This episode is for JMOs who are ready to transition and don't want to take a step back in their next business career. In it, we: Define who this is for: JMOs aiming to lead and take on greater responsibility in a Business Leadership Career. Explain the "Traditional Career Search": Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Indeed, USAJOBS, etc. Define the "Non-Traditional Career Search." Explore why JMOs often default to the traditional approach. Share key takeaways and closing thoughts. JMOs are traditional candidates for defense-sector roles, but in the private sector, they are seen as non-traditional candidates. That is why Transition Rule #3 is: Throw Out the Traditional Career Search if you are aiming for upward mobility in business leadership. What is the "Traditional Career Search"? Searching based on past experience: “I have this experience in this industry,” or “I have this degree.” This focuses on what you have done, not your potential for leadership growth. Narrowing your options by what you know: Location or Career Field, or both. “I am a Logistics Officer, and my home of record is Dallas, TX, so I will pursue Logistics in Dallas.” Applying through job boards and online platforms: Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Indeed, USAJOBS. “Networking” that often feels vague or produces unclear outcomes. Important: The traditional search can work well for JMOs staying in defense, where their functional experience directly matches role requirements. But if you are making a hard pivot into business leadership, you need a different approach. The Reality of Online Applications in 2025 Job postings on LinkedIn attract 150 or more applicants. Popular roles see 300 or more. Indeed and Glassdoor listings often draw 200 to 500 candidates for a single role. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) filter out 75% to 90% of résumés before they reach a human. The result? A success rate of only 2% to 5% for landing an interview via online applications. What is the "Non-Traditional Career Search"? A non-traditional search takes a different approach. It focuses on: Highlighting your leadership experience, potential, and ambition as your key value. Embracing a Growth and Investment Mindset. Expanding and comparing multiple opportunities. This does not mean applying to 200 companies but making quality attempts. Consider this: Of the 168 million people in the U.S. workforce, only 1.3 million are active-duty service members. Of those, about 200,000 to 234,000 are officers. JMOs (typically O-1 to O-3, with some O-4s) make up about 100,000 to 140,000. That is less than 0.1% of the total U.S. workforce. JMOs are a specialized leadership talent pool. Their skills are highly valuable but often overlooked by traditional hiring methods. The key is getting in front of companies that recognize your unique potential. The Big Question If you are a JMO pivoting to business, ask yourself: Do you know anyone who has lined up 10 to 12 quality interviews over two days? Interviews with hiring managers and decision-makers that bypass online filters, for roles that match or exceed their current pay and responsibility, and align with their separation timeline? This is what a targeted, quality-driven search looks like. A broad search gives you the power of comparison, helps you gather facts and real data, and puts you in a strong position when it is time to choose between offers. Facing Transition Challenges We know transition is tough. It is full of uncertainty, and it is natural to lean toward a traditional search. Well-meaning advice from family and friends can sometimes miss the mark if they lack expertise. There is also the temptation to choose what is familiar, like a job close to home or with a recognizable title. But those options might not deliver the long-term growth you deserve.

*Interesting Fact of the Week: How many hearts does an octopus have? It's a "trifecta" - three hearts! One regular to pump the blood around the body. And two more to pump the blood past the gills for oxygenation. *Seeing Design Despite Themselves: Hear the latest news from the world of the "random" and purely "naturalistic" science (so-called) of evolution... Perhaps that "random" part isn't as random as they thought! *Half a Billion Years or So: Give or take a billion years or so... The currently fashionable Origin of Life (OOL) theory that declared the "undisputed dawn of photosynthesis" on earth occurred about 500 million years ago, has just been dealt a 1.2 billion year setback. *Royal Truman Vents: Check out Royal Truman's RSR analysis of similar "chemistry fast and loose" being played over in the OOL research community... *It's Telethon Month! Today's day #26 and we're looking for $25,000.00 to build up a full-fledged media team. You may have noticed we didn't have a single telethon last year because of supporters like you who have given us stability! But now, we're looking to go bigger and better. We need your support which will help us get out more and better content. Not only will we be putting out more content, but this will also allow us to promote the entire Bob Enyart Library of content. C.S. Lewis' ministry was magnified 1,000 fold after his death, and we believe Bob's ministry will be as well. To make this dream a reality, head over to our store and make a donation, sponsor a show, purchase a product or sign up for a monthly subscription. (All monthly charges are multiplied by 10, then applied towards our telethon goal). *Don't Throw Out the Thymus: New research indicates that the thymus gland, so blithely removed for decades by doctors educated under the shadow of evolutionary biology, is likely a key defense organ against all kinds of cancer, even in adults! *Water on the Moon: Another researcher working for Walt Brown has found more water than they thought or expected on the moon. *Lactose Tolerance: If you can tolerate milk, new research indicates whole milk, or even raw milk might just be the way to go. *Coming Up: Stay tuned for interviews with Dr. James Tour regarding happenings in the Origin of Life research community, and another A.I. update with Daniel Hedrick.

