Starting a service business on the side is one of the fastest ways to build extra income. It's flexible, low-overhead, and you can probably start with skills you already have. “I had a lot of drive underneath me," Abbey Ashley told me, about starting her service business back in 2013. "I was super pregnant and I hated my job so much,” Abbey started offering her services as a virtual assistant, and connected with her first clients at local networking events in Washington, DC. My the time her maternity leave was up--just a few short months--Abbey had booked enough work to not have to go back to that job she hated. On top of that, she only had to work 20 hours a week to do it, and could work from home. There are almost no barriers to entry to starting a freelance service business, and the startup costs are minimal. (All Abbey did was make business cards for networking.) In fact, it was a service business, a house painting business in my case, that was one of my first entrepreneurial adventures. Over time, Abbey scaled her virtual assistant business from just herself at $20-30 an hour, to her own little virtual agency, to $75 an hour and up for some specialized work. Torn between parenthood and a successful career? Not anymore! Tune in to how you can have it all and live your life while building a truly fulfilling career. Episode Introduction: If you're a business owner who often finds yourself overwhelmed, this episode is for you. Our guest today, Abbey Ashley talks about the benefits and importance of outsourcing work to create a work-life balance. She also shares the best practices to outsource work, even if it's your first time. Episode Summary: Abbey Ashley walks us through her journey of starting her business as a Virtual Assistant who was looking to do something to kill time and make some extra cash to now owning The Virtual Savvy, a brand that has taught thousands of virtual assistants how to run a successful online business. She shares her challenges, how she overcame them, how she grew her own team, why outsourcing is important, and also some super effective tips to do so starting today. Main Takeaways: When work starts to feel overwhelming and consumes your thoughts, sit with a journal to write down all about it. Just putting actual words to your feelings will help a great deal. Challenges are an indicator of growth so they'll always be there. The important thing is for you to become someone who's comfortable with facing their fears at different levels in life. Outsourcing can be really scary for multiple reasons but make sure you make an intentional effort to delegate work when you can and focus on your zone of genius. If delegation is difficult for you, start by outsourcing a one-time project to get in the practice of someone else taking over a task. How to outsource effectively: Start by outsourcing to tools first. Take a look at your outsourcing budget (after paying yourself first). Make a list of the tasks that you need to outsource. Find a VA that aligns with your brand and cultural values. Always choose action over perfection. Have you been thinking about doing something just for you? Today we have multi million dollar online course creator Abbey Ashley on the show. Abbey shares with us that her dream was always to be a stay at home mom until she realized that she wasn't really good at some of the stay at home mom things! It occurred to her too that she was bored and needed something else just for her and also wanted to contribute financially. I know many moms out there might be finding more time on their hands as their kids are older and you too might be wanting something to fill your time that gives you a creative outlet or makes you use your brain in a different way. Abbey talks about her success not happening over night and the hard lessons she learned to get where she is today. One topic that stood out to me is that by asking her audience what they needed vs. just doing what she thought they needed is what made her wildly successful. Hear what she has to say about this topic and more on the podcast. If you liked this episode make sure to check out the episode I did on living a life too small for you. Emma here and I am soooo excited to share this bonus episode with you all today! You can listen to my interview with Abbey Ashley, founder of The Virtual Savvy. Abbey shares with me the story of how she changed her career (and life!) when she taught herself to become a Virtual Assistant, making it possible for her to work from home with her children. She grew that business but then eventually started teaching others how they too could own their own business and become a VA and have the freedom to work from home, or work remote, just like she had found. Welcome back to another episode of the podcast. This week I am joined by the lovely Meridith McCarty. Meridith is the owner of McCarty Virtual Services, a full service virtual assistant agency and outsourcing expert. She has been working one-on-one with business owners for the past two years on how to most efficiently outsource work to a virtual assistant to maximize revenue and minimize costs and time consuming tasks. Meridith was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa (yes, another Iowan!) and after many moves for her husband Alex's career, she currently is residing outside of Baltimore, Maryland. After their third move in four years, she decided to create the lifestyle she desired and used all of her experience that she had gained in the corporate world to begin her own virtual assistant company, thus McCarty Virtual Services was born. I originally met Meridith at the She Did It Her Way Summit a few years back. She reached out to me, connecting as fellow Iowans and over our mutual work we do with coaches. Her husband's career had them moving every 1.5-2 years. This