Guest: Janne Mende (Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law) This episode delves into the US Supreme Court's 2022 decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion, a ruling that sparked intense national protest and division. Janne Mende and Christopher Murphy analyse the decision, connecting it to the concept of norm decoupling, which describes the increasing separation of liberal-democratic norms from their traditional interpretations and applications. The discussion then turns to whether the handling of abortion rights in the US is indicative of a more general backsliding of liberal-democratic norms.
Guest: Marthe Goudsmit Samaritter. This episode looks more closely at the deeply concerning issue of image-based sexual abuse (IBSA). IBSA involves the non-consensual recording, sharing, or distribution of private sexual images or videos – a violation that can have devastating consequences for victims. To help understand what—if anything—can be undertaken to stop the spread and harm caused by IBSA, Christopher Murphy is joined by Marthe Goudsmit Samaritter to explore not only the impact of IBSA on victims but also to discuss the legal, ethical, and social dimensions of this crime.
On season 10 episode 3 of Paid in Puke, we're playing with Matt Betinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's 2019 horror comedy, “Ready or Not” starring Samara Weaving, Andi McDowell, Adam Brody, and Mark O'Brien. It was written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. Olpin and Gilette also joined Busick for "Abigail", the 2022 Scream reboot, and "Scream VI". “Ready or Not” tells the story of Grace, a plucky woman from a modest background, who learns, on the night of her wedding to the heir of a board game empire, that she must play a life-or-death game of Hide and Seek with her new in-laws. It's Keggers with Kids all this episode, as Amy's child, Dash, joins us to talk about why this is one of his favorite horror films, and how it stacks up against Betinelli-Olpin and Gillett's other films. The "Ready or Not" script is a rare example of tight perfection, symmetry, and depth that also manages to walk a horror comedy tightrope. It belongs to a fun micro-genre: Evil People in a Mansion. We also praise Samara Weaving for the fun vibe she brings to her scream queen role, Adam Brody's recent renaissance, and why we've been on the Brody train since David Wain's underrated comedy, "The Ten".
Guest: Antoine Vauchez (University of Paris 1-Sorbonne and Max Planck Law Fellow). On today's episode Christopher Murphy is joined by Antoine Vauchez to focus on the re-invention of a central concept of contemporary European democracy, namely that of “independence”. Antoine - who heads the Max Planck Law Working Group on “Independence and Democracy in the European Union” - traces how the notion of independence has become a highly contested subject within the EU, often culminating in what he terms Europe's independence wars. From the backsliding of the rule of law in Poland or Hungary to the heated debates over the unconventional monetary policies of the “über-independent” European Central Bank, Antoine demonstrates that how we understand and interpret the notion of independence is at the heart of modern political and legal debate in Europe. Guest: Isabel Thielmann In this episode, Christopher Murphy and Isabel Thielmann take a little break from crime to talk about the psychology of personality instead. Isa outlines the various personality traits that make us who we are and, just as importantly, highlights how these traits can be measured in the first place. Thereafter, Isa and Chris talk about how the research being conducted at the MPI-CSL can help to better understand not only personality traits but also how they affect both pro and anti-social behavior.
Guest: Kadir Eryilmaz (Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology). In this episode, Christopher Murphy talks with Kadir Eryilmaz about his ethnographic field research on the Syriacs, a small and often overlooked community from Turkey. They explore how marginalized groups, like the Syriacs, form their understanding of the law and how their experiences shape their views on human rights. Through real-life examples, they discuss how past interactions with legal authorities shape the way people approach the law today.
Guest: Randall Stephenson It is an old adage that words have weight and, once said, they cannot simply be undone. But what if these words are untrue, insulting, or damaging to a person's character, reputation, or integrity? While the legal remedy of defamation certainly exists can it really undo the injustice suffered? In this episode Christopher Murphy talks to Randall Stephenson about defamation in the context of the 2024 US Presidential Election. Together, they look at an election campaign that has been marked by its very personal nature. In discussing how the laws of defamation apply to politics, Randall not only provides insights into the past but also discusses the present and the future, with a particular focus on whether the United States' defamation rules are fit for the contemporary political era. While completing her BFA at Baylor University, Rebekah Danae's fourteen year painting practice was stylistically and thematically influenced by formative experiences in Belgium, studying Rene Magritte's surrealist blend of comedy and peril, and in Texas, learning from Sedrick Huckaby's metaphoric expressions offaith, community, and heritage.Sculpturally— through leatherwork and interior design— Danae's work has been influenced by the cowboy boot making community in Beggs, Oklahoma and the design firm of Christopher Murphy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In practice, Danae draws inspiration from Virgil Abloh, who blurred the lines of art and commerce through the tools of contemporary culture; Rebecca Belmore's ability to elicit intimate moments of reflection while tackling tremendous contemporary issues; the liberatory mysticism of Afrofuturism philosophy; the fiber artists of the wearable art movement in the 70s; and from the community-based relational practice of Rick Lowe.Through her work, Rebekah Danae and A Creative House orchestrate a movement in the middle of the country, made up of a diverse creative choir. Far from a lone ranger, Danae works collaboratively across a curated network of Oklahomans— from the punk underground, homegrown rappers and producers, luxury interior designers, rodeo cowboys, rural bootmakers, to philanthropic, political, and educational leaders. Her approach, while whimsical and surreal, has the intended impact of critical regional culture-shaping from the current white supremacy that is prevalent regionally today and toward a co-created futurist Oklahoma, the liberated West.