Names are great. They let people know what to call things. You can read them, write them, put them on a list. If you know someone's name you can send them things, invite them places, say it quietly, in wonder or fear. A name can stick in your mouth like butter or blood. You can make one up, get a new name, do whatever you want. No downsides. Like Eden says; “when the plan fails the adventure begins.” In this episode of THE UNRULE/Y ENTREPRENEUR podcast, I brought on my client Eden Carpenter to discuss the importance of embracing imperfection and the messy parts of creation in entrepreneurship. We were on a coaching call and I asked her if we could start recording this episode for you because we use the best analogies to illustrate how getting messy and embracing the process turns into the most beautiful art and as entrepreneurs what we create is our art form. This week your call to action is throw out the plan, play and go find the adventure! Overview: In this episode we seek to understand Anger. Because anger is so misunderstood, one might feel shame or frustration around feeling angry, when in reality there are some pretty important benefits of anger. Today we will discuss the five components of anger, the appraisal process when angry, anger traps, and five ways to disrupt anger from becoming a problem. Hopefully after listening to this discussion, you will have a better understanding on how to use anger as a tool, rather than having the desire to suppress it. Single-use plastics are used only once before they are recycled – or more likely – simply thrown away. These are things like plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soda and water bottles, and most food packaging. They are primarily made from fossil fuel-based chemicals. Since the 1950s, over 9 billion tons of plastics have been produced, […]

Why would you want to start a movement when you’re busy with your business? Isn’t a movement for activists and non-profits? Not necessarily. A movement is a group of people coming together to act towards a common cause who share similar values. As a business owner, you can ask: How can I serve people who believe the same thing I do? What can I create for this community to achieve our goal? You can use your business to have a bigger purpose and a greater impact, plus having a movement can provide a *container* for your thought leadership message. And of course public speaking can get out your bigger message and attract the people who believe in what you believe. My guest today is Joy Spencer, who was on the podcast earlier this year. She’s back to talk about using a framework called Public Narrative to tell the Story of Self, Story of Us, and Story of Now. In this episode, Joy and I talk about: Why you would want to start a movement as an entrepreneur How a movement can run parallel to your business How public speaking can get out your bigger message and attract the people who believe in what you believe Story of Self, Story of Us, Story of Now: The Public Narrative framework you can use for movement-inspiring speeches Examples of Public Narrative speeches The emotional power of telling your own story You have to be willing to let go of control and learn new leadership skills This episode is part of our podcast series on Storytelling. About My Guest: Joy Spencer is a coach, speaker, and organizational development consultant working with professionals and leaders at all levels within organizations. Whether she’s working with individual contributors or senior leaders, Joy leverages over 17 years of experience she gained while working to champion change in social justice movements, including those related to global access to essential medicines and consumer advocacy for online privacy. This work required a dogged commitment to not merely challenging the status quo, but to reimagining and working towards creating an ideal future. It is this commitment to creating that has shaped Joy’s coaching philosophy and approach today. Using her signature C.R.E.A.T.E. framework, Joy guides her clients through a process to become incomparable in work so they can get paid to be themselves. About Us: The Speaking Your Brand podcast is hosted by Carol Cox. At Speaking Your Brand, we help women entrepreneurs and professionals clarify their brand message and story, create their signature talks, and develop their thought leadership platforms. One of my favorite parts about creating our Optimize Mastery Series is that it forced me to go to the next level of clarity on the most important aspects of our Optimize philosophy. This was true from Day 1 of the program and I found it to be especially powerful with our Eating Fundamental (which is day 200-something!) in which I integrated the wisdom from dozens of books and our Optimal Nutrition 101 and Optimal Metabolism 101 classes into what I called our Optimize Food Rules. Of course, join Optimize Coach and check out that session for the full download. Today we’re going to take a quick look at our Big 3 (+1!) Optimize Food Rules. Here we go… Rule #1: Quit Drinking Your Sugar. This is inspired by a number of great teachers (including Robert Lustig in Fat Chance and John Ratey in Go Wild) but Mark Hyman brought the point home powerfully as his #1 rec in Food Fix. Note: If you’re currently drinking sodas or fruit juices or any liquid with sugar, this is arguably THE fastest and easiest way to take your nutrition to the next level—and, as a by-product, take huge steps forward in Optimizing your metabolism (“Hi, insulin!”) so you can move to your optimal weight. (Note: I just had a flashback of the Science Says data we collected. One of the highlights was how many Optimizers now feel they can easily follow their nutritional