Saurav is a writer and filmmaker primarily known for his work on the crime-noir graphic novel Mumbai Confidential and his collaboration with Deepak Chopra for the comic book series Deepak Chopra Presents India Authentic. He is also the author of the essay “Echoes Of Eternity” for the Graven Images anthology that examined Hindu reincarnation motifs in American Superhero comics, especially in the work of Grant Morisson's “Animal Man” and Alan Moore's “Supreme.” ​In this episode, Saurav and I discuss the intriguing intersection of religion and comic books as we compare aspects of Hinduism and Christianity. We explored how themes like sacrifice, morality, and resilience in superhero narratives resonate with theological concepts from these two traditions, revealing the universal aspects underlying both religions. Whether examining parallels with ancient religious art or the modern dilemmas of comic characters, we navigated the rich landscape where theology and comics converge.

We return to our coverage of DC's 1989 Animal Man series—Grant Morrison's first ongoing for the U.S. comics market—with a look at issues #10 through #17 (commonly collected in trade as “Origin of the Species”). Now that we've met Buddy Baker and seen him join the Justice League, we'll follow his investigation into the mysteries of his secret origin (which, as it turns out, no longer fits into post-Crisis continuity). This leads us to discuss Iron Age DC's haphazard approach to its own canon while also wading into more serious territory, as this is the part of the run that most directly and explicitly confronts real-world animal rights and other political issues. These stories force Buddy—and the reader—to consider some difficult problems without easy solutions, but we'll also see how the series' letters page became a forum for lively debate among a community of correspondents searching for answers together.

Riding the wave of comics' “British Invasion” of the 1980s, Grant Morrison made their mark on U.S. superhero comics with the unlikely reinvention of an obscure DC Comics do-gooder. In time, Morrison and penciller Chas Truog would elevate Animal Man's consciousness to a state of awareness about his own fictional nature, but in the early part of their run, the book is mostly concerned with a middle-class family man balancing a passion for animal-rights activism with his attempts to “make it” in the superhero biz. We look at the first nine-issue arc (collected in the first Animal Man trade), an often-overlooked part of this groundbreaking series.

On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award-winning comics creator Jeff Lemire. Originally from Woodslee, Ontario, Jeff wrote and drew comics for years while working day jobs, until he eventually self-published his book Lost Dogs in 2005. This led to making Essex County for Top Shelf, and since then he's written and drawn a veritable slew of fantastic comics, both creator-owned works for publishers like Image and Dark Horse and for-hire books for companies like Marvel, DC and Vertigo. This includes comics like The Underwater Welder, Sweet Tooth, Animal Man, Extraordinary X-Men, Descender and Ascender, Black Hammer, and Royal City. It should be noted that this is just a small sampling of his work, and currently, he is writing Little Monsters and Phantom Road for Image. Grant Morrison takes on one of the most forgotten heroes of the 1960s and reinvents him in only in the way Morrison can. Buddy Baker, has the power to imitate any animal's ability that he can sense around him. This leads to him joining the fight for animal rights, while still taking up the duties of being a superhero in the DC Universe and being a father/husband to his family . However, when the secrets of Buddy's past begin to arise the question remains who is behind all the evil going on around him. We recommend this story as one of the key Grant Morrison comic book runs that explains his unique writing style that not many other writers in the industry come close to.

The Doom Patrol debuted in 1963, just a few months before the X-Men. The two titles had a lot in common: a group of superpowered misfits led by a man in a wheelchair. But while the X-Men soon found their way into the pop cultural canon, the Doom Patrol could only muster a cult following — and only recently started rising into the mainstream due to the eponymous HBO TV series. But Doom Patrol still had a succession of heavy hitting talent inventing consistently weird challenges for the team to fight through, from John Byrne to Gerard Way to Grant Morrison. This week on Quarantined Comics, Raman and Ryan will review half of Morrison's 45-issue run, which started in 1989. Morrison established themselves as one of the hottest writers during the 80s, bringing his odd sensibility from the pages of the British sci-fi series 2000AD to DC superhero stories, including a long run writing the series Animal Man and the one-shot Batman: Arkham Asylum. But with his their run on Doom Patrol... well, maybe it was just a little too much Morrison for Ryan and Raman to handle...
