We are bombarded daily with choices and risk becoming increasingly preoccupied and self-absorbed.  The Gospel of Luke, Chapter Ten introduces us to two extraordinary women who invited Jesus into their home.  On this occasion, Martha was too busy to be blessed.  On the other hand, her sister Mary ends the evening sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to the Word.  While Martha was pulled and pressured by her work and the immediate needs of the moment, Mary withdraws from what she was doing and sits quietly at the feet of Jesus and listens to His teaching.  She overcame the “attraction of distraction” and so can you!  This message tells us how.

SERMON SUMMARYIn our ongoing series about spiritual roots, this week we explored how to protect the foundation of our faith by identifying and confronting lies that threaten our growth. Just as weeds compete with plants for essential resources, lies rob us of spiritual growth and give the enemy strongholds in our lives. We examined three common lies that believers face. First, the lie that we must perform to earn Jesus' love, illustrated through Martha's story in Luke 10:38-42. While Martha busied herself with preparations, Mary chose the "good portion" - simply being present with Jesus. Our works aren't inherently bad, but when they take priority over His presence, they become hindrances.Second, we tackled the lie that our past makes us unredeemable. Paul's transformation from persecutor to apostle demonstrates that Jesus' death didn't leave us half-redeemed. Romans 8:38 reminds us that nothing can separate us from God's love - not our past failures or future struggles. Finally, we addressed the lie that we're not enough. Moses' insecurities in Exodus 4 reveal how God's strength is made perfect in our weakness. The real lie isn't that we're inadequate, but that God isn't sufficient for us.Our minds are fertile soil where something will always grow. We must daily choose whether to cultivate truth or allow deception to take root. As 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 teaches, we take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ, demolishing strongholds through divine power.URF WEBSITE: ➤ http://www.urfellowship.comSOCIALS:➤ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/urfellowship/➤ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/urfellowship

Luke 10:38-42 (Verse 42) Matthew 6:32-33; Matthew 6:19-21, 24 (Treasures in Heaven)This brief text underlines two main points: first, that Jesus looks to both men and women to be dedicated disciples; Second, that in our physical, societal lives our goals and priorities are more easily earthly, the heavenly goals are more difficult and ethereal. This is part of our fallen human nature and it's focus that's why the Gospels present such episodes our text where earthly practiced good duties are considered important but we should also include and make room for the spiritual and as difficult as it may be for us fallen humans, Christ's Kingdom and calling should be prioritized not only by full-time ministers, but for every believer and as I emphasized many times before, God promises to provide needed help( Matthew 6:32-33; Luke 11:3) This brief episode in Mary and Martha's (Lazarus sisters), lives demonstrates that what can distract us from our expected devotion to Christ, His calling and Kingdom are good, practical earthly things, in this case a cultural expectations for honorable women to prepare a feast for an honored rabbi; what would be wrong with this? But, this text interprets this good thing being done as a distraction(verse 40) in contrast to Mary's adoration of Jesus “... (sitting at the Lord's feet listening to what He said(His word)? While Martha was covering all the basis of societal, cultural expectations for such an event Mary seemed to not be doing her part for the honored guest and this bothered Martha. And she demanded that He command Martha to “help me”. Jesus' response to Martha is culturally counter intuitive in that society. Martha Martha… you are worried about many good things but compared to them there are more important things, summarized as only “a few or even one.” Mary has come up short for the expected societal demand, but has chosen what is better and even if the soup prepared gets cold, her taking time to worship Jesus will be accepted. This does not mean that Martha, Mary don't also have good earthly duties beyond hospitality and even more important societal responsibilities to family, careers, comfort, upward mobility, but these come also because they are not easily detectable distractions as to our calling from Christ. While we strive to not commit clear heinous sins that are obvious to all, there exist other demons behind the so-called respectable actions that take up too much of our time and energies and they then become a distraction to our relationship with God and our service to Him. Satan's temptation of Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4, Luke 4) included some good practical earthly suggestions for a fasting, starving Jesus: “Jesus turn the stones to bread, for you are physically hungry, this would be a good thing, even a good thing to do, but Jesus said No! (“It is written, humans and even Jesus, shall not live on bread alone (Luke 4:4).” It would have been a good thing but Jesus taking this road would have led to a distraction from His mission. Other stories of women ministry to Jesus make similar points: first, a sinful woman anoints Jesus feet with tears, even pouring expensive perfume on them in the supper at the Pharisee's house. Jesus becomes a display of repentance but for the Pharisee, this was a distraction from holiness and proof that Jesus may not be a true prophet. After all and possibly a waste of something very expensive. Second, possibly the same event in Mark 14:3-9 Jesus becomes was rebuked by those present as a waste of a years wages that could have been sold and given to the poor; but to Jesus it was a “beautiful thing she did to prepare for His burial,” as out of worship, their seeming reasonableness in this situation became a distraction. Judas Iscariot was one of the critics who shortly after the betrayal of Jesus (verses 10-11). Third, a similar strong reprisal in Matthew 26:6-13 Jesus' indignant audience spiritually could not see beyond their legalistic no

