Song: Somebody's Calling My Name Use: Hymn Song In Public Domain Song by: Dr. C.J. JohnsonIntro by: Gail NoblesToday's topic is Dr. CJ Johnson, a gospel music singing preacher and pastor. Claude Joseph Johnson is his name. He was born on May 16, 1913, in Douglasville, Georgia, the son of Will and Cora Reid Johnson. The family moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1916. His mother died when he was young, and he with his elder and younger sister were raised by his paternal grandmother, Sarah Farley Johnson. His father, Will, was a shape note teacher in Georgia in the 1920s and 1930s.He first acted as pastor at the age of 12 at the Antioch Baptist Church in Barnesville, Georgia. He was pastor in 14 churches, including his own foundation of the St Joseph's Missionary Baptist Church. Although Johnson had been active in Georgia since his early years, he only gained wider prominence from 1964, when he came to the attention of Fred Mendelsohn, then executive producer at Savoy Records. He recorded at least 20 albums, all of which were recorded in his church rather than in a recording studio.Although most of his recorded songs are traditional, 26 are listed as his own compositions. His 1970 recording of "I Wanna Go Where Jesus Is" was a gold-selling record.I love the way Johnson sings Hush! Hush! Somebody's Calling My Name. From the 1966 album Dr. C.J. Johnson The Old Time Song Service. They didn't have music.Just handclaps, the choir, and Johnson singing. Johnson was saying I'm so glad troubles don't last always and I'm so glad I got my religion in time. Every time I hear him sing and get to the end of each line of the song, I think to myself carry-on carry-on. When you get caught up in what he's singing, it makes you patient enough to listen no matter how long the song is. I listen and agree to the end of the song. You're listening to the Gospel Greats. I'm Gail Nobles. Today's topic: Dr. CJ Johnson.

PUG JOHNSON AND THE HOUNDSAMERICANAPug Johnson and The Hounds hail from the Golden Triangle region of Southeast Texas, and their sound reflects the blend of musical influences that have converged there. Johnson met Southpaw Smitty in 2017 who took it upon himself to form a band for the young writer in early 2018. The original lineup featured Chris Webb on drums, Zach Edd on bass, and Southpaw on guitar, mandolin, and banjo. The band began learning the list of songs that Johnson had written since the dismantling of his first project Slow Rollin' Lows as well as the list of covers that he had reimagined into his own arrangements. That same year, the band went into Four Eyes Studios in Beaumont, TX and recorded their first single “Calling My Name” under the guidance of producer/engineer Ryan Johnson. The following year, The Hounds would revisit Four Eyes twice more to record “Johnny” and “Back to Austin.” 2019 also found the Hounds adding drummer Chris Cropper and trombonist Andrew Rhoads to the lineup. In the shit show that was 2020, the Hounds were unable to be as active as anticipated and yielded only one single in October of that year with “Coyote Ken Tucky and the Navajo Bucky and Their Perilous Journey Through Corsicana, TX in the Year of our Lord Two Thousand Eighteen.” This release gave listeners a glimpse into the humor that lives and breathes within the band as well as highlighted their varying musical influences.https://open.spotify.com/artist/7Jrh16v5jTLnomhJCDH1CU?si=gWtKacZvTiq91s-K03WknQhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/pug-johnson-and-the-hounds/1441089659https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6jL9NPzhCKCxYqxhfdsimghttps://www.facebook.com/PugJohnsonandTheHoundshttps://www.pandora.com/artist/pug-johnson-and-the-hounds/ARJ29ZccwnXn6lJ

