In our first podcast back after the summer break, Rachel talks with Dr Giles P Croft about his take on how to beat stress and burnout. Giles is a psychology graduate and former NHS surgeon who stepped aside from clinical practice for a decade to explore a number of career paths, including health informatics, cycling journalism, public speaking and high street retail with his wife.He is now back in the healing profession, tackling the root cause of chronic mental stress and its many harmful effects by helping clients reconnect to their natural, inbuilt state of health. He lives and works in the Brecon Beacons National Park with his wife and 6 year old daughter. As human beings, we are designed to default to a setting which is at peace and happy. The problem is that so often our thinking gets in the way of this, causing feelings which make us feel that something is dreadfully wrong. Whilst feelings can be a useful indicator light to what’s going on with our thinking – they are rarely ‘ the absolute truth’ .Giles believes that if we can just stop trying to ‘do stuff’ to make ourselves feel better, and just leave ourselves to default to our innate factory settings, and live in the present, we will feel- and think much better, and our stress will disappear. We chat about how to avoid secondary suffering by layering unhelpful thoughts on top of events and talk about the ‘soft flute of intuition’ which will help tell us what we really need in any given moment. Giles’s top 3 tips are:Ask yourself ‘where are my feelings coming from right now?’Look at your hands regularly to stay in the present moment. Rachel Braun Scherl has passionately focused on driving the conversation on the business of women’s sexual and reproductive health. Her bestselling book called Orgasmic Leadership reflects a wellspring of deep personal experience in pharmaceuticals, consumer products, women’s health as well as in depth interviews with leaders in the sexual wellness field. In this episode we discuss COVID boredom – yes it’s a thing and yes, it’s possible to be totally bored even while busy. We talk about the factors that are increasing our boredom and think about what we can do to avoid making drastic and rash changes that won’t help.To combat boredom, we need to connect more to our meaning and purpose in life. Getting busier and busier won’t help, sometimes we need to dig down deeper and stay in the present moment rather than just distracting ourselves with less than helpful coping strategies. Changing things up a bit – even just changing your environment or what you eat every day can be helpful. We all need to grow and develop so finding something that offers a challenge can be the best way to beat boredom, be it learning a new skill, taking a course or just doing something outside our comfort zone. We’ll be tackling various different topics as they emerge in order to help doctors keep their head in the game and stay focussed and resilient. In this episode, we talk about the unrealistic expectations we have of ourselves right now. Perhaps we think we should be doing more to help? Improving ourselves? Doing that CPD we’ve never got round to doing? Spring cleaning the house or making our garden perfect? Yet many of us are finding that we’re just not able to do all this right now and our productivity seems to be lower than we’d like. This is OK.We need to adjust our expectations of ourselves (rather than ‘lower’ them)As doctors, we are so often driven by our need to ‘do’ and our need to help. We judge our worth by what we’ve achieved and so when we feel uncomfortable emotions such as anxiety or sadness we turn quickly to action to ‘fix’ the problem. Caroline and Rachel chat about the need for self-compassion and about how to recognise the emotions we are feeling. We discuss the vital question we need to ask ourselves ‘What do I need right now’ and also chat about how we can find it hard to receive help and compassion from others. Doctors – we need you more than ever. Keep up the good work. Keep your heads. Keep caring. Rachel is joined again by Dr Caroline Walker, The Joyful Doctor. Caroline is a Psychiatrist, therapist, specialist in the wellbeing of doctors & host of The Joyful Doctor Podcast. This is the third in a new series of podcast episodes and videos – COVID-19 Supporting Doctors. In these difficult times, Caroline & Rachel are working together to bring you as much support as they can. We’ll be tackling various different topics as they emerge in order to help doctors keep their head in the game, stay focussed & resilient. In this episode, we talk about moral injury - the distress we feel when our actions (or lack of them) violate our moral or ethical code. Doctors are already being asked to work in ways that are alien to them and may feel quite wrong. We have been trained to care for the patient in front of us, and it becomes hard when we have to make difficult decisions which have a huge impact. We chat about the sorts of moral injury that frontline workers may experience, the role of ethical guidance and individual decision making and discuss the sorts of symptoms you may experience if you are suffering from moral injury. Connecting with others, having regular check-ins, not neglecting the basics in caring for yourselves and your teams are ways to help prepare for what may come. If you are suffering, speaking to other people, making sure you don’t do this alone and getting the professional support and advice you need early will help. Doctors – we need you more than ever. Welcome to the TRUE NORTH COLLECTIVE PODCAST: SEASON 3! With co-hosts Rachel Bellotti and Jenell Riesner, this is a