Our girlypop, Mizu, finally comes face-to-face with our girlypop, Akemi, and they have a stare off over some hot sake. They don't end up doing sake bombs together (unfortunately), but there is definitely an explosion between the two. Also, who knew poetry had that effect on people? Not me, but now I am intrigued! I'll keep you posted on any future poetry endeavors that I partake on. LOL. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thatshoweffedmeup/support

Dawn's first novel, “Pono & Aloha vs the Zero-Sum Game”, was just released and available on Amazon — and we're delighted to meet her to chat about it! It's a fascinating coming of age story of a young girl in Hawaii who discovers the spirit world and her place in it while trying to solve the historically challenging conundrum of saving the past vs helping the present and future. It is a novel of examining the unintended consequences of all our actions, whether we mean them for the best or no. There are trigger warnings, but it's a very worthy book that many women of all ages can relate to. … Continue...Episode 204 – Interview with Dawn Akemi

Blue Eye Samurai is an adult animated action television series created and written for Netflix by wife-and-husband team Amber Noizumi[1][2] and Michael Green, with supervising director and series producer Jane Wu. It was co-produced and animated by French studio Blue Spirit [fr]. The first season premiered on November 3, 2023. In December 2023, the series was renewed for a second season which will be released in 2026.[3][4] During Japan's Edo period (17th century), half-white half-Japanese onna-musha (female warrior) Mizu (meaning water) quests for vengeance against four white men, one of whom is her father, who illegally remained in Japan during the closing of its borders by the Tokugawa shogunate.[5] Maya Erskine as Mizu, a female mixed-race blue-eyed bushi. Her experiences of discrimination as a mixed-race Japanese child have left her cold, bitter and vengeful. Forced by her mother to disguise herself as a boy so as not to be found, she chooses to maintain her disguise into adulthood to pursue her path of revenge more freely. George Takei as Seki, Princess Akemi's male tutor. He sympathizes with Akemi's situation and later takes steps to ensure her freedom. Masi Oka as Ringo, an optimistic, handless male cook who idolizes Mizu. Despite Mizu initially not wanting a companion, she later tolerates Ringo. He proves surprisingly helpful and loyal to Mizu. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Master Eiji, a blind swordsmith who raised Mizu. He was the first person to show Mizu kindness, partially because he cannot see her; as a result, Mizu holds deep respect for him, referring to him as "Swordfather". Brenda Song as Princess Akemi, the pampered but strong-willed daughter of a nouveau riche lord. She is in love with Taigen and resents her father's control over her and seeks a life of independence. Darren Barnet as Taigen, a promising but arrogant male swordsman of humble origins. He is in love with Princess Akemi and harbors a strong resentment towards Mizu, which has lasted since their childhoods, and later seeks revenge after being humiliated in a duel which cuts off his engagement with Akemi. Randall Park as Heiji Shindo, Fowler's nominal jailor and accomplice. Kenneth Branagh as Abijah Fowler, an Irish smuggler who is allied with the Shogun, in secret defiance of Japan's Sakoku closed-door policies. He plans to overthrow the current Shogun and replace him with a leader who will open Japan to outside influence. Stephanie Hsu as Ise, a prostitute. Ming-Na Wen as Madame Kaji, a cunning and savvy madam. Harry Shum Jr. as Takayoshi, the Shogun's second son. Mark Dacascos as Bloodsoaked Chiaki, an assassin and the leader of the Four Fangs gang. Orli Mariko Green as Young Mizu Judah Green as Young Taigen Patrick Gallagher as Lord Daichi, Akemi's father. Ann Harada as Mama, Mizu's unnamed adoptive mother. Although Mizu initially believed she was her biological mother, it's later revealed she was merely her maid who was paid to care for her. Byron Mann as Mikio, a disgraced samurai who was married to Mizu. Dacascos, Gallagher, and series co-creator Amber Noizumi also voice additional minor characters. Other supporting voices are provided by Gedde Watanabe, Eric Bauza, Clyde Kusatsu, Keone Young, Brittany Ishibashi, Holly Chou, Marcus Choi, Matthew Yang King, Jane Wu, West Liang, Alain Uy, Takaaki Hirakawa, Sherry Cola, and Christine Ko.

