SummaryThe conversation discusses a recent research study on exercise-based injury prevention in endurance runners. The study found that there is no significant positive effect of exercise-based prevention programs on reducing injury risk and injury rates in endurance runners. However, the study also highlights the importance of supervision and adherence to the program, as studies that had close supervision showed a positive effect. The conversation emphasizes the need for individualized strength and conditioning programs, consistent engagement with the program, and consideration of broader healthy behaviours in lifestyle. Future studies should focus on larger-scale, long-term prospective studies and explore the multifactorial nature of overuse injuries in runners.TakeawaysExercise-based prevention programs do not have a significant positive effect on reducing injury risk and injury rates in endurance runners.Supervision and adherence to the program are important factors that may contribute to the effectiveness of exercise-based prevention programs.Individualized strength and conditioning programs, consistent engagement, and consideration of broader healthy behaviors are recommended for runners.Future studies should focus on larger-scale, long-term prospective studies and explore the multifactorial nature of overuse injuries in runners.Chapters00:00Introduction and Background03:11Summary of the Research Study06:17Supervised vs. Non-Supervised Strength Training09:22Future Research and Recommendations18:05Practical Advice for Runners23:42Limitations of Current Research and Future Studies31:40Takeaways and ConclusionThanks for being part of our running community. SummaryThe conversation covers topics such as lack of appetite during training, managing nutrition during menopause, recovery strategies, pacing long runs, fasted training, mobility work, and fueling with gels. The conversation covers topics such as the timing and benefits of caffeine gel, fueling for different types of runs, taking a break from long runs, and transitioning from slow to fast running.TakeawaysLack of appetite during training can be managed by eating smaller portions more frequently and focusing on nutrient-dense foods.During menopause, it is important to track and understand your body's individual needs and adjust training and nutrition accordingly.Recovery strategies should focus on the basics such as good sleep, rest, nutrition, hydration, and stress reduction.Long runs should be paced based on training goals and can include specific pace sections as race day approaches.Fasted training is not recommended, especially for females, as it can have negative effects on hormones and bone density.Mobility work can be beneficial for improving range of motion and balance, especially for trail and off-road runners.Fueling with gels should be personalized based on body weight and carbohydrate needs, with gradual increases in intake during training.Caffeine gels can be used strategically during races, but absorption may vary depending on the intensity of the run. Caffeine gel should be consumed about 90 minutes before the end of a marathon to allow time for absorption and performance enhancement.Fueling during long runs is important for performance and recovery, especially during marathon-paced runs.Taking a break from long runs can be beneficial to prevent burnout and rediscover the joy of running.Transitioning from slow to fast running requires gradually increasing intensity and getting used to being comfortably uncomfortable. Thanks for being part of our running community. He had planned to do the 100 miler originally. The race involves very technical terrain including grade 1 scrambles. The weather can also be highly variable with cold, wet, and windy conditions, or like in 2023, it can be oppressively warm!Faye agrees it's crucial for runners to carefully review course profiles and aid station distances rather than blindly entering races just because they sound cool. Slow veteran runners can take 24+ hours to finish a mountain 100K.They recommend entrants get experience on the actual course ahead of time if possible and consider hiring a coach for proper preparation. Don't just follow a generic training plan.Part 2 - Interview with Chelsea CreakChelsea recently won the women's Golden Trail Series for the UK and Netherlands. She started running after her husband entered her in the Man vs Horse Marathon in Wales back in 2016 which sparked her interest. She qualified for the UK finals in 2022 but had to drop out due to a bad ankle injury. She came back stronger than ever in 2023 to win the series. Her advice for new trail runners is to join group runs and clubs to meet supportive people who can provide guidance on gear, training, and racing. Thanks for being part of our running community. #21 Dr. Richard Blagrove: Strength Training for Runners - How to lift your performance!

