A week ago I ran the Ocean State Marathon and experienced something that I had only read about - the Central Governor theory. It was a wild experience and something I'll never forget. After cruising through the first 21 hilly miles, miles 22-24 were really tough. It took a great effort to keep running and not walk. Then, at mile 25, I experienced something entirely new to me. I'm well aware of the Central Governor model of performance but I had never put myself in the position test it out. At mile 25 my central governor let go and I felt like a new man. I finished the race with the fastest 10 minute segment I had put together all day All of that came after I was struggling to run at 11:00 pace. What and how did this happen?! I know experienced marathoners and ultra runners have gone through this but it was so new and just so amazing. In today's episode I talk all about this experience so that you may benefit from this in the future. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Get ready for an exciting, fun, and informative show with Dr. Mark Cucuzzella! Dr. Marks returns to the podcast for an educational conversation about his incredible work practicing family medicine, how he has overhauled the dietary practices in the hospital he works at, and much more. An accomplished marathon runner, Dr. Mark owns a unique and innovative running store to promote and share his enthusiasm for the barefoot movement and minimalist footwear.  This show blends important medical recommendations with helpful information like how to assess and minimize heart disease risk factors, and you'll learn interesting facts, like why the triglyceride to HDL ratio on your blood test is the important marker for heart disease risk factors, as well as useful info about EKG stress tests and coronary calcium score tests, and how to generally live a healthy, balanced lifestyle! TIMESTAMPS: This podcast will be filled with recommendations and information about how to assess and minimize your heart disease risk factors. [01:27] It's good to keep a competitive edge. Running is good mental therapy. [05:40] Mark talks about his medical history during his running experiences. [07:00] What happens when we hit “the wall?” The Central Governor will not let you die. [14:05] The key is to figure out how to turn it on and off. [18:30] It is important to get more than an EKG to predict heart health. You need the coronary calcium score. [21:12] A good measurement for your body is two times your waist should be less than your height. [29:49] It is still taking the medical community too long to catch up with this information. [33:21] If a person is fit and eats healthy, how does a high calcium score come in? [42:25] Your competitive intensity and your drive can all serve to harm you if it gets out of hand.  [49:36] Pre-diabetes can be making too little insulin sometimes. [51:55] All people need to look at their individual body to see what diet is best.  Is there a strategic inclusion of carbs recommended? [56:48] The barefoot minimalist shoe lifestyle is a big part of Dr. Mark's life right now. [01:02:04] NOTES: Where did the term “Type A” originate? Coined in the late 1950s, the term "Type A" originated when cardiologist Meyer Friedman observed a relationship between incidences of heart disease and personality type -- namely, that those most likely to suffer a cardiac event also tended to have, in his estimation, more driven, impatient, high-stress personalities. Emily: All right. You want to walk over with me, you can. This is a fun, creepy corner that people are very afraid of. So we're standing in the boiler, the old boiler room of MoMA PS1 right now in front of the large boiler that was set down here in 1902. That was then gold leafed by Saul Melman back in 2010 as part of our greater New York show. Bobby: And you have this massive furnace... Emily: It's the original boiler of the room. And then it was like abandoned and not used anymore. Bobby: Oh, so this is a Relic. It's very old. It's still very beautiful. Emily: It's fun. Because it's one of the only pieces you could also like totally interact with. So like you're allowed to open all the doors. I always touch the parts that are just old and grimy and not covered in gold leaf, just because gross. Bobby: And if you keep on looking at it, you obviously see that it's about halfway covered in gold leafing. And this is the work of Saul Melman. You can see gold a lot in Catholic artwork around deities and it's always associated with life. So with this piece, he wanted to bring the boiler back to life. So he used gold leafing to cover the surface and he also worked as a surgeon in the emergency room. So they think that "Central Governor" got his name because of that relation. "Central Governor" means the heart. Emily: He named the peace "Central Governor" after this kind of idea that the boiler was the heart of the building. Bobby: So, well by reinvigorating the heart you can kind of bring back to life, this museum. And that's what I think he was trying to do in some way. Emily: The gross fun details of this piece is that he didn't use any sort of like traditional glue or water based kind of like adhesive. Bobby: All the gold leaving was applied with his bodily fluids. That includes sweat, blood and urine. Emily: He used blood, sweat and tears, like literally. Bobby: I would say that this is definitely one of the visitor favorites. Emily: If you walk over to the piece and you look at the center where you see some lights, you'll notice these test tubes filled with a white liquid. Bobby: There's two vials. I don't don't know what they were used for, but Saul Melman has repurposed them and inserted his semen in it. Emily: People have gasped. People just will like give you blank stares. People just will kind of explode in laughter. Bobby: Yes that sounds weird, but there's this association with life. Emily: I think it kind of kicks them off into a good point of understanding how many strange things are here. Bobby: So, many people might think it's funny, but to me it kind of makes sense. It's outlandish, but once I look at the artwork as a whole, I feel like I understand it and appreciate it.

