This week, we're reposting two awesome interviews with authors who were just nominated for the Hugo Award. Today's guest is Donald Oghenechovwe Ekpeki, a speculative fiction author from Nigeria, whose story 'O2 Arena' is nominated for both the Hugo and the Nebula. He has been awarded an honorable mention in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest, twice. His short story “The Witching Hour,” won the 2018 Nommo award for best short story by an African. He was longlisted for the 2019 Nommo award and the 2020 British Science Fiction Association award. He was also awarded the 2020 Horror Writers Association diversity grant and was nominated for best novella by the Nebula Awards. I usually don't give you a list of a guest's accomplishments, but in this case it is relevant. We've talked in this podcasts with guests about the way the American and British SF&F world keeps out authors from other countries, about how so much SF&F gets lost by never being noticed in the world, and I guess you know that there is a lot of inherent racism towards Africans. But whatever we know, whatever we assume, Donald shows us in this interview today many of the ways that African writers are cut off from the rest of the world, from self-publishing, from the big publishers, and more. You can find Donald on: Website: odekpeki.com/ Twitter: Twitter.com/@penprince_ Also check out the books he edited that we talked about: 'The Year's Best African Speculative Fiction (2021)' and 'Dominion'. Here's the thing, my friend, this one has deep roots and can wreak way more havoc than realized. Tune in to hear ways to let go of people-pleasing so that you can bring greater alignment, kindness, and healthy boundaries into your life. I share some of my personal struggles and learnings that I hope help you to make shifts and changes for your highest good. As always, take what you like and leave the rest.  The Question To Ask Yourself I have learned that one of my most stealth coping mechanisms since I was a little girl was to make sure I was doing, saying, and acting in a way that would make you happy and feel good. This kind of works-until it doesn't. In addition to it being a highly co-dependent way of being, it blocks you from being your You-est You because this people-pleasing behavior pushes you away from the core parts of you. The question to ask yourself that will help you feel into what you truly desire and align with is 'Is this true for me?' I want to give a huge shout-out to Rev. Frances Fayden (who has been on my podcast twice) for helping me to see this was missing in my own life. This question should be the new compass for all of us recovering people pleasers. After asking yourself this question, you need to get quiet, pause, and feel with your body wisdom what is true for you. Taking on this practice will allow you to build trust, faith, and confidence in your own inner knowing and body wisdom.   The power of 'No, thank you.' If you've read this far, I'm thinking we're cut from the same cloth. Saying no has probably been one of the hardest words to say out loud. I remember reading Shonda Rhimes' bestselling book, 'The Year of Yes,' and thought...I do not need a year of saying yes; I need a year of saying NO! I recently interviewed the lovely Kate Northrup, who talked about the power of saying no and doing less. Saying no is not going to feel normal and may be weird at first. At least it didn't feel normal for me. I have learned through tapping into my body wisdom, after asking myself a question about something I'm wavering on, that if I listen and get still, I will have my answer. Most recently, I heard the answer from within, and it was, 'No, thank you.' You can, of course, just say no, as 'no' is a full sentence in itself. I like adding the 'thank you' as it adds an element of appreciation, gratitude, and thanks. For me, this will be the year of no, thank you—such a beautiful way to set boundaries for anyone struggling with people-pleasing.   Kindness to yourself Ok, so I know our type - we try to be kind to everyone, often missing the most important person to show true kindness to -- ourselves. In addition to asking yourself, 'Is this true for me,' start incorporating the question, 'Is this kind to me?' Or better said, 'Am I being kind to myself right now?' As we know that all of our outer world reflects our inner world, it's time to start bringing the qualities we want to see 'out there' like radical kindness, compassion, and integrity, to our inner world. This week's ongoing conversation between two friends begins with David and Stephanie discussing their exhaustion with current politics, and how the early voting has finally begun as the political season  draws to a close. The look back is to 1978, the start of video games, and an early version of personal computers. It was the year of Jim Jones and his cult in Guyana and the year that Saturday Night Fever dominated the box office and the music scene with the Bee Gees soundtrack. They both agree that the song of the year was Lionel Richie's Commodores with "Three Times A Lady". This week David reflects on the different perception of time from when back in Junior High School, time seemed to take forever and how today refilling his two week pill box seems to happen every day. They both agree that one childhood year feels like ten adult years. Stephanie concludes with a  discussion of her lifelong love of little things that fit in the palm of her open hand from childhood right through today.

