On April 1st, well-known Ukrainian photojournalist Maks Levin, was found dead close to Kyiv, where he was reporting on the Russian invasion. Levin was shot by Russian armed forces; unarmed and wearing a press jacket. Maks Levin, was the 7th journalist killed in Ukraine since February 24th. Yevheniy Sakun, Viktor Dedov, Brent Renaud, Pierre Zakrzewski, Oleksandra Kuvshynova & Oksana Baulina all lost their lives while covering the Russian offensive. A quarter of all journalists killed worldwide since the start of the year. What efforts are made by organisations such as the European Federation of Journalists and Brussels Press Club to support journalists and reporters in Ukraine? What measures can the international community implement to provide assistance to journalists covering the invasion? And what more can be done to protect journalists in the country and in exile? To discuss these and other questions, and highlight the extremely dangerous conditions reporters in Ukraine are working in, Géopolis/Euradio invited Ricardo Gutierrez (General Secretary of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ)), and Alia Papageorgiou (President Press Club Brussels Europe, now Kyiv Press Club), for a public radio show at L'Ascenseur in Brussels. Mediaite editor in chief Aidan McLaughlin speaks with Jane Ferguson, a special correspondent for PBS NewsHour and contributor to the New Yorker. Ferguson arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine less than two weeks ago, the same day documentary filmmaker Brent Renaud was killed by Russian forces. Ferguson and McLaughlin discuss the dangers of reporting from Ukraine, how she copes with covering war, and why so many journalists seem to be caught in the crossfire in this particular conflict. Ferguson, an experienced foreign correspondent, has covered wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia.
On March 13, filmmaker and journalist Brent Renaud was shot and killed while working on a project about refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. He was the first American journalist to die in the conflict. Brent Renaud, who often worked alongside his brother Craig Renaud, grew up in Little Rock. The Renaud Brothers were the recipients of numerous awards for their work, which focused on shedding light on disenfranchised populations in the United States and around the world. The documentary film community in Arkansas and across the United States is mourning the loss of Brent Renaud who was known for his generosity, humility and unflinching desire to portray difficult subjects via an authentic and compassionate lens. On this episode of Capitol & Scott, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette critic and columnist Philip Martin joins Amman Abbasi, an award-winning Pakistani American director, editor and composer from Little Rock who worked on several film projects with the Renaud brothers, to share Brent’s impact on the documentary film industry in Arkansas and beyond. The funeral service for Brent Renaud will be held this Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church in Little Rock Music for this episode, "Fragmented Earth" by Amman Abbasi, was provided by Amman Abbasi.
As the war in Ukraine rages on, and just days after American journalist Brent Renaud was killed, President Zelensky delivered a historic address to the United State Congress. He again called on America and President Biden to enforce a no-fly zone. And to send MiG fighter jets. And our government has said they still will not. That may change. But for now, today, after the standing ovation from Congress, Zelensky got a big fat American NO to his top requests. But he didn't leave empty handed. He got a new injection of American firepower totalling almost $1B dollars. We dig into what that includes, how it will be used, and what could happen next–as only experienced, next-generation national security and military analysts can. And in this pod, we've got two of the best. Jason Dempsey (@Jason_K_Dempsey) is a bad-ass warrior-scholar. A former Army infantryman with a PhD in politics who loves beer and bikes. A professor, author, researcher, combat veteran and one of the country's foremost experts on civil-military relations, Jason is West Point graduate, a PhD, and Adjunct Senior Fellow of the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) and a powerful voice that must be heard. He led units on the ground in Afghanistan, served inside the White House, and literally wrote the book on the modern United states military: Our Army: Soldiers, Politics, and American Civil-Military Relations. He's also a dad, a lover of good beer and no-BS guy who pulls no punches. Jason previously appeared in Episodes 95 (January 14, 2021) and Episode 76 (Sept. 10, 2020). Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) is pulled from the truth beyond the headlines–and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. Rieckhoff is a former Army infantry officer, who knew Brent Renaud for many years. He reflects on the loss and legacy of his friend, and tears into all the latest political news. It's independent content for the 42% of Americans that proudly call themselves independent. And delivers a shot of the Righteous Media 5 Is: independence, integrity, information, inspiration and impact. Always with a unique focus on national security, foreign affairs and military and veterans issues. This is another insightful pod to help you stay vigilant. Because vigilance is the price of democracy. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans will continue to be your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. March 13, 2022, 18 days of war. We take a step back and get you caught up on where we are in Ukraine - what cities have fallen to Russian forces, what exactly is an oblast, and what is Russia trying to accomplish? This episode is also about the international press - namely, those journalists inside Ukraine who risk their lives to bring us firsthand accounts on the war. Today, it was announced that American journalist Brent Renaud was shot and killed by Russian troops. The photographer accompanying him, Juan Arredondo, was also shot but survived. Two active journalists have been killed in Ukraine, several more have been shot, attacked, and robbed by Russian troops. We appreciate the work they do, the stories they tell, the risks they take.