We discuss a true touchstone of our childhood Halloweens: The Simpsons' inaugural Treehouse of Horror episode from 1990, then we preview Samantha's Spooktober pick: the 2019 horror/comedy Ready or Not! Stay spooky, friends. Stay Spooky. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa "Treehouse of Horror" is the third episode of the second season of the American animated television series The Simpsons. It originally aired on Fox in the United States on October 25, 1990. The episode was inspired by 1950s horror comics, and begins with a disclaimer that it may be too scary for children. It is the first Treehouse of Horror episode. These episodes do not obey the show's rule of realism and are not treated as canon. The plot revolves around three scary stories told by the Simpson children in the family's treehouse. The first segment involves a haunted house that is based on various haunted house films, primarily The Amityville Horror (1979) and Poltergeist (1982). In the second segment, Kang and Kodos are introduced when the Simpsons are abducted by aliens. The third segment is an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's 1845 poem "The Raven". James Earl Jones guest starred in all three segments. The episode was received positively, being included in several critics' "best of" lists. Critics singled out The Raven for praise, although Simpsons creator Matt Groening was concerned that it would be seen as pretentious. Ready or Not is a 2019 American dark comedy horror film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. It stars Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O'Brien, Elyse Levesque, Nicky Guadagni, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell. It follows a young bride who is hunted by her spouse's wealthy family as part of a wedding night ritual to worship the Devil.

Guest: Rick Sallaba (Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy). It has been over a year now since the German government introduced Bürgergeld. The reforms present a major reworking of Germany's unemployment benefits system. While Bürgergeld has done away with a number of sanctions that were deemed unfair and counterproductive, not everyone is impressed by this new approach to unemployment and serious concerns have been raised that the benefits are now too attractive (and expensive). To break the concept of Bürgergeld down with more reason and less emotion, Christopher Murphy is today joined in the studio by the legal scholar Rick Sallaba. (Audio Production: www.citysoundstudio.de)
Guest: Florian Kaiser In this episode, Christopher Murphy talks with Florian Kaiser about research on the socio-psychological consequences of criminal victimization. After discussing how to conduct relevant research on this topic, Florian provides insights into some key research findings on the impact of victimization. The episode goes on to highlight the limitations of existing research and the various policy implications from recent work conducted at the Institute.
Guest: Ragini Surana (Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory). Suppose you pay someone more than you intended to by mistake. What rule of law can be used to rectify the situation? It is not the law of contract because neither of you anticipated this possibility. Nor is it a tort because neither of you have committed a wrong. In this episode Christopher Murphy talks with Ragini Surana about the law of restitution for unjust enrichment with a particular analysis of the introduction and application of the law in India. In “The Abyss”, after a U.S. nuclear submarine is lost at sea, the U.S. Navy enlists the help of a crew of an underwater oil drilling platform to help find it. A team of Navy SEALs, led by Michael Biehn as Lieutenant Coffey, is sent down to the crew to lead the rescue operation. Unbeknownst to the crew, led by Ed Harris as Bud Brigman and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Lindsey, the SEALs have another possible mission. A mission that is deadly for all. On top of that, during the rescue operation, deep sea otherworldly beings start appearing and ratcheting up the already high tension even more. Are these otherworldly beings friend or foe? Then to elevate the tension even more, Lieutenant Coffey starts acting psychotic due to pressure sickness from being deep undersea. Not the development you want, especially with a guy in possession of nuclear warheads. Where is this flashpoint going to end up? Is it worth watching to find out? Watch this retro review episode to find out. “The Abyss” is the movie James Cameron made between “Aliens” and “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” and I'll talk all about it in this episode. “The Abyss” also stars Leo Burmester, Todd Graff, John Bedford Lloyd, J.C. Quinn, Kimberly Scott, Captain Kidd Brewer Jr., George Robert Klek, Christopher Murphy, Adam Nelson, Dick Warlock, Jimmie Ray Weeks, J. Kenneth Campbell, Ken Jenkins, Chris Elliott and Peter Ratray. Guest: Philipp Sauter (Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law). In this episode Christopher Murphy talks with Philipp Sauter about nuclear fusion. As opposed to nuclear fission, i.e., splitting a heavy atomic nucleus into smaller nuclei, nuclear fusion uses the opposite approach to combine - or fuse - light atomic nuclei into heavier ones. Through recent scientific breakthroughs the possibility of using nuclear fusion to provide the world with a practically inexhaustible source of green energy has become tantalisingly close. Consequently, the time is right to discuss how this tremendous power should be best regulated to ensure maximum safety while not stifling scientific ingenuity. Guest: Nadjma Yassari (Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law). In this episode Christopher Murphy learns from Nadjma Yassari, head of the Research Group 'Changes in God's Law' at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg, how societal beliefs and assumptions on the role of mothers and fathers have led legislatures in Germany and Iran to accept or reject egg donation to overcome infertility. Listen in and find out the answers to all these questions and a whole lot more.
