Having been distraught when she first arrived, she has managed to work within the confinement of the hotel on the family emergency. However, just being in the same time zone has made a great deal of difference. Mind you, this is recorded just a few days into the quarantine, so catch up with us on our next podcast, and I am sure Kelly will be able to give you an idea of how things went after the first four days. Here's a super retail success story. 20 months ago Kelly Wright launched The Refillery – now Edinburgh's largest plastic-free and ethical shop. She left a well-paid corporate job to launch the business. Even before Covid-19 some folk might have had doubts about launching a bricks-and-mortar retail business when many high streets are struggling. It was certainly a 'huge financial risk' for Kelly, she says: 'at times I couldn't breathe...'But The Refillery has gone from strength to strength, smashing through Kelly's first-year targets, becoming a local community hub as well as a thriving business, winning an award from an international foundation, and adapting through lockdown. Why did Kelly leave a job she loved and was good at to launch The Refillery? How did she fund its startup costs? How did she adapt during lockdown? What have been the biggest challenges – and what is she most proud of? And what's next for the business? Kelly covers it all in this interview. Also in this episode: social enterprise in Africa offers 'job creation on steroids' according to new British Council report.Timings:0-3 introduction and almost-a-rant from me3:37 Kelly Wright interview3:50 What The Refillery in Edinburgh sells5:06 Kelly's previous career and why she launched the business after working on initiatives to reduce packaging and wanting to make a positive – and radical – change8:14 Was it frightening to make this leap?9:00 The key moment which helped Kelly when she nearly gave up her dream and continued in her job – but instead, pushed through to make The Refillery happen11:05 How The Refillery became a lifeline in recent months12:00 What Kelly did to adapt and protect customers' and colleagues' health as a result of Covid-19 – and how she launched a click-and-collect service16:07 How Kelly financed the business using her own savings and support from DSL Business Finance17:41 The challenge of finding the right premises (and another rant from me!)20:00 How The Refillery has totally surpassed Kelly's expectations21:36 In July The Refillery won the Environmental Sustainability category in the Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards – how is Kelly using the cash prize?22:22 Launching 'The Refillery Community' nationwide and how this will scale-up plastic-free retailing25:00 These are UK-wide plans, including for Sheffield and other cities28:53 Some great advice Kelly had early on30:20 Wrapping up Kelly's interview and contact details31:07 Have your say! On today’s episode, I am just so excited to introduce you all to one truly amazing woman who will both educate and inspire you. Keisha Shields is an executive and leadership adviser who shows women how to finally let go of other people's expectations of what their life should be and how to show up authentically in every way, with zero apologies. She specializes in how stigmas, stereotypes, grief and trauma can keep high-achieving women from using their voice to build the legacy, success and wealth they want, on their terms. One reason that Keisha is such a huge success in her business is that, as the wife of someone who has been sentenced to life in prison, she knows all about stigmas and stereotypes, and, more importantly, exactly how to move beyond them to show up authentically. Keisha begins our conversation by sharing her backstory, the stigmas and stereotypes she felt, the physical and emotional impact of her fear of having her story discovered, and her reasons for deciding to stay with her husband. She describes the two different worlds in which she found herself, her approach to friendships both then and now, and the transition she made to showing up as her true self. Together, we discuss the stories we make up about how others see us, and Keisha talks about her current business, the traits she displayed as a child that are still with her today, how she’s actually doing these days, and what is next for her. At the conclusion, I share with you my greatest takeaway from this incredibly personal and inspiring conversation, and I encourage you to share yours with me as well. Let’s face it, we all have some aspect about ourselves which we’re hiding for fear of the judgment others may pass upon us. Whatever that aspect is, there’s a very good chance that it is not of the same magnitude as Keisha’s, which makes her story of overcoming stigmas and stereotypes both powerful and inspiring on a whole other level, and one that we all need to hear today. As always, and especially as we head into September and all that entails, if you feel that you need additional support or just want to chat, please feel free to send me an email at support@kellytravis.net or DM me at https://www.instagram.com/kellythealth/ or join my free FB group The Goal-Getter’s Club at https://www.facebook.com/groups/goalgettersclubkellythealth/ The Finer Details of This Episode: - Keisha’s backstory - The stigma and stereotype of being a partner of someone who’s in the penal system - The physical and emotional impact of her