“There is a voice inside that does not use words. Listen.” ~ Rumi Guest Introduction:  Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast. I'm your host Cindy MacMillan. I have conversations with coaches, spiritual explorers and thought leaders from all walks of life about beginnings, endings, and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well.  In this episode, I'm thrilled to dive into the work of Judith Maxey, whose exploration into alternative and traditional healing practices began while pursuing a Master's degree in Applied Anthropology, exploring the cultural roots of healing.   Judith is the owner of Almus Energy Medicine, has been practicing energy medicine for over 15 years.  She is an experienced and certified Usui/Holy Fire® and Karuna Reiki® master teacher, mentor, shamanic practitioner, meditation guide and essential oil specialist. In 2023, she also became a certified End-of-Life Doula. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Welcome Judith. I've really been looking forward to this conversation. Judith: “There's always an underlying level of grief. Right now, I feel, in part because of the pandemic we just simply did not acknowledge the grieving that might have happened. That should have happened because we have a very, in my opinion, narrow perspective on what grief is.” Judith: “I'm a doTERRA wellness advocate, so I use mostly doTERRA oils. I believe in their quality, but I use a Snow Lotus aromatherapy oil that was created by a Five Element Acupuncturist, and it's called Sedate Metal and so from the Chinese medicine perspective. It's about metal and it's very good in fall for the lungs where we hold grief and it is a blend of Copaiba balsam, Atlas cedarwood, Amyris, and Geranium.  And I would never even attempt to blend it the way that Peter Holmes does. It's just an amazing blend. I keep it in my office.” Judith: “I'm so happy that there are end-of-life doulas  for the person who is passing and also for everyone involved  and that's what I found was really there was so much learning  in my end of life doula training  about that about the  interactions between the caregivers and what was happening for everyone how to be  aware of the cues and  Like everything else, Cindy,  again, I feel like I say a certain few things throughout the conversation, but it's about being present.” Judith: “And then I started, in the same community as my Reiki teacher, I'll give her a shout out, Colleen Benelli, Licensed Reiki Teacher, The International Center for Reiki Training. She was also involved in The LightSong Community of 21st Century Shamanism and Energy Medicine. So, I started doing core shamanism training as well.” Judith: “You are meant to use us and, and we're meant to work together. And so, I started bringing in essential oils, the plants to my work.  And I just feel like the combination of the shamanic practices that, I'd say in general, allow you to work with larger energies than yourself, Reiki, and the miracle, the magic of the plants, you know, getting to work with those three in a session with someone is a powerhouse. It's so supportive. Judith: “I would suggest, your ceremony be specific to you and what you're comfortable with. And most importantly, what you will actually do.  You know, we can look at a lot of different ceremonies, but what calls to you? Do you want to gather in a big crowd? Do you want to gather with your three closest friends? In the darkness, with a candle? Being grateful?  Saying out loud what you want to get rid of?  You know?  I think those elements are the important part. Again, gratitude, community, release, and calling in what you would like for the new year or your life. I'll say that I would suggest those same elements for any ceremony. Judith: “Forgiveness is so much larger than that. A little bit like grief, right?” Judith: “I also want to say that in 2024. I'll be coming out with Plant Speak Retreats, and that's for the doTERRA community to learn how to build relationships, spiritual personal energetic relationships with the oils.” Resource Mentioned: Firewalk Ceremony  You can find Judith Maxey at: Website Instagram Mentorship Holistic Living: Embracing Wholeness In Everyday Life Series The Healing Power of Sound Baths with Stephanie Weber Trust in Your Soul with Sonee Singh Empowering Your Inner Wellness Warrior: Insights from Joyce Jimenez Journey of Healing with Alana Keddie Conversation with Julie Jancius: The Angel Medium Confidence is a Journey with Sha Sparks

