The first month of the year is a time for new goals and beginnings. For many, that includes resetting their relationship with alcohol. You or someone you know may be participating in Dry January, a month-long effort to be sober. The health trend has been popular in many countries for at least a decade, but its roots extend as far back as 1942, when the Finnish government created a campaign called “Sober January” as a propaganda blitz to raise readiness during World War II. Dr. Christopher Wall, a psychiatrist who is chief medical officer at Prairie Care, joins MPR News host Nina Moini to talk about the health benefits of Dry January.
This January, we're excited to launch "Free Dry January," a transformative initiative led by Dr. Will Horton, a leading expert in addiction treatment through NLP, Hypnosis, and Neurology. As you know, the impact of alcohol is devastating, more so than all other drugs combined, and it's our mission to change that for as many people as possible. What does this mean for your audience? Engaging Live Sessions: Dr. Horton will host live sessions every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout January, offering direct support and actionable strategies. Accessible Anytime: All sessions will be recorded, so no one misses out on these valuable insights. Proven Results: The techniques shared have helped thousands reclaim control from addiction. We would love your help in spreading the word. By sharing this free course with your email list, you can play a pivotal role in extending this life-changing opportunity to a wider audience.

IT'S TIME TO GET REAL ABOUT SOBRIETY!
For most of Emily's life, she only knew one way to drink: ‘Wisconsin-style binge drinking'. (I can relate. We grew up in the same town!) After becoming a nutritionist, however, a subtle sense of guilt about her drinking began to bubble beneath the surface. She didn't think much of it, though, because she had no idea how toxic alcohol was - they never addressed it in her nutrition classes! After becoming a mom, Emily's weekend binges became 5pm glasses of wine, and year over year her guilt grew. Still, quitting never crossed her mind. In fact, in 2019 she was mindblown to learn that a friend was trying Sober January. The concept didn't even make sense to her! Emily now realizes that that conversation planted the seed for her sobriety journey. By the end of 2020, Emily was seeking sober curious content. Her curiosity got the better of her when she tried a 21-day sober challenge. It was then that she experienced a terrifying wake up call - alcohol withdrawal symptoms. From there, she began to pay attention. When she returned to drinking, she could taste the ethanol and see the effect her hangovers had on her life. Six months later she took her next break, and this one ended up sticking. She is still sober to this day! She is now starting to learn what she enjoys outside of drinking, and is working to fill her life with fulfilling self care. While she doesn't say ‘forever', she cannot think of a single thing that would make drinking worth it again. Check out Emily's nutrition and food blog at www.myeverydaytable.com! You now have two ways to connect with other sober moms in the sober mom life world! Ohne stahlharten Willen kannst Du keine Sucht besiegen?

That's us – Melissa and Simone – chuckling over the quirks we've picked up from our folks, as we explore the bittersweet journey into adulthood. This episode isn't just about the gripes of hair maintenance or the modern-day struggle with digital distractions; it's a candid discussion about the realities of being a woman today. We're diving into the nitty-gritty, from the challenge of finding that elusive perfect pair of jeans to the daily decisions that leave us second-guessing at the dinner table. In a switch of gears, we tackle a listener's heartbreaking dilemma about infidelity and the hard path to mending trust, dispensing advice with a dose of compassion and realism. Then, we lighten the mood with the Big Hat of Mystery game, debating the merits of material wealth versus emotional fulfillment in relationships. So, are you ready for a mix of laughter, honesty, and that sprinkle of Irish charm? We've got it all in this episode – no clichés, just real talk with your pals.
Whether you're sober-curious, participating in Sober January, or have realized you're ready to make a change with respect to alcohol (or any other habit weighing you back), you're in the right place. Dr. Stephan Neff knows a few things about making big changes. A decade ago, he checked himself into rehab and kicked alcohol to the curb, one baby step at a time. Today, he's the author of My Steps to Sobriety: Get Sober and Stay That Way. Connect with Dr. Neff at https://mystepstosobriety.com/ You will learn: Many people don't actually hit a rock bottom before embracing sobriety, but have unaddressed trauma driving their actions. Over-achieving can be a different way to numb out while avoiding negative emotions. It's important to tune into our thoughts about the habits we're hoping to change.

