SummaryThe conversation discusses a recent research study on exercise-based injury prevention in endurance runners. The study found that there is no significant positive effect of exercise-based prevention programs on reducing injury risk and injury rates in endurance runners. However, the study also highlights the importance of supervision and adherence to the program, as studies that had close supervision showed a positive effect. The conversation emphasizes the need for individualized strength and conditioning programs, consistent engagement with the program, and consideration of broader healthy behaviours in lifestyle. The conversation covers topics such as the timing and benefits of caffeine gel, fueling for different types of runs, taking a break from long runs, and transitioning from slow to fast running.TakeawaysLack of appetite during training can be managed by eating smaller portions more frequently and focusing on nutrient-dense foods.During menopause, it is important to track and understand your body's individual needs and adjust training and nutrition accordingly.Recovery strategies should focus on the basics such as good sleep, rest, nutrition, hydration, and stress reduction.Long runs should be paced based on training goals and can include specific pace sections as race day approaches.Fasted training is not recommended, especially for females, as it can have negative effects on hormones and bone density.Mobility work can be beneficial for improving range of motion and balance, especially for trail and off-road runners.Fueling with gels should be personalized based on body weight and carbohydrate needs, with gradual increases in intake during training.Caffeine gels can be used strategically during races, but absorption may vary depending on the intensity of the run. Caffeine gel should be consumed about 90 minutes before the end of a marathon to allow time for absorption and performance enhancement.Fueling during long runs is important for performance and recovery, especially during marathon-paced runs.Taking a break from long runs can be beneficial to prevent burnout and rediscover the joy of running.Transitioning from slow to fast running requires gradually increasing intensity and getting used to being comfortably uncomfortable. Thanks for being part of our running community. He had planned to do the 100 miler originally. The race involves very technical terrain including grade 1 scrambles. The weather can also be highly variable with cold, wet, and windy conditions, or like in 2023, it can be oppressively warm!Faye agrees it's crucial for runners to carefully review course profiles and aid station distances rather than blindly entering races just because they sound cool. Slow veteran runners can take 24+ hours to finish a mountain 100K.They recommend entrants get experience on the actual course ahead of time if possible and consider hiring a coach for proper preparation. Don't just follow a generic training plan.Part 2 - Interview with Chelsea CreakChelsea recently won the women's Golden Trail Series for the UK and Netherlands. She started running after her husband entered her in the Man vs Horse Marathon in Wales back in 2016 which sparked her interest. She qualified for the UK finals in 2022 but had to drop out due to a bad ankle injury. #21 Dr. Richard Blagrove: Strength Training for Runners - How to lift your performance!

Maximum Mileage Running Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 9, 2023 51:41

