Fridays 10:00am - 11:00am (EDT)WHAT WILL THE AUDIENCE LEARN?Mental health is a topic that is very much at the forefront of the news these days and for good reason. One of the stark realities to come to light over the past 2 years has been the impact of the pandemic on the mental health and social development of children. With so many interactions occurring in the virtual space, kids were missing out on the social and mental benefits that come with attending school and social interactions. For children in the hospital, the level of isolation they were experiencing was particularly traumatic. We learned from our hospital partners that mental health wasn't just a concern, it was an impending crisis, particularly for teens. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is the second leading cause of death between the ages of 10 and 20. Children who are being treated in pediatric psychiatric wards are there for a variety of reasons and their needs are just as varied. Unfortunately, this is often a population whose interactions and activities are even more restricted than other hospitalized children. We knew this was an area where enCourage Kids could make a significant impact. The relationships we have built over the last three decades with the child life and medical staff in our partner hospitals put us in a unique position to help spread awareness of the challenges many hospital systems are facing and how we are supporting them in meeting the needs of their communities, including those of your audience members and their friends and families.EPISODE SUMMARY:Jean Butler is the President and CEO of enCourage Kids Foundation, a renowned nonprofit organization which helps humanize healthcare for children and their families through resourcing impact-driven pediatric programs. Plus it's all free.  It gives me great pleasure to have for the first time on Admissions Straight Talk, Lawrence Mur'ray, Executive Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at Dartmouth University's Tuck School of Business. Lawrence has been in higher ed since he graduated high school. He earned his BA and MPA at the University of Arizona and began his career in admissions there. He then became Assistant Director of MBA Admissions at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, followed by a stint at UNC Kenan-Flagler where he rose to become the Director of the Undergraduate Business Program. He then served as Senior Assistant Dean of Graduate Business Programs at Fordham's Gabelli School of Business for over six years and joined Dartmouth Tuck as Executive Director of Admissions and Financial Aid just this past August. 7;'/ Lawrence, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. [2:00] Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm excited to be here. And I'm delighted to speak with you. Now let's start with a basic question, which is typically how I open these interviews. Can you provide an overview of Dartmouth Tuck's MBA program? [2:06] Yeah. Great. Thank you. Again, I'm excited to be here. Thank you for having me. The Tuck School of Business is at Dartmouth College here in Hanover, New Hampshire. We are an extremely rigorous, two-year, Ivy League MBA, nestled here in the Upper Valley, which provides an  opportunity to reflect and focus while you're here. It's an opportunity for students to really connect with one another. Again, it's a rigorous academic program. I think sometimes people think that coming to a small school means there's limited opportunities, but there are boundless opportunities here with a culture of collaboration and community. You can do almost anything you want to do in terms of your career aspirations. We have a culture of co-investment, so we see the students as partners along all dimensions of their journey, whether it's the admissions journey, whether it's the student services journey, or the career journey, and so that co-investment serves as the cornerstone of the Tuck ethos. And in terms of the opportunities, some of the opportunities that struck me in preparing for the call, one of them was the Global Insight Expeditions. Could you touch on that? [3:20] Yeah. Our Global Insight Expeditions are a great opportunity for the students to focus on a particular area of the country with a particular faculty member. They're typically two to three weeks, and it's an opportunity for them to learn about a particular element of a faculty member's research, which is anchored in a particular area. It's also an opportunity for them to learn and understand the culture of doing business wherever they're going. So for this winter, we sent students to Denmark, we sent students to Israel, and we sent students to Vietnam. So it's an opportunity to build their network and also it's an opportunity for them to engage in global teams.

The podcast explores the current state of ESG data, including why many companies are far away from “audit-quality financial data,” the wrinkles that upcoming government regulations may put into the data collection process, and the difficulties that come with categorizing Scope 3 emissions.

