What Was That Like

Have you ever been awakened in the middle of the night because something terrible was happening?   It's definitely not a pleasant way to wake up. This happened to a 27 year old man named Nick, and he wrote about it on social media –   I was sleeping at my girlfriend's house last night. Usually we pass out around midnight, but last night we didn't get to sleep until around 1:30 or so. It was around 3am when I woke up and swear I saw someone's head peeking in & staring at us through the bedroom door. Adrenaline shot through my entire body. I went into complete fight mode - I got up and charged towards the door, with my loyal, badass dog following right behind me. As I ran out and looked around, I didn't see anyone. My dog and I probably looked around for a solid minute until I finally snapped out of it and realized it had just been a dream. And the fact my dog wasn't going ape shit brought me out of it as well.   The thing is, even if it turns out to be nothing, for most people it's still going to be difficult to get back to sleep.   My guest today is Tina – she's a wife, and a mother. She was awakened in the middle of the night, and it wasn't a false alarm. What woke her up was an ACTUAL alarm. Tina's house was on fire.   If you'd like to contact Tina, she's in the WWTL Facebook group.   Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/231   Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Okay I'm going to read a quote, “If you're not paying attention to how you affect other people, you're missing a big piece of what makes life work. What you don't know about yourself can hurt you, others, and your relationships.” This wise quote is from Suzanne Stabile, of course. This feels so true and it feels exactly why we're diving into what we're diving into over the next several weeks. It honestly feels appropriate that we would kick off this part of the Parenting Personalities series on the Enneagram with a quote from our dear friend, Suzanne Stabile. Because we would both say that she has hands down taught us the most about the Enneagram. She's our favorite Enneagram teacher, and so we're going to be quoting her all throughout this time and sharing things we've learned through all of her decades of studying this great ancient wisdom tool. We're excited to bring all that we've learned through her and how we see that walked out in parenting. We talked about this recently, but why wouldn't we want to grow? Those of us who love kids or in relationship to anyone else, in fact we would love for you to share these episodes with your kids' grandparents, with aunts and uncles, with educators. Really anybody in your life, you don't have to be a parent, to hopefully learn from and glean from the growth and grace that's going to weave all throughout these conversations.  Book recommendation mentioned in episode: "The Road Back to You" by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile . . . . . .  Owen Learns He Has What it Takes: A Lesson in Resilience Lucy Learns to Be Brave: A Lesson in Courage More Links: Sign up to receive the monthly newsletter to keep up to date with where David and Sissy are speaking, where they are taco'ing, PLUS conversation starters for you and your family to share! When I started this podcast more than seven years ago, the primary factor was based on just one fundamental concept: the impact of a good story.   For each What Was That Like main episode, you hear a story. The guest is telling the story of what happened. Many of the stories are traumatic, many include loss and grief, and there are those that are happy as well. Even the heavy stories often end on a positive note. But the common factor is that they are all things that actually happened. The guest is talking about an actual thing that they experienced.   The story you're about to hear in this episode would fall into the category of fiction.   In a recent episode, my guest was David, and he was talking about being in the extremely cold north, and not being able to find a cabin that he knew was nearby. That one is episode 225, called “David couldn't find the cabin”. In that episode, I opened with the first few lines from one of my favorite short stories – To Build A Fire, by Jack London. Reading just that short section made me want to read the full story again.   And that's what I'm doing in today's episode. Jack London is my favorite author, and I love this story because he really puts us in the mind of this man, and his thought process, and his range of emotions.   So we'll first have a quick break for a couple of sponsors who make the show possible, and then we'll get into this story. Please enjoy this amazing work by Jack London… To Build A Fire.     Want to discuss this episode and other things with thousands of other WWTL listeners? Okay you guys, Buckle up! We just interviewed Dr. Kevin Leman, whose work on Birth Order, we have talked about, referenced, more times than we could possibly count. We are so excited about having this conversation with him. We knew without a doubt we'd learn a lot. We were not expecting to laugh as much as we did. And we were doubled over in some moments. He is so funny, which will make more sense when he talks about his birth order and how that translates to often be true for that particular birth order.  Now stick around to the end, because he threw out some incredible wisdom of what to say to kids: who want everything to be fair, and how to navigate allowance, expectations and bed time unique to birth order. And stick around because he gave David a really hard time about being a 1st born. He teased him hard and so I never said that I was too, I just laughed along! Ya'll are going to love this episode! . . . . . If you're trying to sort out some hard things this fall, if you're trying to figure out what you need to store up for the winter, if you're wanting to hang out to the changing leaves as long as possible before they die…. Well, I really think you're going to love this one. Today we'll answer the question, “What is the fall and how do I define it in my life?” Pastor Mike Kelsey's wise voice is helping us think about the beauty we can find in the fall even when things feel like they're changing so much. We're starting to look at what things to store up for the winter and ultimately asking God what it looks like to flourish in every single season, including the fall. We're on page 107 in your TSF Seasons Guidebook (You can order and download your copy at anniefdowns.com/seasons).  