Jessica unpicks the profound role that forests play in our imaginative life. We know of course that they feature heavily in the fairy tales and myths we use to navigate life as children, and as we hear from writers like Max Porter, Richard Powers and Melissa Harrison, they also offer ways of understanding the complexities of desire, politics and history in our adult lives. Poet Carl Phillips describes how forests mirror the wilderness within us, while Jinni Reddy tells of how she found beauty in the forest through facing down her fears. Writer Jessica J Lee, sets out to describe the myriad ways that forests operate in our lives and the life of the planet. She outlines the exciting developments that have taken place in our understanding of the ways forests work over recent decades, with science offering radical new ways of recognising these places as communities of mutually supportive trees rather than competitive spaces where individual trees fight one another for survival. She speaks with Peter Wohlleben who is one of the chief communicators of this ‘Wood Wide Web' idea, and also expert on fungi Merlin Sheldrake about the crucial importance of mycorrhizzal networks in forest life. Jessica also hears from biologist Diana Beresford Kroeger and Haida leader Miles Richardson about how this new science is built on the back of much older, traditional knowledge held within indigenous communities. Writer Jessica J Lee, sets out to describe the myriad ways that forests operate in our lives and the life of the planet. In the final part of ‘Under The Canopy', Jessica looks for stories of hope to set against the headlines depicting the mass deforestation that continues to take place around the world. She speaks with a variety of groups - in Canada, Burkina Faso, Brazil, Germany and Great Britain - who are finding different ways to re-invigorate forests, whether through peaceful protest, re-forestation programmes or internet start-ups. Jessica considers the best ways of re-building the strong, mixed forests that will prove so important in our battle against climate change. Scientists trying to map the Pacific Ocean floor got an unexpected assist from the world's second-largest mammal: fin whales. Václav Kuna made the discovery and joins us with more. And, Luca Yupanqui's debut album "Sounds of the Unborn" was recorded while she was still in the womb. Her parents talk about the process behind the album.
Today music journalist (People, Rolling Stone) and co-host of the Rivals podcast Jordan Runtagh joins me from New York City to finally tackle one of our white whales - The Beach Boys immortal classic ‘Pet Sounds’. Yes, somehow we are in year eight of the show without anyone doing the record. Never fear, we get into it in some detail today, from the background of the record and Brian Wilson’s shift to non-touring creative genius, the intra-family fights between Brian and Mike Love, the contrasts between Pet Sounds and the Beatles' Sgt Pepper, the starkness of the lyrics, the contributions of the Wrecking Crew and Jordan’s experiences interviewing Brian Wilson and how this album helped him connect with his father.
I denne omgang af Live Feed snakker Isa Naja Buhl med programchef for Roskilde Festival Anders Wahrén.

A Marlborough Sounds watchdog group says it's time that Tory Channel was closed to all shipping and an alternative inter-island route put in place before the arrival of the new, larger passenger ferries in 2024. The narrow, rocky gap which passenger ferries ply daily is considered one of New Zealand's most tricky areas to navigate. Guardians of the Sounds says Kiwirail's proposed new ferries will be about 50 metres longer than the current ships, and that will pose problems. Peter Beech told RNZ Nelson-Marlborough reporter Tracy Neal there is an alternative through Queen Charlotte Sound, and they want the ferries to use it. [audio_play] Maritime New Zealand says it's committed to working with all groups to ensure any potential risks are managed.