meant figuring out a new 9-5 with every move, which was less than ideal for growing her career because every time she got started, she had to stop again. She realized that she couldn’t keep doing what she was doing and knowing she was never meant to be in a 9-5, Meridith began looking into remote jobs she could do from home when they landed in Newport, RI in 2018. She discovered the world of virtual assistance and she dove all-in deciding that is what she was going to do. She committed to it and never looked back. What makes Meridith’s journey so amazing is that she never gave herself a ‘plan B’, she was simply determined to make this work. She put all her eggs and this one basket and decided she was going to whatever it took. With this mindset, Meridith set herself up for massive success, though she didn’t know it quite yet. One of the first things Meridith did was take Abbey Ashley’s (a past She Did It Her Way Summit speaker!) course, and with this course along with her own experience and knowledge she was able to dive right in, get uncomfortable, and start her business. She assumed her business would slowly, but steadily grow, but what happened was the exact opposite. She experienced growth almost immediately and had to quickly hire a VA to help her out on the back end of her own business. She was not prepared at all for this, despite being a VA herself and knowing what should be done.As a result, Meridith decided to pivot her business, consulting business owners on how to outsource work to VA’s. She shows them how to determine what to outsource, how to set themselves and their VA’s up for success, and grow their business with a VA in a positive way. Here are few of Meridith’s key recommendations for before you start looking to outsource:Download LoomRecord yourself doing routine tasks, step by stepCreate a place (whether in Drive or a project management tool) as a training library to store these instructional videosIn this space, also put all of the information a VA would need to be successful (your headshot, bio, SOP’s, your working schedule, etc.)Her business continued to grow, much quicker than she had anticipated thanks to a referral program she had put into place, and she decided it was time to continue to grow her team. Her big initiative in 2021 is to get out of actually doing any client fulfillment herself. She has set herself up to be so close to achieving this and now they just need to make that final pivot, as a team. Meridith lives by the saying,“Do what you love, and the money will follow.”Are you a VA looking to go the extra mile on your applications? Meridith likes to use video submissions in her job opp’s. It shows that the applicant is willing to go the extra mile. This also raises your chances of you being remembered because it dramatically cuts down on the number of applicants for a position, in her experience. There are definitely moments where as business owners we think that the virtual assistants and people that work for us can read our mind. Obviously, this is just not the case and it really trains you to be super explicit, crystal clear, and over communicate what it is that you want done. “It also really requires you to recognize that hiring someone is like it is an investment, you spend more time and energy upfront.”We all have those times that we have failed, we have all been there and hired wrong. You learn by your failures and how you are going to ‘do it next time’. Massive action produces massive results. That's how the business grows and that's how we grow.As she has grown, so has her family. Meridith now has a beautiful baby who she loves to spend time engaging with. This makes it especially important for her to be able to focus her time when her baby is awake on her baby and when the baby is asleep, on her business. Learning to balance and keep doing the things she loves in her business is what keeps her fueled and fully present for both her family and her business.Want to connect with Meridith? You can connect with her on Instagram and also find her hanging out on Clubhouse (McCartyVA). You can find out more about her agency via her website as well.Until next time, keep doing it your way! Insights:“It's important to recognize and understand that your leap journey and transition is going to be different from one person to the next.”“If you can learn from someone and go straight to the source, it's going to save you so much time and energy, and it's going to allow you to accelerate your growth.”“The key is to take care of the people who are already there because by doing so that will attract and bring more people in.”“The better that you lay the expectation, the more stringent you are about the qualifying and hiring process, like the less work you're going to do on the back end, and they're going to make your life easier when it comes to that.” Resources:Meredith McCartyPrivate VA Outsourcing Facebook CommunityFollow Meridith on InstagramOn Clubhouse as ‘McCartyVA’Girl Wash Your Face, by Rachel HollisSDH 240: How To Determine Which Social Media Outlet That’s Right For Your Business with Rachel HollisYou Are A Badass by Jen SinceroSDH 188: Following Your Fears and Feeling All The Feels with Jen SinceroAbbey AshleyAsanaTeamworkGoogle DriveDubsadoLoom