In this episode, Nick speaks with Dr Richard Blagrove, senior lecturer in sport and exercise physiology at Loughborough University. They dive into the nitty-gritty details of strength training for runners.Richard explains how adding heavy strength work into a runner's program boosts race performance, mainly by improving running economy. Lifting weights activates more muscle fibres and enhances neuromuscular coordination compared to running alone. For optimal strength development, runners should use low reps with heavy weights rather than high reps that create metabolic fatigue. Leave those demanding efforts to interval sessions!Compound lifts like squats and deadlifts engage nearly the whole body when done properly, reducing the need for direct “core” exercises. Adding upper body training brings total body strength, supports faster leg turnover, and prevents imbalances. Don't just train your legs if you want to maximize performance! While bodyweight exercises are useful initially, adding external resistance is key for continuing strength adaptations long-term. But consistency with just 1-2 strength sessions per week is most important. Even 10-15 minutes of strength work tacked on after runs is better than nothing.Though strength training may help prevent injuries, outcomes vary widely from person to person. The performance benefits are much more clear and consistent. Some of Richard's best quotes:"If you're developing strength in the lower limb, then it would make complete sense to be an all-round athlete and develop a little bit of strength in the upper limb.""Everybody wants the little finicky sexy stuff that makes marginal gains, but they don't work on the big stuff.""Runners need to spend so much more time asking why."Hopefully, this episode has convinced you that strength training should be a priority, not just an optional add-on! Follow Richard on Twitter (@rich_blagrove) for more running science insights.Dr Richard BlagroveBSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, SFHEA, PGCE, ASCC, CSCSSenior Lecturer in PhysiologyThanks for being part of our running community. This week Nick, Mac and I explore the Evolution of our training philosophy and approach over the years, from where Nick started in his physio practice all the way through to our latest SoleMate training systems. Along the way we discuss the Protect - Correct - Develop framework, the integration of hardware and software, the concept of Restore to Explore as well as, of course, the importance of play-based training for building a more adaptable and resilient body and mind. Towards the end we discuss the Seven Days of Play challenge, which we've actually decided to call the Play Is The Way challenge, but it does start with seven consecutive days exploring one of our beginner SoleMate Sessions each day. We have also created a Proof of Play log that will guide you every step of the way and help you track your progress. The idea is that you start with the seven days in a row, get hooked on the process and the progress and continue this as a daily habit. We already have a bunch of legends leading the way with this challenge and supporting each other but of course the more the merrier so if you're keen to get involved the next step is to join the community (we'll put a link in the show notes) and download your Proof of Play log. Otherwise we hope you enjoy the episode today, if you do find value in it or in any of our podcasts you can help us spread the word by sharing it with your family and friends and also by leaving us a review wherever you are listening! In today's episode, Jon interviews Lori Barzvi, founder of the My Solemate pumice stone and foot soap product that has been a best seller on Amazon since 2014 as well as the Love, Lori brand of personal care products. Lori's entrepreneurial journey started with a tragedy that has inspired Lori ever since.  The night before 9/11, Lori Barzvi's brother, Guy, who was 29 years old and making a six-figure salary at Cantor Fitzgerald in the WTC, told her he was unhappy with his job. Working sixteen-hour days, including a brutally long commute, he had no life/work balance and expressed his desire to do something more entrepreneurial. The next day, Guy was killed. The tragic loss of her beloved brother would set the trajectory for Lori's future career. She went from corporate America to having a restaurant business which failed then a dance studio that failed. Lori then created her own product which failed many times, until she found Amazon where it became a #1 best seller. Lori's success on Amazon is a true testament to the lesson her brother's untimely and tragic death taught her about the importance of loving what you do for a living and never giving up. For the past 5 years, her entire business has been on Amazon.  She has seen great success, but the Amazon landscape is changing and becoming more difficult to grow, so Lori is pivoting her business outside of Amazon to build out her brand, which will also lead to increased success within the Amazon platform. In this interview, Lori shares her experiences in an effort to help other inventors and entrepreneurs succeed and learn from her successes and her failures.  Listen to this interview if you are interested in learning more about the following: ·      How a night of salsa dancing led to the invention of My Solemate·      What has changed on Amazon recently and how to continue to be successful on the platform·      How to capitalize on PR successes, including how My Solemate's appearance on Good Morning America led to over $30k in sales in 24 hours·      How to find meaning in your business and how that can help propel your success Her business is named “Love, Lori” because it was built in memory of Lori's brother, Guy.  The Love, Lori brand now includes an anti-fungal cream, a foot finish cream, a shower sole scrubber and more.  Lori's entire line of products can be found on Amazon, but also on her website, www.love-lori.com.  For all Harvest Growth podcast listeners, use promo code “HARVEST” for a 10% discount off of your purchase. If you have an innovative product with a compelling story you'd like to share with our audience, please reach out to us at podcast@harvestgrowth.com.

A Special Quote for Theresa Boundaries emerge from deep within. They are connected to letting go of guilt and shame, and to changing our beliefs about what we deserve. As our thinking about this becomes clearer, so will our boundaries. Boundaries are also connected to a Higher Timing than our own. We’ll set a limit when we’re ready, and not a moment before. So will others. There’s something magical about reaching that point of becoming ready to set a limit. We know we mean what we say; others take us seriously too. Things change, not because we’re controlling others, but because we’ve changed. - From Melody Beattie, The Language of Letting Go   The People Pleasing Human Pretzel Is the admiration that accompanies mothering everybody in our lives, worth the giant gaping void we get from not taking care of ourselves? More than likely not, but many women don’t seem to change their sacrificial behavior until they feel like they have lost themselves or some even take it to the edge of dying inside. They twist and bend like a pretzel to make everyone else happy, simply because they are able to. So, how do we step out of codependency and save ourselves? By reprogramming ourselves to follow the IAMHABIT #2: having compassion for ourselves first and then sharing ourselves with others.    Newly Single but Not Ready to Mingle Theresa Nutt was divorced for 7 years before she considered dating again. She used the time to rediscover herself while working with coaches and counselors. She figured out who she was, as an adult. She praises the book, Solemate by Lauren Mackler, which she says gave her guidance and confidence as she transitioned and transformed. When she was finally ready to meet men again, she turned to an internet dating site.   Do Women Really Respond to This? Online dating can be overwhelming for the new female user. As soon as she posts her profile, hundreds of responses from “supposedly” eligible bachelors appear in her inbox. It can take days to sort through the half-dressed or sometimes full-frontal photos. Messages with subjects like “How do you feel about friends with benefits?” and “I feel like an axe murdered today” could be comical if they weren’t such a waste of time. As you know, a woman looking for a life partner is serious business.   Things are Not Always What They Seem Researching someone on the internet seems easy enough but it’s difficult to verify anything. It’s extremely important for women to know who they are dealing with when they communicate using an online dating site. If a recent contact tells you he is going golfing with the guys or a new connection tells you he is a soldier in Syria, you have to believe him or the conversation ends. Police say women are generally trusting of other people and, therefore, must be extra cautious. If you are wondering why the police got involved, listen to Theresa share her very personal story of being deceived online by a man for months to the point of being overwhelmed with all he was asking of her.