Galemba also tackles the hard topic of the Externalization of Borders the United States and other countries sometimes resort to, which, according to her, can be seen as neglecting their responsibility to take in asylum seekers.Rebecca Galemba, Ph.D., is an anthropologist who studies the intersections of globalization, illicit markets, migration, security, and labor in Mexico, Central America, and the U.S.She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on Qualitative Research Methodologies, Cultures of Development, Migration, and Illicit Markets.  My guest today is Robbie Davis-Floyd PhD,  Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Anthropology, Rice University, Houston and Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology. Dr. Davis-Floyd is a medical/reproductive anthropologist, international speaker (over 1000 presentations) and researcher in transformational models in childbirth, midwifery and obstetrics. She is author of over 80 articles, 23 encyclopedia entries, and of Birth as an American Rite of Passage (1992, 2003) and Ways of Knowing about Birth: Mothers, Midwives, Medicine, and Birth Activism (2018); coauthor of From Doctor to Healer: The Transformative Journey (1998) and The Power of Ritual (2016); and co-editor of 12 collections. Robbie serves as Editor for the International Childbirth Initiative and Lead Editor for the Routledge series “Social Science Perspectives on Childbirth and Reproduction.”I asked her about her most recent book, BIRTHING TECHNO-SAPIENS: HUMAN-TECHNOLOGY CO-EVOLUTION AND THE FUTURE OF REPRODUCTION. What is a techno-sapiens? After offering an explanation, I wanted to know the meaning of cyborg.I read that once Robbie was asked by a frustrated Latin American epidemiologist,"Why don't obstetricians get it? We epidemiologists understand that the vast majority of what they do during labor and birth is just plain wrong. Lots of pediatricians do too. Like—cutting the umbilical cord immediately is just plain stupid! So why don't OBs act according to the evidence, as we have long been insisting that they do? Instead they just blindly follow obstetric traditions—why can't they learn to think for themselves? “ She answered that the majority of obstetricians are fear driven; fear of anything going wrong, fear of being sued, fear of criticism by colleagues if they dare not to follow the status quo. She said none of the obstetricians practicing in the US have ever seen a normal unassisted vaginal birth. Robbie would dearly like to see present day obstetrics humanized.Robbie is, amongst her many other projects, working on a personal memoir. My guest next week will be Susan Highsmith Phd, Counselor, Author of  "The First Fairy Tales I - IV"   a series of fairy tales for unborn, newborn and very young children designed to help parents bond with their children and children attach to their parents. If you liked this podcast please tell your friends about it, subscribe to this podcast wherever you listen to podcasts and/or write a brief note on apple podcasts, check out my blogs on Psychology Today at https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/contributors/thomas-r-verny-md

Gigi earned an MA in applied anthropology from the University of North Texas. She was a partner in the Practica Group and is currently a Qualitative UX Researcher at Indeed.com. About Gigi Taylor Gigi Taylor is a cultural anthropologist working as a qualitative UX researcher with Indeed in Austin, Texas. As a research practitioner, she conducts cultural anthropology research for business. As a scholar, she conducts anthropology research of business.  What distinguishes her applied and academic research is that she uses a cultural anthropological lens to study business—advertising, consumers, brands, consumption, users, products, digital experiences, and organizations. She embraces the idea that consumer and user experience insights informed by a cultural analysis can serve as the muse and inspiration for all aspects of product and brand strategy.  The magic of cultural analysis is the theory of interpretive and symbolic cultural anthropology (Clifford Geertz and Victor Turner). She was a partner with Practica Group, a consumer anthropology research consultancy where she conducted ethnographies, focus groups, interviews, diary studies, and observations. She started her research strategy career as an Account Planner at Publics & Hal Riney Advertising in San Francisco and has owned Luminosity Research, a qualitative research consultancy, since 2006. She has a PhD and MA in Advertising from the University of Texas and an MA in Applied Anthropology from the University of North Texas. Her published academic research has appeared in both advertising and anthropological journals. Recommended Links Gigi Taylor's website Gigi Taylor on LinkedIn

They discuss the work Dr. Myers has done with her organization, Farm to Grow, as well as her documentary film Rhythms of the Land. This film project will spotlight an array of farmers, rice growers, hog ranchers, dairy ranchers, barefoot farmers, sharecroppers, basket-weavers, shrimp farmers, vegetable farmers, and gardeners, each sharing their memorable stories with us for the first time. Dr. Gail Myers is a cultural anthropologist who earned the Doctorate in Anthropology from Ohio State University, the Masters in Applied Anthropology from Georgia State University, and the Bachelors in English from Florida State University. She is also the Co-founder of Farms to Grow, Inc, and has been advocating for African American farmers for more than 20 years. Dr. Myers began researching African American farmers while at Ohio State University in 1997. Her passion for Black farmers developed as a result of hearing stories of their loss and struggles without recognition for their contributions. Myers is considered an expert in the anthropology of African American farming. In 1920, there were 920,000 black farmers in the United States, although many of those were sharecroppers and tenant farmers. Today there are 42,000. Dr. Myers' overarching goal is to preserve the stories and honor the legacy and the lives of African American farmers. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/afrosandknivespod/message