ALSO, we could use your input as we think about the podcast next year! Would you fill that out this survey today and help us as we build and dream for next year? How scary would it be, if you suddenly lost your ability to speak?   There was a story in the news about a man named Peter. When Peter was 73 years old, he had a stroke. He survived the stroke, but he found that he could no longer speak. And it looked like that condition was permanent, because after 4 years, he still had no voice.   But then, Peter was on vacation with his wife Carol, and their son Jonathan. And one day Peter just woke up, and he was able to speak again. He just started speaking, and Carol said, “Peter, you're speaking!” Then she said, “Don't stop, keep talking! It might go away again!”   Jonathan was in the next room and heard two people having a conversation and came rushing in wondering what was happening. They all started crying and laughing at the same time. It was a very emotional time because it had been so long.   Later that day, Peter found out that he had had ANOTHER stroke. They wondered if whatever damage the first stroke had done, was now UNdone by the second stroke. Doctors were doubtful of that, but even they didn't have an explanation. Peter is just happy to have his voice back.   My guest today is Vanessa. She experienced something similar – some kind of sudden, mysterious condition that showed up with multiple symptoms, including taking away her voice.   What makes Vanessa's story even more fascinating is her career – she's a speech therapist.   If you'd like to contact Vanessa: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/speechless_slp/?hl=en   Her book: Speechless: How a Speech Therapist Lost Her Ability to Speak and Her Silent Struggle to Reclaim Her Voice and Life – https://www.amazon.com/Speechless-Therapist-Ability-Struggle-Reclaim/dp/B0DS96R6XT     Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/230   Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. We're jumping back in with another episode in our Parenting Personalities series, and we are excited about this episode! This episode is on Birth Order, and can I tell you something fun that I love to do. When kids come for their very first visit at Daystar, we call it an assessment. We take kids on a tour around the Daystar house, they get to meet the dogs, we get them a snack, and we sit down to talk. We meet with their parents at a later point. During my time with just the kid, I love to not look at the paperwork, which would inform where they would fall in birth order and try and make a guess.  I don't want to brag on myself, but I'm going to say that I have a pretty high percentage. I have a strong batting average in that space. I think it's the reality of us having done this work for a lot of decades. Knowing so many of the things we're about to talk about with birth order and seeing little lumps as watching where kids may drop some crumbs, that's really fun to do. Listen in as we will share two primary things about oldest daughters and oldest sons, children who fall in the middle, and the youngest kids in birth order and all of their coping strategies.  Recommended books to read: Braver, Stronger, Smarter by: Sissy Goff (For parents with daughters in younger years and elementary grades) Brave by: Sissy Goff (For parents of daughters in Middle school and High school) Growth Mindset by: Carol Dweck  (For parents of 1st born sons and daughters)   The Gifts of Perfection by: Brene Brown (For parents who are 1st borns) . . . . . So hang in there to the very end, this episode is packed full of good stuff! Questions Holley recommends you ask the family members in your home: What does happiness feel to you? What would make this (Christmas) holiday feel happy to you? What would make this vacation/holiday feel happy to you? What do you think would make it hardest for you? What is one thing you want to make sure we do? What is one thing you're worried that we may have to do? How can I keep the stimulation of this event at a manageable level for my kid? Where is your level at right now, what do you need to feel more comfortable? How can I love you well right now? What is one small shift/step that we can make as a family today? Tyler W. LeBaron, MSc, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Molecular Hydrogen Institute. With a background in biochemistry, physiology, and exercise science, he teaches exercise physiology and chemistry labs at Southern Utah University as an adjunct instructor. He interned at Nagoya University in Japan's Department of Neurogenetics, researching the molecular mechanisms of hydrogen gas on cell-signaling pathways. Tyler is a director of both the International Hydrogen Standards Association (IHSA) and the International Molecular Hydrogen Association (IMHA). He speaks at medical and academic conferences worldwide, collaborates with researchers globally, and works to advance the education and awareness of hydrogen as a therapeutic medical gas. Outside the lab, he trains in running and competes in arm wrestling. Alex Tarnava is a self-taught scientist, inventor, and author whose work bridges biomedical innovation, sovereign health, and philosophical disruption. He invented the world’s only open-cup molecular hydrogen tablet—a patented delivery system that has become the most studied and widely adopted form of hydrogen therapy, featured in over 21 published clinical trials. Alex has co-authored 17 peer-reviewed papers, with more in press and under review. He is also the co-inventor—alongside Tyler—of Inhale H₂, the first safe and effective hydrogen inhalation system. His leadership in the field led the Molecular Hydrogen Institute (MHI) to appoint him as the first chairman of its Research Committee. I was traveling recently, and I got in this Uber and started talking to the driver, and when I heard his voice I said, “Kevin, you need to have a podcast!” I don't know if he'll do that, but he did graciously agree to record that quick opener for me, just before I got out of his car.   438 – keep  that number in your head and I'll come back to it in a minute.   