On this podcast, we'll be showcasing the mouthwatering Tasting Menus from leading cultural and music PR agency WildKat, as well as acclaimed composer, sound artist and performer Drum & Lace whose latest EP "Further" was released last week. WildKat Tasting Menus WildKat's Press Assistant Robert Shone writes: "It is well known that a careful combination of sound and taste can elevate the sensory experience of both parties. Back in 1997, Heston Blumenthal enhanced his fish dish 'Sounds of the Sea' through utilising an iPod of sea soundscapes to create 'sonic seasoning'. We here at WildKat are doing the reverse. Throughout the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, WildKat will be enhancing many virtual classical music experiences with a carefully paired item of food or drink. Every week, our team will create a brand new Menu of 14 livestreams, specially paired with 14 recipes. Each week, a member of the WildKat team will also provide a recommendation of a TV show, book, or a piece of art to help stimulate and inspire during this trying time." To sample these Tasting Menus, please visit wildkatpr.com/news or WildKat PR on socials. Drum & Lace Drum & Lace (also known as Sofia Hultquist) is an Italian-born composer, sound artist and performer that writes and creates music for film and media. Among her impressive credits include fashion documentary "The First Monday in May" (dir Andrew Rossi), the AppleTV+ Original Series "Dickinson" (created by Alena Smith) and season 3 of NBC “Good Girls” (created by Jenna Bans & Bill Krebs). Other notable collaborations include leading brands such as NARS, Always, Tanya Taylor, Girls Who Code, Squarespace, as well as theatre production company Saudade Theatre and contemporary dance company Heidi Duckler Dance. Drum & Lace's performance work often includes sound installation and spatial audio elements, at events such as Moogfest and National Sawdust. Her latest EP "Further" was originally commissioned as a new work for Heidi Duckler Dance that features field recordings, samples from Yellowstone National Park's online archive, electronics and strings performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra. Inspired by Emily Dickinson's poem "Further in Summer than the Birds," an ode to nature, the EP depicts the journey of a bird. I talked to Drum & Lace last week from her home studio in Los Angeles about the creative inspiration, research and compositional processes behind the release, as well as the broader ideas and issues arising from the EP. Most notably, this includes the importance of protecting, listening to and caring for nature, actions that many people having been reflecting on over these last few months. Many thanks to Hannah Goldshlack-Wolf for bringing this fascinating and thought-provoking listen to my attention and arranging this discussion, and to Drum & Lace for taking the time to talk especially for this podcast. This can cause climate alarmists to win arguments about weather and climate that creates property damage and loss of human life. The man-made climate change argument is good for political posturing but revealing high powered plasma operations would not be a topic that would wind up on some mainstream news report. I’m launching my podcast, and this is special to me because it’s the very way I’ve been aching to communicate with you for an age, now. Get a feel for the places we’ll traverse, the tones we’ll explore, the depths we’ll dive into, and the highs at which we’ll soar. But wait, before you do that! I have something fun for you. I went live on Instagram when I recorded this episode in a response to some of your queries about ‘showing up when you’re afraid of being seen.’ The best way to demonstrate what courage looks like, is to demonstrate what courage looks like. My vision of recording this episode in a dark and quiet room all by myself dissolved when I tapped GO LIVE on my iPhone screen. Suddenly, I was introducing a podcast that didn’t even exist yet, in front of a live audience. I announced her name, her vibe and my voice was shaking the entire time. If you want to see the conversation (and the drama) that was wrapped around what ended up being a nicely edited podcast, you can watch the video over at tarabliss.com.au/episode0. I hope it inspires you to get started on your heart’s work. Tune into this introductory episode for: Voice wobbles and shaking hands as this podcast emerges A little of my story -- the dots that have connected to bring this podcast to life The power of blogging, writing, speaking, publishing to just two people The essence and personality of Sounds Like Bliss The two creatives that put a rocket up this process and made me move on it What I’m interested (and not interested) in exploring in this space with you

___________________________ DERRY DENATURED Using unconventional recording techniques and studio trickery certain qualities within the Derry soundscape have been highlighted, exaggerated or distorted into something unusual and unexpected – obscuring what was once recognisable and enabling radio listeners to hear the city in a new light. Taking the everyday sounds of the city as a starting point, a series of field recordings selected for their ambiguous qualities were played back to Derry residents; the sounds became increasingly distorted as the sequence progressed. The ambiguity was heightened through a variety of unusual recording processes including extreme close-ups, electromagnetic induction, ultrasound, binaural stereo, hydrophone and contact mic recordings. Additionally, digital processing techniques were used to further ‘denature’ these once familiar sounds. Participants were asked to identify, describe and imitate each sound. The resulting 'sound descriptions' were in turn used as briefs to create artificial or exaggerated sounds matching the qualities described by subjects. In the final work, the natural and unnatural sounds of Derry are intermingled in a long form radiophonic sound composition that meanders through the city accompanied by insights and analysis of the sound environment by the people who inhabit it. Featuring the voices: of Sarah Barr, Fiona Burke, Eamonn Brown, Amanda Doherty, Charlene Smith and Marta. Commissioned by the Jerwood Foundation for Resonance FM's ‘Derry City of Culture 2013’ radio residency broadcasts in association with VOID gallery. Mark Vernon is a sound artist and radio producer based in Glasgow, Scotland. He has produced programmes internationally for stations including Resonance FM, VPRO, CKUT, Sound Art Radio, Kunstradio, Wavefarm, RADIA and the BBC. He has also been directly involved in the creation of several UK art radio stations including: Radiophrenia, Hairwaves, Radio Tuesday and Nowhere Island Radio. He records and performs in a number of music projects including Vernon & Burns (Gagarin, Staalplaat, Ultra Eczema), Hassle Hound (Staubgold, Textile, Pickled Egg) and A Small Party of Pressure (Firstfold). His solo albums include: 'Static Cinema' (Entr'acte 2012), 'Sounds of the Modern Hospital' (meagre resource 2014) and 'Things That Were Missed in the Clamour for Calm' (3Leaves 2015).

Things That Were Missed In The Clamour For Calm - Framework Edit est une oeuvre qui a parcourue les continents. Yes, we have two 'th sounds,' /θ,/ and /ð/and they are both very important.
A bit of 90s drum & bass I worked on with the band Phonic which was myself & Alex Lennon. I think this was recorded around 1997. This demo attracted attention from the management of LeftField & label Higher Ground (a version appears on the compilation 'Sounds of the Irish Underground' ) Like most things in life it didn't quite work out, but it's nice to hear this track so many years later. Pretty happy with the drum programming if not the whole track considering the basic set-up it was made on.