philosophy and maintain their Optimal weight.) (Check out the sketch on it below.) So… Are YOU drinking your sugar? If so, STOP!! (Hah. Seriously.) Note: Soda is obviously not a health food but… Parents: Fruit juice is NOT a health food either. Rule #2: Eat Real Food and Throw Out the Factory Food. In the Mastery Series session, we discuss the fact that we want to get rid of three different types of Factory Food including: Factory-made ultraprocessed carbage with ingredients you can’t pronounce, don’t have in your pantry and didn’t evolve to consume; Factory-farmed animals for ethical, health and environmental reasons; and, Factory fat including vegetable oils like soybean, safflower, corn, and canola oils—none of which existed pre-Industrial revolution and all of which disrupt our Omega 3:6 ratios and create inflammation. (Note: Socrates was all about the olive oil—that’s been around for over 5,000 years!) Quick check in: How are you doing there? Rule #3: Eating Sunsets (Aka: Give Yourself the Night Off!) Let your glymph get to work by restricting your eating to a window that gives you AT LEAST 13 hours between your last meal and first meal. We explore some fascinating research on cancer, etc. As you know if you’ve been following along, we have a last-input “digital sunset.” I say we need a last-input “eating sunset”!! In fact, science says: We want to eat AT LEAST two hours before we go to bed and target FOUR hours before we go to bed if we’re playing the Professional Optimizing game. (It’s crazy for me to see the resting heart rate and heart rate variability data on my Oura ring show me the difference when I play in too short of an eating window!) So… When was your last meal last night? When was your first meal Today? How many hours were there in between? Let’s get to 13+ and know that if you have a hard time going that long between meals, it’s probably because we need to work on some metabolic flexibility issues. See Rules #1 and #2 for support there. And, finally, my favorite Rule… Rule +1: Eat Like Your Favorite Philosopher (who lived at least 300 years ago). Perhaps the simplest, wisest advice is to simply eat like your great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents ate before all the factories. I like to tweak that a bit to have fun helping you channel your favorite philosopher or spiritual teacher—whether that’s Jesus or Mohammed or Moses or Buddha or Lao Tzu. For me? It’s Epictetus. Guess what? Our favorite old-school Philosophers didn’t (and couldn’t) drink their sugar because it didn’t exist. And all they could eat was non-factory produced food because factories didn’t exist yet. And they couldn’t eat all day every day because that wonderful invention we call the fridge didn’t exist. There ya go. The Optimize Food Rules in a nutshell. Here’s to changing our lives (and our families’ lives) one bite at a time. TODAY.

The notion that power structures are pyramid-shaped by nature is as deeply ingrained as the fairy tales we're told in our youth and the corporate ladders we set out to climb as professionals. But is it time to explore alternative models?Let's talk about pyramid schemes. No, not the notorious business ruses where paying recruits try to turn profits by exacting fees from rubes they bring on. We're talking instead about all the hierarchies – from sports teams to companies, orchestras, governments, faith communities, and even grassroots groups like neighborhood watch committees - that just seem naturally to take on that familiar pyramidal aspect: a commander at the top, flanked by a handful of lieutenants, and supported by a greater number of soldiers below. There's an irresistible logic to this structure, of course. Yet it's useful to consider alternative structures, especially now, where the promise of benevolent leadership in our federal government has proven tenuous while the threat of authoritarian overreach grows daily. In the wake of COVID-19, what we're discovering is that when people at the lower echelons of corporate entities suffer, the people at the top suffer too. If people at the bottom can't go to work due to quarantine, isolation, or sickness, the value that they create no longer accrues for those at the top.Rethinking the Balance of Authority and ValueSo what alternative structures are there? Dr. Teri talks about peer networks of "pods," or teams organized to provide a focused service or produce a specific component. The gig economy continues to evolve, certain implementations of which empower workers to manage their own time and resources, and even set their own rates. You Don't Need to Throw Out the System to Reform ItGranted, some processes likely lend themselves to pyramidal organizations. Others, which may benefit from a different organizational approach, might need to change gradually. Our role as self-actualized leaders is to constantly reflect on what we can do to improve these structures, these processes, and the products and services they deliver. What can we do to ensure that people across the organization are treated fairly, with dignity, and in a way that aligns with the true value they provide? Phil and Stephen discuss massive disruptions taking place in education. What students know that experts don't: School is all about signaling, not skill-building Is it possible that students are on to something? There is a massive gap between school and work, between learning and earning. A new study shows that students learn way more effectively from print textbooks than screens Across the studies, the texts differed in length, and we collected varying data (e.g., reading time). Nonetheless, some key findings emerged that shed new light on the differences between reading printed and digital content.
