Moving Forward with a Body of ArtworkWelcome back. If you've listened to episode 98, you know I took a year off the podcast to attain my MFA. I'm happy to share that I completed a one-year accelerated MFA program in Media Design through Full Sail University.Completing the heavy grad school workload while keeping my job required hours after work every day and on weekends in addition to a 40-hour work week allowed for very little sleep, even less housekeeping (thank you to my husband for hanging in there), and no time for painting or podcasting. Thank you to you, my loyal listeners, who hung in there. The show is back, and I'm excited to continue my conversations with you, my fellow artists. Now, if you're a longtime listener, then you know that for me, this show is all about you, my sister, and what you need as an artist. But since I'm jumping back in after a long break, I am checking in and letting you know what's coming up.This episode will give you an idea of some epiphanies I've gained during the year that can help other artists. The next podcast will resume my interviews with artists and professionals whose businesses provide resources that support artists. In looking back on how much I was able to cram into the past year to achieve a big career goal, the key takeaways from my grad school experience that can help artists can be put into four steps:Step 1: Have a clear picture of where you want to go.Step 2: Know your risk tolerance.Step 3: Pick a direction through ideation and researchStep 4: Make consistent progress your goal.Click here to read the complete shownotes for this episode.
Recent reports concerning the future of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) have stated, with one September post from NiemanLab saying that both membership and revenues are so low that the organization is set to "end the year $391,000 in the red," according to an audit prepared by an external accountant and dated August 2023. The same article by Sarah Scire featured the sub-head, "If we don't change our thinking, the next incoming president will be the last president.” That new president was sworn in at the October 1, 2023, annual convention in Las Vegas. She is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, journalism professor and associate dean for the Center for Media Design at the Santa Monica College, Ashanti Blaize-Hopkins. Hopkins also made history on that date as the first black woman ever to be elected to that post. Hopkins feels confident that the financial issues reported are not insurmountable, stating during this interview with E&P Publisher Mike Blinder, "I can firmly and unequivocally say that I will not be the last president of the SPJ. All of the journalism organizations across the country are facing financial situations. We have the benefit of having a foundation that was created to be in support of the society. That foundation has $12 million in the bank." She continued, "We are on our way to 'righting the ship,' and I can firmly say that will happen before the end of my term." Diversity within the SPJ and the journalism industry is another goal of Hopkin's. As quoted in the press release announcing her presidency, "I hesitated to join SPJ for several years because I just didn't see anyone who looked like me in leadership positions. It made me feel like I didn't belong in the organization. But I decided to be the change that I wanted to see in SPJ," she said. "Representation matters, and I hope to show through my leadership and diverse board of directors that there is a place for everyone at SPJ." In this episode of "E&P Reports," we go one-on-one with newly sworn-in Society of Professional Journalists President Ashanti Blaize-Hopkins to discuss how she plans to keep the organization prospering during a time of lagging membership and conference attendance, as well as her plans for SPJ's success. We also hear her views on the news media ecosystem as a whole and how we can define what is journalism in a world of disinformation and "fake news."

Send in your question via text to 1-800-485-3139. Question #1 (01:28): How do you navigate creating content in a small church where most of the ppl are camera shy? I've tried asking ppl for testimony, tried asking ppl how they felt about service, we even tried a segment where we highlight entrepreneurs in our congregation as a way to involve community. Overall, engagement is low both on and offline. How do I as the social media manager help turn it around? Question #2 (09:14): I've been trying to find some data and stats that prove converting our Catholic homilies into short form video would be worth the time it would take to do it. Do you happen to have any data or stats showing performance by churches who are doing this? More specifically, it would be great if it could be data from Catholic Churches. I hear everyone pitching to do it, but cannot find any data to show results. Not to sound all corporate, but what is the ROI? Question #3 (19:43): Here's a boring but helpful idea for a podcast question. Business card tips? We do a feeding the needy program and distribute business cards for people to know who we are and how to make contact. Tips? Question #4 (25:14): What are your hottest food takes?

