Wildcatters were "entrepreneurs" long before that word became a cliche for anyone willing to risk it all to start a business. So it should come as no surprise that UH is home to the top collegiate entrepreneurial program in America. In this episode, HBJ Editor-in-Chief Sean McCrory invites David Cook, Director of the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, to share why the program he leads is so successful.

Chuck had no idea what to expect when Jake and Collin came on but whatever. Was it going to be a performance review for Chuck? Hahaha. Schuyler Wight is a fourth-generation rancher who has raised cattle near Fort Stockton for decades. Now he's fighting a battle he did not create. Scattered across his sprawling 20,000-acre ranch are more than 100 abandoned oil and gas wells left behind by oil and gas companies. Water is now bubbling up from these abandoned oil wells and is polluting Wight's pasture and killing his cows. Abandoned “dry hole” oil wells are polluting Texas farms, ranches and groundwater. The state and the oil and gas industry won't fix them. Wildcatters drilled in random locations for decades looking for oil. Many were unsuccessful, but the drilling opened up layers of porous rock, which led to water and pollutants such as benzene and xylene, both carcinogens, flowing to the surface. Rather than cap the holes, the wildcatters and their oil companies — now long gone — often abandoned the wells or transferred ownership of unproductive wells to the previous owners of Wight's ranch to be used as water wells. The pollution from the wells is killing cattle and ruining pastures, as well as harming the groundwater of West Texas. Texas faces many water issues including groundwater pollution, aging infrastructure, drought, flooding, and population growth. Larry discusses these and many other topics related to Texas water with Schuyler Wight.
EPISODE #267 In today's episode, Chris is joined by Collin McLelland, co-founder of Digital Wildcatters, a community of energy professionals who are changing the way that we think about energy. After leaving high school, Collin knew that he wanted to be an entrepreneur and decided to learn about the oil and gas industry. He worked on roughnecking oil rigs in West Texas.Collin spent the next 10 years working on every major oilfield across the country, from Alaska all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. In 2018, Collin decided that millennial engineers needed a new way to think about oil and gas, and realizing that there was no way for people to get more information about the industry, and started The Oil and Gas Podcast. Just before the pandemic in 2020, Collin decided to go full-time on Digital Wildcatters, which tries to educate society and raise their awareness of the energy industry.Today, Collin speaks with Chris about his views on different energy types, why Bitcoin mining is actually good for the environment, and how he thinks about building a community.Key Takeaways:Intro (00:00)Collin's background (02:55)What Digital Wildcatters is trying to achieve (05:49)Why do oil and gas have such a bad reputation? In this episode of Wicked Energy with JG, Justin visits with Chuck Yates, Galactic Viceroy at Digital Wildcatters and host of the Chuck Yates Needs a Job Podcast. Chuck is a fellow podcaster with a long reputation in the oil and gas industry as well known for his comical, yet practical approach to the energy industry along with his 19 years as managing partner of the well known capital advising firm, Kayne Anderson. Following some comical stories, Chuck gets into some personal topics and shares some research that suggests that our level of insecurity comes from feeling worthy of love. Chuck elaborates by explaining his constant need for approval which goes back to his childhood and that much of our childhood has a major impact on the trajectory of the rest of our lives. As the conversation about mental health continues, Chuck makes an interesting comment that folks in the oil and gas industry face major mental health hurdles, especially due to the cyclical nature and high degree of uncertainty that comes with it. This leads into discussion around the challenges we face in oil and gas and the continued desire to constantly hit home runs instead of slow and steady growth and value creation. Today's guest is Collin McLelland, Co-Founder & CEO of Digital Wildcatters.Digital Wildcatters is a multimedia platform that offers podcasts, videos, and in-depth blogs detailing ideas to make the oil & gas and energy sectors cleaner and more efficient.Digital Wildcatters was founded in March 2020. Through Collin's podcast "Oil and Gas Startups", a show that started as a hobby, he has built a go-to platform for oil & gas tech and cultivated a community that wanted to disrupt the status quo. Collin grew up in the Permian Basin in West Texas, the largest oil and gas field in the contiguous 48 states. After graduating high school during the 2008 Recession, he worked as a wireline operator drilling oil wells and a project manager at Enventure Global Technologies where he managed the expandable casing installations on drilling and completions projects across the United States and the Gulf of Mexico. Most recently, Collin co-founded Stealth Startup a funded fintech company in the oil & gas sector. While Collin's background may not be that of MCJ's typical guest, I believe our purpose is to create bridges to tackle the massive problem of climate change. I was looking forward to speaking with Collin because of his experience in the oil & gas industry. Collin walks me through Digital Wildcatters, what the media company is working on, and why oil & gas needs to evolve. We also have a lively discussion on how climate impacts Collin's work, what role the government should play in the energy transition, and why Collin believes transitioning off of fossil fuels can create energy poverty. Collin is a great guest and we have a fascinating conversation.Enjoy the show! You can find me on twitter @jjacobs22 or @mcjpod and email at info@myclimatejourney.co, where I encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded September 30th, 2021For more about Digital Wildcatters or to listen to Collin's podcast, visit: https://www.digitalwildcatters.com/For more information about this episode, visit: https://myclimatejourney.co/episodes/collin-mclelland