fear of people finding out about her husband’s situation - Her decision to stay with someone with a life sentence without the possibility of parole - Keisha’s two separate worlds - Her approach to friendships - Her transition to showing up in her true, authentic self - Making up stories about how people see us - Keisha’s business - Her childhood traits that are still with her today - How she’s doing right now and what’s next for her - What Kelly learned from this conversation Quotes: “There was this huge stigma about, you know, having somebody who’s in prison, and what that means.” “I started to really get curious about how stigmas and stereotypes really played a role, and who showed up at the forefront and who did not.” “Aside from being Black, I break every other stereotype that they have had about what that looked like, and it makes me smile because, like it just challenges…the assumptions that people make.” “The fact that he was in prison wasn’t actually the problem…it was the fact that my husband had a life sentence…as a teenager.” “I was having to hide all of who I truly was.” “You realize that you shine the best when you are able to truly be, you know, who you are.” “We bury ourselves under stigmas because of the potential repercussions that can happen.” “For…12 years, I created this monster in my of what people were going to say…I self-sabotaged.” “People who have known me all my life would be surprised to hear this interview.” “I live my life now by my own expectations, and that feels really good for me.” “You have to feel very secure, hot, fabulous and when you do that, like, everything will change and you’ll be rock-solid and nothing anybody tries to do to take away from that will actually, you know, unground you.” “When we see people who certainly have a situation that there is a stigma around, when we see them overcome that and own it, it’s so powerful and inspiring.” Show Links: Have you joined my free Facebook community - The Goal-Getter’s Club? In relationships, there are always differences. And of course, there are things that you agree on but apart from that, there are matters that you need to make a decision on as a couple. Life isn't always a bed of roses, there are highs and lows, and it is during those low moments that your resolve to make things work is tested. It is never easy, but if you are coming from a belief of bringing out the best in each other, complementing each other, and truly supporting and caring for each other, then no amount of challenge can stop you from overcoming them. Kelly Babb is a former elite-level soccer player. She is also a kinesiology graduate but after school, she went the opposite direction. She now organizes sporting events for Sport Manitoba. And essentially she oversees all the logistics of the behind the scenes action for provincial athletes or provincial teams when they go to compete at events. She is also Gavin's fiance. In this episode, Kelly talks about the dynamics of their relationship as a couple. With different interests and passions in life, Gavin leaning more toward entrepreneurship while she gets busy with a nine to five job, they kind of set up boundaries and expectations of each other when it comes to their respective work and their personal time together. The financial matter is one issue you have to deal with as a couple, be it big or small, you need to decide on it, anyway. Check out how they dealt with one of the biggest financial decisions they ever made and how it brought out the best in each of them and their relationship. “The way that you act when you're high and the way that you act when you're low impacts who you're living with or who your partner is. As much as you are in your highs and lows, I am also where the highs and lows are.” - Kelly Babb What you will learn from this episode: 03:31 - How's life living with an entrepreneur partner? 05:30 - On setting boundaries and on giving each other support 07:17 - Dealing with the lows and blows in life together 11:09 - The importance of reframing yourself and your focus 13:02 - How has Gavin's self-development journey affected Kelly personally 16:38 - How to deal with finances and making decisions as a couple on big financial matters 18:52 - What made Kelly say yes to one big financial decision 22:01 - What Kelly looks for in a coach 23:29 - What made her work with Girls Gone Strong 25:24 - The message Girls Gone Strong sends out that she truly loves 27:40 - How are things going with training and exercise moving online Connect With Kelly Babb: Twitter Connect With Gavin McHale: Gavinmchale.clickfunnels.com LinkedIn Instagram

