Fr. Mike continues reading from the book of Nehemiah as we read of the many attempts to prevent Nehemiah from doing the great work of God. We also see the events that lead to Esther being chosen as queen and the goodness she will bring even in the midst of a broken system. Today's readings are Nehemiah 6-7, Esther 1-2, and Proverbs 21:1-4. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Superstition, idolatry, divination, and magic are all things we can encounter in our daily lives, and, with Fr. Mike, we unpack how they break the first commandment. Fr. Mike reiterates that superstition represents an “excess of religion” and can affect the worship we offer to God. He points out that we can be superstitious even in our Catholic practices. He also explains that idolatry consists of divinizing anything that is not God. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2110-2117. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the anchoress and mystic who, in the late fourteenth century, wrote about her visions of Christ suffering, in a work since known as Revelations of Divine Love. She is probably the first named woman writer in English, even if questions about her name and life remain open. Her account is an exploration of the meaning of her visions and is vivid and bold, both in its imagery and theology. From her confined cell in a Norwich parish church, in a land beset with plague, she dealt with the nature of sin and with the feminine side of God, and shared the message she received that God is love and, famously, that all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well. Jesus wasn’t the only one who walked on water. Remember? For a few moments, the Apostle Peter walked on water when Jesus bid him, “come to me.” But when his faith turned to fear, his feet didn’t float! Well today on A NEW BEGINNING, Pastor Greg Laurie points out how we can keep our faith above water, and let fear sink to the bottom. Humanism promises freedom but delivers the same rebellion mankind has repeated since the Garden of Eden. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar discuss how humanism, at its core, is an attempt to reach heaven without God. Oscar shares from his own past as an atheist, explaining how he eventually realized that humanists place hope in human potential while ignoring the Creator. They often rely on technology to end suffering or build a better future, but without an objective moral standard, this vision drifts. Values like equality, justice, and human dignity are rooted in Christianity, yet they are also borrowed and redefined apart from God. When His authority is removed, everything shifts.Ray and E.Z. demonstrate human nature with a simple experiment involving a wallet left out to see what people would do. Their conversation with the man who tried to steal it revealed how quickly morality bends to convenience. Humanism attempts to argue that man is insignificant by claiming the universe shows our smallness, while simultaneously elevating humanity as the solution to all problems. This contradiction shows that it is not about replacing belief with logic, but rather believing in oneself. The guys remind listeners that history proves against humanism: every attempt to build utopia without God ends in destruction. If money is your god, it's never enough. Even noble ideals fall apart when disconnected from God's truth.Even conservatism, when separated from Christ, can slip into humanism by trusting in policies or political victories rather than God's Word. Believers must stay alert, examining their hearts and watching for subtle ways pride can undermine their faith and dethrone God. Parents, in particular, are encouraged to intentionally disciple their children. Family devotions and honest conversations help equip kids with a biblical worldview before the world teaches them something else. The same principle applies in evangelism: build rapport, share the gospel clearly, and love others with joy.The guys wrap up with encouragement. Before Christ, many believers were humanists at heart, but surrendering to Him brings true freedom. Humanism continues to grow like a false religion, always promoting the power of man, yet Scripture provides the only firm foundation. The solution is to stay rooted in God's Word, reflect on how we spend our days, and intentionally disciple our families. When life is anchored in Christ, there is no wrong place or wrong time. Instead, we can have confidence that He reigns over all, and in Him, we find the security and joy that humanism can never provide.Send us a textThanks for listening! Episode 150: 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C In today's episode, our main focus will be on the second reading for this upcoming 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C, taken from 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14. There are couple of details that we will focus one. One relates to the topic of Apostolic Succession. The other relates to Sacred Tradition. The Gospel reading, taken from Luke 17:5-10, does provide us a detail worthy reflecting on, but it is not apologetical in nature even though it can help us in our apologetics ministry. Hey everyone, Welcome to The Sunday Catholic Word, a podcast where we reflect on the upcoming Sunday Mass readings and pick out the details that are relevant for explaining and defending our Catholic faith. I'm Dr. Karlo Broussard, staff apologist and speaker for Catholic Answers, and the host for this podcast. In today's episode, our main focus will be on the second reading for this upcoming 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C, taken from 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14. Here’s the second reading, 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14. Paul writes, Beloved: I remind you, to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. The first detail that I want to highlight is Paul's statement, “the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands.” There's a considerable amount of debate surrounding this passage as it relates to Apostolic Succession. And that's what I'd like to focus on. For some Catholics, this passage is clear-cut evidence for Apostolic Succession—the idea that the apostles ordained others to succeed them in the apostolic ministry. Paul speaks of a “gift” given to Timothy, which would seem to be