On this episode of the Resistance Library Podcast Sam and Dave talk about the wildcatter, Charles Newton. Wildcatters are a specific subset of firearms enthusiasts – nerds among nerds, if you will. And their king is Charles Newton. Newton was an attorney whose wildcatting was a hobby, not a career. However, his work in the world of wildcatting resulted in what is a sort of crowning achievement for a wildcatter: A company took up one of his creations, the .22 Savage Hi-Power, which Savage Arms began making officially in 1912. Soon after this, Savage began manufacturing the .250-3000 Savage (also known as the 250 Savage). The 22 Savage boasted a high velocity for the time it was developed, which in turn led to a shocking display of power. Its killing power was seen as nothing short of miraculous for larger prey with relatively soft skin, such as tigers – this was the golden era of big-game hunting and the African safari. Reverend H. R. Caldwell brought notoriety to the round by using it to bag 400-pound tigers in China. This was exploited to great effect in the early advertising for the round. Although these stories, tunes and songs take place along the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike in northcentral West Virginia, they could be about many places in rural and small-town America. Part of Michael and Carrie Kline's 100-voice oral history project with 30 more musical performances by people along the historic road, themes in this podcast include the Civil War in western Virginia, the birth of West Virginia in the midst of the bloody Civil War, the origins and progression of the oil and gas industry, told by the people who lived it, along with an insider's view of small town life. This project was initiated by the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike Association, located in Beverly, West Virginia.
The federal government is granting leases that allow oil drilling on huge amounts of federal land in the state of Nevada. This is despite a fossil fuel market with highly depressed prices—and despite scant evidence that any oil actually exists below the Silver State. On this episode of Parts Per Billion, we talk with Bloomberg Law's Bobby Magill about the colorful bunch of so-called "wildcatters" who are not only willing but eager to search for oil in Nevada's vast public lands.

ONE TOO MANY ALIBIS PROVED FATAL FOR THE HEIRESS... Gil Vine is the quick-thinking, compassionate chief security officer at the fashionable Plaza Royale Hotel. While investigating a routine disturbance complaint in the Tower apartments, Gil finds himself enmeshed in a deadly struggle for control of a fabulous fortune in oil. The intrigue involves the beautiful, naïve Kierze sisters Sari and Maylene, ruthless T. Baker Barrow, king of the Wildcatters, suave Monsieur Armand Lejourd, and the inscrutable Ras Daklin. When Maylene Kierze, a girl who will tell any lie to alibi herself out of trouble, is murdered, Sari Kierze, her sister, inspires Gil, who believes her not only innocent but in danger, to outdo himself in detection. Two more people will be murdered before the fight over control of the oil fortune is ended. As always in the Gil Vine mysteries, life behind the scenes of a large hotel is painted for the listener in fascinating detail. Vine is at his best in this installment of the series as the hotel detective does his best to protect the Plaza Royale's reputation and also stop the series of murders. He will have to risk not only his life but his job if he hopes to untangle the web of intrigue and violence that holds the luxury hotel in its grip. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar was a radio drama about a "fabulous" freelance insurance investigator "with the action-packed expense account." The show aired on CBS Radio from January 14, 1949 to September 30, 1962. There were 811 episodes in the 12-year run, and more than 720 still exist today. Each story started with a phone call from an insurance executive, calling on Johnny to investigate an unusual claim. Each story required Johnny to travel to some distant locale, usually within the United States but sometimes abroad, where he was almost always threatened with personal danger in the course of his investigations. Johnny's file on each case was usually referenced as a "matter," as in "The Silver Blue Matter" or "The Forbes Matter." Later episodes were more fanciful, with titles like "The Wayward Trout Matter" and "The Price of Fame Matter" (the latter featuring a rare guest-star appearance: Vincent Price). Each story was recounted in flashback, as Johnny listed each line item from his expense account. Most of the items related to transportation and lodging, but no incidental expense was too small for Johnny to itemize, as in "Item nine, 10 cents. Aspirin. I needed them." Johnny usually stuck to business, but would engage in romantic dalliances with women he encountered in his travels; later episodes gave Johnny a steady girlfriend, Betty Lewis. Johnny's precious recreational time was usually spent fishing, and it was not uncommon for Johnny's clients to exploit this favorite pastime in convincing him to take on a job. The episodes generally finished with Johnny tallying up his account, making final remarks on the report, and traveling back to Hartford, Connecticut, where he was based. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-lantz/message

This week I sit down with legendary Texas wildcatter and CEO of Chisholm Exploration, Cactus Schroeder. Cactus is one of the smartest men you’ll find in the oil business. For 40 years, he's drilled around the most prominent basins of North America. And he's consulted on or invested in over 1,000 drilling projects. Cactus was featured on Discovery Channel’s Wildcatters – a television series that followed three people searching for oil and gas in areas other than oil fields. He's also credited with finding one of the largest oil-producing wells in the Eagle Ford – which he later sold to Norway’s Statoil for north of $1 billion. If you own any oil stocks, or thinking of jumping back into oil any plays, be sure to tune into this interview first... Cactus tells us where he thinks oil prices are heading... and the risks to consider today when placing your bets in this space. More importantly, he updates listeners on the breakeven prices needed to drill in the Permian, the Bakken, and the Eagle Ford… and why these “strike zone” numbers are vital to oil producers and investors going forward. Good Investing, Frank Curzio P.S. On this week’s Educational Segment we’ll discuss a trade Marin Katusa recommended last week. If you took action, you’d be up 60% in just four trading sessions. It's another example why sometimes – especially during this volatile earnings season – you just have to stick to your guns.