Welcome to the Design Thinking 101 podcast! I'm Dawan Stanford, your host. Today's episode is part two of a two-part series on Design for America. Design for America is a nationwide network that supports design innovation for social impact. DFA was founded at Northwestern University, and is helping to shape the next generation of social innovators and student-led design-led studios on over 40 college campuses. Today, we'll speak to two guests about what Design for America is, why DFA exists, how DFA works, and what the future may look like at Design for America. We start our episode talking to Kelly Wisneski about her DFA experience, which began at Washington University in St. Louis during her undergraduate education. She knew she wanted to talk to people who were involved in Design For America in the Washington University chapter. She was working on a project related to food insecurity in St. Louis when she realized DFA would be her entry point into St. Louis. Kelly joined DFA during her first semester at university, and found herself on the leadership board in her second semester. She enjoyed being part of the leadership board and having a hand in growing DFA from a small studio into a more extensive workshop. Kelly assisted others in getting their projects off the ground in her early stages of leadership. In 2019, Kelly has contributed to the building of nine new DFA studios. "DFA is not just design thinking projects, they are projects that are here to make an impact on the people that it matters to the most." Our second conversation is with Liz Gerber. We first chatted with Liz about how DFA was launched. She worked in the research sector of the toy industry with kids, asking them how they would build their own toys. As a new professor at her university, Liz was not satisfied with just research and publishing. She wanted to launch a new idea that she had brewing. Liz yearned to create a unique educational and impact structure in which students were working directly with community members. She broke down the boundary between the classroom and campus and the “real world,” giving students the ability to tackle and solve real-world community problems. Bios Kelly Wisneski is a Program Coordinator at Design for America, supporting DFA studios across the country and working to improve DFA's data systems. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, where she studied Architecture and Computer Science and led her local DFA chapter for 4 years. Liz Gerber is the Faculty Director and Co-Founder at Design for America. The question that drives her is, "What can I do for others," and she continues to create communities that innovate collectively to tackle messy and meaningful problems. She is a design professor with a passion for understanding social interactions and practical applications for the technology. In This Episode [01:34] Kelly talks about her early DFA experiences. [04:25] Advice Kelly gives for studios that are getting off the ground. [07:27] What Kelly has learned and what her students have learned when they are a part of the project experience. [10:57] Kelly highlights some DFA project components she enjoyed learning. [11:57] How Kelly is working with mentors and guiding them through the process. [15:08] Kelly’s advice if you want to start a DFA studio. [16:37] Liz tells the DFA launch backstory. [20:30] The students’ first challenge: helping children with diabetes. [22:15] Ten years later: Liz reflects on the work of DFA. [23:40] Anniversary party for DFA and the DFA chapter’s ripple effects. [29:13] Open questions about the future for DFA. A few weeks ago I posted a poll on Instagram asking how many people out there were also feeling pulled in too many directions. More than 50 responses came in, 100% agreeing they felt overwhelmed and overscheduled. It might be the time of year, it might be the season of business, but I think we can all agree we need to find a way to create some blank space on the calendar. To handle this situation, I asked my friend Kelly Higdon of Calibrate Your Year to join me on Episode 126 of Proof to Product. For some background, Kelly is a former psychotherapist turned business coach who helps entrepreneurs grow their business without the soul suck. She believes that a successful business is one that contributes to a happier life and when she isn't working, she's traveling with her family, dabbling in art and listening to live music. On today’s episode, Kelly and I talk about burnout. We talk about knowing you're enough within your business, and Kelly share how she manages to block off over 200 days a year for rest and family time. Yep… you read that right… 200!!! ON TODAY’S EPISODE: Misconceptions people have about building downtime into their life & business The unintended side-effects that can come from hustling too hard Looking back on make it or break it moments Why it’s important to always, continuously check-in with yourself Steps you can take to safeguard your wellbeing and balance business How to embrace minimalism Questions to ask yourself in critical moments Tips for prioritizing relationships Why you should schedule life before business What Kelly’s working on for 2020 KEY TAKE-AWAYS: “I exhibited at a trade show five days after I miscarried because I felt like I had to be there, which is so ridiculous. In hindsight, I should have taken time for myself to rest and heal and take care of my body and my family.” - Katie Hunt “Life presents things. Your health will present things, your relationships will present things. And then you have to decide, based on your values, based on who you are, what needs to shift to sustain a good life.” - Kelly Higdon “I was teaching and speaking at conferences all over the place, running through airports with my breast pump. It was insane and I got to the end of the year and realized this is not sustainable. I can't keep doing this.” - Katie Hunt “There are lots of different ways to serve, lots of different products to create. So it’s really about getting down to the essence of what you want to do and what you want to be known for.” - Kelly Higdon “Planning ahead, I know what days I have to fit my business into. From there I can figure out when I'm going to host events, what the launch cycle looks like for that. And it has to fit into those spaces.” - Kelly Higdon “I will tell you straight up, I'm a recovering workaholic. It is an addiction. I have to just always be aware of that.” - Kelly Higdon “Define whatever it is that you want to have a good life. And deconstruct it to find that number your family needs to live a good life.” - Katie Hunt “I'd rather have simple businesses that provide a good living than wreck myself.” - Kelly Higdon “People, when they don't address who they are as a person, they'll repeat this in all their relationships, particularly in their business.” - Kelly Higdon LINKS Website: http://calibrateyouryear.