Today's provocative conversation weaves a thread between current events from the philanthropy of European football star Satio Monet, back to the year 1965's musical influences and political turbulence, including a journey to David's childhood summers in a bungalow colony in New York's Catskill Mountains, and Steph's teen aged crush on The Beatles and The Monkees. And we finish with a discussion of a recent Supreme Court decision, and  the definition of "right to life". ----more---- [00:01:27] And here's what he says about the millions and millions of them dollars that he's making every year. This touched me so much. Why would I want 10 Ferrari's, 20 diamond watches or two planes? What will these objects do for me and for the world? I was hungry and I had to work in the fields. I survived hard times, played football, barefooted. [00:01:50] I did not have an education and many other things, but today with what I earn with football, I can help my people. So he has [00:02:00] built schools. He's built.  he provides clothes, [00:02:03] shoes, food to people from Senegal who are in extreme poverty. And he's just my hero this week. Manet, that's his last name and what.   [00:06:02] You go ahead and set the stage. Cause you were the older one in 1965. I was only 13. [00:06:08] David: [00:06:08] I get it. Did you have to tell everybody? [00:06:11] Stephanie: [00:06:11] I wanted everybody to know. [00:06:14] David: [00:06:14] All right. Okay. So that part's out. okay. So little things. so new house, 13,500. 1965. It went up because if you remember, when we did an earlier year, it was something like 1800 or 2000 or something. a new car, 2,600 and rent $118. And, they should bring that back. Okay. So significant events. [00:06:42]I'm seeing that the Watts riots happened, that was LA right. [00:06:47] Stephanie: [00:06:47] That was [00:06:48] David: [00:06:48] were you living there at the time? In [00:06:50]Stephanie: [00:06:50] no, I wasn't in Los Angeles until 1969. [00:06:54] David: [00:06:54] Okay. All right. the next one is interesting. It was the Northeast blackout, [00:07:00] . And interesting enough, we had triple sessions in our high school and we were seniors when we were seniors. Juniors. I couldn't even remember what I wasn't 65 15. What are you at 15? [00:07:14]Stephanie: [00:07:14] be a sophomore [00:07:14] David: [00:07:14] sophomore. Well, our school was a regular school building and I think I was on the fifth floor and out the windows back then you could see the empire state building. and I remember sitting in class and you didn't realize it. The light started dimming and dimming. And Dimming. And then the empire state building started dimming and yes, it was such a slow,  processed before it just went black. [00:07:40] it was, you didn't know really what was happening, but once it went black, everybody left school, we were in the streets directing traffic, and it was one of those extraordinary nights of the blackout. And of course all the conspiracy theories and. Alright, do you know happen? You know, if it happened today, it would be [00:08:00] even worse. [00:08:00] Okay. So we had the blackout. Let's see what else I found, st. Louis, Missouri built the gateway arch. Pretty famous. Now, let me look, let me look. Let me look. Oh, now the cultural part, of course, I'm always attracted to that. Doctor. Zhivago was the big movie. And let's see, I'm just curious, who was topping the chart? [00:08:22] Oh yeah. [00:08:24] Stephanie: [00:08:24] I loved the clothes in it. I want it to be like, you know, Natasha and the big fur hat and the fur trimmed stuff. And, Oh, I don't know if her name was Natasha or not, but I remember loving the costumes in that film. [00:08:37] David: [00:08:37] okay. Popular musicians. Number one would be an easy one. I think. The Beatles, of course, the rolling stones, number two, of course, Freddie and the dreamers, the animals love the animals, you know, the kinks. We're popular then I think the kinks of the most underrated [00:09:00] group, their lyrics are spectacular. [00:09:02] They were spectacular musicians. In fact, when I was living in London, my mentor Ned Sherrin had written a script for the kinks that we were going to direct, but never came together anyway. So I think that's a, that's the year event. your recollections. [00:09:21] Stephanie: [00:09:21] Well in 1965, I was 13 years old. I was very curious about making out and I was in love with the Beatles. And I [00:09:32] David: [00:09:32] Paul if I remember. [00:09:34] Stephanie: [00:09:34] well, Paul definitely, but I really, I would have taken any of them if they had shown interest. [00:09:40] David: [00:09:40] Not discriminate. It's okay.