Lemmon, but yesterday they battled in person to very end.  Sam Long and Lionel Sanders ran shoulder to shoulder for last three miles of IRONMAN 70.3 St. George, the North American 70.3 Championship. If it had been a 70.1, Sam may have won, but with an obvious final grimace, Sanders had one last kick and pulled away in the final turns and edged Long by five seconds. Both men collapsed at the finish line where the emotion and pain of the effort was clear when they stood and embraced like two prize fighters with nothing else to give. The made for the movies ending culminated a day that saw Long and Sanders make up time on the bike putting them in position to chase down the leaders on the run that included Boulder’s Rudy Von Berg who finished fourth. For Sam Long this was a breakthrough race. He knew that if he found himself in the exact position he did, that all his hard work had paid off. He knew Sanders was probably the one to beat and his respect (maybe admiration) for Sanders was obvious at the finish line. During the broadcast, analyst and pro triathlete Dede Griesbauer (who did an amazing job) thought Long’s move near the top of the last hill about 3 miles out may have been too soon. He caught the pack on the hill and then slipped back near the top. Was his last match burnt? Nope, and he said when asked about it, “my plan all along was to push the final 3 miles. He is the author of “Run Transformation,” The World’s Best Run Training Course.  He also wrote Run Workouts for Runners and Triathletes. The Forward in that book is by Tim Noakes who established the Central Governor theory and leading Physiologists. One of Bobby's athletes, Barb Lindquist, 2004 Olympic Triathlete writes of Bobby McGee - "I worked with Bobby in my lead up to the Athens Olympics.  His approach took my running to the next level, helping me become the World #1 ranked triathlete for 2 years. His blend of science & intuition definitely brings out the best runner you could possibly be.” Sue Reynolds started a journey that started with a walk to a neighbors house and back.  Step by step, goal by goal, she discovered running and then triathlon and completely transformed her body and life.  At the age of 67 she has completed 5 seasons of triathlon and has been to 4 world championships.  We spoke to her about her book "The Athlete Inside" Let's get into the in person interview at Bobby's office in Boulder, CO. This episode is just me, Pete, talking about my mindset that helped me win the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in 2012. Full results from that race here We start where it ended, with my finish line interview with the voice of Ironman, and good friend, Mike Reilly. I had a unique mindset, using the word LOVE, as a bit of a mantra to keep me free of doubts and fear, and therefore making me stronger and calmer. I go into detail of how this had a positive effect on my Nervous System, the positive recruitment of muscles, hormones, and overall performance for me under the pressures of a world championship race. I had been mentored by Allan Pitman for the years leading up to this event, and he’d introduced me and sat in on my session with kinesiologist Ian Maitland. We worked through my fears and doubts and was given the word LOVE as a positive mindset change. It was to help deal with trolls, pressure, competitors, pain, heat etc.  I visualised all the time in training. I was training my mind as much as my body in every session. I created a playlist around the theme of LOVE. Here it is.... I didn't listen to all these songs equally, and got sick of a few of them and had favourites I would replay a lot!       