Cursed Games and Rituals: Part 5This week, we explore three eerie cursed games that blur the line between ritual and entertainment. We first discuss the Binoculars Game (also known as Eye Spy), where participants must secure a friend with rope while searching for a mysterious approaching figure through windows.Next, we delve into Cat Scratch, a seemingly innocent party game where one person lies with their head in another's lap while hearing a creepy story, potentially resulting in unexplained scratch marks appearing on their back.We also discuss the Witch's Window ritual, which involves setting up a mirror with candles and salt to communicate with spirits from the beyond. This particular game requires specific safety precautions to ensure you're only creating a "window" rather than a "door" for entities to pass through. As with all our cursed games episodes, we emphasize that while these rituals might seem far-fetched, we don't endorse trying them yourself - the line between skepticism and genuine paranormal experience often blurs when you're sitting alone in the dark, following strange instructions that might invite something unexpected into your world.Patreon: Support Believing the Bizarre and get tons of extra content by joining our Patreon. For updates, news, and extra content, follow Believing the Bizarre on social media:InstagramFacebookTwitterDiscordShop Merch: You can rep Believing the Bizarre and buy some unique merchWant to send BTB something? It might seem hard to lose a star cluster. But that’s what happened with Messier 48. It was cataloged by French astronomer Charles Messier in 1771. When other astronomers looked for it, though, they couldn’t find it. In the early 1780s, Johann Bode and Caroline Herschel did see a cluster five degrees from the position that Messier reported. So they sometimes get credit for the discovery. What all of these folks actually discovered was the nature of the cluster. Under especially dark skies, it’s visible to the eye alone as a faint smudge of light, so people had always known it was there. But the telescope showed that the smudge consisted of many individual stars. Today, we know that M48 contains hundreds of stars. They’re packed into a loose ball that spans about 125 light-years. Most of the stars congregate near the center of that ball, which is the part that’s visible to the eye alone. The stars near the edge of the cluster are being pulled away by the gravity of the rest of the galaxy. Someday, those stars will leave the cluster and head off on their own. M48 is 2500 light-years away. That makes it one of the most distant clusters of its type that’s visible to the eye. As night falls, it’s high in the southern sky. It’s well to the upper left of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Binoculars reveal some of the individual stars of M48 – a cluster that got lost. Script by Damond Benningfield
Introduction In the evolving landscape of optometry, behavioral binocular vision (BV) experts play a crucial role in reshaping how eye care professionals approach vision-related challenges. Traditional optometry has long focused on visual acuity, prescribing glasses and contact lenses to correct refractive errors. However, BV experts look beyond clarity of vision, addressing the underlying binocular dysfunctions […]
What if you were told that what you learned in optometry school was wrong? What if you learned about ways to treat your patients that not only different, but sometimes the opposite of what your training has taught you? Would you be open to these new ways? Would you be skeptical?Dr. Amrit Bilkhu is a residency trained, behavioural Optometrist based in Toronto who specializes in pediatrics, binocular vision disorders, and visual processing challenges. The area of behavioural binocular vision takes into account many of a patient's past health and developmental issues/milestones when developing a treatment plan. Amrit calls this holistic approach to vision Functional Optometry. In this episode, we explore Dr. Bilkhu's journey from being a new grad to specializing in BV to opening her own private practice. The part of the discussion that really sets this episode apart is our dive into the BV world. Much of what BV docs do seems to be a bit of mystery to majority of the eyecare world. Is this deliberate or is it an accidental result of poor communication? It turns out that its a bit of both. This episode will change the way you look at binocular vision, how it can help our patients, and how it can be more accessible to all of us.Learn more about Dr. Bilkhu's Pediatric Eye Care Masterclass: https://dramritbilkhu.thinkific.com/products/courses/pediatric-eye-care-masterclassLaunching Wednesday March 12th Save $100 on registration with code: READYSETSEE Connect with Amrit:Instagram.com/dr.amritbilkhuLove the show? Yo, fam, there's a straight-up blood moon droppin' tomorrow, March 13, 2025, and it's gonna be bussin'! This ain't no mid lunar vibe—Earth's shadow's gonna yeet the moon into a red glow for 65 minutes, peakin' at 2:59 a.m. EDT. North America's got the VIP pass, but if you're West Coast, it's poppin' off at 11:26 p.m. PDT. No cap, it's the first total lunar eclipse since 2022, and it's lowkey a big deal. The moon's gonna be extra—like, Worm Moon meets Blood Moon energy, all because the sun's rays get filtered through Earth's atmosphere, turnin' it red like a TikTok glow-up. You don't need drip or fancy gear to peep it—just vibe outside with clear skies. Binoculars? Slay. Telescope? Chef's kiss. But even naked eyes are valid for this sigma event. If you're tryna lock in, totality's the main character moment—stars might even pop off around it. East Coast, you're up late at 2:26 a.m.; Hawaii, you're chillin' at 8:26 p.m. Weather's the only opp—clouds could ratio your view, so pray for W skies. Europe's cooked tho, barely catchin' it before moonset. This ain't just cap—it's a flex from nature, first of three blood moons by 2026. Christopher Columbus once used one to rizz up some locals in 1504, so it's got lore. Don't snooze on this—set your alarm, grab some munchies, and vibe check the night sky. It's goated, fr fr.
Classic 2 man comin right up. the other mic came in, word. what an ep. spoke of dirtbikes, space, doge, America, 4 way stops, and whatnot. We'll be back
Most of the little moons of Jupiter and Saturn are oddballs. Their orbits are stretched out and tilted at odd angles. And some of them orbit in the opposite direction from the planets’ major moons. A study last year proposed that Jupiter and Saturn captured those moons thanks to a passing star. Researchers used computers to study the orbits of many objects in the Kuiper Belt – a broad region beyond the realm of the planets. Many of their orbits are odd as well. The work showed that all of those orbits could be explained by a close approach by a star billions of years ago. The star would have been a little less massive than the Sun. And it would have passed about 10 billion miles from the Sun – a bit more than a hundred times the distance from Earth to the Sun. That would have taken the star near the edge of the Kuiper Belt. The star’s gravity would have stirred up the millions of objects in that region – chunks of ice and rock that can be quite large. In fact, the largest member of the belt is Pluto. Many objects were kicked out of the solar system. But others would have been kicked toward the Sun. Some of them might have been captured by the giant outer planets – especially Jupiter and Saturn – giving both worlds big entourages of odd moons. Jupiter itself is high in the sky at nightfall. It looks like a brilliant star. Binoculars reveal its large moons – but the odd little ones remain hidden. Script by Damond Benningfield