Why 2020 Is 'The Year of HR': A Conversation with Josh Bersin

Humans Not Resources

Perhaps now more than any other time in History, demands on People Operations roles are incredibly high. Handling just the administrative side of HR while establishing a remote workforce can be a full-time job, let alone the all-important human element that requires your resources and attention. Because the true power of human resources lies in unlocking the potential of every employee, many HR leaders are discovering or refining new skills in 2020: “The Year of HR.”  Josh Bersin founded Bersin & Associates in 2001 (later acquired by Deloitte) to provide research and advisory services focused on corporate learning. He expanded the company’s coverage to encompass HR, talent management, talent acquisition, and leadership and became a recognized expert in the talent market. In 2019, Josh also founded the Josh Bersin Academy, an online professional development resource that has become the “Home for HR” in recent months. Right now, in addition to staying in business during an economic downturn, companies are struggling to meet the demands of a workforce coping with a rapidly evolving world. Dealing with a global pandemic and escalating conversations about race and inclusion, every company must ask itself what type of citizenship they want to practice. This begins with how they treat their people, and then echoes out into the marketplace and beyond. HR has an ongoing role to play in aligning the mission of the company with the mission of its people—this not only determines how employees perform but what kind of citizen the company will be.  In 2020, companies are working proactively to create a sense of stability and safety for people, Josh sees the role of HR expanding more and more to fill this need. How have you seen the role of HR evolve in your company? Let us know in the comments on the episode page!   In this episode How current trends in HR are leading to more workplace creativity Creating values alignment between companies and their employees The economic factors that actually matter right now How companies can provide stability for their people in unstable times What companies can do to promote equity in the workplace and society   Quotes “Companies exist in a world of societal issues. Every employee and every customer has a perspective on the role they want to play in society.” [9:21] “It always pays off to think more about your role in society. It seems to always make the company more successful.” [18:39] “I think DNI is a critically important program, but I hope it isn’t getting in the way of the real issue of pay transparency, pay fairness, and talking about these issues so people can share their fears and concerns.” [24:46] “2020 is the year of HR in every single company. We are being asked to take on heroic roles…. Steve Glenn, CEO of Plant Prefab and LivingHomes (right here in Santa Monica!) drops by the podcast to discuss factory-built modular homes and why he started a tech company instead of following his childhood dream to become an architect. Prefab is unique in its ability to shorten the timeline for many building projects, including custom single-family homes, multi-family, and affordable housing. We also talk about other benefits of prefab, including reduced waste, lower labor costs and increased quality control. Episode Sponsor - www.sustainablehomesofthefuture.comContact Host - info@shfbuild.com Steve Glenn is the founder and CEO of Plant Prefab, the first prefabricated home factory in the nation dedicated to sustainable construction, materials, processes, and operations. All Plant projects are prefabricated in the company’s 62,000-square-foot home factory in Rialto, CA, with a patented building system that reduces build time by at least 50% over traditional construction while minimizing construction’s negative impact the environment. Plant was born out of LivingHomes, the award-winning design agency Glenn founded in 2006 that now serves as Plant’s in-house studio. Glenn’s ultimate goal is to define a new standard in residential home design and construction, helping individuals, architects, and developers alike efficiently design and build high-quality, cost-efficient, healthy homes. Glenn holds two patents and his company’s work has garnered many of the industry’s top honors, including the AIA Top Sustainable Award and the Sustainable Quality Awards Grand Prize. Twenty-seven LivingHomes have been certified LEED Platinum and five more LEED Gold, making the company one of the most experienced designers of homes at the highest level of LEED certification. The company has also received other awards including Architizer’s Jury andPeople Choice Awards, Green Builder Magazine’s “Home of theYear,” Business Week’s “Architectural Wonders of the World,” and Steve has been deemed Clean Tech “CEO of the Year,” “Environmental Entrepreneur of the Year” by LA City Council/Faith2Green, and Huffington Post “Greatest Person of the Day.” Steve also sees prefab building as the solution to the country’s affordable housing crisis. Plant built seven single-family, LEED Platinum certified homes in LA’s Atwater Village and has also built homes for the Make It Right Foundation in New Orleans and the Ft. Peck Indian Reservation in Montana. A recent collaboration with Brooks + Scarpa Architects was chosen as a winner in the LA County Housing Innovation Challenge, seeking scalable housing projects to address the county’s homeless population. Before LivingHomes and Plant Prefab, Glenn was founder and CEO of PeopleLink, a leading provider of enterprise e-community solutions; founding partner of idealab, a business incubation firm that raised and invested $1 billion in a number of successful companies; co-director of the Virtual Reality Studio at Walt Disney Imagineering; and co-founder of Clearview Software, which was sold to Apple Computer in 1988. Glenn is also a co-founder and chair of the Sustainable Business Council, co-founder of the Kaia Parker Dance Endowment, and a co-founder and former board member of Hope Street Group and the Brown University Entrepreneur Forum. Glenn holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Brown University, studied Urban Planning at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and was a Coro Fellow.  Show Notes:Nest Project w/ Brooks + Scarpa - https://www.plantprefab.com/models/brooks+scarpa-nest-livinghome-toolkit