Virtual assistants are in high demand because they provide an important service to busy entrepreneurs. Working as a virtual assistant is also a gateway to your own entrepreneurial journey. It prepares us for launching our own products and building businesses that fulfill us and give us freedom. Some of the most successful online entrepreneurs started out as virtual assistants and worked their way up to become CEOs in their own right. Offering our services online allows us to uncover what we’re good at, what we love, and where we can offer the most value. This allows for us to build something that will make an impact. How do we get into the world of virtual assistance? What kind of services can we offer? In this episode, I’m joined by Abbey Ashley, founder of The Virtual Savvy. She shares how she went from VA to CEO, and how she found success by focusing on one product. The best way for me to make money is to improve on the things I already have, instead of creating new things. -Abbey Ashley 3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode There is a huge market for VAs: As businesses grow, it stops making financial sense for the owner to spend their time on tasks that don’t make more money or move the business forward. More and more entrepreneurs are realizing they need help, and the virtual assistant niche is thriving as a result. How to go from generalist VA to niched down entrepreneur: Being a VA is an entry point to offering services online. It gives us the launching pad to figure out the problem we can solve, which becomes the service we offer. Starting out as a generalist allows us to attract clients, build our confidence, and then we’ll start seeing what we’re good at. Gradually that will lead to the development of a valuable service. How building upon one product/service gives us time freedom: It takes longer to get traction on a new product and marketing avenue than it does to pour our time and effort into perfecting a product that already exists. By pouring fuel on a product and service we already have, we can prioritize better, maximize our time freedom, and build something that has long-term value. Maybe you have the dream that you want to work for yourself and be your own boss but you don’t know what you want to do.Maybe you know what you want to do, what you’re passionate about but for some reason, you can’t seem to get yourself into action. You can’t seem to get motivated.Maybe you’re already running your business full-time and you still find yourself getting stuck, focusing on all the things that don’t really matter. In today’s episode, I’m going to unpack all three of those scenarios with you and provide some actionable things you can do to get unstuck and take that very next best step.Maybe you’re in the first camp where you know you want to work for yourself but not exactly sure what type of business you want to start or how to channel your creative energy productively. If you’re in this camp it is most likely you have so many creative ideas, passions and you may spend a lot of time during the day scheming of what your business could look like and all the different options yet, when you get home from working or you turn off your work laptop, you’re depleted and have very little to no energy left to do anything. Don’t worry, I’ve been there too.Maybe you think you want to create graphics, build a website, write copy,The challenge when you’re in this camp is that you have so many ideas, you’re just not sure which one to focus on and invest your time and energy into.If you’re in this stage I recommend listing out all things you could do or ideas that you have. Go through each idea and identify and rate them on the following:On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, how excited do I feel about this idea?On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, how economical is this idea? Can I make money from this? Are other people making money teaching/doing/coaching this? (you can do a quick internet search or visit a site call Upwork to browse and see what and if people are getting paid to do what you want to do)On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest, how competent am I in this skill? The majority of people want to make money fast to replace their income and in this case, you want to stick with something that you already have developed a skillset in, vs, having to go out and get extensive training. After you’ve gone through all your ideas and tested them against these three questions, rate them and add up the numbers to see which idea is the most viable in terms of your zone of genius and sweet spot. Start at the top of the list and work your way down. Now that you’ve gotten clarity on which idea to start taking action on, let’s move to the next stage in this journey...When you know WHAT you want to do but don’t know HOW to get started, I recommend the following…Step 1:Find someone who is doing what you already want to be doing. Want to start a VA business, find someone who is doing what you want to be doing and learn from them. If you want to start a VA business, I recommend you check out my friend Abbey Ashley’s course, Savvy System. Abbey spent years being a VA, built a successful business and now she teaches women all across the world how to do the same. We’ve included her free training “Become a Booked out VA” in our training library on Shediditherway.com. (for show notes - LINK directly to the training library). This is the quickest path to success.Step 2:Be willing to invest in yourself. I spent years trying to piece together what I thought would work when I could have invested my dollars (not time) in learning from someone who has already done what I want to do.If you want to start a blog, learn from someone who has launched a successful blog. If you’re in Corporate America and you find that you don’t have a ton of time outside of your job, then you don’t have the time to NOT invest in yourself and pay for a course or coaching. It is worth it and will help accelerate the process of you being where you and where you want to go.Not only does investing in a coach or a course demonstrate your willingness to take the next step, but it also more importantly gives you a plan for what to do with your time that you DO have. The reason why it is so easy to come home from work and procrastinate is that you don’t have a clear plan with how you’re going