In this episode of ‘All Things Endurance,' host Rick Prince chats with exercise physiologist, Dr. Genadijus Sokolovas (Dr. G). Dr. G is widely regarded as one of the world's most accomplished physiologists. In this podcast, Rick and Dr. G discuss many areas related to program design, as well as hot topics such as Zone 2 and the ‘grey zone' intensity zone. If you want to learn from the best about programming and training ‘zones,' this episode with Dr. G is required listening! Here's what was covered: 1. Please tell our listeners a little bit about yourself (your education history, work history, current roles)?2. Coaches must take a lot of things into consideration when creating a training program. However, often coaches don't take into consideration an athlete's rate of adaptation. Could you discuss this a bit more?3. A lot of the questions that we get at UESCA is about program design, could you discuss some of the most important factors in creating a good program?4. What are some of the biggest mistakes that you see coaches make with respect to program design?5. Of the different physiological tests that are commonly done, is there one that you deem the most valuable?6. Most non-elite athletes are time-crunched. What are your thoughts on doing primarily Z1 and Z2 training, especially during the so-called ‘base training period' for these type athletes?7. There is a long-standing thought that ‘grey-zone' training is sort of no man land where minimal physiological adaptions occur. Is there any truth to this?

Thank you for listening today, friends! We're back, this time with an episode detailing my running journey. It hasn't been linear, and has involved nearly a dozen uses of the phrase "you'll never run again." The journey has taught me patience, courage, determination and perseverance to reach my goals. I've struggled to finish a one-kilometer run, watched the entire PE class move on to the next activity before I completed the Cooper test (6 lap run of 1.5 miles/2.4km), and DNF'd my first two 100 milers. Focusing on strength, flexibility, nutrition and overall wellness, being open to trying new things such as barefoot shoes, throwing away my orthotics, and incorporating yoga into my routine has kept me healthy to compete in ultras twenty-plus years after the first "you'll never run again." I've had an interesting and non-linear journey as a runner from that first 10km race with WAY too many people, to an injury at a marathon 3 short weeks later to finishing the hottest Javelina Jundred on record. Tune in today to hear about the journey, the decision to become a UESCA ultra running coach, and the training philosophy I offer. I'm here to get you to the finish line with a smile on your face. As always, connect with me on Instagram or through my website.
Thank you for listening, friend! Today I'm talking about my experience training for a 100 miler, Javelina Jundred, while working a physically demanding job. A coach help me achieve my goal of completing the 100 miler, in what was my third attempt at the distance. That supportive coaching catalyzed my decision to also pursue ultramarathon coaching through the UESCA certification process. My challenge was to not overtrain while working a job in which I am on my feet all day and burn over 5,000 calories with physical activity. Recovery was a challenge for me, as was fitting in all the life things. In this episode I share my experiences over the summer of 2024, as well as my new process now that I am self-coached. It's an evolving process in which I am using myself as a guinea pig to see how my theory works. Researching strategies for athletes working physically demanding jobs yielded some tips but not a lot of data or personal experiences of the training process. I found resources from CTS Coaching, UESCA, RunningShoesGuru online and combined that with what I am currently doing. Some takeaways from this episode include tips to avoid overtraining, tips to enhance recovery from training, the importance of realistic goals, the benefits of working with a coach, how to maximize training sessions and what cross-training methods can be more supportive. It's an evolving adventure as a self-coached athlete... and one who trains solo at least 95% of the time. If you're in a physical job and looking for support and coaching, I'm happy to chat with about your life situation, goals and current training. I am accepting athletes, and look forward to helping you achieve personal success in whatever form that takes. Remember, you can always contact me through Instagram or at cactus moose[at]protonmail[dot]com with questions, comments, guest suggestions and ultrarun coaching.Enjoy your day, friends!