In our exploration of discipleship, we've uncovered a profound truth: the essence of following Jesus isn't just about doing things for Him, but being with Him. The story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10 beautifully illustrates this. While Martha was distracted by her many tasks, Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen. This isn't a condemnation of service, but a reminder that our primary calling is to be present with Christ. How often do we, like Martha, invite Jesus into our lives only to tune Him out with our busyness? We're challenged to consider: are we too distracted to truly follow Jesus? Our culture of constant connectivity and endless to-do lists can pull us away from deep communion with God. Yet, the 'archetypal image of discipleship' isn't frantic activity, but sitting at Jesus' feet. Let's reflect on how we can cultivate a spirit of attentiveness to Christ amidst life's demands, seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness.

The story of Mary and Martha illustrates how busyness can prevent us from experiencing God's presence fully. While Martha became consumed with tasks, Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen. Today, we need to intentionally unplug from digital noise, create space for God in our daily routines, and build our foundation on scripture and prayer. By setting boundaries around technology use and prioritizing spiritual growth, we can develop a deeper connection with God.

Cari dives into how we can balance devotion and service in our own lives, letting go of distractions and focusing on what truly matters: sitting at the feet of Christ. Whether you relate to Martha's busyness or long for Mary's peace, this episode offers practical insights to align your heart with His presence.Verses: Luke 10:38-42   As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.  She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.  But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,  but few things are needed—or indeed only one. In this service, join Ps Anthony as he teaches on the importance of rest in our lives. We should take the posture of Mary instead of Martha and continue to stay at the Lord's feet.Crowds often characterize Christmas. Shopping centers, roads, airports, and even homes become overcrowded with people, activities, and decorations. Unfortunately, amidst this busyness, Jesus is often forgotten. Richard Foster, in Celebration of Discipline, notes that “noise, hurry, and crowds” are the tools our adversary uses to distract us. This is particularly evident during the holiday season, where excessive activity can pull us away from rest in God.The story of Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38–42) exemplifies this. While Martha was overwhelmed with serving, Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen. Jesus highlighted that Mary chose the "one thing" that truly mattered. This illustrates the importance of inward rest—a posture of faith and trust in God's completed work.Scripture teaches that rest is not laziness but trust in God's provision (Hebrews 4:11). Jesus invites us to abide in Him, producing fruit without anxiety or hurry (John 15:5). He offers peace that transcends circumstances (John 14:27), allowing us to guard our hearts and live free from the burdens of the past or future (Proverbs 4:23, Matthew 6:11).In a hurried world, rest becomes a spiritual discipline. Battles are won not by striving but by trusting and feeding on God's Word. As Psalm 23:5 reminds us, God prepares a table for us even in the presence of enemies. True victory comes from sitting in His presence, resting in His finished work, and embracing the now—the time of His favor (2 Corinthians 6:2).Therefore, slow down. Be present. Trust God. Rest is the posture of faith, and in rest, you will find peace, favor, and wholeness.