Our guest today is Matt Artz. Matt is a business and design anthropologist, consultant, author, speaker, and creator. As a creator he creates podcasts, music, and visual art. Many people will know Matt through his Anthropology in Business and Anthro to UX podcasts. We talk about his interdisciplinary educational background — he has degrees  in Computer Information Systems, Biotechnology,  Finance and Management Information Systems, and Applied Anthropology — and Matt explains what drew him along this path.He shares his recent realisation that he identifies primarily as a technologist ("I am still at heart a technologist. I love technology. I love playing with technology") and his conflict around the "harm that comes out of some AI, but I'm also really interested in it and to some degree kind of helping to fuel the rise of it."This leads to us discussing — in the context of recommender systems and Google more broadly — how we are forced to identify on the internet as one thing or another, either an anthropologist, a technologist, or a creator but not all three. As Matt explains, "finding an ideal way to brand yourself on the Internet is actually very critical...it's a real challenge".We turn next to recommender systems and his interest in how capital and algorithmic bias contribute to inequality in the creator economy, which is based on his art market research as the Head of Product & Experience for Artmatcher.  Artmatcher is a mobile app that aims to address access and inclusion issues in the art market. The work being done on Artmatcher may lead to innovations in the way the approximately 50 million people worldwide in the Creator Economy get noticed in our "technologically-mediated world" as well as in other multi-sided markets (e.g. Uber, Airbnb) where there are multiple players. It's a model he hopes will ensure that people's "hard work really contributes to their own success".Design anthropology is one approach to solving this challenge, Matt suggests, because it is "very interventionist, very much focused on what are we going to do to enact some kind of positive change". As Matt says, "even if this [model] doesn't work, I do feel there's some value in just having the conversation about how can we value human behaviour and reward people for productive effort and how can we factor that back into the broader conversation of responsible tech or responsible AI?".He recommends two books, Design Anthropology: Theory and Practice, edited by Wendy Gunn, Ton Otto, Rachel Charlotte Smith, and Media, Anthropology and Public Engagement, edited by Sarah Pink and Simone Abram.Lastly, Matt leaves us with a hopeful note about what we can do in the face of "really hard challenges" such as climate change. You can find Matt on his website, follow him on Twitter @MattArtzAnthro, and connect with him on LinkedIn.

Joanna Mcewen joined me on the show for this episode, and it was incredible to hear her work on sound practice and the power of sound in our physical and emotional lives. Joanna is an experienced and qualified Sound Practitioner and holds an MA in Applied Anthropology, Youth and Community where her thesis was on the power of food and ritual in communities.   She is an Empowered Learning Practitioner for those with SEN and has worked with special educational needs, young people, and families for over 20 years. Her TED talk (which I definitely recommend everyone watch) on the link between vibrations, harmonious sound, and serendipitous moments currently has over 1.3 million views. It's not just the power of sound, but also the power of silence that can have huge impacts on our lives. It's the stillness, those moments, as Joanna said, where we come into that sigh, and we just relax. Whether you're doing yoga or doing sound practice, you need to have that pause to allow whatever work you have done and changes you're going through to settle into your body. Personally, I need music with everything I do. If I want to be creative, buy something, respond to emails, I need music on because it inspires me. Joanna explained in this episode the raw power of music and why we have that connection to it, why we have a connection to vibration. This episode is essential listening for anyone who is curious about the power of therapeutic sound, spiritual expansion, and how serendipity can be manifested through our relationship with sound.    https://www.barbramay.com/episode14