Frank Zambrelli, Executive Director of Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business' Responsible Business Coalition returns to the conversation to discuss how and why business should encourage the widespread adoption of regenerative agricultural practices. This low- and no-till, pesticide-free approach to farming can restore soil health, build new topsoil to replace what has been lost to run-off and wind, as well as provide food and raw materials with substantially lower environmental impacts than traditionally farmed alternatives. But the regenerative techniques must be widely adopted, even by industrial farming conglomerates to reach a scale that can help feed, clothe and supply society with sustainable raw materials. The power of regenerative agriculture as a restorative investment for the future lies in the fact that it can be put into practice relatively easily to improve crop yields and profits from the same amount of farmland in short order, just a few years, according to Frank. However, there is lag time between embracing environmentally responsible goals and seeing the results in the market. Frank points out that there will be many approaches to regeneration, which is essential to developing a diverse, sustainable agriculture for the future — both in the biological and social sense. The question is how we finance the transition and, as we heard, your spending sends a signal that can support regenerative investment. Look for the regenerative labels when shopping for this year's holiday gifts, including from The Textiles Exchange, Land to Market, Fashion for Good's Renewable Carbon Textiles Project. Frank Zambrelli, Executive Director of Fordham University's Gabelli School of Business Responsible Business Coalition, discusses the school's recommendations for sustainability and transparency in the fashion industry. He explains findings in Accenture's recently released a report, Scaling ESG Solutions in Fashion, which identified seven areas of focus required for sustainable changes to the fashion industry. They include industry-wide adoption of transparent emissions reductions goals of 50% by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2040, use of renewable energy in manufacturing, elimination of the use of restricted chemicals, and fair labor practices across every step of the fashion supply chain in order to turn the industry into a sustainable one.Fashion may make us look and feel good but it does no favors for the planet, accounting for up to 8% of global greenhouse gas emission annually and providing many examples of egregious treatment of labor in low-income countries. Frank also explains the intentions behind New York Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand's Fashion Accountability and Building Real Institutional Change Act, or FABRIC Act, which the U.S. Senate is currently considering. It would require moving fashion production back to the U.S. under better environmental and labor standards than other countries enforce. By sharing their real-life experiences in job search and interviews, we want to provide you with practical advice on how you can secure a job offer (no matter whether you're applying for your very first job after school or looking for the next move) and how managers can improve the hiring process to effectively identify talents at scale.Mindshare's 2nd Annual Advanced Analytics Hackathon as referenced in our episode: https://www.mindshareworld.com/usa/news/2nd-annual-advanced-analytics-hackathon/--------------------About Ikechi Okoronkwo: Ikechi is the Executive Director and Head of Business Intelligence and Analytics at Mindshare. Luckily, we can all do it by practicing consistently. While I'm incredibly grateful for my journey, I know firsthand how painful and lonely it is to go through tough times alone — it urges me to give back and help others as much as I can in my lifetime. The Round Table: A Next Generation Politics Podcast

At this week's Round Table, Inica, Jack, Jedd and Kenisha spoke with Chaitra Nagaraja, associate professor of strategy and statistics at the Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University. Chaitra loves statistics and how they can be applied to a variety of social issues to illuminate who we are and how we live in democracy together. She quoted James Madison's point that if we don't know about our population, how can we govern? Statistics can help tell us who we are and how we need to improve. They can also help us replicate models that can be used productively in creating policy. That said, Chaitra reminded us that every statistic has politics behind it and, unfortunately, policies based on statistics often aren't updated and thus don't reflect the evolution of society. We grappled with a quintessential challenge of statistics– their inability to take into account nuance and human variables. Chaitra feels this is best countered by reminding ourselves that nothing is objective and being cognizant of the decisions behind how to measure something. Understanding statistical principles, such as that correlation doesn't imply causation, are key to understanding various phenomena in our world. We agreed that melding data analysis and trend analysis with personal stories can be particularly powerful and illuminating. ❓ What is intentionality?❓ Why is intentionality powerful?❓ How can we use intentionality in our lives to achieve what we want?✅ In the first episode of this series, we are delighted to share with you an insightful conversation between our lovely Chief Quarterlife-crisis Officer (CQO), Zip Nguyen, and our very first special guest, Ikechi Okoronkwo, Executive Director, Managing Partner, Head of Business Intelligence & Analytics at Mindshare on the topic of intentionality. What is the definition of intentionality? Why is it so powerful? Join us to find out!--------------------About Ikechi Okoronkwo: Ikechi is the Executive Director and Head of Business Intelligence and Analytics at Mindshare. His contributions to the advertising industry were recognized in 2020 when he was selected by Adweek as a Media All-Star. Ikechi is also an adjunct faculty member at Fordham University, Gabelli School of Business and is very active with other academic institutions in the NY area through leadership workshops, seminars and case competitions. Bloom in Crisis is the embodiment of hope — it is a belief, a practice, a state of being that empowers you to skillfully regulate emotions, build spiritual resilience, enhance self-awareness, unleash the potential of your mind, foster a grateful heart, cultivate joy, nurture positive energy, promote inner peace, grow self-compassion and compassion for others, embrace the present moment, derive wisdom from introspection, transform pain into grace, recognize positive possibilities even in adversity, and actively shape your narrative, ultimately leading to a happy and fulfilled life (with a touch of style!)Welp... you're probably not going to remember all of these, and neither am I (!) which is why internalizing the concept of "bloom in crisis" instead of trying to memorize what it means is important. Luckily, we can all do it by practicing consistently. While I'm incredibly grateful for my journey, I know firsthand how painful and lonely it is to go through tough times alone — it urges me to give back and help others as much as I can in my lifetime. Bloom in Crisis has been transforming me and many others for the better, and I would love for you to give it a try!Believing that everyone is a bloomer and we #bloomincrisis together, I founded Bloom in Crisis to share with you how I practice it and what I've learned throughout my journey, which, I hope, will be helpful for you in yours.