Maximum Mileage Running Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 9, 2023 51:41

In this episode, Nick speaks with Dr Richard Blagrove, senior lecturer in sport and exercise physiology at Loughborough University. They dive into the nitty-gritty details of strength training for runners.Richard explains how adding heavy strength work into a runner's program boosts race performance, mainly by improving running economy. Lifting weights activates more muscle fibres and enhances neuromuscular coordination compared to running alone. For optimal strength development, runners should use low reps with heavy weights rather than high reps that create metabolic fatigue. Leave those demanding efforts to interval sessions!Compound lifts like squats and deadlifts engage nearly the whole body when done properly, reducing the need for direct “core” exercises. Adding upper body training brings total body strength, supports faster leg turnover, and prevents imbalances. Don't just train your legs if you want to maximize performance! While bodyweight exercises are useful initially, adding external resistance is key for continuing strength adaptations long-term. But consistency with just 1-2 strength sessions per week is most important. Even 10-15 minutes of strength work tacked on after runs is better than nothing.Though strength training may help prevent injuries, outcomes vary widely from person to person. The performance benefits are much more clear and consistent. Some of Richard's best quotes:"If you're developing strength in the lower limb, then it would make complete sense to be an all-round athlete and develop a little bit of strength in the upper limb.""Everybody wants the little finicky sexy stuff that makes marginal gains, but they don't work on the big stuff.""Runners need to spend so much more time asking why."Hopefully, this episode has convinced you that strength training should be a priority, not just an optional add-on! Follow Richard on Twitter (@rich_blagrove) for more running science insights.Dr Richard BlagroveBSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, SFHEA, PGCE, ASCC, CSCSSenior Lecturer in PhysiologyThanks for being part of our running community. Ever wondered how to fuel your body before that early morning run when you're racing against time? Get ready to unravel the science behind carbohydrates and their role in powering great and speedy running. Fret not about post-run hunger pangs, as we discuss the importance of hydration and nutritious food, spilling the beans on healthy snack options that can give you that quick energy boost you need. Carbohydrates and running have long been subjects of debate among fitness enthusiasts. We break down the difference between fast-acting and slow-burning carbs, debunking myths about pasta parties as an effective carb-loading strategy. We give you the lowdown on fueling during runs, discussing the right quantity of carbs you need, and how to weave them into your regular running routine. As we wind up, we equip you with the knowledge on how to balance your fat and protein intake with increased carbohydrate consumption. We shed light on planning your carb intake for a race and suggest different snack options for the day before the race. And remember, practice makes perfect. Get into the habit of training your body on your fueling strategy rather than waiting till race day. Whether you're into shorter runs or longer races, we recommend fueling strategies that suit different distances and discuss why psychological boosts, like taking a gel, can be as beneficial as physiological ones. Thanks for being part of our running community. “If there's stressful stuff, and who doesn't have that, the run eases it. It absolutely does. We hear this, of course, from lots of people, and more and more people are figuring out what's going on in terms of brain chemistry—it eases anxiety and stress, I'm talking about serious stress with people, clinical anxiety—but I feel that. And so years and years ago I kind of assumed a mantra, if you will, and that is you come home from work and haven't run, and it is, ‘When in doubt, do it.' And it's served me well, and it still doesn't mean I haven't missed some days, but if I'm kind of on the fence, I'm a little tired, I don't feel up to it, a lot on my mind—get out the door, get in some miles, and I always find that I'm better off for it.” The 50th running of the New York City Marathon is just a couple weekends away and who better to talk to about it than George Hirsch, chairman of the New York Road Runners, and someone who has been involved with the event to one degree or another since its beginnings. This conversation was a real treat for me. We spent half of it talking about the New York City Marathon, its history, its stories, its allure, and more. We also discussed how all of those things went into a new book called The New York City Marathon: 50 Years Running, which is a coffee table keepsake that I'm really enjoying right now. I also got George to tell me more about himself, his legendary career in publishing, which included a stint at Runner's World during its heyday, how he got his start in running back in the 1960s, what keeps him running six days a week at