As the final seconds wound down in Game 6 of the NBA Finals between the Warriors and Celtics, Stephen Curry crouched down on the baseline and placed his head in his hands. At center court, Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole shared a long embrace. On the left side of the court, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala exchanged several high-fives before going in for a hug. Golden State was just two seconds away from clinching its fourth NBA title in the past eight years with Thursday's 103-90 victory. A sizable amount of fans are confused by Drake's new album Honestly, Nevermind. Many expected a rap project, but Drizzy's offering instead explores a wide swath of dance music, including Jersey club, Baltimore club, and house music. And it seems he doesn't care about listeners' first impressions. “It's all good if you don't get it yet,” Drake says during a clip, apparently in response to the mixed reactions. In the background, his song “Calling My Name” plays at what looks to be his album release party. Jesus is calling my name by Jane Charlesworth This is a lovely song that draws us deeper into the precious and reassuring reality that Jesus not only calls us by name, but really does know everything about us. From the moment He began to knit us together in the womb, His call has shaped each of our lives in a unique way. It operates both directly and indirectly, and intersects perfectly with His purposes for others too, so that He might bring about the special thing He has had in mind for us to do from before the world began. More deepy-divey into the making of the Jack Butler guitar duel and the crafting of the specific guitar itself! Also a review of the recent Charvel Guitars documentary, some background on Joe Satriani's early years in San Fancisco, and more hyperactive shred chat with Dan and Brian. OH, and a major detour into everything Motley Crue was up to during 1991, for reasons that will be made abundantly clear as we examine Steve Vai's shifting mindset during that era. Song: God Told NicodemusSong by: The Golden Gate QuartetPodcast vocals (intro): Gail NoblesHi! I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to The Gospel Greats. Today's topic: The Golden Gate Quartet. The Golden Gate Quartet (a.k.a. The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet) is a vocal gospel group. It was formed in 1934 and, with changes in membership, remains active. The group was founded as the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers in 1934, by four students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. According to the group's website, the original members were Willie Johnson (baritone 1980), William Langford (tenor; d. 1970), Henry Owens (second tenor 1970) and Orlandus Wilson (bass; 1917–1998); other sources state that Langford and Wilson replaced earlier members Robert "Peg" Ford and A.C. "Eddie" Griffin in 1935.From 1935, the group sang in churches and on local radio, gaining a regular spot on radio station WIS in Columbia, South Carolina in 1936.[ They began as a traditional jubilee quartet, combining the clever arrangements associated with barbershop quartets with rhythms borrowed from the blues and jazz like scat singing. They developed a broad repertoire of styles – from Owens' mournful, understated approach in songs such as "Anyhow" or "Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name", to the group's highly syncopated arrangements in "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego". Like The Mills Brothers in popular music, they would often include vocal special effects in their songs, imitating train sounds in songs such as "Golden Gate Gospel Train". Langford often sang lead, using his ability to range from baritone to falsetto, while Johnson narrated. Wilson's bass served as the anchor for the group and Owens harmonized with Langford and Johnson. In 1940 the group signed a new contract with Columbia Record's Okeh label and shortened their name to Golden Gate Quartet. The quartet lost their pre-eminent position in gospel music after the war, when they faced competition from the newer hard gospel quartets. The Golden Gates revived their career in 1955, however, when they toured Europe for the first time where they became widely popular. The group made their first tour of Africa in 1962, and during the early 1960s gradually expanded their accompanying band to Incorporate guitar, piano, bass, and drums. The Golden Gates sang a lot of songs. One of the songs that I like to hear the group sing is God Told Nicodemus.

Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Love & Basketball tells the story of two talented athletes who weave in and out of each other’s lives as they pursue big dreams. Monica Wright (played by Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy McCall (played by Omar Epps) are sometimes friends, enemies, lovers, and competitors. Writer Liara Tamani first saw the movie in 2000 when she was a reluctant student at Harvard Law School. *DISCLAIMER: Calling all Haikyu fans! Please hmu because I need more friends to obsess over this series with!* Oh, and in this week's episode we talk about three new guy groups who are capable of showing a more sensitive side with their music, redefining what it means to be masculine and a "man." Perhaps there's more than meets the eye... or ear in this case, but join me as we uncover the underlying emotions and meanings behind some popular kpop songs. The main takeaway of today: lyrics can come off as seductive, sultry, and sexy from a surface level, but intense physical attraction does not always equal strong, healthy relationships and rather, is often used as a facade to hide the vulnerability we actually experience within.