gathering of un-sugar-coated conversations celebrating the untold stories of everyday people fearlessly finding and living their true north. In our own search to discover and live from our TRUE NORTH, we continue to meet many interesting, courageous people from all walks of life, doing all sorts of amazing things to live life in their own unique way. Stories from all over the world. Stories with heart. Stories with grit. Stories with plot twists. Stories going untold - until now. This season, we celebrate these untold stories of everyday people who are fearlessly living their true north and inspiring each of us to do the same. Today, we talk about Rachel’s epic two-week trip to Egypt and unpack what made it “life-changing”. We consider ancient civilizations with advanced technologies from over 100K years old, being open to new cultures and ideas, how travel can change your life and fuel a sense of self-discovery, and how perspective truly creates your reality. Let’s take a trip! *note: this episode includes explicit language appropriate for those ages 16+ RESOURCES MENTIONED: Contact in the Desert Gaia Hugh Newman Megalithomania tours Soul of Egypt tours Mena House Giza Power Plant by Christopher Dunn Ancient Technologies of the Gods Graham Hancock Music from: https://www.jukedeck.com/ 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS: Any idea can have merit and all voices matter. Even if they seem far-fetched, there is SO much that we don’t know. So, even a small seed or essence of a seemingly hair-brained idea could have merit to consider. It might not solve the whole puzzle, but it could get you from “s” to “t” and that might make a world of difference to the bigger answer. Plus, by shutting down certain ideas, we shut down creativity and imagination in general, which is what we need to continue to evolve and grow as humans. Your perspective projects your reality onto whatever you are looking at and experiencing. And if you aren’t willing to open up your perspective to new ideas and thoughts, then you kind of become stagnant as you are simply forcing any new info into your already existing construct. What if you could allow some curiosity and openness to have a dialogue that stretches your imagination and opens up new possibilities that you never thought could exist? And when you realize that something different could exist...now what is possible for your life and for society? Half the fun of life is going on your own journey of discovery. Don’t just take the stories from others as your own, go do the things that excite you and create your own viewpoint and questions and answers! And then continue to have conversations with other people who are doing the same to exponentially expand the world’s ideas and concepts. What does it mean to be a medical intuitive? How do our emotions, thoughts, feelings and past experiences effect our physical bodies? Where does this intuitive knowing “come from”? How does Rachel help her clients heal without modern medicine? AND…Rachel does a live intuitive reading on me & my own health on this podcast. This is the FIRST time we’ve ever met/spoken, other than a few emails prior. It got pretty vulnerable for me, and really freakin real. If I had any doubts in the back of my head before we recorded this podcast, they all disappeared in the first few minutes of our reading. ————— ABOUT RACHEL: Rachel Reimer is a Medical Intuitive. Her job is to help someone understand why they aren’t feeling well and what steps they can take to start on their journey towards better health. She accomplishes this through someone’s name and a recent picture to receive the insights. Our physical symptoms are merely physical manifestations of how we feel on the inside. To change physical symptoms, one must address their thoughts and beliefs. Once this starts to occur, the body starts to function better and the individual has a deeper sense of who they are. Her company, Rae of Hope LLC, believes that the body has the ability to heal itself at the physical, emotional and spiritual level. Rachel Molenda is a Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Emotional Eating Coach, who helps women heal their relationship with food and their body by breaking free from dieting, rigid rules and discovering the power of intuitive eating and eating #RealAssFood. Rachel shares her personal struggle with food that started at 8th grade and evolved as an eating disorder. Rachel was very critical with her body, binging and going in and out of diets; this lasted for 10 years of suffering, until she started a positive connection with food, recovered the pleasure of eating and connected with exercise and movement. Rachel believes that the first thing needed is to heal the emotional relationship with food, overcoming this emotional eating is the priority, but how to start? Rachel proposes a series of first steps: 1. Bring awareness to what is happening with your eating habits. 2. Ask yourself: What are your triggers? 3. How dieting has or hasn't served you? To start healing the connection with your food -- intuitive eating is a must. Intuitive eating is listening and honoring the needs of your body, including all foods: All Foods, yes! Rachel explains the importance of overcoming the fear for certain foods and shifting the focus to how you feel when you are eating them and breaking, this way, the dieting cycle. On Rachel’s personal path, exercising and moving were the following steps into connecting with how her body was feeling and by listening to those signs she realized she needed a change, and honored her body by slowing down and acquiring a different exercise routine.