If you've ever felt stiff and stuck like the tinman in the Wizard of Oz after being left out in the rain; have tight, sore knots that restrict your mobility, or have battled issues like frozen shoulder, this show is for you. We're learning all about fascia–the unsung connective tissue that holds our muscles in place, facilitates healthy, dynamic movement, and transfers energy throughout the body. When it gets stuck–which it's more likely to do during peri and postmenopause–we do, too. This week's guest, performance physical therapist Nicole Armbrust, guides us through a special presentation on fascial health and mobility so we can feel and play our best, injury and pain free for life. (As a bonus, Nicole gives a visual presentation, which you can watch on our Feisty Menopause YouTube channel.)Nicole Armbrust is a performance physical therapist with 24 years of experience, a masters runner with 17 Boston Marathon finishes, and a UESCA certified running coach. She also has completed a Fellowship in Applied Functional Science (FAFS) through the Gray Institute. While years of clinical practice and patient care gave her vast experience, Nicole is pivoting her business/expertise away from “traditional PT” and into coaching, courses, and speaking engagements using a hybrid model of in-person and online offerings. There's a lot of bad information out there when it comes to injury treatment and prevention. That's why it's so important to make sure you get information from a reliable source like today's guest, doctor of chiropractic Chantelle Maryuen. Chantelle works at the Runner's Academy clinic in Toronto, offering a variety of services helping runners with “striving to make striving for your goals a joyful experience rather than a painful one”. Part of the challenge in following research-based principles is that they are so specific to the individual. This means that good treatment for one person could be totally counter-productive for someone else. We want to make this episode as relevant as possible to you, so we'll cover what treatment options are proven to work for the vast majority of runners but also where to find good information to make treatment decisions for yourself. Treatment doesn't just apply to injuries though. How you treat niggles or soreness can be just as important to keeping you healthy. Whatever your current health, we promise you'll learn something new. During the interview we'll cover topic including: What is the difference between a chiropractor and physiotherapist, and how can each play a role in supporting good health How often and when to consider seeing a clinical professional What should runners focus on to avoid getting injured What popular treatment options are actually proven by research to provide benefit How to seek out good advice with treating an injury or pain How to differentiate normal training fatigue from something that might need medical attention A big part of achieving your running goals is staying healthy so that you can get your training done. Unfortunately, taking the wrong approach to treating injuries could be making the situation even worse. That's why you should listen up, to make sure you know what treatment options are proven to help keep you running pain-free. Guest Bio: Dr. Chantelle Maryuen is a graduate of Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. She was a competitive cross country and middle to long distance track runner for York University Track Club and the University of Toronto's Varsity Blues. She is a UESCA-certified and NCCP-trained run coach and currently trains for road races. She has clinical interests in running-related injuries, gait analysis, and rehabilitation. She applies various techniques in practice such as Neurofunctional Medical Acupuncture, Active Release Techniques (ART), joint mobilization and manipulation, Neurodynamic Solutions (NDS), exercise, education, and the latest evidence, to deliver the best patient-centered care. “I felt there was a big gap that could be filled with good, science-based, evidence-based information,” says Rick Prince, founder of the United Endurance Sports Coaching Academy. In this episode, Rick joins Brad Miles to explore the void he noticed in endurance sports education, which inspired him to create UESCA in 2014. For Rick, staying current with evidence-based information is so crucial because it's what ensures that coaches are providing athletes with the most effective and safe training methods, ultimately leading to better performance and injury prevention. Rick shares insights into the advancements in endurance sports science, particularly in female physiology and training technologies. He clears up common misconceptions, such as the myth that running damages your knees and the misunderstood role of lactic acid in muscle fatigue. Rick further explains UESCA's certification programs, which are designed to be thorough and adaptable to fit each learner's pace. He highlights the significant contributions of experts like Dr. Matt Hansen and athletes like Mel Rojas in shaping UESCA's curriculum. He also gives a sneak peek into what's next, including a strength and conditioning certification for endurance athletes and a newly launched course on physiological adaptations to endurance exercise. Tune in to this episode of Run Fast, Run Forever Presented by Lever Movement to boost your coaching skills and discover the importance of science-based training and ongoing education in the ever-evolving world of endurance sports. Quotes “A lot of the programs that were out there, they would come up with something and wouldn't update it at all. So, it was just really antiquated information that you were getting. One of the things we make an effort to do is update the information as new information comes out.” (03:15 | Rick Prince) “There are all these long-standing myths out there. I think one of the biggest ones that always gets attention is that endurance exercise is bad for you.” (06:24 | Rick Prince) “What we're trying to do is say, ‘Hey, it's all about education. It's all about the experience. It's