We're taking one last look back into the sunset as we wrap up all discussions about Outlaws of Thunder Junction in an interview with the author herself, Akemi Dawn Bowman! You may remember Bowman's work back in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, where she wrote about a young man trying to find someone he'd lost while getting wrapped up in a multi-planar story featuring a villain's first-time story appearance and another villain's return to story after many years away. She does it again in OTJ, and we're here to ask her all about it! If you like our podcast, thank you! We like you, too! Blue Eye Samurai is Netflix's latest blockbuster adult animated series, joining the likes of Arcane and Nimona (which we've already discussed on this podcast - check 'em!) as proof that extremely high quality animated television exists, and it's not just for kids. Mizu is an incredibly well-designed protagonist, with so much to unpack on her biracial background and the way she navigates her gender identity; there's a powerful supporting cast with characters like Akemi, Madame Kaji, Fowler, and animated George Takei; the animation and worldbuilding is impressively expansive; and season 1 concludes with definitely one of the endings of all time. Also: why is Iris convinced that Mikio f@#ked a horse? Come join us to find out! Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.
Welcome to Sense of Self, a podcast where we explore the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what happens when those stories stop working. In this episode, I had the privilege of chatting with Akemi Look, a multi-talented actor, producer, and writer based in Los Angeles. Akemi's journey is one of resilience, healing, and self-discovery.We delved into Akemi's childhood, where she shared her experiences of growing up half-Japanese, half-Chinese in Michigan. She opened up about the challenges she faced, including racial taunts and the struggle to assimilate in a predominantly white community. At the age of 10, Akemi set her sights on becoming a rhythmic gymnast, driven by a deep desire to prove her worth and be accepted as "American enough." She recounted the grueling training regimen, the sacrifices she made, and the pressure she felt to succeed. Akemi's dedication to her sport led her to represent the United States in international competitions, but it came at a cost. Our conversation took a poignant turn as Akemi shared about a life-altering accident that shattered her face and forced her to confront deep-seated trauma. This event became a turning point in her healing journey, prompting her to slow down, reflect, and prioritize her well-being. Akemi's vulnerability in discussing her struggles with mental health, addiction, and trauma highlighted the importance of self-care and seeking help.We also explored Akemi's relationship with her family, particularly her journey towards forgiveness and understanding with her parents. The role of friends, her husband, and her own inner strength in supporting her through difficult times was a testament to the power of community and resilience. As we wrapped up our conversation, Akemi reflected on her growth and transformation, describing herself as a bright, hopeful person ready to shine her light. Her journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance is an inspiring reminder of the healing power of self-discovery.Thank you for listening to Akemi's story, and for being a part of our community. Hello and welcome to episode 177 of the ACPG Podcast. This week Ben is in Newcastle and zooming with Matthew Murphy of The Wombats and Love Fame Tragedy who is in LA. Ben and Murph talk about his second album from his side project Love, Fame, Tragedy. We talk about writing for this project and The Wombats, talk about the heritage of great scouse bands (there's a few), playing live, living in LA, and much more. Even for a writer beloved by his fans for being so frank and open about his romantic failings, tempestuous marriage and issues with drugs and depression, Life Is A Killer is Murph's truest and most lyrically raw album to date, documenting one of the most difficult years of his life. As the now sober songwriter navigates his way through balancing life as a new father of two and touring the world with The Wombats, he explores the mental struggles of managing family life amid self-destructive excess. Written in between London and LA, Murph enlisted the help of producers Jacknife Lee (U2, The Killers) and Mark Crew (Bastille, Rag N Bone Man, The Wombats) to push his sonic boundaries further than ever, with new sounds and even voice notes from his wife Akemi. As singer, guitarist and primary songwriter of The Wombats, Murph has sold over a million albums, garnered nearly 2 billion streams, and, in 2022 secured his first ever UK #1 album with the acclaimed Fix Yourself, Not The World. Thank you to Murph, Charlie and Murph's dog for coming on and support with this episode. See you very soon for season six.

I would say I have finally gotten to amaetur level of doing my makeup and that's saying something. I am in complete awe of anyone who can do their makeup, but what I am really fascinated by are makeup artists in the film industry. It requires so much attention to detail and collaboration. They are designing each character's look, applying makeup products on actors' faces and bodies and using prosthetics to create special makeup effects. I welcome the talented makeup artist, Akemi Nakashima who does makeup for film and theater. Akemi was nominated by the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards for Best Contemporary Makeup for a Feature-Length Motion Picture, Captain Fantastic, she has also worked on makeup and hair for a Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' video, Dance off, and commercials for Amazon and Adidas.