Matt Artz: [00:00:00] Today, I'm with Amy Santee, a former UXR or transitioning out of UX, but with lots of UX experience now turning into a UX career coach. And so we're going to have a great conversation about, not only Amy's experience working in UX, but also all of her recommendations of how you might be able to transition into UX. [00:00:20] And you've worked in companies such as eBay. You have run your own business. Now you're really starting up. Sort of second version of your business, if you will. So you have a lot of broad experience. You want to maybe talk a little bit about that, what first brought you to anthropology? [00:00:36] How did you maybe find your way to UX? Give us a little overview. [00:00:39] Amy Santee: [00:00:39] Yeah, absolutely. And thank you so much for having me on your show. I'm really excited to be here. So yeah, again, my name's Amy Santee and I use she, her pronouns. And I live in Portland, Oregon. How I got into anthropology. It has a really long history. [00:00:53]I knew it as early as age 14 or 15 that I wanted to be an anthropologist and that's because of a computer game I played where in the game I met Dennis. Ethnobotanist on the Amazon trail. That was the name of the game actually. And I just got really curious about ethnobotany and then I, found that was a subdiscipline of anthropology and I got broader and broader The first book I picked up at borders. [00:01:17]I don't know if you remember that store, but it was Napoleon Shannon's book about being in the Amazon rainforest with different tribes. And I know that's actually a controversial book now. But I didn't know that back then, I was just kinda like exploring what was anthropology all about. And I did end up going to get my bachelor's in anthropology, as well as my master's and. [00:01:41] Initially I had that kind of basic simplified understanding of anthropology as studying other cultures and like going off and traveling the world. And, as we know, that's not a, that's really only a slice of what doing anthropology could look like. And so throughout my education especially into my master's degree, which I got at the university of Memphis in 2011. [00:02:04]My, my world expanded, or my view of anthropology expanded to encompass basically answering questions and solving problems that relate to human beings in any place on any topic. And yeah. My program at Memphis was an applied anthropology program. And so we took I took a lot of courses on applied anthropology and the realms of let's say education, healthcare urban development Basically the main topics that you might find in an anthropology program? [00:02:34] I did take a consumer research course when I was there as well, which I think

Lately, psychedelics have gained traction in the mainstream media. With decriminalization laws, new documentaries, and the electronic music scene, psychedelics have gained popularity as a medium of transcendence and healing. How can psychedelics be effectively utilized as medicine? How can we integrate such an elusive experience into Western Healthcare? How do psychedelics help us integrate ideas of mind, body and spirit? Join us as we strive to answer these questions. Lucia is a medical anthropologist interested in substance use and addiction, harm reduction, and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. Lucia Marie Terpak earned her B.A. in Religious Studies with a minor in Psychology from Wake Forest University in 2015. As an undergraduate, Lucia rediscovered her love for understanding and expanding her consciousness, and in the fall of 2012, Lucia spent a semester studying Buddhism and practicing daily meditation in a Burmese Buddhist monastery in Bodh Gaya, India. In 2018, Lucia received a Source Award from Source Research Foundation to support her research on ibogaine and addiction at a detoxification clinic in Mexico. Lucia successfully defended her master's thesis and graduated with an M.A. in medical anthropology from The University of Colorado Denver in December 2019. Lucia presented research at the 2017 Society for Applied Anthropology annual meetings on explanatory models and barriers to care experienced by low-income Type II diabetes patients. She also presented her research on ibogaine and addiction at the 2020 Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelic Research. Focus Spiritual Virtues: Awareness, Curiosity, Interconnectedness In my conversation with Lucia, we brought awareness to the growing field of psychedelic medicine. With this awareness, we opened the door for curiosity into how psychedelics can serve as vehicles for healing for those with unprocessed trauma, addiction, or mental illness. With understanding the potential benefits of this unique type of medicine, an internalization of the interconnectedness of your mental, emotional, and physical pain ensues. This week we bring you a very very special episode! Last year we partnered with the Australian Network of Student Anthropologists, or ANSA for short and recorded their roundtable at the AAS held at the Australian National University! The roundtable discussion featured the likes of Dr Marcus Barber, Dr Sophie Chao, Dr Jayne Curnow, Dr Derek Elias, Dr Bronwyn Hall and Leslie Pyne and was hosted by ANSA president Dr Hanna Jagtenberg. All of whom have a wide array of experiences as anthropologists and in their professional careers. Throughout the roundtable, Hanna asks the guests how they got to their respective positions, some of their learnings over their careers and what sort of skills have they transferred over from their anthropological work. The audio quality might be a bit different from what you are used to because we recorded at a conference venue and not at our usual studio! Head over to ANSA's Twitter and Facebook page and let them know you liked this collaboration! And head to our website for a full list of links and citations! This anthropology podcast is supported by the Australian Anthropological Society, the ANU's College of Asia and the Pacific and College of Arts and Social Sciences, and the Australian Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, and is produced in collaboration with the American Anthropological Association.