the age of 87, how his relationship to it has evolved over the decades, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by: — Runderwear. Runderwear's mission is to eliminate the discomfort caused by ill-fitting underwear and to create seamless performance running underwear, base wear, bras and socks that are supremely comfortable, moisture wicking and chafe-free. “If all that mattered to me was [to run] the best time possible in two weeks then yes, I'd probably go into the other field and just run with some people who I know are right around my fitness level, but luckily I've had fun at Boston a couple times and I realize that's not all there is. It's not only about squeaking out every second, it's about having an awesome experience and I'm pretty pumped to compete. I think in the best way possible, when I think about that last stretch by BU and how horrible it is and how painful it can be to try to muster…you've got like two miles to go and you're like, ‘I just wanna be done.' My dream would be that there's someone ahead of me and they're another Masters runner that has a number on their back and I'm like, ‘I gotta catch that guy,' because that's what also makes it super fun.” Peter Bromka, who first appeared on Episode 92 of the podcast back in 2019, comes back on the show to geek out on all things Boston Marathon with me. Both of us will be competing in this year's race on Monday, October 11, and Peter will be in the elite field as one of the top-ranked Masters runners, which is super cool. “So much of groundedness is about building a life that you want to live in right now and those things are often in opposition to striving, because when you're striving, when you're really going toward something, it's very easy to forget about watering the roots, tending to the base, whatever it is. But when you accomplish or you fail to do that thing, if you haven't been taking care of all this other stuff, then there's still nothing there and you still fill empty. So you could also argue it's just about really focusing on what is there right now, what's in front of you, and it's not to say you become a zen monk that's totally content. I would argue that it's still great to strive but the texture of the striving changes, so instead of striving from a pace of compulsion—‘I need to win this and if I don't I'm a failure' or ‘I need to hit the best-seller list and if I don't something's wrong'—it's much more that this is a great goal but it's a great goal because all the steps I'm gonna have to take to reach it are going to really fulfill me and give my life happiness, joy, and growth.” Brad Stulberg is a an author, speaker, and executive coach who researches, writes, and coaches on human performance, sustainable success, and well-being. His work has appeared in Outside magazine, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Wired, and other publications. He's the best-selling author of Peak Performance and the Passion Paradox, both of which he co-wrote with Steve Magness, and he's got a new book coming out on September 7 called The Practice of Groundedness, which explores the foundation of peak performance, true wellbeing, and sustainable success. This conversation centers around Brad's new book and we dive into topics that I think are relevant to many of us: the pursuit of high achievement that seems pervasive in our society today, the fallacy of “arriving” in life and how that gets the best of so many of us, what Brad calls heroic individualism or an ongoing game of one-upmanship against ourselves and others, the differences between real vulnerability and performative vulnerability, and a lot more. This is our 13th workshop, and in this one Holly and I talk about one of our favourite subjects: running kit! I wanted to chat about what we're going to be wearing for the virtual Vitality 10K, and in the course of that discussion just chat about our favourite bits and pieces, and what we're going to be investing in next. We've both learned so much over the last few years in terms of the kit and shoes that work for us – in a surprise move even for her, Holly comes out and confesses that she actually needs support shoes, only just realising that she's been running in that type for the past year. Both of us talk about running in old favourites, so while I've added everything here that we're running in that I can – some of them are things we've been running in for ages, so the links are to newer things and not the exact items that we have now. I can't eulogise enough about my Brooks top, which is ancient, but everything about it – the softness, the arm length, the collar - is aces. However we're going to be running in the sun unexpectedly this week, so I may need a rethink on the top front. We also talk – at length, this is us after all – about how running pants are now a thing, and more important than you might think. We discuss the true evil of the cotton knicker (Holly has the scars to show for why running in those is not a good idea). And we chat about running commando, which neither of us have ever done, neither of us like the sound of, and both of us revert to children in this part of the discussion, rather than the mature adults we're supposed to be.  