Presented by Lauren Stibgen Whether at work or at home, we can all experience the feeling of working harder than someone else. We are examining the hard feelings of jealousy. We have seen how jealousy can truly be rooted in envy, and in this case, it is envy about the perceived advantage someone may have when they don't work as hard as we do. For some of us this could have started back in school. Were you the one who studied and toiled on papers only to get a C while another student in class never touched a book and magically got an A? While they were off having a great time, you were stuck at the library with your nose in your books! Fast forward, you are working on a project team. This time, it isn't about working for a grade but to get an important project done. One of your colleagues spends all her time in the boss's office, talking about the project deliverables, but doesn't do any of the work. When the project is complete, she receives equal accolades for the project's success. You are quick to schedule a meeting to tell your boss about what she didn't do because you are jealous of the advantage she had receiving credit and not pulling her weight. To your surprise, your boss doesn't feel this way. In fact, she tells you how much she appreciated your colleague keeping her posted about the project. This scenario is not unlike my two favorite sisters in the New Testament, Mary and Martha. In Luke 10:38-42 we learn that Jesus goes to their house to spend time with his disciples and teach. While Martha toiled and served, Mary sat at Jesus feet to listen to his teaching. Frustrated because her sister is not working to serve alongside her, she goes to Jesus asking him to get her sister to work. If you know this story, you know Jesus says Martha is anxious and troubled about many things. She was jealous of the position Mary took at the feet of Jesus. God doesn't want us to compare our work to the work of others. When we fall into this comparison, it can lead to feelings of jealousy. And, as we have seen, jealousy can lead to even deeper feelings rooted in sin. Focus on doing your very best. I find when I think about what someone else is or isn't doing it takes my eye off doing my very best.

In our spiritual journey, we often find ourselves in a battle for our attention. This message challenges us to consider where our focus truly lies and how we can prioritize God's kingdom above all else. The story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 beautifully illustrates the importance of sitting at Jesus' feet and giving Him our undivided attention. While Martha was distracted by many tasks, Mary chose to focus on Jesus, teaching us that our primary calling is to be with Him before doing for Him. This parallel invites us to reflect on our own lives – are we too busy serving that we forget to simply be in His presence? As we navigate a world full of distractions, we're reminded of Jesus' words in Matthew 6:33 to 'seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.' By consciously choosing to focus on God, we can experience His peace, hope, and joy, even amidst life's challenges. Let's examine our habits and routines, ensuring they keep us rooted in Christ and attentive to His voice.

As the local midwife and healer, Martha is good at keeping secrets. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, every murder and debacle that unfolds in the town of Hallowell. In that diary she also documented the details of an alleged rape that occurred four months earlier. Now, one of the men accused of that heinous attack has been found dead in the ice.  While Martha is certain she knows what happened the night of the assault, she suspects that the two crimes are linked, and that there is more to both cases than meets the eye. Over the course of one long, hard winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha's diary lands at the centre of the scandal and threatens to tear both her family and her community apart.    Resurrection Walk - Michael Connelly  Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller enlists the help of his half-brother, Harry Bosch, to prove the innocence of a woman convicted of killing her ex-husband.  Defence attorney Mickey Haller is back, taking the long shot cases, where the chances of winning are one in a million. After getting a wrongfully convicted man out of prison, he is inundated with pleas from incarcerated people claiming innocence. He enlists his half-brother, retired LAPD Detective Harry Bosch, to weed through the letters, knowing most claims will be false.   Bosch pulls a needle from the haystack: a woman in prison for killing her ex-husband, a sheriff's deputy, but who still maintains her innocence. Bosch reviews the case and sees elements that don't add up, and a sheriff's department intent on bringing quick justice in the killing of one of its own.   Now Haller has an uphill battle in court, a David fighting Goliaths to vindicate his client. The path for both lawyer and investigator is fraught with danger from those who don't want the case reopened and will stop at nothing to keep the Haller-Bosch dream team from finding the truth.    LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In Week 1, Pastor Jeff looks at the story of Jesus' time with Mary and Martha from Luke 10. Both women faced the same opportunity, yet had different experiences based on their sense of what was most important. Although being busy is the world's pattern, it is not God's. While Martha's duty was important, Jesus said that what Mary had discovered was better. Similarly, we need to make room in our walk with God, leaving room for what really matters. 1) Duty is a good thing 2) Devotion is also a good thing 3) Duty perceives devotion as the shirking of duty 4) Devotion is perceived by Jesus as a precious discovery