Spotify has a cool search option using the barcode on the playlist picture. Open Spotify app on your phone, go to "search", and see there's a picture of a camera at the top, hit that, and then take a photo of the barcode here to instantly be connected :)           https://open.spotify.com/user/petejjacobs/playlist/4dRxmflvRtajDOdx6NLj7X?si=g-OJz6BPRiCiApZT0mEeFg I made changes in my approach from runner up in 2011 to winning in 2012. A piece of audio from a friend cheering for me on course captures the sentiment I had on race day  perfectly. I’d let my supporters know to remind me I was out there because I LOVED it. Recap of the race, how I was able to remain calm and make the correct decisions thanks to having visualised the race in training so often, and my relatively calm nervous system aiding in my mental clarity. Phil Maffetone pointing out primary vs secondary symptoms. Physical reactions, abilities and emotions come from the nervous system, controlled partly by the Central Governor (basically the brain, mostly..sort of) and how it reacts to what you are letting it know and perceive. Tim Noakes is an authority on the Central Governor Theory, a short description of this theory from wikipedia.  The central governor is a proposed process in the brain that regulates exercise in regard to a neurally calculated safe exertion by the body. In particular, physical activity is controlled so that its intensity cannot threaten the body’s homeostasis by causing anoxic damage to the heart muscle. The central governor limits exercise by reducing the neural recruitment of muscle fibers. This reduced recruitment causes the sensation of fatigue. The existence of a central governor was suggested to explain fatigue after prolonged strenuous exercise in long-distance running and other endurance sports, but its ideas could also apply to other causes of exertion-induced fatigue. and more information below from from https://runnersconnect.net/central-governor-theory/  The central governor theory posits that racing is a balance between: (1) physical preparation and biological systems;  (2) emotional components, such as motivation and pain tolerance; (3) and self-preservation. The exact combination of these factors is what leads to how hard you’re able to push during a race.   A rough description of how the energy systems work, and how they are controlled internally and externally.   Sympathetic Nervous System response to running from the lion. This example from this amazing TED talk below. An excellent TED talk that explains a lot about how to be healthy, and perform better. It is a must watch to gain a greater idea of what HEALTH me...

Cara asks: I read the book Digestive Wellness and the author states that receding gum lines in the mouth are due to bone loss. I eat paleo (no dairy) but I do eat plenty of vegetables and strength train. Is that enough to prevent bone loss? My gums are receding and seem to be getting worse. I had been taking AdvaCal Ultra 1000 as a supplement. Should I not supplement with any calcium or do something different? Gerry asks: I know you've talked about serum testosterone in the blood. Is there a direct relationship between serum levels and free testosterone levels? If so, how strong in the correlation? My serum testosterone levels are at 84 Julie asks: Hey Ben. I had some back surgery on L4/L5 and L5/S1 a few months ago. My doctor cleared me to start exercising but recommended avoiding all exercises that involve a crunching or pike motion. Can you outline effective and safe abdominal and lower back exercises that are isometric in nature? Right now all I can think of is the plank. Are upright rotational movements okay for spinal injuries (such as the woodchopper exercises)? Liz has a call in question: I am a 33 year old active female. I run an average of 40 miles per week, and I just qualified for Boston with no small thanks due to your Marathon Dominator package (awesome, by the way!). I am pretty lean, at about 5'6" and 117lbs. I also lift weights 5 days per week. I stopped getting my period about a year and a half ago, and although irregular menstration runs in my family, and it did coincide with a significant rise in my general fitness level, my doctor recently prescribed a ten day dose of Progesterone to induce a period. I was wondering if you could offer any nutritional guidelines for helping to raise my hormone levels naturally. In my response to Liz, I recommend EnerEssence I. Kris asks: Personally Indoor bike session are painful I would much rather be outside. My question to you is how long is a fair amount of time to spend on the bike trainer, and what kind of drills, intervals etc can I do on the trainer? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