all about those elements versus whether you're a top performer.'” (11:19 | Rick Prince) “For us, it's going to stay more focused on what we're doing purely from an educational standpoint. We are currently working on a strength and conditioning certification, which we believe will be in high demand. We're certainly receiving quite a few requests for it, and there's never been anything specifically for strength and conditioning for endurance athletes.” (13:55 | Rick Prince) “A lot of this came from my, for lack of a better word, hatred of the personal training industry, where everything seemed like a money grab. I approached it from the standpoint of, if I were a coach or an aspiring coach, what would I want? I would always want a reference point. For example, if we update our certifications, you don't pay for the update or for any additional content because I don't think that's how it should be.” (17:15 | Rick Prince) Links Connect with Rick Prince: https://enduranceconference.uesca.com/ Keywords: Use RUN75 for $75 off the Conference price https://www.instagram.com/levermovement/ https://www.instagram.com/bradmiles/ https://levermovement.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

In this episode of the All Things Endurance podcast, host Rick Prince chats with self-defense expert, James Jankiewicz. It is an unfortunate reality that recently, a month or two do not go by without hearing about someone being assaulted while exercising outdoors, often with horrific consequences. As the growth of trail/ultrarunning and gravel cycling is on a meteoric rise, there are more athletes running and cycling in isolated areas than ever before. While learning self-defense is important for everyone to know, it's never been more important amongst those that exercise in isolated environments. This is not noted as a scare tactic but that of reality. In this podcast, James discusses the following areas:1. James's background 2. How is the form of self-defense discussed by James different from other forms of self-defense and why is it the most effective?a. Discuss traditional self-defense models3. What are some of the most important aspects to the recommended form of self-defense?4. What are some situations to try to avoid if possible (ie. Running in isolated areas by themselves)?5. What about carrying things such as pepper spray or other things like that?6. What are some of the key target areas on a human?7. What about defending yourself against animals such as dogs, wildlife?8. Discuss the difference when self-defense become necessary between doing it when tired (during a run) or when not tired and how to train for this.9. Does the size/weight of an attacker influence one's response? As noted in the podcast, James is developing a self-defense specialization course for UESCA which will be free of charge for everyone due to its importance. When this course launches, UESCA will announce it via newsletter and social media channels.
Welcome to season 2 episode 15 of The Fuel Run Recover podcast! This week I'm bringing you our very first panel discussion, with not one, but TWO fellow running coaches to talk about returning to running after babies! In this episode we discuss some of the challenges runners can face post-partum, but also why your potential as a runner doesn't need to go out the window after having kids! Erin Van Schyndle is a Postpartum Run Coach and Personal Trainer. She has been working in prenatal and postpartum fitness for 14 years and is a UESCA certified run coach. She has run everything from 5ks to marathons and 70.3 triathlon distances. Erin became passionate about helping postpartum runners after her own postpartum running experience was anything but easy. It seemed like any time she got some momentum, she would get injured, sick, or burnt out. She finally reached out to a physical therapist and run coach who specifically worked with postpartum women. It was a complete game changer. After Erin had such a great experience with a coach, she got her run coaching certification and took additional training on postpartum running. She loves helping other postpartum runners get back to the sport they love. You can find Erin at therunningdoula.com and @erintherunningdoula on instagram. Jessie is a Boston Qualifying runner who is on a journey to complete a marathon in all 50 states began as a way to visit friends and travel since has completed 25 marathons (in 23 states) along with multiple 5Ks, 10Ks, and half marathons. She has also had her experience as a triathlete completing many Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons along with a half Ironman. Her motivation has allowed her to self-coach herself to PRs after reading multiple running books before finally deciding to get her RRCA running coach certification in 2021, to be able to help other runners improve their running and find the thrill as well. Her current PRs are a 19:32 5K, 1:30 half marathon, and 3:13 marathon. She has her own run coaching business Running with Roses and also assists with run coaching for Running Explained. In this episode of the All Things Endurance Podcast, host Rick Prince chats with renowned ultrarunning coach/author and UESCA principal, Jason Koop about training considerations for 100+ mile ultramarathons. Across many endurance sports disciplines, there is a trend toward longer distance races, and ultrarunning is no exception. Some of the topics that Rick and Jason discuss are:1. Why do you think there is such an interest in 100+ mile ultras now?2. From a volume perspective, are there any general training guidelines that athletes looking to target 100+ mile races should pay attention to?3. From a nutritional demand standpoint, what, if any are the differences between a 100+ mile ultra and a < 100+ mile ultra?4. Should someone racing a 100+ mile ultra, still include intensity in their training program?5. Are there any race distance prerequisites that someone racing an 100+ mile ultra distance should consider?6. Any special training/race prep considerations to take into account if training for a 100+ mile ultra?