-Zip xx----------About Zip Nguyen: Zip was born and raised in Vietnam. When she was just under 18, she moved to the US for college and has been living there since. She started her first full-time job at New York Magazine then moved to the BBC at the end of 2019, currently leading Business Intelligence, Pricing & Yield in the Americas region in Ad Sales at BBC Studios. Besides her main job, she is also a BBC Senior Leadership Team Advisor alumnus and Deputy Chair of BBC Studios Next Generation Board alumnus. She finds fulfillment in giving back to the next generations and inspiring others to overcome challenging times. Zip is the founder and CQO (Chief Quarterlife-crisis Officer) of Bloom in Crisis, and host of the Bloom in Crisis podcast and YouTube channel (Zip's sharing reflects her original and independent thinking and does not represent the opinions of any other organizations that she is involved with.)----------

To say these are challenging economic times is an understatement. As Covid-19 vaccines are slowly being distributed, the promise of a revived economy seems closer than ever. Not so fast, though, as experts warn that life in the United States will probably not return to normal until the fall. And yet in spite of all of the uncertainty, entrepreneurs are still founding new companies. The Fordham Foundry, a business incubator based at the Gabelli School of Business, has continued to stage contests for burgeoning ideas. Its most recent one, the “Ram’s Den,” took place on February 6, and a second one, a pitch challenge geared toward less developed business plans, will take place on March 27. So what is life like for a small business owner these days? We sat down with Brandon Adamson, a Gabelli MBA graduate whose company Beauitmaps won the 2019 pitch challenge, and Ozzy Usman, a current EMBA student who won second place in this year's Ram's Den with his small business lending company Equiduct.

But the shift to having everything at your fingertips at the tap of an app hasn’t been without its bumps. Ride-sharing apps have been blamed for worsening traffic congestion, Amazon has been accused of subjecting its warehouse workers to brutal working conditions, and Airbnb has been a source of great debate in places like New York City. To learn more about online marketplaces today, we sat down with Apostolos Filippas, an assistant professor of information systems at the Gabelli School of Business.

Robin Colner Show Notes Robin Colner is an acclaimed digital and social media marketing strategist, university educator corporate trainer and MBA graduate of the Wharton School. After working for Fortune 100 companies, Robin founded DigiStar Media, a digital and social media marketing agency. DigiStar is dedicated to helping businesses and professionals leverage social media and digital marketing to engage prospects, attract new clients, amplify the impact of advertising and public relations campaigns and implement successful integrated marketing programs. Robin is also the founder and Director of Fordham University’s Digital and Social Media Certificate Program and the instructor for the social media marketing classes offered by Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business. Most passionate about I am running a digital and social media marketing firm: Digistar Media, digital and social media strategy and training firm. When you’re in this field, you can’t help but be passionate about it because I believe that everybody needs to have a foundation of information about this. There are many people in business today that feel it’s something they don’t want to pay attention to, or they want to give to a young person to pay attention to, or they wish they didn’t have to pay attention to it, or they’re overly hyped about it. So, what I like to do is make sure everybody, for age 20 – 120 are capable of understanding how they can leverage the channels without feeling like they are losing their privacy, that someone is learning too much about them, but being able to use them to reach their goals whether it’s a business goal or even a personal goal, or getting know or getting more visible or following their own passions and finding people that they can build a community with. I needed to find a niche, because I was a little older and not going to be necessarily hired by agencies since I was out of my 30s. So, I looked at the market, just like an entrepreneur would do, which let me see where there was a need that was not being met, and that need was the business owners over the age of 45 that were just beginning to understand how to get their websites developed and they hadn’t even thought about this stuff and they were totally overwhelmed. I’m perfect for that because I know the world they are coming from and I can help them along without it being intimidating. That’s when I set up my program, after that I had all these ideas for how I wanted to run classes and I can share that later. Robin’s best advice about approaching customers Entrepreneurial companies are usually born out of a need identified by its founder for a certain product, service, or technological solution. It’s best for a business to test its assumptions with possible customers or clients to validate their proof of concept. Too often, companies spend time and resources developing a product that’s really in search for a customer. In the technology space, I get calls every day from platforms because they want me to use their platform. There are hundreds of thousands of them build, little better mousetraps, we’ll call them, right? They don’t have the marketing know how, muscle, or money behind them to be the ones that people actually use because we still live in a world were people want to use the known quantities, the platforms that other people recommend, that they’ve heard about at conferences, that they’ve heard about in forums with their peers. So, it’s important to focus on the customer. Biggest failure with a customer It started with misreading one of my hires. I’d hired a young person to work directly with the client, the client was in the exercise space/fitness. The hire had a background in that, was a gym rat, and was really good at social media, and because I was building my business and I was so busy, I was building the program at FourDom and big business at the same time, I let her run with it without necessarily...

