CatCon 2018 & Amazon Conference CatCon 2018 drew a record 16,400 attendees, flocking from 45 states and 11 countries to the 2-day annual convention in Pasadena, CA to meet and greet with an expanded and influential feline and human talent roster including Chris Poole, (our former videographer who went on to start his own feline phenomenon with Cole & Marmalade) who shared a booth with us.   CatCon is the biggest experience in the world dedicated to cats and pop culture. The annual event, which informs, educates, and entertains thousands of feline fans with the latest in groundbreaking and innovative products and ideas for cats and their people, attracts top talent from the worlds of television, film, and entertainment.  We went there to make sure that cat lovers know they can protect big cats too by making a call to Congress asking them to pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act.   Callers quadrupled our impact on Congress each day of the event and there was a lift in calls in the days that followed.  We gave away 600 virtual reality viewers so that people can experience our 360 videos in a headset.  There is just no comparison to using a headset to see our 360 video and we want people to be able to have that “Wow!” experience.  It's the first step to showing how a virtual visit with a wild cat is so much more engaging than seeing one languishing in a cage.   We are continuing to pursue ways that we can get members of Congress and their aids to see the plight of big cats in a headset because it is a distraction free way of bringing the viewer into the cat's world in a personal way they've never experienced before.  We are also looking for ways to bring this technology into schools, hospitals and nursing homes.  If we can show zoos that they can continue to operate, using their facilities and fan base, without harming wild animals, we can make the world a kinder place.   After Cat Con I hopped a plane to Seattle, WA because Amazon had asked me to speak on a panel about how we use social networking.  My panel consisted of Brian Boland, a VP from Facebook & Instagram, Zach Peacock, the Social Creative Strategist from Amazon, & Cubby and Amy from Charity Water.  I was totally surprised, the following day, when Piers-Heaton Armstrong, the VP of Amazon Affiliate Marketing, got up to speak and began talking about how Big Cat Rescue was “punching above its weight” by earning huge revenues in the Smile program with only a small staff and limited resources.  The only other charity that he mentioned was Charity Water.  It made me so proud to know our fans care enough to use Smile.Amazon.com when they shop.   There were several break out sessions and I kept hearing from other charities that their supporters just didn't understand how Smile works.  While they would sign up, they couldn't remember to go to Smile.Amazon.com so none of their shopping was counting.  It really made me glad that Howie created such good instructions for our members.  In case you need them go to: https://bigcatrescue.org/amazon-smile/   Right now the Smile program has raised about 89,000 of the 89 million that Amazon has donated to all charities.  We love the partnership with Amazon and appreciate that they have welcomed Big Cat Rescue into their first 120 charities that are allowed to raise money on Alexa devices.  All you have to do is say, “Alexa, make a donation to Big Cat Rescue” and she will guide you through the rest.   On that note, you can do more with us on your Echo devices.  Just say, “Alexa, open big cat” and you will hear what we are sharing to educate people about the cruelty of cub petting.  In your Alexa app, search for Big Cat Briefing and when you add it, you can get a 1 minute summary of the news of the day at the sanctuary in your daily briefing by just asking, “Alexa, what's the news?”   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/   I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.     You can help feed the cats at no cost to you using Amazon Smile! Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen and other activists have urged the social networking giant to release a long-awaited report on its impact in India, alleging the company is purposely obscuring human rights concerns, The Guardian reports. Meanwhile, a US Senate panel backed a bill that proposes some curbs on Big Tech. And in startup news, blockchain venture Stader has raised more money, at a hefty valuation. Facebook urged to release the report on its impact in India Former Facebook employee Frances Haugen and other prominent whistleblowers have renewed calls for Facebook to release a long-awaited report on its impact in India, alleging the company is purposely obscuring human rights concerns, The Guardian reports. More than 20 organisations on Wednesday joined whistleblowers Frances Haugen and Sophie Zhang, as well as former Facebook vice-president Brian Boland, to demand the company, now called Meta, release its findings. Meta had commissioned law firm Foley Hoag in 2020 to carry out an independent review of its impact in India—the company's largest market at 340 million users—but its release has repeatedly been delayed, activists allege. US Senate panel votes in favour of bill curbing Big Tech A Senate panel approved antitrust legislation forbidding the largest tech platforms from favouring their own products and services over competitors', Wall Street Journal reports. The American Innovation and Choice Online Act moves next to the Senate floor. A second bill, which was held over, would bar big app stores, like Apple's, from forcing app providers to use their payment system, and prohibit them from punishing apps that offer different prices through another app store or payment system, Reuters reported. Stader Labs, blockchain and crypto startup, valued at $450 million Stader Labs, a blockchain crypto startup in Bangalore, has raised $12.5 million in a strategic private sale that values the company at up to $450 million, the company said in a press release. The sale was led by Three Arrow Capital with several other VC firms, including Accel, and angel investors joining in. Stader had previously raised $4 million from Pantera, Coinbase Ventures and others. Tom Cruise movie producers in a deal to put a studio in space Producers of a Tom Cruise film, set in space, are planning to launch the world's first movie studio connected to the International Space Station, Business Insider reports. Elena and Dmitry Lesnevsky, the movie producers, announced on Thursday that they've signed a deal to build a fully operational movie studio connected to the International Space Station. The studio, Space Entertainment Enterprise-1 (SEE-1), is slated to launch in December 2024 and will be the world's first functional entertainment and content studio in space, according to Business Insider. SEE-1 will be developed in partnership with Axiom Space, a Huston-based space infrastructure developer and the company behind the world's first commercial space station, Axiom Station. Once it's ready for launch, the studio will dock with Axiom Station, which is currently attached to the ISS. Theme music courtesy Free Music & Sounds https://soundcloud.com/freemusicandsounds