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KellyHigdonLMFT/ Instagram: http://instagram.com/kellyhigdoncoaching SUBSCRIBE To subscribe on iOS, go to the iTunes page and subscribe to Proof to Product. Show Notes: When it comes to your health, the one thing you might sacrifice the most is sleep. If this is true for you, it’s time to get serious about making this a priority. Good, consistent sleep helps you to keep your immune system strong, lose weight, level out your mood, stay productive and perform your best in mind and body. Kelly learned this the hard way when after years of compromising her own sleep, she found herself facing health issues and losing motivation to get after her goals. Today, Kelly no longer negotiates with her sleep so she can show up her best in her business and for the people in her life and she encourages everyone she works with to change their own relationship with sleep. For this episode, we’re taking a look at all the factors that affect the quantity and quality of your sleep, so you can better understand what’s keeping you from the rest you deserve. Kelly also supplies you with a wide array of tips and tricks you can use to improve your sleep game. The Finer Details of This Episode: - Taking a look at how lack of sleep negatively affects us and explaining why we need to make time for sleep. - The unfortunate way our culture turns sleep deprivation into a badge of honor. - How Kelly’s own experiences with sleep deprivation led her to completely rethink her approach to cell phone usage and her bedtime. - The surprising percentage of people who aren’t getting decent sleep. - Why we should prioritize quality over quantity when it comes to the sleep we can get. - How you can learn to get back to your circadian rhythms. - What sleep studies can tell us about the hormones that affect sleep and how decent sleep plays a pivotal role in fat loss. - How to give your body a jump start as soon as you wake up. - When you shouldn’t feel guilty about giving yourself an extra hour of sleep. - What Kelly has been doing to put her sleep schedule back on track. - How magnesium deficiency plays a role in the quality of sleep we get. - How the interplay between temperature, light and even your cell phone can have a negative impact on your sleep cycle. Quotes: “We need to get smarter about our schedules and actually use the time we have.” “We’ve been programmed to equate success with burning the candle at both ends, and the truth is this behavior elicits the opposite results.” “Rather than making sleep something that I fit into my schedule, it has become a non-negotiable.” “Overbooking and overextending ourselves is not how we get to the top.” “Your sleep health is in your brain AND in your belly.” “Staying cool is incredibly important to getting quality sleep.” “Make space in your brain so there’s nothing there and you can go to sleep.” Show Links: Kelly’s homepage - http://www.kellytravis.net Podcast homepage - http://www.kellytravis.net/podcast

Do you struggle with taking consistent, sometimes messy, action? Perhaps you wait around to feel motivated or you constantly find yourself making excuses? Last week, Kelly challenged you to consider playing bigger in all areas of your life. Now comes the next major stage: laying out the steps you’ll need to take and personal changes you’ll need to make in order to make those goals part of your reality. It’s easy to contemplate these steps, but actually acting on them is a wholly different ballgame—less theoretical, potentially very messy. What you need are strategies to help you feel confident taking action in the face of fear, so that you show up and make daily progress. In this episode, Kelly shares with you what’s holding you back from taking action and how you can create more confidence. She’s also giving you 3 concrete tools to put into practice so you can start showing up and getting comfortable with taking imperfect action. The first thing to understand: even with the best planning, your journey will not be perfect. Sign up for Kelly’s free masterclass where Kelly will give you the three must-have secrets to achieving healthy high performance. She’ll share how to develop and grow as a healthy high performer without following a rigid plan, experiencing constant overwhelm, and getting confused about where to start. When it comes to trade shows, there are SO many questions. How much is this going to cost? How does this all work? How do I make sure it’ll be a success? Am I ready? In my interview with Danielle Licata and Kelly Helfman, we talk about these exact questions and more. Danielle and Kelly are brand directors for the Magic Trade Show in Vegas, the Coterie Trade Show in New York, and so many other specialty