What's Next in UX is back! User Experience is essential for brand success, but it can be hard to measure due to its subjective nature. So how does a brand or a business know if they are providing an excellent experience and how can they compare to competitors? This is where Ipsos' UX Score comes in. The Ipsos UX Score is a proprietary tool to help clients objectively assess their user experience. The UX Score correlates with Net Promoter Score (NPS) – a widely used customer loyalty metric – and can accurately predict a brand's equity. It can also be used as a benchmark for offline and online experience for physical and digital products. Jacqueline Hull, Senior Vice President, UX USA, is joined by Giulia Stefani, UX Director for Switzerland, to interview Yana Beranek, Global Head of UX, and Janina Schoenebeck, Senior Research Executive, IUU Germany. Together they discuss the Ipsos UX Score and its capabilities.

UX design is still a misunderstood field in games. Therefore, it is hard to hire great UX designers who understand games or game designers who deeply understand UX. How do we solve this human and skills puzzle? In this episode, Olga Marushchak, UX Director at King, will deconstruct what makes a great UX designer. Olga will share practical tools on how to hire and identify great UX designers, when you don't have internally the knowledge yourself. She will also prove that it is possible to hire UX designers without a prior experience in games if they demonstrate certain key skills. Last, how do you train your UX designers in games, once you found the One? Olga has been working in Game Dev for almost 14 years and has worked in various gaming companies: AAA, small indie startups, and medium-sized organizations such as Playgendary and Wargaming.

Andy Curry is UX Director at Lion+Mason. In this episode of Understanding Users, Andy reminds us of the power of storytelling as one of UX's most underrated skills and how the basics of observing users to help inform design decisions in essence dates back thousands of years. We discuss the impact of global lockdowns on carrying out ethnographic research, and of the epiphany moments of real insight he and his team gained previously from shadowing users during field visits: even going as far, in one case, as hoovering the carpet in an elderly user's home! He also plays my 3 card challenge to share his favourite UX tool, favourite technique and a trend he sees in the future. Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy the episode. What is UX, user experience and what kind of user experiences does it include? Would unboxing also be part of UX? What aspects of UX design can enable seamless experiences across devices? Does personalization enhance user experience? How do Spotify, Thread do it well ? What are the key future trends to watch out for in UX? Damian answers the above questions and many more as he talks about User Experience Design and helping businesses focus on users first and how they can design better interactions using new technology. Damian is an expert in UX research, product design, & psychology. Damian Rees is the UX Director for Europe at Ipsos (a global research company ) responsible for educating and empowering teams to deliver top quality UX research and design work to clients globally. Please connect with Jasravee on Linkedin at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasravee/ Email Jasravee at jasravee@theadiva.com Damian believes that UX is about making an experience easy, useful, and in some circumstances enjoyable for user. The thing that sets UX apart is the structured user-centred design process at the heart. Where users are the focus right from the start and any assumptions are validated and design ideas are tested iteratively. So when something launches, we already know users want it, need it, and can use it.A good user experience is about making it simple, fast, accessible, easy to understand, credible. He talks about his personal experience where he took his 7 year old to McDonalds and he ordered a happy meal for himself and his brother with no help from me. He just watched and felt it was such a great example of UX. If a 7 year old can walk up to something, interact, and complete a purchase then the experience has been designed well. The core differences between Customer Experience (CX) and UX is that CX is about the overall customer relationship – across multiple touch points. UX tends to be more about focusing on individual touch points at a time and designing the interactions between the customer and the business. User experience is an under-appreciated but crucial aspect of modern technology and software — particularly in the field of video games, which have to introduce complex ideas without intimidating players. In this week’s podcast, Chris is joined by UX Director, Celia Hodent, who put her PhD in psychology, specialized in cognitive development, to good use in helping create Fortnite. Celia explains how user experience helped make military aircraft safer and how it’s been a fundamental part of gaming since the days of Super Mario Bros. Using examples from casual titles such as Candy Crush to the notoriously tricky Dark Souls, Celia explains how games teach skills and use interaction to build worlds and reward behavior. She also gives excellent reasons why kids shouldn’t play games outside of their age rating, and why culture is more important than gender when it comes to game design. Whether you’re a gamer or not, you’ll undoubtedly come away from this podcast with a new perspective on the design of just about everything.

In this episode, Travis Neilson interviews Jens Riegelsberger, a UX Director at Google, about the company’s evolving design identity. Riegelsberger discusses his role in launching Google’s Product Excellence program—an initiative that sets the bar for quality and usability across all Google products—and what it means to build teams that favor multiple perspectives and diverse skillsets. A few highlights: On being a good leader“Look at your job as chiefly to enable other people's insights and eureka moments. That doesn't mean abdicating responsibility. It takes actually quite a bit of work to do this well.” On embracing healthy friction“Frankly, we can't have a static, preordained culture because we work in a field where so much change is happening all the time. So knowing that we all have to negotiate culture and that it's a fluid thing prepares us well for the changes that are coming.” On the value of “dabbling”“I have a PhD in computer science, but I also taught at art school. So there's this mix of different identities that I’ve had to cobble together. I’ve never deeply believed, ‘Okay, this worldview is the only true worldview; my science or my community knows how it's done,’ because I've always jumped around.” Handy info and links for this episode: Riegelsberger co-authored this whitepaper on a 2013 project aimed at increasing empathy for users. Over the last five years, the project has helped more than 1,500 Google engineers, designers, and product managers immerse themselves in observational research. Product Excellence is a Google initiative, started in 2014, that’s working to identify and solve systemic barriers to excellence—by focusing on the user. Global UX research is a rapidly growing field. Here are 10 strategies used by Google’s international research team to build empathy and impact for the next billion users. Jens Riegelsberger is a UX director at Google, where he leads the design and user research operations and strategy teams behind products like Search and Maps. He was previously at UX consultancy LBi and worked with Amazon, Microsoft Research, and Apple, in addition to teaching at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
When you're designing products for people, having empathy for those specific people (aka users) is critical. Yep, you know that, but how can you increase empathy for the users from the entire team, and stakeholders too? In this episode, Karen Reilly, UX Director at Iterate in Dublin, Ireland, shares insights and techniques inspired by her work in improv for developing more empathy, not only for users but within our teams as well. Karen is an expert both at creating user-centered products, and at improv, not to mention being an advocate for cows who do yoga. You’ll get great ideas for all of those things after listening in on this fun and insightful episode of UX Cake. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