a reference to the indelible mark that's given in priestly ordination. Paul also says that this gift was given through “the imposition of hands,” which would also fit with the Catholic understanding of priestly ordination. So what should we make of this interpretation? Well, let's first take the appeal to the “gift.” I don't think this refers specifically to the character or mark that's given in priestly ordination. The reason is that such a character, in the words of R. J. Foster in A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, “would have no need of being revived and is incapable of diminution or decline” (pg. 1148). Rather, it seems to be a reference to what theologians call “the grace of a calling,” actual graces that a minister has access to for the sake of fulfilling the duties that the office requires. Foster argues this is evidenced by Paul adding, “For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” Now, this doesn't mean this is not a reference to priestly ordination, since “the grace of a calling” comes with the priestly ordination. And that it is a reference to Timothy's priestly ordination is strongly supported by this “gift” being given through the “imposition of hands.” We have to be careful, however, with our appeal to the imposition of hands. The “laying on of hands” has multiple meanings in the Bible. Curtis Mitch and Scott Hahn give a nice list in their Ignatius Catholic Study Bible: It's a gesture used to perform healings (Mark 16:18), confer bles

Fear and anxiety can feel overwhelming, especially in seasons when uncertainty presses in. As our daily prayer and devotional remind us, the psalmist reminds us that God is not distant or indifferent—He is our shield, our refuge, and our covering. Amanda shares a personal story of repeating the phrase “God protects me like a shield” in a dark, fearful moment. That simple truth became a lifeline when fear threatened to take over. Psalm 91:4 gives us a powerful picture of God’s nearness—like a parent bird sheltering its young beneath protective wings, our Father covers us in His love and strength. Romans 8:31 affirms this reality: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” When we face anxiety, fear, or uncertainty, we can lean into the truth that God’s presence is bigger than the darkness. His protection extends over our families, our homes, our work, and our hearts. No matter what storms surround us, we are never unprotected. God’s shield is not fragile—it is steadfast, faithful, and unshakable. Today's Bible Reading: "He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler." – Psalm 91:4 (ESV) Key Takeaways God is our shield and refuge, covering us in His protection (Psalm 91:4). Fear may whisper that we are alone, but God’s Word declares that His presence surrounds us. Romans 8:31 reminds us that nothing can ultimately prevail against those who belong to Him. When anxiety rises, we can replace fearful thoughts with the truth of Scripture. Let’s Pray Together Dear Lord, thank You for covering me with Your protective shield. When fear threatens to overwhelm me, remind me that You are with me, that Your love and faithfulness are stronger than any darkness. Guard my family, my heart, and my mind. Replace my anxious thoughts with Your peace, and let my life bring glory to Your name. Amen. As it was in the Garden of Eden, where the serpent changed the biological makeup of God's creation, so it goes again with the Fallen Ones using mad science to create an abomination on Earth. Genomic technologies are driving a vast expansion in digitalized data, from gene sequences and entire genomes that link genes to specific functions and other types of metadata for humans, other animals, plants, and microbes. A prime example includes the development of customized bioweapons. America's adversaries can direct biological attacks, specifically at US livestock and crops, to create a food security crisis. Another way is for the harvesting and pirating of DNA for racial targeting. Humanity is at a crossroads. It has to avoid both biotechnological calamity and the reign of the Antichrist. This movie made us all realize that immortality wasn't all it is cracked up to be. So grab your shovel, grab a can of spray paint, and for God's sake, moisturize—because immortality looks exhausting. This week, we’ll hear from three seasoned leaders from Cedarville University—Dr. Michael Sherr, Dr. Jason Lee, and Dr. Angelia Mickle—who bring together decades of experience in social work, theology, and nursing. United by a shared passion for equipping healthcare professionals, they explore how we can find renewed strength under tremendous pressures by bridging the gap between faith and health. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Dr. Drew Dickens, a technologist and storyteller exploring where faith, identity, and innovation meet. As host of the Encountering Peace and AI and Spirituality podcasts, he brings deep insight into how emerging technology is reshaping the way we think, connect, and seek meaning. But also a sense of longevity, because all these things are done not just in the moment and for immediate success or healing or any treatment, but ultimately for the glory of God.” - Dr. Jason Lee “The purpose of us being here is to comfort people and to help them in their time of vulnerability, or if they’re hurt and suffering, and just love them unconditionally—the way that Jesus would.” - Angelia Mickle “If we have Jesus in our heart, the joy is going to show. Jesus is love, and we’re going to reflect Christ, so we’re going to reflect love.” - Dr. Angelia Mickle “[AI] is still casually dismissed right now, and that’s concerning to me because we’re dealing with issues of identity, we’re dealing with issues of inspiration.” - Dr. Drew Dickens “Prayer requires effort, and we need to remember that communicating with the Creator and Sustainer of this vast universe is an amazing privilege.” - Dr. Drew Dickens “We need to have these conversations on the effects of [AI] in the pews, on families and relationships—the effects it’s going to have on community, on communion, on what it means to gather together, or just to re-engage with a physical moment of intimacy with God.” - Dr. Drew Dickens “We’re not to be a people of fear, but of hope. So we can be intentional, we can find ways to engage with AI in a redemptive way, and we can be