In the end, shouldn't analyst relations service customers better? Shouldn't enterprise analysts advocate for customer concerns? After discussing CIO pitfalls/opportunities with Tim Crawford of AVOA, we pick up in this podcast with a spirited discussion of the future of analyst relations - with a vigorous chat of experts keeping us on track. This was not always an easy talk, getting into issues of independence and disclosure, but these are important topics in the analyst industry. Note 1: Crawford's response to this was sparked by Jon's post on next-gen analyst relations: https://diginomica.com/what-does-next-gen-analyst-relations-look-and-why-should-customers-care. We've been friends for years, and it's great to get you on today! We will discuss everything at the top of CIOs' minds today. Why don't you give everyone a quick background on how you became known as the CIO Advisor?Topic 2 - Before we go into trends over the last few years. Put everyone in a CIO mindset. What do they care about? How do they think about the intersection of technology and business? What keeps them up at night?Topic 3 - We've heard many times CIOs have to balance two things: keeping the lights on (the boring side of the business that is often undifferentiated, and the innovative side that often moves the needle. A CIO's job is to minimize the former and maximize the latter. Do you agree? How accurate is that statement? Topic 4 - I'll follow that up with a real-world example many organizations might be facing, one we've discussed on the show in the past. We'll discuss VMware on one end of the stable, the keep the lights on model, and AI on the other end as an innovative technology that could differentiate. Let's talk about VMware first… Topic 4b  - Now the other end of the spectrum, AI. Have we reached peak AI washing and craziness? Is the trough of disillusionment coming? How should a CIO think about it?Topic 5 - Let's talk about economics over the last few years. Zero-interest money has gone away for VCs and startups and we are seeing some big changes on the vendor side. How does this impact the people you talk to?Topic 6 -  Last topic, you were there and talked about Hashicorp when they rang the bell last week and then were bought 24 hours later. How should CIOs be thinking about implementing generative AI? What does it mean to be a sustainable business? What are offices for? In this episode, host Yadin Porter de León  sits down with Tim Crawford, CIO Strategic Advisor at AVOA, to discuss these questions in depth. They dive into the conversations that Tim is having with CIOs about generative AI and the nuances surrounding the debates around work-from-home.---------Key Quotes:“We've been challenged for data scientists within our organization. Generative AI just takes that to the next level. And so the problem is, we don't even have the resources internally to be able to get our arms around it.”“And that's part of what is scaring IT executives today is that they got burned on cloud. And now we're talking about generative AI. And now, unfortunately, we're talking more about data and the risks just went up. So you have to be really careful about how you go down this. I realize the pressures there. I realize there's a lot of demand to try and adopt it and get ahead of your competition. But at the same time, if you don't think about the risks that go with it and have a healthy balance between benefit and risk, you're just playing with fire.”---------Time stamps:(02:40) What are tech leaders saying about AI?(06:22) The need for increased understanding so we can trust AI tools (07:01) Generative AI increases the demand for data scientists (11:58) How the EU is thinking about generative AI(14:47) Lessons we can learn from implementing cloud technologies (17:01) AI as augmentation instead of replacement (19:02) The need for a holistic conversation (20:16) Running a sustainable business, beyond just ESG(25:21) The overuse of the “Black Swan” concept (27:43) How to plan for risks to build a sustainable business(32:54) The need for an IT leader who is capable of CEO-level conversations (34:55) What is the office for? (40:42) The new complications of in-office work --------Links:Tim Crawford on LinkedInCIO Exchange on TwitterYadin Porter de León on TwitterRelevant Past Episodes: Data Democratization and the “Intelligence Era” with Trevor Schulze, CIO of Alteryx Generative AI: What CIOs Need to Know – with Paul Roetzer, CEO of Marketing AI Institute [Subscribe to the Podcast] On Apple PodcastFor more podcasts, video and in-depth research go to https://www.vmware.com/cio

Time for a slightly different 'A View on Access', as normally we would be heading to the theatre, but today we're off to a new immersive Art Exhibition.  Tim Calvert tells us all about Van Gogh Alive, which was just ended a spell in the Birmingham Hippodrome, can currently be enjoyed in Kensington Gardens in London, and later this year will be taking residency at MediaCity UK, in the Salford Quays. Having dazzled over 8 million visitors in 70 cities worldwide, the most visited immersive, multi-sensory experience in the world has made its hotly anticipated debut in the heart of one of London's most beautiful Royal Parks for a four month run. Hosted within a stunning, purpose-built venue in Kensington Gardens (opposite the Royal Albert Hall) from June to September, this Covid-safe and family-friendly experience is anticipated to become London's biggest visitor attraction this summer.

Golden suggests cloud adoption today is, to use a baseball analogy, in the second inning, with many changes still to come. Among the topics they cover as part of this debate are edge computing, private cloud, Kubernetes and the opportunities for large cloud providers to expand their presence.