The Moon probably was born when the young Earth was hit by another planet. That blasted a lot of debris into space. Much of it came together to form the Moon. But Earth wasn’t the only world to get smacked around in the early solar system. One of the others might have been Ganymede, the largest moon of Jupiter. A recent study suggested that a giant asteroid slammed into it, making it wobble for a thousand years. Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system – bigger than the planet Mercury. It probably has an ocean of liquid water below its icy crust. The ocean might be 60 miles deep, and hold more water than all of Earth’s oceans combined. The new study looked at some long ripples on the surface, the way Ganymede spins, and other evidence. Researchers then used computer models to simulate Ganymede’s history. Their work suggested that Ganymede was hit by an asteroid about four billion years ago. The asteroid was almost 200 miles in diameter, and hit near the north pole. That caused Ganymede to wobble. Eventually, it flipped over on its side. What had been the equator became the poles as Ganymede settled down after a massive impact. Jupiter is close to our moon at nightfall. It looks like a brilliant star. Aldebaran, the brightest star of Taurus, is to the lower right of Jupiter. Binoculars reveal Jupiter’s four big moons, including Ganymede – a world that might have suffered a “big whack” billions of years ago. Script by Damond Benningfield

Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa's cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I've photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I've tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that's the essential thing. Chris McKleroy, Founder and CEO of NOCS Provisions joins host AJ Eads to talk about his background in the outdoors and the events that lead him to starting a Binoculars company that is shaking up the industry. NOCS Provisions got its start in the Bay Area of Northern California and now operates near the outdoor haven of Lake Tahoe. Chris and the team have taken a very different approach to most of today's product companies and grown the business organically with their own cash flow, as opposed to the massive investments of private equity and venture capital companies. This has allowed the business to stay true to its mission of connecting their customers with the outdoors and reducing the waste that is typical with most retailers today. This was a really insightful conversation and Chris really helped me understand what an ethical company can do to make an impact on the world. Enjoy.
If scientists took bets on where we might find life elsewhere in the solar system, the odds-on favorite almost certainly would be Europa, one of the large moons of Jupiter. It appears to have all the ingredients for life: water, energy, and chemistry. Europa is a bit smaller than our own moon. And it’s a bit farther from Jupiter than the Moon is from Earth. Most intriguingly, it appears to have an ocean of liquid water below its surface. The ocean could be dozens of miles deep, and contain more than twice as much water as all the oceans on Earth combined. Europa is locked in by Jupiter’s gravity so the same hemisphere of Europa always faces the giant planet. But as Jupiter’s other big moons move past Europa, they tug at it. That stretches and squeezes Europa’s interior, heating it up. There appears to be enough heat to melt some of the ice below the surface, creating the ocean. There could be “vents” of hot water on the ocean floor. They’d provide both energy and minerals. Added to the water, that gives Europa all the major ingredients for microscopic life. That doesn’t mean there is life on Europa – only that it’s the most likely place to find it elsewhere in the solar system. Look for Jupiter climbing into good view in the eastern sky by about 11 p.m. It looks like a bright star, so you can’t miss it. Binoculars will reveal its four largest moons, including Europa. We’ll have more about Europa tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

In 2014 she won a pair of binoculars in the Digiscoper of the Year competition run by Swarovski. Using the binoculars stoked Sandra's enthusiasm for sharing views of the local birds with her friends. From there, Sandra's engagement with the wider community led to an initiative with local leaders to promote eco-tourism alongside conservation efforts in the cloud forest in the Quijos Valley. Michaela tells us of the part Swarovski plays in supporting conservation efforts around the world. We also hear how Sandra and Michaela would spend a fantasy birding day.