In a world consumed by busyness and distractions, it's easy to overlook the value of spending time with Jesus. Just like Martha in the biblical story, we often find ourselves caught up in the demands of life, missing out on the best part. But there's a lesson to be learned from Mary, who recognized the power that comes from sitting at Jesus' feet and feasting on His words. One particular visit by Jesus to Mary and Martha's house is recorded in Luke 10. While Martha busied herself with preparations, Mary chose to prioritize her time with Jesus. Despite Martha's frustration, Mary understood the importance of her spiritual health and the power that came from being in the presence of the Lord. We all have our "Martha moments" when we get caught up in work and responsibilities, neglecting our relationship with Jesus. We can become dried up like a once-flowing creek bed, longing for the days when we were full of life. But the truth is, power and satisfaction come from spending time with Jesus, not from our own human efforts. While hard work is valuable, we shouldn't neglect the precious moments spent with Jesus. Being in the midst of life's challenges doesn't mean we put our lives on hold. Instead, we can lean into this season, growing closer to God and allowing His living water to flow through us, refreshing and restoring not only ourselves but those around us. So, let us prioritize the best part, spending time with Jesus, and experiencing the power and satisfaction that come from knowing Him deeply. Subscribe to Our Channel!   New to LifeRock? Martha Krejci is a sober woman in long-term recovery, a business strategist, author, and motivational speaker. While Martha had a good upbringing, she did experience childhood trauma that resulted in abandonment issues when her older sister--who played a large part in raising her--left for college when she was a young child. She used alcohol as a way to help her overcome being an introvert and experiencing social anxiety and awkwardness in hopes of keeping people from leaving her. Martha shares her story about pregnancy loss and blaming her alcoholism for her miscarriage, which ultimately motivated her to quit drinking cold turkey. She let go of the negative thoughts and viewed herself as a strong woman--a superhero--making the choice to create a healthy womb for a baby to grow in. Her husband was an incredible support to her, and we talked about the need to have support and connection from people while in recovery. Martha and I discussed the negative thinking patterns and self-talk that can sometimes take over and make us believe things about ourselves that are not true--and the importance of being able to recognize that these thoughts are irrational as well as see the positive, true things about us. We also talked about being able to recognize when negative thoughts are coming from emotion or logic, and making sure we are being part of the solution to our negative experiences as opposed to contributing to the problem. You can find Martha in her Facebook group: Families Creating Legacies with Martha Krejci, or on her website withmartha.com. Are you a member of the Confident Sober Women Facebook group? There's Something About Mary