Award-winning American journalist Brent Renaud was killed by Russian forces in the Ukrainian city of Irpin, police in Kyiv said in social media posts on Sunday. Another American journalist was reported wounded. In a tweet, Kyiv region police identified the dead man as Renaud, who was 50. Police posted a photo of his body and his American passport as evidence, as well as a photo of an outdated New York Times press badge with Renaud's name.Head of the Kyiv region police Andriy Nebitov said in a Facebook post that Russian forces shot Renaud, adding that "the occupants cynically kill even journalists of international media, who've been trying to tell the truth about atrocities of Russian military in Ukraine.""Of course, journalism carries risks, but the US citizen Brent Renaud paid with his life for an attempt to shed light on how underhand, cruel, and merciless the aggressor is," Nebitov added.Nebitov said that two more journalists were injured, adding that "the injured have been already saved and moved to a hospital in the capital. What condition they are in is unknown at the moment."One of the wounded journalists is believed to be Colombian-American photographer Juan Arredondo, who is now in hospital, according to social media video and international media reports.Social media footage has emerged of a journalist identified as Juan Arredondo at Okhmatdyt hospital in Kyiv, in which he describes being shot at by Russian forces while driving through a checkpoint in Irpin on the way to film refugees leaving the city."There was two of us, my friend Brent Renaud. And he's been shot and left behind," Arredondo said in the video, adding that Renaud was shot in the neck. "We got split and I got pulled into the [points to stretcher] ...an ambulance, I don't know."Arredondo, a filmmaker and visual journalist who is also an adjunct professor at Columbia Journalism School, posted photos from Zhytomyr, Ukraine on Saturday, noting in an Instagram post that he is "#onassignment."The Dean of Columbia Journalism School, Steve Coll, told CNN: "We don't have any independent information about his injuries at this time but are working now to learn more and to see if we can help."Arredondo is a 2019 Harvard Nieman fellow. He has previously had his photography featured in The New York Times, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, ESPN, Vanity Fair, and other media outlets, according to his personal website bio.An adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, Anton Gerashchenko, said in a statement on Telegram that Renaud "paid with his life for attempting to expose the insidiousness, cruelty and ruthlessness of the aggressor."CNN has been unable to verify which media outlet the American journalists were working for in Ukraine. Police did not name the injured journalist.Tributes to RenaudThe New York Times said in a statement on Sunday, "We are deeply saddened to hear of Brent Renaud's death. Brent was a talented filmmaker who had contributed to The New York Times over the years. Though he had contributed to The Times in the past (most recently in 2015), he was not on assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine. Early reports that he worked for Times circulated because he was wearing a Times press badge that had been issued for an assignment many years ago."The northern Ukrainian city of Irpin, just outside Kyiv, has been the site of substantial Russian shelling in recent days and has seen extensive destruction, according to the Kyiv regional government on Friday.Renaud was a Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker, producer, and journalist, who lived and worked in New York City and Little Rock, Arkansas, according to his biography on the Renaud Brothers website. With his brother Craig, Renaud spent years "telling humanistic verite stories from the World's hot spots," including projects in Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, Egypt, and Libya,...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
