Guide to 50 Must-Try Ontario Wines. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me.  Good luck!   Highlights What makes the Golden Mile Bench so special? Which wineries on the Golden Mile Bench should not be missed? Why should you consider mood and experience when pairing wines? What is a lustful wine? Why does Luke describe Vancouver Island as the Italy of BC? Which labels should you look for from Vancouver Island? What makes the red wines of the Similkameen Valley unique? What do you need to know about the other BC wine regions including Fraser Valley, Gulf islands, Kootenays, Lillooet, Shuswap, and Thompson Valley? What does BC need to do in order to thrive as a wine region for the next five to ten years? How do Luke's The Sipster's Pocket Guides differ from other wine guides?   Key Takeaways I love that Luke likes to pair wines to moods rather than simply food. I think our emotional state and occasion are often far better predictors of a great match than whether your asparagus was oven-roasted or steamed. I especially like his description of a lustful wine. Luke continues to share surprising insights about British Columbia's wine regions and wines. I'm intrigued with the way Golden Mile Bench wines retain their acidity and structure, and am motivated to visit that area again.  I enjoyed his notion that there are times when you can tell that the wine really likes you.    Join me on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube Live Join the live-stream video of this conversation on Wed at 7 pm ET on Instagram Live Video, Facebook Live Video or YouTube Live Video. I want to hear from you! What's your opinion of what we're discussing? What takeaways or tips do you love most from this chat? What questions do you have that we didn't answer? Want to know when we go live? Add this to your calendar: https://www.addevent.com/calendar/CB262621   About Luke Whittall Luke Whittall has worked in cellars, vineyards, and wine shops since 2005. He has authored or co-authored 4 books on wine and is currently a wine instructor at Okanagan College. His most recent book, The Sipster's Pocket Guide to 50 Must-Try BC Wines follows up on the success of The Sipster's Pocket Guide to 50 Must-Try BC Wines, and continues to mark a new direction in wine writing.     To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/261.

Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales

The Secwepemc called the creature the Naitaka, as "an evil supernatural entity with great power and ill intent." The word "n'ha-a-itk" has various translations, such as "water-demon", "water god", or "sacred creature of the water".  Suwapma means “The People”. Early settlers had trouble pronouncing the word and chose to say “Shuswap” instead. The Suwapma originally had 30 bands located in BC's Southern Interior. This is our first in our new format. This episode will be the first of the Salmon People series where we share the voices of strong Indigenous youth who reflect on their cultural ties to salmon and vocalize why we must take action to save this crucial relative for the ecosystem and culture. Featured in this Episode are two youth from the Lummi Nation, Sadie Olsen and Jayden Phair Williams. You will also hear voices of Indigenous Leaders from the first Salmon People Project gathering held via zoom in March 2021. This Podcast shares salmon values, personal connections held with salmon, how important the salmon is to the environment and Native culture, and concludes with a call to action. We hope that after listening you will join us on a journey of giving a voice back to our sacred ancestor, the salmon.  Noutsiam friends and family, Children of the Setting Sun Productions is embarking on a journey to unite tribal nations in order to save our most sacred ancestor, the salmon. The Young and the Indigenous team will follow CSSP to collaborate with Indigenous communities who identify as the Salmon People to create a podcast series with the youth from these tribes. We plan to have a podcast with youth from each tribe who are involved which are: Lummi, Yurok, Umatilla, Shuswap, Swinomish and Yakima Nation. In each episode we hope to encourage the youth to think about their personal or cultural connection to the salmon and what that means to their community as a whole.  The larger focus is, “who are we without salmon?” We have to pose this daunting question as we address the rapid decline of this keystone species while also supporting the tribes who are fighting to keep their fish populations alive. Kirk & I had a great time on the Podcast.... so much so he forgot to mention during recording he competed in a show "Extreme Cowboy Backcountry Invitational" in which he won the Grand Champion & the Top Colt buckle. As Kirk tells it..."I was born and raised in the interior of BC, near the widely known Shuswap lakes. I hail from a large ranching and blue collar background. Our family is large, but we are quite close knit. I was raised along-side cousins who are more like siblings and we all share common interests in horses, ranching, hunting and sports. Having family that ranched in BC and AB meant that we were on the road, between the two, often. After high-school, I migrated to AB (GOD’s COUNTRY) because it’s always felt like home to me. It’s where I wanted to be. I live on a ranch, near Okotoks, AB and still spend a great deal of my time on the highway, living my best life. I love all sports but I have to admit that Skijor season is a HUGE highlight for me! When I can mix my best friends, horses, snow and speed, it doesn’t get much better! Towing a skier/snowboarder down a track, at mock-chicken speed, is a thrill beyond measure! It’s even better when we toss someone on a lounge and team-up two horses to rip them down the runway, in front of thousands of screaming fans! I teach Grade 2 and Gym, at a Catholic school, by day and it truly lights up my life. Each day is a new adventure and the energy we share is inspiring and life-giving! Our family has encountered a great deal of loss, both young and old. From losing my youngest brother, cousins, several uncles and my grandparents, that loss, either natural in progression or sudden has both deepened my faith and our family unity. We can look at loss and be saddened, which is OK, but we can also use it to celebrate the time we did share together and use those memories/experiences to better the lives of others, knowing that would make them smile. I live life in the fast lane and have faced several injuries along the way. I’ve broken many bones and lived through several fairly traumatic accidents both in vehicles and with livestock. I’ve had a major skull fracture and roughly 15 concussions. I’ve experienced struggles with permanent headaches, speech deficits and memory inconsistency but I also refuse to let any of these minor side-affects slow me down. I’ve aptly earned the nickname “Gongshow” and it’s a bit of a handle that outlines who I am… Life is meant to be lived and I plan on sliding into my pine-box yelling – NOW THAT WAS A RIDE! At this point in my life, I don’t rodeo but it’s always been and continues to be a huge part of our family and who we are. I love the sport and many of my friends are part of that community. Given my time constraints, I prefer to ride on the ranch, move cows with family/friends, explore the backcountry that surrounds us and find cool spots for unique images… I focus on conditioning and establishing quality horses that can compete in multiple disciplines. I’ve won several invitational “cowboy challenges” for top-colt and all-around titles. To me, the “West” is a way of life. It’s a culture that embodies hard-work and community. The West is rich in history and grounded in traditions that have been carried forward for generations. Authenticity and integrity are two of the most important aspects of the Western way of life, to me. In my images, I aim to share authentic experiences and those who have a story to share. Above all, I aim to portray our western way of life in an appealing and reputable manner." Now we have investment groups where people pool their money, make a solar field and then sell the power back to the grid. That is phenomenal!