Some of us have heard the phrase Dry January. In this epsiode, I'm supporting my friend, Kay Allison's mission to help professional women get free of alcohol to lose their anxiety, imposter syndrome, and stress. Being AF (alcohol-free) is the ultimate hack for life, career, and relationship success and Kay's new book, Juicy AF* (*Alcohol Free), is your how-to guide.Kay's insights, stories, and practical tools are helping women step out of their fear, anxiety, and shame and into their Juicy AF life to reach their full potential.I read the book and have heard Kay speak a few times. Here are a few of my takeaways:1. Kay lays out several spiritual principals. Following 1 a week can help you change your life perspective.2. Instead of a drink at night, I grab my favorite glass (for me, it is a habit of holding it at 5pm) and make a mock-tail. There are so many out there! Kay also gives you other tips to fill the "drinking space".3. Write down your story of origin and flip it over. You'll see things you never saw before.4. The meditation on page 108. The end of calendar years tend to be times for resets. We like to use them as an excuse for a fresh start. This is why we have Sober January and even Veganuary, which I find far more popular in the UK for some reason, and gyms are crowded and I see people very red in the face out for their firs run in many, many months. 2023 is a year of reset expectations and that's because, as we've discussed on this show, we are closing out an era and entering a new one whose contours are only coming into focus. The teetering economy will cause further stresses as all aspects of the economy and society begin to fully emerge not just from the pandemic era but a long run of economic growth. Let's face it: Expectations will be adjusted. We have seen this start in the technology industry, both with valuation expectations and worker expectations, and it will spread undoubtedly throughout the downstream economy, notably in media. We discuss the ramifications of these reset expectations for advertising, publishing and technology this week.Show notes:Troy Young's People vs Algorithms newsletterBrian Morrissey's The Rebooting newsletterUniversal EntitiesFollow Alex, Brian and Troy on TwitterTh

Sober January updates, encounters with post-modernism, some TV chatter
This was a hell of a week to stop drinking. The siege on the capitol building on January 6, 2021 is both frightening, and frighteningly predictable. I watched CNN sober, with a peppermint tea and in light of the last book I read, Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates. It's okay to be shocked. But we have to be shocked in context. The refrain is still the same: Lord, have mercy.

During what was supposed to be a month of sobriety from alcohol, The Drifter drifted and gets handed a dose of regret and he can't deny his culpability. For the most part we are good guys with good intentions.
In this episode, we discuss our holiday experiences, gifts, and a surprising New Year's Resolution!
The Drifter should be well rested but seems a little under the weather. We have found ourselves in the "squishy" period between Christmas and New Year. Only a couple more days of drinking (aka: partying) and we are off to Sober January.
Stew is joined by Chief Keith to discuss: - Chief's Love Life (1:58) - Sober January (6:10) - The Harden Debate (10:30) - The Miami Heat (21:08) - The Proposed Mid-Season Tourney (32:01) - Is James Harden a Guys Guy? (46:55) - Chip Chats (57:25)

Hey, all! I never know how to begin or end things (story of my life) but I’m trying to work on changing that aspect of myself. So with that being said, welcome! Where to begin? This podcast initially was my intro into discussing rapid life changes, especially as you got older. I’m in my thirties, and while I enjoy getting older — I started feeling suffocated by a life that didn’t seem to fulfill me. At the same time, i was meeting people (younger and older) who were living life on their terms and saying fuck it and doing them. I found that interesting and wanted to explore that and thus, the initial idea of "Getting Your Sh*t Together was born!"But wait, what happened tho?Well, life did. After a series of mishaps throughout the course of the past ten years, I took stock of where I was late last year and realized I needed to get my act together for my sake. First step, cutting out alcohol completely. I decided to do what a lot of folks do for the new year, I gave up drinking (again) for Sober January. Throughout all of that, I looked back at how alcohol has served my life (it hadn’t) and how it shaped the person I was to that point. Okay, but now what bih?Coming to terms with the idea that I didn’t relate to alcohol in a healthy way wasn’t overnight and it's still something I'm working through but instead of keeping it all in my head, I decided to go against my usual and talk about it. So, here it is in all it's swear-worthy glory. I'm not perfect, I don't always get it right but I'm honest about it -- which I couldn't say this same time last year. #progressLooking forward to connecting along the way. Cheaters can't take being cheated on. Mike crushed Sober January. The Drifter wouldn't mind a little love and companionship in his life. That's a hint for the ladies
In their last #SoberJanuary episode, Justin & Maurice talk about baby shower etiquette and someone makes a pre-emptive call to Dept of Social Services. Get your passport ready because these #InternationalHoes discuss that just how #Thirsty the people were at Fyre Fest doc. Chris Brown's merch aint loyal as he tries to profit off some recent allegations. Cardi B changes her residency status and performs at the Porn Awards. The hosts disagree on how to handle a listener letter about workplace conflict. But they finally agree on a common ISWIS. 10s Across the Board for #1s! #CategoryIs Follow us on all social media: @CategoryIsPod Email us at CategoryIsPod@gmail.com

The boys drink Sylvaner and become deranged as a way to celebrate #soberJanuary. They say a bunch of stuff they probably don’t mean so you can hold them responsible for their actions. Don’t follow their advice tbh. Welcome to season 3. Kevin has DTs and new characters, Duck has depression and freakum jeans. Both have terrible opinions and an hour to kill and apparently, literally zero shame. Let’s make 2019 the 420 of years baby. New Patreon exclusives coming for all 5$ a month (and over) memberships. Please rate and review and tell friends — lets make it so that the boys have to explain their #content to a grownup (not a judge or cop tho) this year, ok?/// List// 2Naturkinder, Silvaner Pet-Nat, 2017// Stefan Vetter, Silvaner, 2016// Letherbee Distillers, Besk// Trosset de Porrera, Priorat. ‘Olim’ 2015////Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/Disgorgeous)