Luke 10:38-42Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted be her many tasks; so she came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” Jesus said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part which will not be taken away from her.” I was inspired by a Mary Oliver quotation this week while I was stewing about this morning's sermon. Maybe you saw my hint about it on social media yesterday. The quotation is short and sweet:“It is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world.”Her name, Mary, of course, and her namesake in this morning's Gospel seemed like something worth paying attention to. And many of us have heard this bit about Mary and Martha…Jesus has been pretty busy at this point in Luke's version of the story, as we've heard in the last few weeks. He's been working hard to prep his disciples to go out into the world to cure the sick, proclaim the good news, cast out demons – all of which they have done. Jesus, himself, has been casting out demons, preaching and teaching, healing and traveling from town to town and from place to place for all of the above, as well. And today he gets to “a certain village,” which we assume is a place called Bethany because we know, from John's Gospel, that that's where Mary and Martha lived with their brother Lazarus. And since John's Gospel also lets us know what good friends they all were – Jesus, Lazarus, Mary and Martha – I like to think Jesus showed up at Bethany and was welcomed, warmly, by Martha because it was a safe place for him to rest; that maybe it was a home away from home; that, at least, it was a place where he was among friends and away from the strangers and strange places he'd been visiting until then. And Martha's working hard to welcome her friend. Probably preparing food. Maybe making up the guest bed. Perhaps fetching water, wrangling the kids, filling lamps with oil, borrowing things from the neighbors, and whatever else a First Century homemaker did to make a guest feel at home. And all of this while her sister Mary is just hanging out with Jesus in the living room. So Martha asks for some help from Jesus to get Mary off her butt and to help a sister out. But Jesus surprises Martha – and maybe Mary – and probably whoever else was listening, because Mary wasn't doing what she was supposed to be doing according – not just to Martha – but according, too, to the social standards of the day. While Martha was filling her First Century shoes as a servant to the men, Mary was bucking the system, hanging out with Jesus, spending time with the guys, presumably, and NOT serving, but sitting; NOT doing, but being; NOT distracted by a litany of tasks, but dedicated to listening to her teacher. And that was perfectly fine with Jesus – and as it should be, as far as he was concerned. So I appreciate this reminder from Mary, of Bethany. And I appreciate the one from Mary Oliver, too, that “it is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world.” And I'd like to be a little bit more like them both, because sometimes I take the ‘serious' bit too seriously – especially as your Pastor and as a preacher in this place a lot of the time.Don't get me wrong, this is serious business, following Jesus and living lives of faith in this world, broken as it is. And I think this might have been some of Mary Oliver's point. But paying so much attention to the broken parts of it all are – and have been – tiresome in recent days, months, and years. And I suspect you've felt that, too.I've been banging the drum of anti-racism a whole heck of a lot around here – and I worry sometimes that that gets old. I've been waving a proverbial rainbow flag of acceptance, welcome and inclusion for our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters too, and I realize that's more work for some of us than it is for others. And we are bombarded with the horrifying reality of school shootings, abortion debates, wars, insurrections, and political divisions, too.I'm always working to encourage generosity and sacrifice where our financial resources are concerned. I'm forever looking to engage more and more of us in opportunities to get our hands dirty around here and out in the world. And so much of what I feel called to preach and teach from one week to the next is set up as a “holy challenge.” I realize I use that phrase a lot. I'm not apologizing for it. I think it's faithful. I believe it's what Jesus calls us to. I'm certain it makes us better and that it makes the world look a little bit more like the Kingdom of God.But it can be tiresome, like I said… overwhelming… exhausting...So, I wonder – and worry sometimes – that you might leave here feeling tired … or like there's always more – or too much – to do … or like you, or we, will never be able to do enough or to get it right or to meet the many needs of this broken world. In other words, our spiritual lives can feel and be a lot like Martha – racing around, distracted, worried, busying ourselves with everything there is to do and pointing fingers at anyone and everyone who's not playing along or helping out or doing their part.So this morning, I feel like the Marys – Mary Oliver and Mary, from Bethany – and Jesus, too, might be telling me to sit down and shut up.“It is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world.”It is a serious thing – and it's enough – just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world. And to acknowledge the gift of that.Just sit down, shut up, and be still. Just be here and be quiet. Just hear these words. Just take this sacrament. Just listen to God's promise and hope. Just accept this forgiveness, receive this mercy, and relish this grace, in all of its glory. And just know that God is God – even and especially of the broken parts. And trust that God's promise to redeem it all is a sure, certain, serious thing – for your sake, for mine, and for the sake of the world.Amen