to spend your time. If you know how you’re going to spend every minute when you get home from work, and you know exactly what you’re going to do in every 30-minute time block, you’re more likely to get work done and not just any work, important work. Work that will help you accelerate the process of getting out of Corporate America and making your ultimate leap.Step 3 (and the most important step):Is to commit. Commitment looks like not questioning what you’re doing when things don’t go the way you planned because they won’t go the way you planned, that I promised. Keep your goals the same but be flexible with the way you reach your goal and destination. Commit more than 3 months or 6 months. Commit for the next 12 months. Let’s say you enroll in a course that is standalone and you take on your time, make a plan for that course, and commit to the plan. What I mean by creating a plan is to decide what time and date you’re going to go through the lessons and what you’re going to do and by when. Start with what you’re going to accomplish and commit to doing in the next two weeks. Maybe that looks like in the next two weeks I want to have watched all of Module 1 training lessons and have done the homework. Great, schedule this on your calendar in 30-minute increments so you know exactly what you’re going to do with the time that you have. Now, if you’re a full-time business owner and you’ve recently made your leap, it can be easy to get distracted by ALL the things that you’re being told you need to do to have a successful business, you can easily get overwhelmed. When you’re constantly consuming content it can be easy to lose your way and get overwhelmed.I recommend limiting social media intake, unsubscribing from any emails that distract you, find a coach or a program and focus on only the things you’re enrolled in at that time. Focus on one strategy at a time. First, make sure you’re taking care of your existing clients. How can you offer up an even better experience for them? Referral marketing is one of the best, fastest and cheapest ways to grow your business. When you do great work, people talk. Then look at your business and identify where does your audience hangs out most of the time, where do you love to show up, where are you generating the most leads and revenue and focus on what is already working. One reason why you might feel like you’re all over the place and can’t see what next step to take is because you’re overloaded with being told so many things you must do right now. The key is to remember that everyone is sharing what worked for them. Which means it could work for you as well. The success is picking the method that most aligns with you, your personality, business and then sticking with that one thing for a period of time.So if you’re in the stage where you have so many ideas and not sure what to do or where to start, list them out and rank them. Then move to the next stage. If you’re already there and you know what you want to do but not sure how to get started, find someone who is doing what you want to do and is successful and learn from them.Lastly, the early stages of building your business can be some of the noisiest and overwhelming. Continue to serve your current clients, learn from a limited number of people and commit.Don’t forget early bird tickets are on sale for this year’s She Did It Her Way Summit until Friday, October 16th. Abbey Ashley’s online career started when she became a ghostwriter for an online course creator. She also hated her job as a stay-at-home phone operator, and knew she craved something more entrepreneurial and fulfilling. Especially since she and her husband found out they were pregnant. That’s when Abbey became a virtual assistant. And over the next two years, she earned a full-time income as a virtual assistant while slowly building up a website and an email list of just 1000 people.Today, we’ll learn how she turned that initial email list of 1000 people into an $8000 launch in round one, and three years later, how she’s used focused strategies to grow The Virtual Savvy into a million dollar business. To learn more about Abbey, The Virtual Savvy, or Teachable, visit teachable.com/eit11.

When Abbey made $8000 from her 1000-person email list, she knew she was on to something. Over the last several years, Abbey Ashley has gone from earning $25 as a virtual assistant, to coordinating monster 6-figure launches of her own product. I actually met Abbey at the bar during Traffic and Conversion Summit. Her “Virtual Assistance Is My Jam,” t-shirt caught my attention and I had to know more. Eight months pregnant with her first daughter, she couldn't imagine putting her child in day care just to go back to work at a job she hated. Note: Click here to download Abbey's top tips from this episode. So she started devouring everything she could find online about working from home and virtual assisting. Before long, she'd landed her first clients and booked enough work not to have to go back to her old job when her leave was up. Eventually she started subcontracting out some of the work, which was her first taste of passive income. As some of her clients were doing really well selling online courses, Abbey tried to enter that world as well. Her first course launches were major flops. Then she did what all good entrepreneurs do when a first attempt doesn't go as planned. She looked at what went wrong, made the necessary changes, and tried again. She pre-sold her next course idea to the tune of $8000 from a 1000-person list. Her second launch generated $40k in sales, and 6 months later her next launch generated $160k in sales. Tune in to how Abbey walked The Side Hustle Path, her actionable hacks and strategies along the way, and how she built and sold her online course even without a huge audience starting out.