Well, most of you have made a decision about what college your kid is going to by now.  You all have sifted through the acceptances (hopefully, there was more than one), weighing all manner of things while making the decision.  However, I know there are still a few of you out there who have not quite decided yet.  I know because I talked to a mother just a few days ago who was in the throes of helping her daughter make her decision.  Our meeting was quite accidental; she was the physician’s assistant in the surgeon’s office where my daughter and I were contemplating my daughter’s emergency knee surgery.  As soon as the physician’s assistant found out what I did, after I had volunteered some unsolicited advice, she engaged me in a longer discussion of her daughter’s options.  I was happy for the distraction.     1. Here We Go Again  Her daughter had an array of options:  several okay acceptances, but not from truly selective colleges; an acceptance from Fordham University; and wait list spots at Wake Forest University and Colgate University.  The mother, I’ll call her Leeann, had planned to keep one of the okay colleges on the list, as her daughter pursued the wait list possibilities.  Leeann said that she and her daughter had not visited Fordham (although they live right here) because her daughter had hoped to go away to college and try something different from New York City.  Guess what I said?  It’s the advice we always give (and this is the third episode this month that we have given it in, so maybe we think it is really important):  Send your kid to the best college he or she got admitted to.  Period.  Wherever that college is and whatever it costs (to the degree that it is humanly possible).  That’s the college to choose.  The okay college that Leeann was keeping on her daughter’s list is not nearly as good as Fordham.  Yes, it is a college that, for some reason I cannot quite explain, has become popular here in the East, though it is in the South.  It is out of town, which was her daughter’s preference, and Leeann was worried that her daughter would come home every weekend if she stayed in New York City for college.  My daughter, who, as you loyal listeners know, went to Fordham for the joint dance program with The Ailey School of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, assured Leeann that her daughter would not be coming home every weekend because there was plenty of fun and engaging stuff to do on campus.  My daughter assured Leeann that she had had plenty of friends in Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business (where Leeann’s daughter would be heading) and that they had not gone home on the weekends. We continued to chat about the two wait list options--both very good options and both very unlike Fordham in location and size.  And both head and shoulders above that other only-okay option that Leeann had been keeping on the table.  When we left the surgeon’s office, Leeann had taken the only-okay college off the list and was headed home to talk to her daughter about taking a look at Fordham’s campus (which is quite lovely and self-contained, by the way, even if it is in the middle of the Bronx).  I can’t wait to hear the results.  It continues to puzzle me that so many parents do not seem to put the academic caliber of the college as the number one criterion for choosing among several colleges in the final analysis.  Perhaps it is because parents do not know how to judge the academic caliber of a college or how to compare colleges on that all-important criterion.   So, parents, do whatever it takes to figure out which of the colleges your kid got into is the “best” college.  And, by “best,” I mean best academically, according to its national reputation or, as a second choice, its regional reputation.  2. Some Support for Our Position While I don’t feel any real need for support for our position (other than the decades of life experience in the world of higher education we already have), I am always glad to get some.  The support I want to share with you now is from a study by Noli Brazil and Matthew Andersson, published in March in the Youth & Society journal.  The study was then reported on by Sarah Sparks in the Education Week blog Inside School Research.  This is absolutely not what I expected and, therefore, it is particularly interesting.  Here are Ms. Sparks’s opening paragraphs in her article: Even a high school valedictorian can feel anxious becoming just one out of hundreds of top performers at an academically competitive university. But a new study suggests that students who have lower-achieving classmates in college than they had in high school show more symptoms of depression. The study, published in the journal Youth and Society, finds [that,] . . . contrary to common wisdom, students with lower-achieving classmates in college had a rough freshman year. “When you think of it, a college transition is made of three parts: where you’re coming from, where you end up, and the difference between those things,” said study co-author Matthew Andersson, an assistant sociology professor at Baylor University, in a statement. He suggested increased depression may come because “the downward transition might trigger a sense of being a misfit. That might trigger having fewer friends or less of a sense of attachment to the college or university that one is attending.” Researchers from Baylor University