shows for specific categories. Magic and Coterie are some of the largest fashion trade show events in North America, and these ladies know their STUFF! They’re so knowledgeable and so generous with sharing it here on the podcast--you’re going to love it. We go through what these trade shows are doing to support new and emerging designers (like you!), how to decide if you’re ready, the details of the exact numbers of how much things are going to cost, and they’ve really set you up for success. We talk about how to prepare before, during, and after your trade show experience. I’m so excited about this episode--I know you’re going to love it! In the interview (which you'll love) we will cover: DTC vs retail What brands are doing to break in, get started, and stand out at trade shows (and how to know you’re ready) Ways to connect with buyers to make sure you show up at the show in the right orders Step-by-step advice to figure out if this is the right path for you What kinds of brands Kelly and Danielle see coming to their trade shows, and what they’ve seen brands do to have a successful launch the first time around The timeline to be expected The foundation brands start with when jumping into a trade show How seriously buyers take your Instagram following (!), and how clear you need to be on your brand story How much of a foundation to build before getting results at a wholesale trade show How much money to set aside to do trade shows! What Danielle and Kelly think the future of trade shows will look like--they’re changing! What collateral you need to go in prepared as a brand The key to your success at a trade show: knowing who you are as a brand, and knowing where you should be positioned How brands kickoff the successful trade show experience Opportunities for startup and emerging designers What Kelly and Danielle wish people would ask them about working in the fashion industry And so much more! DANIELLE LICATA From being a Sales and Operations Manager at Stella McCartney and Vice President at Belstaff, Danielle Licata has earned her role as the President of East Coast Womens, Informa, overseeing Coterie, Fame, Moda, and AccessoriesTheShow. With over 10 years of experience in the luxury fashion category, Danielle is both a macro-thinker and micro-executer, allowing her lead and successfully builds her team. Danielle has had many hats; from opening flagship stores to increasing multi-million dollar revenues to curating trade shows from the ground up. Since her start at UBM Fashion (now Informa) Danielle has pioneered the launch of Beauty at Coterie and will be unveiling the company’s first stand-alone retail pop-up in Miami this July 2018. KELLY HELFMAN Kelly is the President of West Coast Womens, Informa, overseeing WWDMAGIC, Project Womens, and Pooltradeshow. Kelly leads the MAGIC Women’s events while balancing motherhood and advocating for work/life balance. With 15+ years of experience in fashion sales, marketing, and design, her career highlights include starting her own celeb-favorite, vintage-inspired clothing brand, launching Children's Club Las Vegas, and FWD New York (now merged with FAME). LET’S TALK TRADE SHOWS Kelly and Danielle are here to help you maximize your trade show experience and decide when and if it’s right for you. Through Magic and Coterie trade show, they provide a platform for brands to sell directly to buyers, holding your hand (if you need it!) to do what’s best for your business. They have about seven shows a year, so if you’re interested, there’s always time to get prepared for the next one--you don’t have to wait long! Danielle and Kelly and their team help you decide if you’re 100% ready for a trade show, and in this episode, they talk about how to know if you’re there or not. You could be brand new to trade shows, but if you have a on-trend product at just the right moment in time, they’ll help you make it happen. If the market is saturated with your product, and they don’t feel like you’re ready, they’ll be honest with you! WHAT’S THE DAMAGE? Depending on which trade show you’re interested in, you could be looking at some different price points. Coterie is focused on Contemporary and Premium brands, and Magic is more for the mass market price points. Magic has a $5500-6500 all-inclusive price--that’s tables, chairs, etc. But it only fits 100 samples, so you have to plot out how many booths you might need. They offer booth sharing for a small extra brand fee that’s much more affordable than reserving a whole extra booth. Coterie has an $8300 price point, but there’s a high ratio of buyers to brands. Then you have to think about travel, branding, and shipping...multiplied by three times (the minimum number of trade shows Danielle and Kelly recommend committing to in order to see a favorable outcome). Then when you’re setting up your booth, make it special! Are there mimosas? Is there a bouquet bar? Perhaps a wall of flowers? Music? Does it smell good? In this industry, you need to create your brand and create an instagrammable moment that people won’t forget. Don’t sit on your cell phone--engage with people! Get to know your neighbors! You can’t just put a rack up and hope something happens. A buyer is still a buyer, whether they’re wholesale or retail--Kelly and Danielle urge brand to create an experience no matter where they are. USE YOUR RESOURCES So you’re at the trade show. You’ve prepared for months, done