Lady Waks on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 7/12/22 About Lady Waks - I am Alexandra, painter, graphic designer, graffiti artist and musician. In a word, an artist. Born in 1982 in Leningrad. I have been inseparable from drawing since early childhood: one day my parents sent me to an art school, which determined my whole future. Throughout my life, my work has changed, opened up from new sides, acquired unexpected forms, but fine art has definitely become my destiny. In the early 1990s, I moved to Germany, where I graduated from the private art school Freie Waldorfschule. There she met her first great creative "love" - street art. I became interested in them in Hannover, where I had the good fortune to work side by side with famous graffiti artists. For the next few years, I decorated the streets of different cities with my drawings, working under the pseudonym WAKS. I did not leave street art, and when I returned to my native St. Petersburg, I only changed my pseudonym to a mirror one - SKAW. By that time I had developed my own recognizable style, my graffiti began to appear more and more often on the pages of Western magazines and books devoted to contemporary art, such as Graffiti World by Nicholas Ganz. But I felt that within the framework of street art I was getting crowded, I needed to move on, expand my creative horizons. Therefore, I entered the University of Culture and Arts at the Faculty of Media Design. In the early 2000s, the next chapter of my creative life began - I became interested in music. She moved to Berlin again, went headlong into a new hobby: she wrote tracks under the third pseudonym LADY WAKS in her life. The next 10 years were basically one big tour with performances up to six times a week. But the love of painting and drawing has not gone away: I just redirected it into graphic design, creating numerous music covers, logos and posters. Later, my experience in this field allowed me to create my own creative design agency. In 2018 I returned to painting. Now I live and work in St. Petersburg. My style combines all my creative experience: it is a synthesis of academic skills acquired at the university, techniques from street art and graphic design. In general, it can be called abstract painting, which conveys my vision of the world, my feelings and emotions. In this episode we're joined by Matthew Scott Waldman. Matthew is best known as the founder of NOOKA – the lifestyle design brand that bought the revolution of interface design to physical products and the founder of a “evolution by design” research lab at Keio University's Graduate School of Media Design. This conversation with Matthew left me, as how all good innovation conversation should, both with more questions than answers and with a motivation to be part of creating an innovation ecosystem in Japa n, to rival that of any other global hub. We explored the cyclic nature of design and linguistics; that is, how our language affects design that design affects our languages. Then we explored innovation in Japan from policy lens; we talked about LGBT rights, maternity leave and how to affect real change in Japan and some how we also touched on psychedelics. I don't know how it happened but it did and I loved it. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did and don’t forget to share your feedback with me on your favorite social platform. Let's begin!02:55 | Techno-progessivism and its relationship to Design.06:15 | Storytelling via Design.08:50 | Design as a language.16:45 | Matthew's Research Lab & Circular Design at Keio University.24:18 | Innovation in Japan.28:15 | Cultural Barries to Innovation; including positive policy for LGBT rights, parental leave and foreign talent.51:45 | Finding you voice in innovation.56:00 | Storytelling being equally important to tech innovation.1:00:15 | What innovation to expect next. I was fortunate to share a cup of tea high above the fashion hub district of Shibuya with an insightful individual. Matthew ( @thinglove ) is the founder of NOOKA but recently is one of the forefront professors at Keio University Graduate School of Media Design. This chat was lengthy compared to my average episode yet the unhindered conversation was very vital in understanding (if only the surface) the attractive field in design and what Matthew stresses the importance of Universal Language and Branding. At times I may have felt like one of his students mentally taking bullet points but his story can otherwise be utilizable to innovators of all fields. Personally, this has been one of the most edifying episodes I've produced so far. Honestly, this is for you faithful listeners wanting to study or pursue the field of product design and branding. matthewwaldman.com Keio University Graduate School of Design-- https://www.kmd.keio.ac.jp --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/madeinjapanpodcast/message

Sewing, knitting, quilting, the crafts related to fabric making, are usually not what we think about when we consider our digital communications devices. Yet, many of the activities that we find ourselves doing with our devices touching the screen, scrolling, swiping, etc. and some of the language that we use to describe our actions, draw from textile culture. In his book The Fabric of Interface: Mobile Media, Design, and Gender (MIT Press, 2017), Stephen Montiero, at Concordia University, explores the connection between the fabric arts and computing. In it he investigates the relationship between gender and the construction of media technologies. A particular focus of his is an examination of how, as in former years sewing was dismissed as women’s work, social aspects of digital technologies are gendered and dismissed as inconsequential. Montiero also details the eraser of the contributions of many women to the evolution of the technology that is now ubiquitous. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Frohes neues Jahr!