It's the New Year, and we all know what that means. Perhaps you are already on your way to working toward your 2024 goals. Others might be planning to start on Jan. 1. Or maybe later when the snow begins to melt. Some will go it alone, so to speak. But for a great many, coaching will improve the chances you can have success. After all, I have yet to see a football team take the field this bowl season without a coach. Even in individual sports like golf or tennis, the pros have coaches. Heck, Tiger Woods had a cadre of coaches – a swing coach, a mental skills coach, a strength coach, a nutrition coach, etc. What can a running coach do for you, and who might want to have one? I discuss this with UESCA-certified coach Miki McConaha and cover many aspects in which coaches can help you get more out of a sport in which you're already investing a lot of your time and resources, so why not get the most bang for your buck, so to speak. Many runners enjoy the community aspect to being coached, but perhaps you live in a remote area, or you have a schedule that doesn't allow you to make group runs. So Miki and I have begun the Be Positive Runners community. Miki and I will provide you customized, personal workouts on the TrainingPeaks app, and we will have group online calls where we can share experiences, tips, and provide encouragement to one another. Hopefully this will develop into group trips to goal races. We will initially limit the community to 10 motivated individuals who want to help themselves and others knock out their 2024 goals. If interested, shoot me a message at silly_billy@msn.com or on Facebook or Instagram Messengers and we can talk to see if you would like to be a Be Positive Runner to achieve more in 2024, or mention it to a friend who you think could use this kind of positive community.Miki McConahawww.trainingthroughthetrees.comFacebook Miki McConahaInstagram @miki.mcconaha10 and through.the.trees10Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

In this episode, Cindy Abrami, who is also a partner at UESCA, discusses how to start and structure a group training program. Among endurance athletes, training in groups is quite commonplace – whether it be teams or social gatherings, group training is a popular offering. As such, a common question of new coaches is how to start a group training program. People start group training programs for all different reasons. Some of these reasons include marketing for their coaching practice, revenue generation (fee-based program), raise money for charity as a group, etc... Regardless of the reason for starting a group training program, there are several key things that someone would need to be aware of to give them the best possible chance of success. In this podcast, Cindy discusses all of these key areas and more!
When evaluating any new technology and whether it will help your running, product reviews are typically our first means of learning about the pros and cons of a product. By learning how to use these reviews to your advantage, you're more likely to make better decisions about which products work best for you. Mention running to many people and they visibly cringe. When I started running I had no idea that in order to cover significant mileage comfortably you actually needed to keep your heart rate low from beginning to end, which is why it took me so many years to learn to enjoy running. A couple of months ago I came across the Mindful Runners website I contacted Jurgen and began my journey of learning to slow down, become aware of my physiological responses to exercise and be mindful of building an acerbic foundation. With consistent practice and the right coaching, it is indeed possible to change a lifetime of un-resourceful training habits. In this episode I chat with Jurgen Vogt - ultra endurance athlete with a degree in sport psychology, certified Life Coach, BreathWork coach and a UESCA certified Ultra-Running Coach. Jurgen explains just how and why everyone can enjoy and have fun running if done the right way. In 2021, Eric took on the Tuna 200 Mile Relay as a solo runner and broke the solo course record...all without having ever even raced a 50K. He has since become a UESCA certified endurance Coach and recently had the assist in the Last Man Standing Ultra after completing 121+ miles over 29 hours. But most importantly, he overflows with joy and loves to see those around him succeed. Tune in during your long run to hear why Eric says we should never let the size of a goal dictate whether we pursue it. And huge shoutout to Dylan for making the introduction. Be sure to follow Eric ilon IG at https://www.instagram.com/eric_hewell/ and check out his newly launched site at https://erichewell.run/ Enjoy! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theultrarunningguys/message