the research, branded your booth, and created something special. There’s still (free!) opportunities to maximize your trade show experience! You can always ask questions of your representative or trade show consultant. Ask what complimentary opportunities you have at the show where you can market. Perhaps there’s swag bag participation, or a new brand highlight on social. There might be mannequins featured and they could be yours! Don’t just sign up for the booth and show up--always ask for more. Kelly and Danielle truly are experts and they want to help. Such a dream come true! Trade shows can feel like a huge ordeal and time commitment--because they are. But they really set you up for success with their support and resources. They encourage you to reach out on social--take them up on that! They’re a valuable resource and a wealth of information. This episode is a great listen whether you’re preparing for your first or umpteenth trade show, and whether you’re going to Coterie, Magic, or another trade show. They’ll set you up for success by telling you how to prepare before, during, and after your trade show experience, and get your brand into the buyer’s hands that want it! My guest, health nutritionist and author, Kelly LeVeque and I have been circling each other for quite a while, which makes me so ecstatic that we were finally able to connect. With an early interest in health (it was her favorite class in high school), she went to college and after worked eight years in the cancer and genetics field. During this time, however, Kelly still felt pulled to help others with their nutrition and did so as she was able. It wasn’t until a friend finally told her “enough already,” that she went back to college for nutritional coaching and has been seeing clients full time since 2015. Kelly truly loves the science behind nutrition and uses the power of it to motivate her clients and elevate their nutrition choices. She admits that she doesn’t believe in eliminating food groups, but does stress the importance of finding the right balance for YOUR body (hint blood sugar plays a big role). We talk about several aspects of this philosophy and you can find even more of them in her new book, Body Love. I related with so much of this conversation and suspect that you will too, so be prepared for your brain to grow a little. -- Question Highlights: Is there any exercise you do to help yourself get really clear on what you need? When a client has the same issue repeatedly is there something you always look at or are there multiple tests? For people who are stuck, where do you begin? How do you balance the points between sticking to it and sabotage? What are some of the main side effects that you see? Have you ever been addicted to caffeine? What is the biggest myth you’ve run into when looking at intake forms? Do you ever see where you can find joy in experiences versus food? What do you do when you’re seeking comfort? What have you learned about yourself because of eating cleaner? In This Episode We Talk about: Bio-individuality and Kelly’s pillars of nutritional needs Learning to love yourself at your fit weight Intuitive eating How Kelly uses science to motivate clients The importance and effects of insulin and cortisol Side effects of different foods How science can set you free with your diet Avoiding the drastic “pendulum swings” and finding balance Setting attainable goals What Kelly does to decompress Making healthier replacement comfort foods Taking charge of your health and understanding it How a glucometer works And so much more… Quotes: “You have to be willing to change.” “If you’re balanced and satisfied, you know what you can and can’t do.” “Little changes become habits.” “Make it a choice, not a cheat.” “Blood sugar is an indicator of what’s to come.” -- Kelly LeVeque is a celebrity nutritionist, wellness expert, and best selling author based in Los Angeles, California. Before starting her consulting business, Be Well By Kelly, she worked in the medical field for Fortune 500 companies like J&J, Stryker, and Hologic, eventually moving into personalized medicine, offering tumor gene mapping and molecular subtyping to oncologists. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California and completed her postgraduate clinical education at UCLA and UC Berkeley. Kelly’s client list includes Jessica Alba, Chelsea Handler, Kate Walsh and Emmy Rossum. An Entrepreneur’s Journey to a Sale Have you ever wondered what the entrepreneurship journey looks like? There are a lot of components! Today we’re going to be talking to Kelly Caldwell. Kelly is a successful entrepreneur who started with a wildlife science degree and working in a zoo and ended up growing her business to $25 million in revenue and then sold it to a public company. She’s got a great story, and you won’t want to miss it! In this episode, you’ll learn: The first decision that Kelly made in order to jump into entrepreneurship with both feet. Information about Kelly’s early career experience that led to her starting her own business. Some of the challenges and milestones that Kelly met shortly after starting her business, including how she handled the cash cycle. The direction that Kelly wanted to go in as the business grew, as well as how she shifted from growth mode to big-business mode. Some of the considerations that Kelly had to keep in mind as she looked forward to selling, as well