No matter who you are, chances are you've struggled with body image at some point in life. For children, thoughts of inadequacy can begin early, especially if they have a parent or caregiver who speaks negatively about themselves. On this episode of Raising Joy, Cook Children's psychiatrist Akemi Watkins, M.D., joins us to talk about fostering a healthy mindset about body image, for both children and ourselves. She also tackles tough questions like what to do if a family member feels it's OK to comment on the body size of others – and how we can help kids and teens navigate the filtered world of social media. We also delve into the real dangers of children seeking validation outside of themselves, especially online. If you're a parent or someone who cares about a child in your life, this episode is for you. Raising Joy is part of Cook Children's Health Care System's Joy Campaign, a communications initiative aimed at preventing youth suicides. Akemi Kawabata, Melbourne comedian, is originally from Osaka, Japan. Her style is cheeky & “naughty”. She's lots of fun to watch and hang out with. We discuss how she first came here 26 years ago on a working holiday visa, and knew very quickly that she wanted to stay here. She hardly spoke a word of English when she first arrived and studied hard to become an interpreter and work in Tourism. We talk about the Japanese drumming group she played with in Melbourne, connecting with people here, cultural differences between Japan and Australia, family violence and finding her voice in comedy after being silenced all her life in Japan. Akemi has overcome many obstacles to be where she is today. She rejected the only narrative given to her in Japan, made the break, took the risks and now lives the life that she wants to live here in Melbourne. Inspired by a friend here in Melbourne, who did open mic comedy, Akemi completed a stand up comedy course at the end of 2019. Not a great time to start comedy, in retrospect. Nonetheless, Akemi has been gigging regularly (when the venues have been open) and we met at Yes All Women's at The Highlander Bar in 2020. Off stage Akemi can be a bit introverted, so this podcast is a great opportunity to get to know her better. There sure are some Uncomfortable Truths in Akemi's story! I feel very privileged that Akemi was so honest with me. That's one thing about becoming a comedian – you become more comfortable talking about some brutal truths about yourself, especially if you can make them funny. I find 2 things happen for me when hearing about other people's challenges and difficulties from the past. Firstly, I have great respect for that person, because I see what they have had to overcome to be who they are. Secondly, I feel gratitude. Whether it's being able bodied, or not having suffered through family violence, I feel gratitude for things that I just always took for granted. I play you out with a song called Sleepy Seas because it's been hot lately and I just feel like calm, chilled track is the way to go at the moment. If you've enjoyed this episode, please give me a good rating at Apple or Spotify – really helps with the algorithms. Thanks folks. Enjoy the podcast.

In this episode, Steve talks with Akemi Dalvi, CPA, CFP from Kondo Wealth Advisors about serving a niche community and fostering meaningful multi-generational conversations. After graduating college with a degree in accounting, Akemi did what many other graduates do: she joined a big four firm. Craving more meaning and a healthier work-life balance, she joined her father at Kondo Wealth, the advisory firm he started. At her father's firm, she specializes in helping Asian Americans plan for retirement and achieve long-term financial goals. At Kondo, Akemi realized the importance of including every generation in the financial conversation. When clients reach retirement, their primary concern is ensuring their children have a smoother transition than they did. Akemi talks with Steve about overcoming the financial taboo prevalent in so many Asian American households, the power of community and education in fostering the financial conversation, and her father's best financial advice. “There are a lot of people who are technically able to help any one of our clients with their finances, but money is so personal that it's the intangible soft touch that is what they're really vetting us for at these events. And then once they feel like that's somebody I could really open up to about my finances, that's what opens the door to a long-term relationship.” ~ Akemi Dalvi Main Takeaways COVID-19 created more pathways for multi-generational planning. The pandemic emphasized the importance of planning while virtual meetings allowed younger generations a sneak-peak into their parents' financial plans. These natural conversations helped parents feel like their kids were assisting without taking over. Younger clients find value in goals-based financial planning. If you can successfully guide younger clients through goals-based planning, they become an ideal client in the long-term. It's important to view planning through a multi-generational lens because plans will always impact multiple generations. Whether the situation is good or bad, clear communication is always critical.