Liara Tamani recently wrote at Time.com: "Growing up, I was a good girl. I never got in trouble. I did what I was told. ... I’d become a master at taming, hiding and cutting out the parts of myself that weren’t compatible with the person other people wanted me to be: the rebellious, curious and sexy parts; the questioning and fearless parts. The free parts." Liara and I dig into good girl syndrome in life and in publishing, what growing up with the threat of hell hanging over you in childhood is like, and are perhaps answered by God during the interview. Of course, we also talk about books and writing: how Liara's beautiful debut, Calling My Name, came to be, and what she loves about her brand new release, All the Things We Never Knew, as well as the gorgeous covers of both of these books. In this Facebook Live, I share that I've been experiencing a whole lot of emotions as I watched George Floyd's life come to an end, and as I watch people protest their rights. I’ve felt a lot as I watched businesses get harmed and people's property damaged. In my sadness and pain, I noticed myself wanting to turn to carbs for comfort and to silence my pain. Between COVID or the death of George Floyd or the pain of what we are all collectively going through – it can take its toll. I get we all have different opinions and feelings about all of this and I also know that eating through all of this will not help. Today I would like to get real and share my feelings and how I intend to go from wanting to overeat and emotionally eat, to a helpful plan! Please spread the word! If you liked today's episode, please pass it along, and don't forget to subscribe. The album came about as a collection of feelings and memories I had of the year to this point (2019). Having lost my Step-Father, Father and Uncle within months of each other my mood was rightly reflective, sometimes sombre. The music captures these and how these events were also changing my own outlook and relationship with others. Release Date: 19th December 2019 More info: The album will be available to buy and stream in all the usual places (links TBC) Socials Youtube Soundcloud Instagram Facebook Twitter Track Listing I Will Miss You – The title says it all. Been A Long Time Without You – Even though I have relatively recently only lost these people, it feels like it has been so long since I have seen them. I wrote the lyrics by the beach, which is referenced in the track and time stamps the track to that exact period in time. Deep Sweet Dreams – Shortly after losing my Step-Father and Father I had dreams about them. The dreams were vivid and highly realistic and I woke up questioning reality. I had to talk myself through the parallel feelings I was getting. Tough Love – It's up to you. The more you love, the more you have to lose, but it's worth taking the risk for the pain. You can't have one without the other. God Knows – Whether God exists or not is not the question. Changes I saw in some people caught me off guard and left me stunned. I was lied to, deceived and made to question relationships and reality. The truth exists out there in it's purest form. People distort that reality to suit their circumstances. The notion of God really is a metaphor for a single truth existing. Heaven Wins – There is only one place that wins out of life and that is heaven. Let Me Hold You (‘Til The Pain Goes) – The sense of feeling useless when you watch people you love disappear in front of you. There is nothing you can do about that other than hold them and hope. Off My Mind – Grief can be so consuming (always on your mind) that you don't recognise you are suffering and you can't see through it. I called it ‘The Fog'. The only time I could think clearly was by making music. Unanswered – Questioning yourself can make you fall deeper into a darker place unless you find answers or learn to let those unanswered questions go. Another Day – This track has 2 meanings; one day everyone will have their last day, but others who remain will always be looking for one extra day. It also considers that if there is another world that exists then we all might meet again. Thought Of You – How beautiful life can be whilst you keep the images of goodness and light in your heart. Remember the good times. Those will serve you through life and death. Eyes Are Open Wide – The song is about understanding terminology used by doctors, where you have to read between the lines. The lack of information drives you to speculate. You must remain positive but you can't help feeling all is not well. The ‘Calling My Name' line refers to my Uncle becoming confused and disorientated in his final few days trying to pull medical equipment out of himself and calling out my father's name. On My Way – I received a call at 05:45 on Sunday the 17th of March calling me to the hospital. The music represents the thoughts that were running through my mind and the levels of anxiety, not knowing what to expect when I arrived. Not Going Under – I wrote this as soon as I got the news about my Uncle. While it sounds a bit dark it is strangely positive. When writing these lyrics, I was focussed on not allowing myself to allow these constant stressful events to bring me down. However, I might have already been in over my head. Please Just Walk Away – In response to some things that were said to me, the track became my outlet instantly.

With episode 20 looming large I decided to talk longer about some of our regular segments today and to review ten things that new homesteaders should consider as they start working on a their piece of land. We have a new development! Samantha the Savings Ninja has agreed to give us a monthly savings segment. I asked her a question about couponing because I am just now relearning how to use them in the modern age of rewards cards, cell phones and rapidly intensifying technology. Do you have a question for Samantha? Send me an email with the subject line: LFTN Savings Ninja and I'll see about getting your question on the next show. Things to ask a consultant before bringing them to your property: Who have they worked with before and what do those folks say about them? How forthcoming with their experience are they? Wayne State University Choral Union performs “Hush, Hush, Someone’s Calling My Name” under the director of conductor Dr. Gerald Custer. Recorded for Metabolic Studio at United Sound Systems recording studio in Detroit on May 19, 2015. Detroit, 2015: Citizens who are residential water customers became delinquent bill payers due to years of unmanageable water rate hikes. These locals are getting shut-off notices and their water cut-off. This threatens to displace 25,000 people, many of who are committed Detroiters. Music is a powerful force in Detroit. For many generations, choirs were the plat- form where voices came together. Today, this is still the case. The Metabolic Studio, based in Los Angeles, has been present in Detroit since 2014. During this time, we came to bare wit- ness to the community articulate their struggle to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drink- ing water and sanitation as well as the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing. Being there, we understood the power of a collective human voice as a devotional practice. We invited choirs from Detroit to come together at the iconic United Sound Systems—the oldest recording studio in the country—to cut an album about water. The choir’s songs were broadcasted live, via the Internet, into empty industrial silos on the edge of the Owens Dry Lake Bed in California. This record contains two of these hymns. From the shores of the Great Lakes to the shores of the dry lakes of the inter-mountain West there is a shared experience—both are threatened by the removal of water.

God calls us to serve, even in our unworthiness.
Here we are at the penultimate podcast of the year, and the one immediately preceding Christmas. I really don't like 99% of Christmas music so there's pretty close to none of it at all on here, although I have made a couple of exceptions as a lazy sort of nod to the season. Let's face it, if the druids can be arsed dancing about like idiots around Stonehenge and people can fall out over half-defrosted turkeys then I can probably make the effort to shove a couple of token musical nods onto a single podcast, can't I. I actually take a lot of this podcast from my recently-published albums of the year list, and from my as-yet-unpublished Festive Fifty, so it's a bit of a yearly roundup as well. And in fact, seeing as Christmas is a Sunday, I won't actually be posting until Boxing Day now, so this will be the last post before Christmas so umm, in the off-chance I don't bump into you on Facebook, Twitter or down the pub, I better wish you Happy Christmas now, hadn't I. 01.