as what she thought the probable outcome would be once she sold. How Kelly kept her employees in mind as she considered interested buyers. What Kelly wanted in terms of both price and terms from a sale and how it turned out. The emotions that Kelly went through when she went through the sale and integrating with the new company. One thing that Kelly might have done differently on her entrepreneurial journey. What Kelly is doing now in her life after business. The entrepreneurial process is different for each of us, this is true. However, there are some core similarities all entrepreneurs share: we start with a passion to do or fix something, discover a niche for it and then exploit that opportunity in the best way possible. Meet Kelly Caldwell, co-founder of AK Environmental, who saw the opportunity to delve into the niche market of environmental assessments (predominantly for the energy industry), and who managed to have a successful exit from her company 12 years later. So how did she do it? Develop the Right Relationships As with all great entrepreneurs, Kelly recognized her limitations. She entered into a partnership with her friend Amy who had strengths in the areas Kelly did not — Amy did sales and client retention, all the business-building stuff, and Kelly tackled the financial side. Each was incredibly happy with this setup since it played to their natural talents and interests and kept them working together. To top that off, they had excellent communication. Throughout their entire business relationship, they kept the communication lines open for everything from run-of-the-mill business issues to more complex conversations about future development and exit planning. Amy, for example, was ready for retirement after the ten year mark; Kelly was ready to exit the company, but unsure if she would continue working after or not. The two of them had open and honest conversations about the situation and came to the mutual decision of selling their company — provided they could find the right buyer.

This week's episode of the This Week in Weddings podcast is all about expecting the unexpected. When it comes to running a small business in the wedding industry, we rarely think about the "what if" -- what happens if we get sick, if there's a death in the family, if our spouse is ill and we become caretakers? While these are all things we never think will happen to us, it never hurts to be prepared. In this episode of the podcast, we're diving into one wedding entrepreneur's journey when her husband experienced a health crisis resulting in multiple brain surgeries. Our guest, Kelly Simants, not only shares her story with This Week In Weddings listeners, but gives advice on how to be prepared for when the unexpected arises. About our guest: Kelly Simants, serial Entrepreneur, has been in the wedding industry since 2001. She has created a full life-cycle of brands – from proposal planning for guys (Planning for Dudes), to wedding planning (Sweet Pea Events in Dallas, Seattle and NYC), to birthday parties for kids (Parties on the Porch)…She also was co-owner of Sage Wedding Pros for 7 years along with Michelle Loretta, and consulted wedding professionals on all things business – specifically, creating business plans and consulting with entrepreneurs on the HR side of their small business. She loves to share her expertise, not only the event industry, but also from the business world as prior to her event life she was a Director of Human Resources for Starbucks Coffee Company. In 2016, she passed the Dallas office of Sweet Pea Events on to Meaghan Cody as she returned to the Human Resources field and is now the Vice President of Human Resources for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Outside of dreaming up new businesses and non-profit work, Kelly loves to spend time with her family – husband Chris, two boys Carson (8 years old) and Cole (3 years old). Kelli M. Coleman grew up in Detroit with her parents as a child surrounded by other successful African-American adults who, by all appearances, had it all. They were successful, had great careers and businesses and enjoyed loving, enduring personal relationships. This model of success became an important part of Kelli's evolution as she, at age 10, entered into the family business (her father, Don Coleman, founded Global Hue -- which is the largest independently owned multicultural advertising firm in the United states) and later as she became an entrepreneur on her own terms. What Kelly didn't expect was that her own personal development and independence -- outside of the shadow of her dad's successful business -- would require a different model. One that placed her in a position where she could either continue to meet expectations, or she could be a woman who dares. After much soul searching, and with some support, she decided to dare, and since then, Kelli has inspired other women around the world to do the same. Kelli, who is an award-winning marketer and advertising executive, is now founder and CEO of her own company, KM Coleman Group, which advises businesses led by or built for women. She is also the founder of the She Who Dares initiative, which tackles the importance of personal development and speaks to the extraordinary side in every woman through events and conversations. This Friday, December 16th, Kelli will host a free She Who Dares event in Atlanta at Lenox Square in