In one of our recent “First Devotion” emails, a comment made by the economist John Maynard Keynes in 1930 was referenced: “What will we do with all our spare time?” Based on the rate of progress Keynes had observed at the time, he predicted that his future grandchildren would only need to work 15 hours a week. Everything was being automated so well that people would have little need to work. Of course, this prediction was clearly wrong as we have come to realize that greater automation often results in greater complexity along with higher expectations for efficiency. This week, we will reflect on the conflict between two sisters, Martha and Mary, that was born out of the different priorities they had in life which had prompted one to be more active and the other more reflective. While Martha was busy taking care of the guests at their home, Mary decided to stop and listen to the message offered by Jesus, who was one of those guests. Although Martha asked Jesus to rebuke her sister, Jesus refused saying “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things, but few things are needed—indeed only one. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.” Join us Sunday as we reflect on what that one thing that we need might be.

Five Minute Family
Love - Storge

Five Minute Family

Good morning, Five Minute Families. Today we continue our love series studying the Greek words used or indicated in the Bible; those four are agape, phileo, storge, and eros. We have discussed agape - God's unconditional love - and phileo - brotherly love. Many people will try to compare and rank the types of love. However, aside from agape, the other three loves are not meant to be comparative. Each is desirable. And, this week we are discussing storge - family love. Often, parents will mention how they “never knew true love until they had a child of their own.” One mother told me that her love for her first child revealed more to her of God's nature than any sermon ever has. Storge is quickly defined as a “natural love among family members.” While it is most often referred to as the parent/child love, it is a familial love among brothers, sisters, and grandparents as well. God has Paul use storge in a compound word form found in Romans 12:10 - “Love one another deeply as brothers and sisters. Take the lead in honoring one another.” And, that compound word for love in the original text is the combination of both phileo and storge - two loves combined by God for us to use to create an example of biblical community to the world. Thus, to take a comprehensive, biblical view of storge, we can see that it is a love of unity - unity in our families AND in our biblical communities. Let's take that first part of Romans 12:10 - to love as brothers and sisters, and let's talk about some brothers and sisters of the Bible. 1. Mary of the Mary/Martha sister combo shows us how to be a good role model. While Martha wanted Mary to fulfill what she saw as a family and societal obligation, Jesus pointed out that Mary was setting a good example of how to place God preeminently in our lives. 2. Esau shows us how to forgive within families even when we ourselves have made mistakes. Jacob and Esau had been separated for 21 years when Jacob returned. And, though Jacob had been blessed by God in his endeavors, Jacob was afraid of what Esau would do to him. Esau instead welcomed Jacob home and showered him with love. 3. Jacob's sons show us to accept one another despite our differences. In the beginning the twelve sons of Jacob were the epitome of a dysfunctional family, but they had to learn the lesson that our differences and our unique purposes can benefit one another. 4. Miriam kept an eye out for Moses when he had to be separated from their family and put into potential harm. She went out of her way to make sure that his rescuer - the Pharaoh's daughter - would get him the love and care he needed from their very own mother. Family members and church family members must be ready to go the extra mile for one another. 5. I don't often think of Andrew and Peter, two of Jesus's disciples, as brothers, but, they were, and as soon as Andrew heard that the Messiah had come, he ran and got his brother. In sharing his faith and joy, he got to be part of God's plan to bring Peter - the original Rock - to the Lord. Many people do not treat their biblical communities with a family-type love. They hold church members at arms' length, never choosing authenticity, service, and openness. We cannot force others to choose to view the church as family, but we can the best examples we can be by being good role models, forgiving one another, being devoted to one another, going out of our way to fill in the gaps for each other, and speaking the joyful wisdom of the Good News. The Bible is filled with one-anothering verses, and loving each other with a storge love is paramount to know how to one-another. Remember, 1 John 4:20 tells us that "Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen." And Proverbs 17:17 says, "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." Five minute families should

