Andrea Wilson Woods, Gen X, joins Yo to discuss the book she's edited: I'd Rather Be Dead than Deaf. The book is the journal of Adrienne Wilson, a teenage artist, poet, and Andrea's beloved sister. Before her death from liver cancer at the age of fifteen, Adrienne expressed her funny, bright soul in this prolific journal. Her musings on life, relationships, music, love, and the beautiful grime of her adopted hometown of Los Angeles leap off the page; her deep sensitivity and perspective are captured in full-color prints of her award-winning artwork. We will all relate to their love story! Andrea is a keynote speaker, a writer who loves to tell stories, and a patient advocate who founded the nonprofit Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association. For over ten years, Andrea worked in the education field as a teacher and professor for public and private schools as well as universities. Andrea obtained her master's degree in professional writing from the University of Southern California; her nonfiction writing has won national awards. Her best-selling and award-winning book, Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days, is a medical memoir about raising and losing her sister to liver cancer.  Here are the topics we covered:       Blue Faery Foundation's mission      Misconceptions around liver cancer       Adrienne's view of herself as a leader       Challenging the common sense view of grief      Lessons learned leading Blue Faery         Advice for different generations Here are the three takeaways from the series: 1.   Adrienne didn't see herself as leader but she is taking the lead to teach us about cancer and death through her art and poetry. 2.  Grief isn't linear or predictable – It took Andrea 17 years to be angry. 3.   Liver cancer is filled with misconceptions with resources lacking to support patients, especially women, and Andrea's book provides a voice from a patient to patients. They say cancer affects someone in everyone's network.  There are more than 100 types and each has its own unique way of affecting the body.     Cancer patients have to deal with illness and treatments and are best suited to concentrating on what they need to do for their physical health.  Unfortunately, it can also be a mental challenge and a great caregiver and advocate is an extremely important part of a patient's journey.  Andrea Wilson Woods has a moving story about serving many roles in her sister's life as she was being treated for liver cancer.  Since that most challenging time, Andrea has dedicated her life to supporting patients and caregivers by educating them about their disease and helping them find the most cutting-edge treatments.  This episode is for anyone with compassion for the ill.   You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.bobdepasquale.com/podcast/andreawilsonwoods

She returned home, fell into bed for a few weeks, and eventually pulled herself together and went back to work. A few months later when she discovered an almond-sized lump in her armpit, she did everything she tells her patients not to do and dismissed it, or wrote it off as a “fat lump."Months went by before Natasha finally got a mammogram, but radiology saw nothing in either breast. It was the armpit lump that caught their attention. Next step was an ultrasound, where the lump was clearly visible. One painful biopsy later, Natasha found out she had cancer; in one life-changing moment, the nurse became the patient. This podcast is about what happens when you have breast cancer, told in real time.Host and Executive Producer: Eva SheieCo-Host: Kristen VenglerEditor and Audio Engineer: Daniel CroeserTheme Music: Them Highs and Lows, Bird of FigmentProduction Assistant: Mary Ellen ClarksonCover Art Designer: Shawn HiattAssistant Producer: Hannah BurkhartBreast Cancer Stories is a production of The Axis.PROUDLY MADE IN AUSTIN, TEXAS

What's the value?
"Joy" - Andrea Wilson Woods

What's the value?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 11, 2023 61:46

My guest, Andrea, and I spent an hour trying to make sense of a seemingly simple word-- "joy." If joy is your guiding light what happens when the thing you think you need to do does not result in joy? Does that mean you are doing the wrong thing or are you just a bad person? Is all joy the same? Is the joy of partying in college, being free, and having a good time with friends; is that joy the same as the joy you get caring for a sick loved one? Should we be using the same term to explain the feeling of helping your sister bath because she is too weak from cancer treatments to do it herself? If you are one of the "lucky" ones who has the ability and the tolerance to deal with suffering, look passed it, and find ways to endure so that you can still have joy in life--is that a gift or a curse? Why are joy and suffering so interconnected? When I have a guest who has had such deep, life changing experiences, it feels like such an opportunity to explore questions like these and try to make sense of it all. Andrea is that guest, as she's dealt with a difficult childhood, abusive relationships, becoming a mom to her younger sister, and then watching her sister/daughter die at the age of 15 from cancer. These are horrific experiences, which don't even get into what life has been like since her sister passed away (lost friendships, the grieving process, depression, etc.). Fortunately there are people like Andrea in this world who go through these experiences and then try to use them to find/bring more joy in the world. It sounds counter intuitive, if not impossible. But Andrea now spends much of her life as a patient advocate who founded the nonprofit Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association. Andrea is the CEO and co-founder of Cancer University, a for-profit, social-benefit, digital health company. She is also an author of a medical memoir titled Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days. It was truly special to spend time with Andrea and have an authentic conversation with her about it all. To try to understand if it is actually possible to find joy in a life filled with so much suffering. I hope you guys enjoy this one as much as I did.

Her best-selling and award-winning book, Better Off Bald: A Life in 147 Days, is a medical memoir about raising and losing her sister, Adrienne, to liver cancer. ✨A few highlights from the show: 1. Even if there is resistance from the provider and healthcare team, always ask questions. Ask many as you need to ask until you get the information that you need in a way that you understand it. Your life or your loved one's life can depend on it. 2. You have to be a force of nature. You have to stand up for the patient because the patient's focus needs to be on getting well and resting. Often the patient doesn't have the time or energy to participate in those conversations. So the caregiver, whether it's a spouse or a friend, or a parent or sibling, the onus is on the caregiver often to take charge. 3. Always keep track of your medical records. Keep them organized in a binder and in a place where you can easily access them. It is a good idea to have electronic and paper copies. Always keep a medical journal with your notes and observations.