In this episode, Adam sits down and chats with Paul Stumpf. Paul Stumpf has been building, flying and maintaining balloons for over 40 years. He is one of the best known repairmen in the US and is based out of the North East USA in the state of Vermont. Paul's business Stumpf Balloons is best known to the wider ballooning community for its revolutionary Mail Order Catalogue which was extremely popular through the 80’s and 90’s providing bespoke balloon accessories to its customers. Paul's passion for photography led him to cross paths with his now long time Mentor, Brian Boland while in high school in the early 70’s and the rest, as they say, is History. Paul build his first balloon when he was 17, right when the ballooning scene was starting to mature in the USA. After finishing his Fine Arts degree at University and still hoping to become a photographer his life took a different turn and he became a full-time balloonist, and the two passions have never left him. In 1982 he opened his repair station and with this, his ride business, the mail order catalogue and the enormous growth of ballooning through the USA in the 1980’s, he was a very busy guy. Over the past 10 years Paul has gone back on his original entry point into ballooning by focussing on making balloons again. His experience and skill are well used in building ultralight, compact balloons for his customers and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the ultra-light field.

This week we're chatting with lifelong nerd, designer of everything at Jordandene, and my husband Joey Ellis. In addition to doing all of the hand-lettering, branding, and design work at Jordandene, Joey and his two partners run the agency GrandArmy. They've done lots of cool design work (does the lettering in Taco Bell's Live Mas look familiar?), and people have even gotten tattoos of some of their branding projects.   Joey has been a pretty big nerd for his entire life, carrying his comic books, drawings, and action figures around in a briefcase as an elementary school kid (because Bruce Wayne did it). He always loved Batman the most, starting with Batman: The Animated Series. He didn't have any superpowers and became the best through hard work, determination, and, you know, a lot of money.   The world of Batman is overwhelming, so Joey put together a list of animated movies and graphic novels that someone new to the world could easily jump into. Or, you could watch the Lego Batman movie, which is just a real treat all around.   Thanks again for hanging out with us, and please help show your support by subscribing, leaving a review, or checking out our Patreon at www.patreon.com/sartorialgeek.   Stay nerdy. Batman Animated Movies for Newbies: - Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (A prequel to The Animated Series, which is one of the best on-screen versions of Batman) - Batman: Year One - Batman: Gotham Knight (A collection of shorts by a group of anime creators) - Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (Set very far into the future of The Animated Series continuity. Very dark) - Batman: Under the Red Hood - Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (Part 1 & 2)   Batman Graphic Novels & Trade Paperbacks for Newbies: - Batman: Year One (Frank Miller's update to Batman's origin story.) - Batman: The Long Halloween (Another early days story that introduced the Falcone crime family later seen in Nolan's Batman Begins. Also shows Harvey Dent's transformation into Two Face) - Batman The Dark Knight Returns (Frank Miller's take on an aging, messed up Bruce Wayne dealing with an increasingly bizarre, violent future) - Joker (Lee Bermejo's take on the Joker. Super brutal. Super violent. Was a huge influence on The Dark Knight's depiction of the Joker.) - Batman: Noel (A sequel of sorts to Joker - Bermejo's take on A Christmas Carol through a Gotham City lens) - The Killing Joke (Alan Moore explores Batman's complex relationship with the Joker. Amazing art by Brian Boland. Also tells the story of how Barbara Gordon loses her ability to walk, which starts her on the path to becoming Oracle.) - Batman Vol. 1-9 (Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's recent iconic run on Batman) Join our Patreon for bonus gifts and content!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/sartorial-geek. On Episode 34 of TFP, I had the honor of speaking with Brian Boland, Coach of the 2013, 2015, and 2016 NCAA Division I Championship University of Virginia Men's Tennis program. Coach Boland shows us how we can produce better leaders and human beings through college tennis. This approach is ultimately what determines whether coaches and players are truly successful in life. Coach Boland's approach of focusing on developing his players have resulted in incredible accomplishments, both on and off the court. Virginia Men's Tennis has been ranked in the top five of the ITA’s final rankings in 8 of the past 10 seasons, and they've also won 5 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, 14 conference championships and 18 NCAA and ITA individual national championships. What is so striking about Coach Boland is that he doesn't focus on the results so much as the development of his players. That his favorite moment at Virginia Men's Tennis has been attending weddings of his players, rather than winning titles, speaks volumes about his values. Coach Boland was also the very first contributor to one of my most popular articles, 30 College Tennis Coaches Reveal Top Character Traits of Successful Student-Athletes.