Bloomingdales with a panel of moderated by yours truly and featuring powerhouse women including Tai Beauchamp, Valeisha Butterfield Jones, Dr. Karmetria Burton and Kelli! If you're in the area, please come by, enjoy and say hello! (Link below) On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Kelli talks about the moment she knew it was time to make a move, how to be ignore the expectations, the importance of surrounding yourself with a village to support you and the power of becoming a woman who dares. On this episode you'll learn: How to step away from the family business. How to free yourself from the assertion of expectations. How she defines legacy (and how we can redefine it for ourselves). The importance of going through a phase of discomfort. How to know when it's time to move on.The importance of personal growth and discovery for every entrepreneur. Why avoiding uncertainty is crippling. Her master plan for shifting (and the resources that help her create a new life). The importance of knowing what you DON'T want. How to be a woman who dares. What started as a few family vacations grew into a strong sense of home in the mountains and a single ski season quickly turned into many. In an effort to thrive in such an environment Kelly and her partner began to craft advanced technical fabrics that performed in a wide array of conditions in an effort to enhance outdoor experiences instead of restricting them. What Kelly believes is an obligation to protect the lands we enjoy means many decisions go into everything from choosing fabrics to who the company helps to support and a portion of every sale goes toward land stewardship. Topics of this chat include: - Branding - Leading with technical fabric - Grading and measuring from scratch - Difficulties in selling direct - The balance of art and business - Traceable sourcing - Pivots - Maintaining company culture - Giving your brain space - Home and work split - The dirty side of a startup - Dealing with stress tests - Having business advisors - Scaling and systems - Communication - Cash flow
"I started learning that I did have power, even though for most of my life I felt like I had none." - Kelly Davis One Thing to Takeaway You're Not Alone One of the main points my guest, Kelly Davis, stressed in this podcast was how early in life she felt alone with her mental illness. She knew as early as grade 1-2 that her feelings were "too big" for her body but at this age she had no way to articulate how she was feeling. "I didn't have the words and I didn't want to feel that way." This isolation led her into being bullied, toxic relationships, abusing substances and attempting to take her own life. In the podcast, she talks about the profound impacting growing up in isolation had on her. As she got older she began to take back control of her. She talks about the personal work she did; the impact group therapy had on her and how yoga allowed her to connect with her body in a safe way. She shares how changing her story from a victim to a survivor was a huge step in her development and the importance of viewing her emotional sensitivity as a gift. In the podcast, Kelly reiterates how we're not alone on our journey, especially if we're battling with mental illness. Who is Kelly Davis? Kelly Davis works for a non-profit called Mental Health America. She is focused on improving policies in the USA around mental health. A few months back she spoke at the White House on a panel regarding mental health and discussed how recovery is not being stressed enough in the mental health discussion. She also leads a group fitness class and recently became a certified yoga instructor. Why Did I Bring Kelly Onto the Show? I brought Kelly onto the show because when I heard Kelly's story with mental health, I knew it could have an impact on others. I instantly connected with her story of isolation, as I experienced a similar journey as a bisexual man, being along and confused for a long period. I believe Kelly's journey to overcome her battle with mental illness and rid herself of the demons holding her back, would serve others on a similar path. My guest today is Kerry Taylor. Her website, Squawkfox, was voted Canada’s best money blog by the Globe & Mail in 2010, and in 2014 Chatelaine said she was the "gold standard for personal finance blogging”. I’ve followed Kerry’s work for many years, so I was very interested to read her Globe & Mail article where she described her visit to Mogo Lounge, operated by Mogo, a new “sexy, fintech” lender. What Kelly discovered was today's new form of payday and alternative lender. No more ugly yellow stores, these new loan shops have a much more attractive approach. Nice looking locations that look more like lounges than payday loan outlets, they offer free water, an online app - and best of all a 3 minute signup process. In addition, they give you a free credit report, with your credit score. As we discuss on the show, Mogo markets themselves to people who feel like they are “getting screwed by the banks” (and those are the words on the packages of free condoms they hand out). Their marketing pitch is simple: go to the app, get your credit score for free, and in three minutes you may get pre-approved for a loan of up to $35,000 with rates starting at 5.9%. But are the rates really that good? What’s the catch? And what do condoms have to do with it. That’s what we discuss on today’s show.