Hello everyone and welcome back to our podcast, The Patients Speak, where we're combining the business and science innovations of healthcare with the patient voice and how to help them navigate the system to get from diagnosis to wellness faster and more smoothly, and navigate the complicated healthcare system. Today our guest is Andrea Wilson Woods, president and founder of a non-profit called Blue Faery for liver cancer. She is also the CEO of Cancer U, a for-profit social impact healthcare startup in addition to being the author of a best-selling book, Better Off Bald: The Life of 140 Days. It's a medical memoir about raising her young sister.“I think you just need to not assume that you know what a patient wants, you need to listen and really listen and ask more questions,” says Andrea. As she gives us her greatest tip for us not to assume that we know what a patient automatically wants.“I started Blue Faery in memory of my sister Adrienne. I was 22 years old and living in Los Angeles,” she tells us.Blue Faery's mission is to prevent, treat and cure primary liver cancer, specifically hepatocellular carcinoma through research, education, and advocacy. She started Blue Faery in memory of her sister who was diagnosed with Stage 4 liver cancer about a month after her 15th birthday. and she only lived 147 days with that diagnosis. In our conversation, we talk about the 20th anniversary of the founding of the organization and the many wonderful things they have achieved in that time. They have a research award, they give out every year on her sister's birthday. Which they have been able to increase over the years. They also have a lot of patient education programs. All patient education materials they ship worldwide for free in multiple languages. They have a lot of different advocacy programs.A year ago they started their first liver disease and liver cancer prevention and awareness campaign, and that has expanded. It is called Love Your Liver. In summary, because of her sister's journey, her book has been instrumental in educating people who are either in sales or even medical affairs and helping them better understand the patient's journey. She and her team have been amazing at advocating for choice which boils down to empowering patients with information just in case they feel like they may be out of options. We also touched on her other outstanding venture Cancer U is an online platform for both cancer patients and caregivers to educate, empower and engage them to become advocates for their care, improve outcomes, lower stress, and reduce cost. As we conclude, we emphasize how important a caregiver's job is. Whether it's a spouse, an adult, a child or sibling, or even a parent of a pediatric patient, that caregiver is the secretary, the butler, the chauffeur, the maid, and the cook. That caregiver knows everything, so you need to get them in on the conversation from the get-go. With the goal to learn more. She also has a tip for anybody who is going into healthcare startup world that has a tech component “Make sure one of your co-founders is a tech co-founder. Imagine being on your commute to London, the usual crowded train, thinking about what the day ahead holds, wondering if you'll get a chance for a cuppa before you get to the office and then, you hear a crash, get thrown from your seat and wake up about 3 weeks later in hospital with 3rd-degree burns and your loved ones around you, not having known if you would make it. Finding out that 31 people on your train died and you should have been the 32nd. I'm not sure that's exactly how my guest's experience played out, but as you'll hear in this episode, it was along these lines. Pam Warren was a survivor of the Paddington Rail crash in October 1999. You wouldn't know it now, thanks to the work of skilful surgeons but Pam's face and body were badly burned. You could imagine that you would want to focus on your recovery and getting your life back. The idea of seeking justice and reforms might not be the top of your agenda but that's what Pam Warren did. After discovering that the rail companies found it cheaper to pay compensation for accidents than make the train network safer, she could not let that stand and together with other survivors, campaigned tirelessly for better train safety.  We will never know how many lives have been saved by Pam's campaigning but we can learn so much from her and the success of the Paddington Survivors Group. In this episode:Pam's personal story of the Paddington crash and what caused itThe decision and cost of becoming a campaigner for train safetyThe challenges of influencing industry and governmentWhat Pam learned from previous safety campaigners to know what did and didn't workThe hardest part about influencing the people at the top of government and industryPam's top skill for influence in meetings with top brassand much more as always. In what was a delightful conversation around some serious topics I can honestly say it was a privilege to speak with Pam and also find out what led Pam to become a professional speaker. It is always my goal to bring you interesting and informative conversations with experts and this is one occasion when I feel that brief was thoroughly filled. You can find out more about Pam and her professional speaking work here https://www.pamwarren.co.uk/  Pam's book recommendations were 'Why We Sleep' by Matthew Walker and Leo Tolstoy's 'War & Peace'.Next episode we continue our focus on large scale influence with Andrea Wilson-Woods who became a campaigner after her sister's death from liver cancer. Because even though I didn't want better for myself, I wanted better for [Adrienne]. And by being able to focus on her, I was able to get through all of those challenges.”“I can remember a time where I was working four jobs and all part-time, but it was a way that I could be on her schedule and be there for her, but they were four completely different jobs. So I was traveling all over Los Angeles. It felt like I was every single day. Um, but you know, she was my. In many ways. “Even opening my eyes was just a miserable experience and I just didn't understand it.” Two years after her sister’s death and in the grips of anguish and despair, Andrea Wilson Woods sat on the edge of a rooftop in San Francisco thinking it would be so easy to leap. Coming to her senses, she decided not to end it all. But that incident sparked something in Andrea: a nagging feeling it wasn’t just a profound grief she had felt since losing her sister. But as Andrea broached the topic with her therapist, her concerns were ignored.  Seeking a second opinion confirmed her suspicions: She had Bipolar II Disorder. While the diagnosis brought relief, Andrea was hesitant to speak out about it -- until many years later when realized sharing her story was the only way to normalize mental health. https://letsnottalkaboutit.comHosts: Camille TuuttiSharon TigerAmanda Ziadeh Guest: Andrea Wilson WoodsExpert: Yuritzy Gomez Serrano, AMFTEditor:Tessa HallBehind the Scenes: Lisa AbeytaMusic: “Incoming” by Jeffrey C.