and the University of California, Davis, tracked data from more than 1,400 high school students who later attended four-year colleges in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, which provides information about students’ mental health as well as their school-level achievement data. They controlled for students’ demographic, academic, and mental health backgrounds, but also school factors, such as whether students attended public or private schools, the concentration of students in poverty, and parent education levels in the schools. (quoted from the article) So, here are the statistics, in the words of the researchers themselves: We find that depressive symptoms increase by 27% for students experiencing lowered peer ability across their college transition, relative to no substantial change in peer ability. Meanwhile, heightened peer ability in college links to neither diminished nor enhanced student well-being across the transition. (quoted from the researchers’ Abstract) In other words, sending a bright kid who is accustomed to bright classmates in high school to a college that is filled with kids who are not as bright increases the odds that the bright kid will end up showing some signs of depression, for whatever reason.  Now, will it make that bright kid seriously and chronically depressed?  Not necessarily, but it can increase the chances that the bright kid will show some symptoms of depression.  Is that a chance you want to take, parents? This question is directed to the parents we talk to who are considering sending their son or daughter to an easier college in order to get good undergraduate grades in preparation for medical school or law school or some other graduate degree.  According to these researchers, that strategy--which we don’t agree with in the first place--could be especially harmful if that son or daughter is coming from an excellent high school with lots of smart kids or if that son or daughter is literally part of a group of smart kids in whatever high school he or she attends.  And it always seems that the parents who suggest this strategy are the ones who have been pushing their kids the hardest in high school to excel--which puts their kids in the worst spot for experiencing the kind of depression that the researchers are talking about. And here’s one more wrinkle, as Ms. Sparks reports: “[U]ndermatching,” in which high-achieving high school graduates choose a college less rigorous than their academic qualifications would predict, is often a particular problem for students from low-income or traditionally underrepresented groups or first-generation college-goers. Prior studies have found that students who are undermatched in college are significantly less likely to complete a degree. (quoted from the article) So, here’s one more reason that low-income, traditionally underrepresented, first-generation-to-college kids are having a tough time making the leap into the collegiate education that they deserve.  It’s bad enough that they might exhibit signs of depression more often than they otherwise would have; but, you have to wonder whether that alone could make it less likely for them to complete a degree. This study, like all studies, had some limitations.  For example, all of the students included in the study attended four-year colleges, so these findings do not necessarily apply to students attending two-year colleges.  That could be an interesting future inquiry since I believe that lots of good students attending two-year colleges are undermatched in an effort by families to save money during those first two years of college.  This new study should make you think about that. Ms. Sparks ends on a note to high schools, commenting that “. . . the study suggests schools could help their students think more optimistically about how well they would fit at academically competitive schools” (quoted from the article).  That advice could be to counselors and teachers as students make up the list of colleges they plan to apply to or that advice could be to counselors and teachers who might be in a position to influence a student’s choice of a college after the acceptances come in.  Certainly, in the second case, we would hope that counselors and teachers do exactly what we do here at USACollegeChat--which is to encourage kids to see themselves at the best college they got into, to surround themselves with students who are as smart as possible, and to adopt the study habits and work ethic of successful college students. By the way, parents, this does not mean that only the best 40 or 50 colleges in the U.S. are suitable for providing high-achieving peers for your son or daughter.  There are plenty of great public flagship universities, small liberal arts colleges, and private universities in addition to the highest-ranked institutions.  There are plenty of great colleges where the other students will have a positive effect on your son and daughter.  That is what academically rigorous colleges are like.  That is what the “best” colleges are like. So, I promise that this is our last episode on this topic for this year--as long as you agree to send your kid to the best college he or she got into.  That’s why you all have worked so hard for so long.  If you are trying to make a decision right now and need some advice, give me a call.  As we always say, it’s free, so you don’t have to take it.  Let’s chat.