mindful of these opportunities because there is hope.” - Dr. Drew Dickens ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Paul urges Timothy to be aware of this and to remain grounded in the truth of God as a faithful servant of Jesus Christ. Paul emphasizes that while physical training has some value, godliness holds value for all things, both in this life and the next. He encourages Timothy to set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, despite his youth. Paul instructs him not to neglect the spiritual gift given to him, but to devote himself fully to the work of ministry. By doing so, he will grow in maturity and help lead others to salvation. The chapter calls all believers to stay alert, pursue godliness, and stay faithful to sound teaching. We live in a time when truth is often distorted, so we must stay anchored in what God has spoken. Paul reminds us that growing in godliness is not automatic; it requires discipline, intention, and a heart that seeks to honor God. We may feel overlooked because of our age or inexperience, but God calls us to be examples right where we are. Our words, our habits, and our love should all reflect Jesus. We each have gifts, and we must not ignore them. When we commit to spiritual growth, others are strengthened by our faithfulness. Let us take this charge seriously and live in a way that draws others toward truth, leading them to the salvation of their souls. Present God, we hear Your call to grow in godliness. Please help us avoid the distractions of teachings that are not from You. We ask for focus when we feel distracted, and for strength when we feel tired or unseen. Help us to take our faith seriously, not just in public, but always. Teach us to lead with our lives, not just our words. We want to be examples of love, purity, and faith. Remind us that our age or position does not limit what You can do through us. We are Yours. Use us to share Your message of salvation. Thought Questions: What are the deceitful doctrines noted in this chapter? How do you protect yourself from such restrictions and live in the liberty of Christ? How do you “discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness”? Why is it important to fix your hope on Jesus as you do so? What did Paul tell Timothy to focus on to keep others from looking down on him? Which of those are you working on in your life presently?
How can you recognize a false prophet? What's the role of God's prophets? How does Elisha point to Jesus? Jase confesses that a single word in a church service had him mentally checked out, but his distraction sparks a bigger conversation about what's happening in churches today. The guys marvel at the surprising revival that has young people pouring back into humble, overflowing gatherings while ornate cathedrals sit empty. They dive into verses in John where Jesus breathes peace and new-creation life into his followers before sending them out to their mission fields. The guys agree that true revival isn't about where you worship but who you worship, and the Spirit is stirring hearts back to Jesus. It's Witness Wednesday! Join Todd at Kennesaw State University as he discusses truth, the afterlife, postmodernism, and the exclusivity of Christ with two college students. Segment 1 • Student Brittany says she makes her own rules and believes in evolution, reincarnation, and positive energy. • Todd walks her through the need for an objective standard of right and wrong. • He introduces God as a loving, just Creator whose laws reveal everyone's guilt. Segment 2 • Todd shifts to a “cosmic courtroom” illustration, showing Brittany God's perfect justice. • She admits she'd be guilty under God's laws but hopes He'd “understand” human mistakes. • Todd explains why Jesus' death satisfies God's justice and saves sinners. Segment 3 • Erin studies sociology and blends Christianity with reincarnation-type thinking. • Todd challenges her postmodern thinking—truth isn't personal, it's either true or false. • Todd reasons that creation points to a Creator and presses her on who Jesus really is. Segment 4 • Erin shares she was baptized in 2020 but struggles with drifting from God in college. • Todd clarifies the difference between justification and sanctification. • He encourages her to rest in God's love and let that motivate obedience instead of guilt. ___ Thanks for listening! You probably have no idea what really happened when Christians in Peru stood up against George Soros's agenda. My guest, Christian Rosas, was at the center of it, leading a movement so disruptive that even Soros had to back away. The real question is, how can ordinary believers like you push back against powers that seem too big to fight? Today, Christian and I break down how it was done in Peru and show you how these same strategies can give you confidence to stand strong where God has placed you. How do we reconcile our expectations with God's unfolding plan? In this episode, Professor Derek Sainsbury explores the remarkable life of Nancy Naomi Tracy–a woman whose unwavering faith and bold defense of religious liberty and temple service helped shape the early Latter-day Saint experience. Through persecution, political exile, and personal loss, Nancy remained devoted to the gospel. Professor Sainsbury draws from her writings and activism to reveal how she navigated the tension between personal hopes and divine direction, offering a compelling lens into the cost of conviction and the legacy of spiritual resilience. Hope is rooted in God. Yet in this world we have a mission to pursue for Kingdom. What is your mission? Understanding our mission gives us focus and the understanding of victory. Even in loss, we learn about victory. The outcomes of our mission bring us closer to God and the hope he offers. Know your mission. For almost two years, Israel has had to defend their people, land, and right to exist against an organization created to destroy them. When Hamas first attacked Israel there were mixed reactions around the globe. Avner Boskey, Israeli pastor and author, joins host Casey Harper to discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict and where Christians should stand on the issue. The two unpack the influence and impact of Qatar and Turkey, what is the meaning behind the phrase "God's chosen people", and a practical application to what Scripture says on the topic of Israel.