Psalms 141:1-2 2Tim 2:8 Revelation 8:3-4 Many people believe this is God's house, but they never expect Him to be home. Gen. 32:2 Mahanaim Extravagant gift of life….kidney Jesus gave more than a kidney Summary: Do all you can with all you have. I enjoy smelling things…well, most things. My favorite perfume for Celeste was purchased in Toronto. As soon as I smelled it, I knew I had to get it for her. I didn't even look at the price. Perfume can be pricey. The most expensive is called Golden Delicious and sold for $1 million! Another one called Imperial Majesty lists for almost $500,000. Perfume costs a lot for two reasons. • The ingredients are hard to find and difficult to extract. One of the most expensive ingredients is a secretion produced in the digestive system of certain types of whales. • Another is a fragrant resin emitted as a defense mechanism to starve mold infection on the most expensive wood in the world. Think about this the next time you spray some scent on your body. • The container or packaging can cause the price to skyrocket. The bottle that holds Golden Delicious contains 2,909 precious stones, including diamonds and rubies. It took a total of 1,500 hours to hand-place each stone to form the skyline of New York City. The Bible talks about smells, aromas, perfumes, COVID for some attacks and removes smells…coffee, bakeries, perfumes In Mark 14, we'll meet a woman who demonstrated her commitment to Christ by breaking an expensive container and pouring an extravagant amount of ointment on Jesus. Verses 1-2 provide the setting: “It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, for they said, ‘Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.'” Jerusalem was filled with people celebrating Passover, memorializing how God spared Israel while striking Egypt's firstborn sons. The Feast of Unleavened Bread recalls Israel's exodus from Egypt. In the midst of the religious celebration, the religious leaders are scheming how to arrest Jesus without causing a commotion among the people. Listen now to Mark 14:3-9: “And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon, the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. Some said to themselves indignantly, ‘Why was the ointment wasted like that? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.' And they scolded her. But Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.'” We'll use this outline to follow the natural flow of the text: 1. Duty demonstrated (3) 2. Disapproval delivered (4-5) 3. Appreciation described (6-9) Verse 8 provides the main point of the passage: “She has done what she could…” We could say it like this: Do all you can with all you have. 1. Duty demonstrated. Look at verse 3: “And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon, the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.” Bethany was the hometown of Lazarus, Martha and Mary and was only a few miles from Jerusalem. • • Their home was like a Bed and Breakfast for Jesus during the last week of his life. Jesus is having supper with “Simon, the leper.” We don't know much about him, but we can surmise that Jesus had healed him because if he still had leprosy, he would not have been allowed around people. It's likely that Lazarus, who was raised from the dead about a month earlier, was also there. Can you imagine the rejoicing going on from Simon, who had been cleansed from leprosy and from Lazarus, who had a new lease on life? They where worshiping The phrase “reclining at the table” reminds us that they didn't sit in chairs like we do but rather would stretch out on their sides with their head near the table and their feet pointing away. I wonder if we should try this in the dining room? We then read, “a woman came….” This interruption to the meal would have been against Jewish protocol. Mark doesn't identify her because he focuses not on who she is but on what she did. We know from John 12:3 that her name is Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. Interestingly, in the two other passages where Mary is mentioned, she's seen worshipping at the feet of Jesus. • In Luke 10:38-42, we learn that because Martha “was distracted with much serving,” she asks Jesus to get Mary to help her. Jesus corrects her hurried and harried heart while celebrating Mary's undivided devotion. While Martha is working, Mary is worshipping as she: “sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching.” • In John 11:32, after their brother Lazarus died, the two sisters are grieving and want to know why Jesus hadn't come sooner. It's interesting that while Martha greets Jesus respectfully, Mary worships Him reverently: “Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet….” There's been some confusion about the identity of this worshipping woman because there's another woman who anoints Jesus with expensive ointment during a meal.