By now you have probably figured out, this episode is not going to be the typical type of episode where I talk with someone who has been through some kind of unusual situation. I'll be back here in a week with one of those stories.   But today, you're about to hear an episode from the Raw Audio series. You may have heard me talk about the Raw Audio episodes in the past, but you might not have actually heard one of these episodes unless you're a paid supporter of the podcast – which many of you are, and I appreciate that.   When you sign up to support the show, one of the benefits of that subscription is the bonus content – these are the Raw Audio episodes. They're called that because they are truly raw, and real life. You're gonna hear actual 911 emergency calls, and the story that goes with that call. This is about as authentic as it gets.   And you might notice that throughout this episode, you will not hear any ad breaks. The Raw Audio episodes never have ads. And not just that, but as a paid supporter, you won't hear any ads on ANY of the What Was That Like episodes.   If you enjoy this episode, I invite you to sign up to support the show. Remember that number I mentioned a minute ago, 438? That's how many listeners are already supporters. They subscribe for a few dollars each month, so they get to hear ALL the Raw Audio episodes and never any ads. And right now there are 52 Raw Audio episodes live and ready for you to binge when you sign up and become supporter number 439.   After you hear these three stories, I'll come back in to let you know exactly how you can subscribe, because there are a few different ways you can do it, depending on what kind of phone you have and what app you use to listen to podcasts. It's really simple though. But for now, please enjoy this ad-free episode of Raw Audio.     Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. So many of us have walked through unexpected seasons of grief and loss. When those seasons hit, it feels impossible to know how to put one foot in front of the other or we don't know how to best support our friends through it. Today we answer, “What do I do when my season suddenly shifts?” Kate and I met a couple of months ago when I was on the road for a speaking event. She has walked through the tragic death of her adult son and has SO generously agreed to share with us what she wished someone had shared with her when that pain was fresh. Whether you've dealt with a similar situation or you're close to someone who has, I encourage you to lean in to the perspective and encouragement Kate shares with us about what it looks like to honor and grieve and keep living and keep loving even when we don't think we have it in us. On this episode of Let's Try This Again, I finally sit down with my internet sis and incredibly talented content creator, actress, and newly-minted series regular, Jasmine Luv! We talk about everything from her big leap of faith moving from South Carolina to LA (with a master's in accounting!), what it's really like being an OG influencer, staying the course through nearly a decade of "no's," and getting vulnerable about heartbreak, waiting, and letting God lead the way. Do you know, with certainty, how you would react in a time of extreme stress or crisis?   As a 22 year old woman in San Francisco, Betty had not yet decided on a career path. So, while she was figuring out what she wanted to do, she worked at the factory owned by her parents. The factory produced beef jerky. It wasn't really her dream job, but it kept her busy at the time, and she also felt good about helping her parents in their business.   One day, Betty's workplace suddenly became very dangerous. Some people came in to rob the family business – and they were waving guns around. Betty was out front, and one of the first employees to come in contact with the robbers. She never panicked, even as one of the men held a gun to her head. Instead, she calmly called her dad, who was in the back, and said, “Dad, we're being robbed”. The robbers got some money and left, and no one was physically injured.   Betty's nerves of steel would come into play again years later. She was one of the flight attendants on American Airlines flight 11, on September 11, 2001. Today you'll hear her voice, and you'll learn why the 9/11 Commission declared Betty a hero.     Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/228   Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Ya'll it was the first time in history that we have had a contestant from the Bachelor, and let me tell you in my counseling office how many years I've been talking about the Bachelor. So one of my questions was at what age and should moms and girls watch it together. And she had some great thoughts along the line. We are super excited for you to hear this conversation with Madi Prewett Troutt. I want you to stick around to the end. Because there was this incredible moment, where she was talking about if you are parenting a baby you love who is just sitting in a poopy diaper right now covered in food. What that moment could teach you about the heart of  God.