What makes a highly successful woman? Society often paints a picture of success that looks like this: Either you're home all the time, dedicating 100% of your time to your family, or you're at work all the time, completely abandoning your friends, family and the rest of your life. But as I discussed with Laura Vanderkam in Episode 34: Excuses That Steal Your Time, that's a myth! The truth is, you can be successful in multiple areas of your life. You can be successful in your career, your relationships, your business and even your health and exercise routines-get this!-all in the same life. It's all about priorities. When every waking minute is taken up for work, routine responsibilities, or taking care of others, you'll feel the opposite of successful; you'll feel stressed out and set back. For example, when I start to feel overwhelmed, it's usually because I'm not spending time on the things that I care about the most. So, I've made it a habit to take a look at my schedule when that happens. It's pretty eye-opening to see what gets my time. If I'm honest, there are a lot of unworthy motivations I have that sometimes creep to the top of my priority list, such as: Pleasing people Being the hero Accomplishments Keeping up with Facebook Pursuing perfectionism Approval Feeling needed Chasing those motivations, no matter how much effort I put into them, always leaves me coming up short. I spin my wheels, and I feel like a failure. The problem with achieving success in your life (and mine!) isn't that we aren't doing enough, and it's not that we're doing too much. Often, it's that we're doing the wrong things. So, let's talk about the right things! And don't worry, you don't have to sacrifice-at least, not in the way you think you do. In this episode, I'll reveal habits, characteristics and traits that are present in the lives of highly successful women. I'll dive into the seven things you need to prioritize to achieve success. And the great news it this: If you don't currently have them, I promise you can learn to practice all of them starting today! By the way, you know what's not on the list of traits of successful women? Pleasing people Being the hero Seeking approval (You get the idea!) My guest this week is Ali Brown! Ali is the host of the highly successful Glambition podcast, and her passion is to see women succeed in business! Ali's story of success began with recognizing what she was good at. She was a mover and a shaker working in an office of-as she puts it-"turtles!" It didn't take long for Ali to realize her own potential, get excited about doing things her own way, and quit her day job to pursue her own freelance business full time. In my conversation with Ali, we'll talk about: What it means to blaze your own trail, do business differently, and design your business around your life How Ali got started using email newsletters when the Internet was just becoming a thing The benefits of being inspired by other women rather than intimidated by them What success really looks like today Three trends she sees in highly successful women Success Story: Abbey Ashley's Wildly Successful Courses & Coaching! Our success story this week is Abbey Ashley, founder of The Virtual Savvy. Abbey says she helps "savvy starters launch and grow their virtual assistant business to 5K months and beyond!" Abbey took what she knew from being a virtual assistant and turned that knowledge and experience into online courses. While her first course launch was by no means successful-she only had one customer sign up-she didn't give up there. The next iteration of her business was in virtual assistant business coaching, and she started The Virtual Savvy in August 2016. Since then, she's become hyper-focused and (at the time of publication) has made over $300K in sales! I'm so excited that she's sharing her strategy for success with us. Plus,...

In my conversation with Ali, we’ll talk about: What it means to blaze your own trail, do business differently, and design your business around your life How Ali got started using email newsletters when the Internet was just becoming a thing The benefits of being inspired by other women rather than intimidated by them What success really looks like today Three trends she sees in highly successful women Success Story: Abbey Ashley's Wildly Successful Courses & Coaching! Our success story this week is Abbey Ashley, founder of The Virtual Savvy. Abbey says she helps “savvy starters launch and grow their virtual assistant business to 5K months and beyond!” Abbey took what she knew from being a virtual assistant and turned that knowledge and experience into online courses. While her first course launch was by no means successful—she only had one customer sign up—she didn’t give up there. The next iteration of her business was in virtual assistant business coaching, and she started The Virtual Savvy in August 2016. Since then, she’s become hyper-focused and (at the time of publication) has made over $300K in sales! I’m so excited that she’s sharing her strategy for success with us. Perhaps you dread going to the office every day because you simply aren’t inspired by what you do. Or maybe your heart isn’t in the traditional 9 to 5 anymore because of little ones at home that you are missing. Either way, today’s guest has been in your shoes, and she knows how to launch a business as a virtual assistant that will afford you the opportunity to be the parent you want to be and develop a career that you love.