Guest: Erica Ollikainen-Read (Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory). In this episode of the Lawcast, Erica Ollikainen-Read explains to Christopher Murphy that the British Empire was not just shipping, merchants, soldiers, cannon, and conquest. Rather, some of the most long-lasting parts of the British Empire are the ideas, laws, and symbols which Britain transplanted to their colonies, some of which remain to this day. One such case in point is India, where the British colonial presence and the nature of Britain's priorities shifted over time. By viewing the law from the perspective of communication, we can see how colonial legal culture and the way in which it was used as a tool for control in India also changed. The Act reflected the prevailing moral sensibilities of the time, regarding who the worthy and the unworthy poor were and where the boundaries of welfare responsibility were to be drawn. After providing an overview of the legislation, the focus turns to the implementation of this welfare system in the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick during the mid-18th and 19th century. The episode centres on the positive and negative aspects of both consent models, drawing upon examples from recent German and Spanish legal reforms. (Audio Production: www.citysoundstudio.de)
After Godzilla leapt to the big screen in 1954, he quickly became Japan's most recognizable pop culture expression of lasting trauma and remorse over the nuclear end of their involvement in WWII. In the 1960s, Godzilla-inspired kaiju movies took this same metaphor of an unstoppable destructive force that indiscriminately kills both the innocent and the guilty with equal fury, and made it fun! Carlo Vanstiphout of Back Row Cinema and CRUD Buddies shares his expertise on his favorite era of Japanese monster movies and help us understand how Japan learned to stop worrying and love the atomic monsters. While Godzilla is discussed in detail, Carlo focuses mostly on Big G's Toho friends, as well as a certain fire-powered turtle and a stone giant from Daiei (Toho Studio's main kaiju competition). In this episode, Carlo navigates through the several dozen kaiju movies made in the Sixties and chooses six that he truly enjoys and thinks best represent what was happening in the genre at the time. Left to their own devices, Bart and Jenna could have blundered through these movies and perhaps drawn a few conclusions about the appeal of rubber monsters in the ‘60s. But thankfully Carlo is on hand to explain what the hell is going on in these colorful, outrageously fun, and often perplexing batch of films. The following films are discussed:• Mothra (1961) モスラ Directed by Ishirô Honda Starring Furankî Sakai, Hiroshi Koizumi, Kyôko Kagawa• Frankenstein vs. Baragon (a.k.a. Frankenstein Conquers The World) (1965) フランケンシュタイン対地底怪獣 Directed by Ishirô Honda Starring Nick Adams, Kumi Mizuno, Tadao Takashima• Daimajin (1966) 大魔神 Directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda Starring Miwa Takada, Yoshihiko Aoyama, Jun Fujimaki• Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (a.k.a. Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster) (1966) ゴジラ・エビラ・モスラ 南海の大決闘 Directed by Jun Fukuda Starring Akira Takarada, Kumi Mizuno, Chôtarô Tôgin• King Kong Escapes (1967) キングコングの逆襲 Directed by Ishirô Honda Starring Rhodes Reason, Mie Hama, Linda Miller• Gamera vs. Guiron (1969) ガメラ対大悪獣ギロン Directed by Noriaki Yuasa Starring Nobuhiro Kajima, Miyuki Akiyama, Christopher Murphy

Its director, Christopher Murphy, credits the success of the play to the dedication and commitment of the twenty-five young actors who have been tirelessly working on the program throughout the pandemic. Pictured below is one of the lead actors, Margaret Gaughan, getting into character as Tumnus, who she describes as "a funny little goat man who is nervous all the time." WBOI Artcentric is brought to you by WBOI's own Julia Meek and Ben Clemmer. Our theme music is “Me voy pal campo'' by KelsiCote. Our administrative assistants are Olivia Fletter and Keegan Lee. Our production assistants are Monica Blankenship, Steve Mullaney, and Sydney Wagner.
WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH PERPETRATOR TREATMENT? After a domestic violence arrest, perpetrators are often ordered into treatment by the courts. Treatment? That implies there is a cure. Or does it? Turns out treatment is not the panacea we would hope it is, but it may do some good. The discussion around the effectiveness of intimate partner abuser treatment is one that has been going on for a while. Does treatment help or not? The answer isn’t so simple. Just as there are different types of perpetrators, there are also different types of and approaches to treatment. Christopher Murphy, PhD, psychology professor at University of Maryland Baltimore County, and director of a counselling program for domestic violence offenders, has spent most of his career studying perpetrators and the strategies and programs used to treat them. Join us as we discuss the benefits and failures of treatment, who goes to treatment, and some of the innovative approaches to treating these perpetrators. Airing for the first time, Saturday, March 20, at 11 AM Pacific Time, and available thereafter through the archive at www.blogtalkradio.com/3women3ways.
A black teenage boy is dead. A white man shot him. Was he standing his ground or was it murder? Janice Johnson is living every black mother’s nightmare. Her seventeen-year-old son was murdered and the shooter has not been arrested. Can the D.A. and the police be trusted to investigate and do the right thing? Should Janice take advantage of the public outcry and join her husband alongside the angry protestors who are out for revenge? Meredith Spencer is married to the man accused of the killing and she sees her husband and the situation with far more clarity than anyone realizes. What she knows could blow the case wide open, but what will that mean for her life and that of her son? Will she have the courage to come forward in time so that justice can be done?
Fort Wayne Youtheatre will be presenting the local premiere of Frozen Jr., December 6th, at First Presbterian Theater. As one of the largest productions the group has undertaken in many years, it features 36 young actors from across northeast Indiana, as well as original puppet creations by Youtheatre's Executive Director, Todd Espeland. WBOI's Julia Meek sat down with the play's director, Christopher Murphy and one of the lead actors, Emmy Conner, to discuss the particulars of putting together this production and the timeless appeal of the story itself. WBOI Artcentric is brought to you by WBOI's own Julia Meek and Ben Clemmer. Our theme music is “Me voy pal campo” by KelsiCote. Our administrative assistants are Olivia Fletter and Brittany Smith. Our production assistants are Monica Blankenship and Mikaela Veltum.
Fort Wayne Youtheatre has been getting creative with its virtual programming since the earliest days of COVID-19 restrictions and now it's getting ready to resume "in person" activities, summer camp-style. The group has partnered with the Fort Wayne Dance Collective to devise a safe and socially distanced four-day program with a focus on acting technique and characterization as well as movement fundamentals and musical theater choreography. For a behind the scenes look at how all of this has come together, WBOI's Julia Meek spoke with directors Todd Espeland and Christopher Murphy about the community aspects of its mission, the creative ways they are meeting the Coronavirus pandemic challenges and what lies ahead for the young theatrical troupe. WBOI Artcentric is brought to you by WBOI's own Julia Meek and Ben Clemmer. Our theme music is “Me voy pal campo” by KelsiCote. Our administrative assistants are Keegan Lee and Brittany Smith. Our production assistants are Monica Blankenship and Mikaela Veltum.

This week we’re getting the family back together for a quiet games night, googling ‘How to Use a Crossbow’ and sacrificing a goat or two, all while discussing the new horror-comedy ‘Ready or Not’. Ready or Not is a 2019 American black comedy horror film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. The film stars Samara Weaving as a newlywed who becomes hunted by her spouse's family as part of their wedding night ritual. Mark O'Brien portrays her husband, with Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell as members of his family. The week’s Unfinished Business was recorded live at The Web Is… conference in Cardiff, as part of Geek Mental Help week. I was joined on-stage by Christopher Murphy, Cole Henley, Relly Annett-Baker and Dr. Clare Symons to talk about a wide range of mental heath and mental illness issues. I put the lower audio quality this week down to everyone wearing lapel, not using condenser microphones, (sorry about that,) but recording live in front of an audience was fun, and I’ll definitely do it again. There are no sponsors this week, as it didn’t seem appropriate.
