Off the top of your head, where do reckon the Wallabies currently sit in the World rankings?   Sure, they're behind us. They're behind South Africa, of course. But they're also languishing behind Scotland, behind Italy, would you believe.  According to World Rugby, the Wallabies of September 2024 are the ninth best national team in men's rugby today. They only just squeak in ahead of Fiji.  When I was a kid, the Bledisloe felt like the biggest thing in rugby outside of a World Cup. It probably wasn't, of course. Tests with South Africa were at least comparable, I guess, and Lions tours had their prestige. But I would get so worked up for Bledisloes because they always felt like anyone could win.   I still remember epic Bledisloe clashes. The John Eales era. George Gregan and that tackle, Jeff Wilson spilling the ball as he dived for the line, the Wallabies just holding on for Bledisloe glory.  But what happened? New Zealand Rugby's had its issues, but arguably no country that plays rugby has experienced anything like the decline that Australia has experienced. Those epic Bledisloe clashes of the past are becoming ancient history. It's 22 years since Australia last held the Bledisloe - we now have an elected Member of Parliament who has never seen the Wallabies win it.   And get this: according to the Australian Sports Commission, rugby is the country's ninth-most-popular sport by participation. Aussie Rules has four times as many kids who play. Basketball is five times more popular. Rugby loses out to rock climbing and badminton.   There are a range of things that have likely contributed. The private school rugby culture in Australia has isolated the sport from a huge slab of the population. Concern over head knocks will have impacted participation. The domestic rugby competition was hollowed out and ultimately scrapped, which means the Super Rugby teams are the only real professional options for young players. The AFL has 18 teams. The NRL has 16 Australian teams. Super Rugby will now have just four. It's telling that a city of five million couldn't sustain a side. How many people in Melbourne didn't even know the Rebels were a thing? And as a TV entertainment product, sorry, but the Brumbies vs the Force rarely compares to the thrill of the NRL.  All of this is not to diminish this evening's game. And I'm certainly not hoping for a Wallabies win. But ultimately, it's in our interests for Australian rugby to somehow work its way back into something akin to the force of the past. New Zealand rugby needs better competition from across the ditch. We need the spectre of potentially losing the Bledisloe! Maybe I'll eat my words, but as much as I'll enjoy the game this evening, right now... it doesn't feel like all that much of a contest. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The CSIRO and Australian Sports Commission have released a report on the mistrust among elite athletes about increasingly detailed data collection.  The international sport data analytics market is worth $2.6 billion, raising the question of who owns the data? Dr Peter Brukner, Professor of Sports Medicine at La Trobe University in Melbourne and former Australian Cricket team doctor told Jo McManus that there is no answer to that question. "There is a massive amount of data being collected in all types of sports and that's just blown out in the last 10 years or so," he told Jo. "The issue arises of who owns that data - if you're a professional football club and want to sell a player, who has access to that data? The potential purchaser? The player? It is an absolute minefield." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He's still a competitive athlete today — a world's masters silver medalist in the 800 metres, and is currently training for a marathon. In this episode, we wanted to explore the idea of sporty parents, active kids (PDF) as per research from the Sports Australia, formerly the Australian Sports Commission , that shows active parents are more likely to have active kids.Gary is the perfect fit — a coach and father of two — in an interesting conversation that covers being a role model as a parent and coach, as well as the benefits of parents getting ONBOARD in kids sport. … and we throw open the discussion to what fires us up!Plus, the three of us share our views on some of the topics that irk us in sport. And, what's the Johnny push up?

Carol is also internationally qualified in Neuro Linguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Matrix Therapies and as a celebrant. Further background as Victoria's first professional female surf lifesaver, a state-level swimmer and water-polo player, coaching and even competing against men in ironman competitions has given Carol invaluable insight into the mentality required to be a leader that translates to general life and business. THE ART OF HIGH PERFORMANCE If you’ve ever been involved in Australian netball or any female sport in South Australia, then you’ll be no stranger to this week’s guest, the relentless Jane Woodlands-Thompson. Jane is the only dual premiership coach (now former) in the history of the ANZ Championship netball competition, has studied High Performance with the Australian Sports Commission and is the current Head of High Performance at Westminster School. Jane’s specific essay question was: “After more than ten years dealing with the most elite netballers, in arguably the best netballing nation in the world; a scholarship to study High Performance at the Sports Commission; and now, Head of High Performance at Westminster School, you have lived High Performance at all ends of the spectrum. What is your definition of a High Performer? And are they brought about by Nature or Nurture?” Jane I spoke of her own experiences with family, her current role and the necessity for improved planning. We discussed stories of failure, recovery and triumph among her years with the Adelaide Thunderbirds. And best of all, I was given a straight to point, narrow view of what it takes to be a high performer – zero frills, just the way we like it. While I was at the Our Sporting Future Conference I managed to catch up with Andrew Ramsay, Director for Sport Insights and Government Relations with the Australian Sports Commission. We had a great chat that covered a number of areas from management of staff to the new Play.Sport.Australia. policy document from the ASC. At the recent Our Sporting Future conference run by the Australian Sports Commission, I tried to catch up with one of the organisers, Tim Arnold. Tim was very busy during the conference but luckily we were able to catch up this week over the phone (so I apologise for the difference in sound quality!). I highly encourage any sport administrators to attend the next conference in 2017. Conference website: www.oursportingfuture.com Australian Sports Commission website: www.ausport.gov.au