You should totally become a member of Women's Running. Coming from a very sporty family, it's perhaps not surprising that Gabby excelled at sport as a child, becoming an accomplished gymnast in her teens. Welcome to episode 4, series 2 of the Women's Running podcast. In this episode we speak to Sabrina Pace-Humphreys. We weren't sure what to expect by the time we spoke to her: at that time she had garnered quite a bit of interest partially because she's one of the founders of Black Trail Runners, and had already been a cover star on a different running magazine. What we didn't expect was just how inspiring, how brilliant, how funny she was: in many ways, Sabrina has been one of the most fun conversations we've had but also one of the most revealing. She challenges us to have the balls to get out there and actually do something. Not just listen, not just act surprised when we're told that few black runners are taking up trail running (or even running), and to not just accept the lack of diversity at the start line of races. She wants us to demand change from event directors, and to question decisions, and to question our own motives. She is so passionate, so wonderful, and incredibly moving. She talks here not just about setting up Black Trail Runners, but also her history with running, taking on the Marathon des Sables (and besting it), and how “small steps lead to massive change”.@sabrunsmiles@blacktrailrunnersRead more about Sabrina in our interview with her.Runderwear Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=67575412) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. She came to our attention when she won that marathon in 2019, in so doing becoming the third fastest GB woman of all time. But how she got to that startline in the first place is a rollercoaster journey through injury after injury. She talks to us here about her ultra sporty start at school, and then how her career weaved in and out of dramatic injuries, including multiple spine fractures, and how she built back from that. She also talks very honestly here about how she didn't have a proper period until she was 27, the importance of oestrogen on bone health, and how important periods are as an indicator of overall women's health. Jess is a presenter on the Female Athlete podcast, which is well worth a listen, and she's also a brand champion for the excellent FitrWoman app. She speaks eloquently here about how important it is for young athletes to learn what their bodies are going through. This episode is sponsored by Runderwear. Tasha's always been a runner, but she had noticed that very few other black women were joining her at the start line of races, and she quickly realised that there were a ton of barriers that prevented black women from taking up running. She set up Black Girls Do Run to help support more women to access running and to enjoy it, and to help educate wider society about the presence of these barriers.   The Running Event made its way back to Austin this past year and this local gal couldn’t have been happier! As their website indicates, The Running Event consists of more than 250 brands including some of the biggest fitness companies on the planet as well as innovative newcomers. It is, as they say, a great opportunity to see new product before any other channel of distribution and meet with key executives at the best suppliers to the run specialty channel. It’s also the chance for the fitness-oriented companies to discuss industry trends and strategize with each other through changing times and shifting buying habits. For a fitness enthusiast, podcast and writer like me, it’s the chance to go behind the curtains, catch a glimpse and sample what’s to come. I also see it as an opportunity to highlight companies, old and new, who are working diligently to improve our well-being, safety, comfort, recovery and fitness potential. In talking to business owners, marketing gurus and salespeople, you see their true passion for what they do. If we don't invest in the future of our own health and fitness, what can we invest in?  Even though I learned about a variety of products from footwear, to nutrition, to compression, to bras, one thing rings true from all of the vendors and companies - they care about the end user. In fact, these days, so much of their marketing depends on it. Positive word of mouth carries more weight than any ad campaign in a magazine ever will. That’s why I’m honored to share my positive experience with many of the booths I visited at The Running Event. So many welcomed me into their space to share their stories. Some of the products are fairly new, like family-owned maple syrup producers, Untapped. Others are larger companies like this year’s Kona shoe juggernaut, Hoka One One, who seem to have found “their time to fly” as their slogan suggests. Big or small, new or veteran, each company had a human element and, on their behalf, I'd like to share their enthusiasm. This isn’t so much a review of products because, the way I see it, every one of those companies is doing good. My only regret is that I didn’t get a chance to visit every one of those 250 companies. There's always next year, right?   Here is Part One of my Treasures from TRE!
